View Full Version : Strange Clock Problem at Stars/Wild Game

So I'm watching the Stars/Wild game - 2nd period. Modano gets a mid-ice check that is kinda awkward (he kinda spun around before the hit and took a clean hit square in the back). Of course, the crowd did not like that one bit. He was on the ice wincing for a long time and was assisted off the ice by teammates.
Flash forward a few minutes (about 7 left in the period) and Hatcher gets called for roughing (shoved the guy in the face with his gloves) and he (and the fans) go ballistic. He basically refused to get in the box until Fraser handed out another 2 mins for unsportsmanlike conduct. He goes in the box, still pitching a fit, whacking his stick on the glass, etc.
Now here's the strange part. Hatcher has a 4 minute penalty and the clock is reading 60-something seconds. Not a minute something, 60-something. Then it doesn't start when they drop the puck. Then it does. Then it gets stuck on 54 seconds. Now remember, there was 6 or 7 minutes on the clock before the Hatcher penalty. With the Wild on a PP and the clock stuck, the crowd starts freaking out after more than a minute elapsed. Apparently the crowd, nor the announcers had a clue that there was more than a minute left before the whole thing started. The announcers were asking each other "do you remember what the time was when the called the penalty?" response "uh, no". The crowd finally gets so pissed that they start throwing crap on the ice. Finally they stop play and take many minutes to sort it all out. Meanwhile, Manny Fernandez is crouched INSIDE the goal, presumably to protect himself from the flying objects. I hope Yahoo posts a picture of it - it was that funny looking.
So they fix the clock, put about 4 minutes back on it and they continue.

What do you expect? These people certainly aren't rocket surgeons. (Yeah, I meant it like that)

I've had my own personal nightmares running the clock at hockey games. Maybe not quite this bad, but bad enough that i handed the chore over midway through one particular game, and never took that position again.
A rocket surgeon i am not.

I always have sympathy for the folks that deal with that. I remember running the timing system for a college swim meet and thinking "they'd be really pissed if we screwed up".
And darn, I always wanted to know a "rocket surgeon". ;)

I am a rocket surgeon just not in the subject of hockey clocks. (You see, when I originally wrote this, it said "I am a rocket subject just not in the surgeon of hockey clocks."
My field: My gracefullness (Not)
And my side-tracked/black-out ability. (Like ^up there^)

Hehe wow. Definitely unique mishap there! There really appears to be quite a bit of things the timekeeper has to keep track of, especially when the penalties start racking up. Who can forget the early season Canes/Bolts game?? That was insane! Hedican was kept in the penalty box till well after his penalty expired, one player (I can't remember who know) was allowed out of the penalty box to skate one shift until they realized he was supposed to still be in the penalty box, etc. I'm not sure if this was more the refs fault or a timekeeper mishap but either way it was a mess! I'm glad they got it all straightened out though. Last I checked the box score, the Wild were leading. I'll have to check again now to see how that game finished!

I don't think I've EVER been to a Bolts game where they DIDN'T have that problem...(More minor than this though)

Here's a picture after the hit on Modano.

I have to say it looked like Dupuis tried to cushion the fall to the ice after the hit (both seeing it live/replay, and in this photo).

Poor Modano. But at least Dupuis handled his hit with a little more class than Roenick.
