Here's the text:
RALEIGH, N.C. (Aug. 13, 2003) – Jim Rutherford, President/General Manager of the Carolina Hurricanes, announced today that the team has signed left wing Erik Cole to a one-year contract. As per club policy, terms of the deal were not announced.
In 53 games during the 2002-03 campaign, Cole (6’ 2”, 200 lbs.) had 14 goals and 13 assists (27 points) and accumulated 72 penalty minutes. Despite missing the season’s final 29 games after suffering a broken left leg on Jan. 30 at Tampa Bay, Cole finished sixth on the team in scoring.
“Erik is working hard and is 100 percent healthy,” said Rutherford. “He is one of our key forwards who plays an important leadership role. He will make a difference in the success of this team.”
After cracking the Hurricanes lineup prior to the 2001-02 season, Cole, 24, has notched 30 goals and earned 37 assists in 134 regular-season NHL games. During the 2002 playoffs, the Oswego, N.Y., native scored six goals and earned three assists (9 points) while playing in all 23 of Carolina’s postseason games. Cole was selected to play in the 2003 NHL YoungStars Game during All-Star weekend, but missed the exhibition following his injury.
The Hurricanes drafted Cole in the third round, 71st overall, in 1998. After completing his collegiate career at Clarkson University, Cole signed with the Hurricanes on March 26, 2000, and, played 78 games with Cincinnati of the International Hockey League before joining Carolina in 2001-02. "
Looks like we only have Big Joe to be signed now!

Since I don't feel like saying I told you so... I'll just do this:
8/4:
as to 'the holdup'... I just have a feeling that JR is taking his time, because he can. there hasn't been a real rush to get these guys signed, because there's time. probably the only ones nervous about it... are the fans. heh
8/7:
any speculation about why Erik is taking so long???
yes. because there's no rush. :p
we've been through this... there is Plenty of time to sign these guys, so there's really no need to rush through getting a deal done. I absolutely guarantee you that JR is still talking with Markov's agent. That and watching videos of camp (or camp itself) is most likely where all of his efforts have been.
I'll say it again... I'm not worried. ;)
:p :p hehe
but yes, very good news indeed.

Sweet. Now, one more and we are set. Of course I'm trying not to worry about everyone having 1 year deals but that is OK I guess. It will give them incentive to kick butt this year so they can garner more lucrative contracts next year.

can't find that one pic. the one that just epitomizes what Cole is all about (for me). when he scored against the Habs 2 seasons ago, and was skating up to the top of the circle, couple of canes around smiling. Cole was grinning this "come on and get some" grin, with both arms raised... Right in the face of a Hab. F'n hilarious. I won't forget that picture as long as I live. Just perfect.

Yep, he is like a kid in a candy store when he scores in the playoffs, too. I LOVED it when he scored on Theodore in Montreal, and then jumped into the plexiglass, and just shoved it in the face of the Habs. It was so great to see how excited he was.

I very much enjoy Cole's post goal expressions. Sometimes he just shrugs his shoulders as he did in the photo Shell posted (I think that's from the hat trick in Montreal? If not, he looked just like that after the 3rd goal.) and sometimes he looks stunned. I love the two arms up!

First we sign Markov, then we re-sign Colesy. Pretty good summer in Canes land I'd say.
But did we re-sign STORMY yet?? I heard his contract was up after last season. ;)

NHLPA.com lists Cole's new salary at $495k. If you listened to the comments to the press by JR, he seemed to imply that it's "team policy" to have players play under the standard qualifying offer coming out of the "entry level" contract. With incentives, JR said he can make "quite a bit more money" if he has a good year.

I will admit I am completely biased on this topic because Erik is one of my favorite players. That being said, does it seem fair that Jaro gets $600K and Erik gets $495K? I certainly hope that he got a better deal when you add the incentives to the mix. I think Erik brings much more consistency (and from Chuck K's past comments) leadership to the team than Jaro. Maybe I am blinded by fandom.

Almost half a million and bonuses isn't fair? I admit that's not a lot of money by NHL standards, but let me tell you, I'd switch places with him for a lot less in NO TIME! Hey, I like Colesy too, and maybe he is one of the few who actually aren't in it just for the money. I think it's a refreshing change. KUDOS to #26.

I didn't mean to say that the total compensation wasn't fair. Sure, half a mil is more than I'll ever see. What I meant is when you look down a roster and see someone making 20% more than you for equivalent work it is frustrating. I used to be employed by a local hospital corporation that did the same thing to us. Out of five people in the office three made a significant amount more than the other two. Now all five people worked equal hours, had equal responsibilities and generated equal amount of work/money. It led to very awkard moments at times.
It is a wonderful thing if these things don't bother him at all. :)

Didn't Jaro make close to $1 million last year so he took a pay cut. It's all about the qualifying offer and the player's age and whether or not you have arbitration rights. I believe with a one year deal, Erik will have arbitration rights next year so that works in his best interest. I'm glad Cole is back on board and I think the plan is to keep him a Cane for a long time. I hope that's what he plans as well.

and now, back on topic, from today's Oswego's daily news:
August 14, 2003
Cole Signs New Deal With Carolina Hurricanes
Staff report
8/14/2003
Oswego's Erik Cole Wednesday reaped the rewards of an excellent sophomore year.
The Carolina Hurricanes signed Cole to a one-year contract this week. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.
The former Oswego High School hockey star rose rapidly to the National Hockey League, spending only two years in the minors before making the Hurricanes' roster in 2001.
He was among the league's leaders among rookies in scoring, and led the league in hits. "He's really along the lines of a power forward," said Hurricanes President and General Manager Jim Rutherford. "He can play a physical forward, and he can also put some points up."
"I'm just happy to have it over with," Cole said at a news conference. "Put it behind me and look forward to the season."
Cole returned to Carolina's training facilities early, to jumpstart a season that ended early last year. Cole broke his leg January 30 in a game against Tampa Bay and sat out the rest of the season.
He says he has recovered from the injury. "I made all my weight back. I feel strong this year," he said, noting that he feels as strong as he did during his first NHL training camp.
The Hurricanes' season opens October 9.

Not to get OT again, but if you'd like to hear more words of wisdom from HJS........... http://www.ebaumsworld.com/homer.html
Now, back to the topic at hand, #26 is going to be a great player sooner than later. If he can keep up his work ethic and not let his head get too big (yes BS, I am referring to you), he will be worth every penny his "under"paid. I think that if every player's contract was set up in a way that they got a guaranteed base salary of aroung 1 million and then given incentive clauses for performance, I think we'd have a much better, more competitive game and be rid of the kind of players who seem to make their way into a Rangers uniform.

You're right Aaryn...I love the Idea of actually earning what you make. All to often the guys with big contracts have equally bigger heads and play only for themselves. With incentive based contracts the guys are more focused and rewarded for doing good.
And Colesy could be the captain of this team some day...I hope he stays around a looong time.

I'm with you. I did believe he was set with the Canes, but I didn't want any wiggle room.
We're not too happy up here in NY to have him signed on the dotted line. Our local paper had nearly a full page about the contract signing along with pictures and a list of dates for games within a 5 hour drive. (Not that BridgeStreetRun and I needed the list, we've already analyzed the schedule). ;)
