I've been reminded that it's a new month.

Today's games are all matinees so as to wrap up in ample time for the spectacle and hype that is the Super Bowl.

Go Steelers!

oops wrong thread.... :D

Right there with ya LTD- in our house, it's "Go Stillers!" ;)

Anyone else out there?

I know most everyone is probably pretty much watching pregame football shows, our pregame is hockey- so we're watching the Habs v Bruins; I recall puck_it posted pics of the jerseys they'd wear for the anniversary season and pee-ewww, they are wearing some 'interesting' jerseys. They look like straight up Jailbirds..... these things are hideous! Apparently the are true throw backs to 1912, and they totally look the part from the era, I recall seeing some baseball uniforms from that time that looked similar. These are striped red, white and blue, with the laced up neck line, and a maple leaf crest (?) with "CAC" in the leaf. It's a look for sure- gosh help them, I wonder if anyone will buy those things, although I saw a kid about 10 years old wearing one behind the Habs bench.

No wonder Boston is beating them....they're demoralized by those uniforms!

What I want to know is who the idiot is that designed that and why in the hell did the league accept that. Boy the Rangers sure know howto do it up; Tonight they retired Adam Graves' #9. and as per usual, it's a spectacle in a good way. Graves did real well until they raised the number to the rafters and he was overcome. Hand on face, and his poor wife trying to comfort him. I think his little boy became emotional and was alternately hugging him and comforting his dad. The 3 captains took the banner to the hook and they raised it. They even had James Gandolfini and Little Steven from the Sopranos there to honor him. Plus a bunch of kids he's helped from the various charity work and lots of NYPD and NYFD folks there to cheer him on. VERY well done.

Nice touch for Graves after he put the jersey on and they did group photo with the previous retired players, and the Cup, Graves put his hand over his heart and waved to the fans and they went bananas.

it 's probably corny to enjoy these things, but when they're well done, and even if the player wasn't 'my guy' it's so neat to see.

Oh and whoever else is watching, I know you saw Messier getting emotional too. I mean what's a retirement (not even his own cause that's a whole other ball of wax, lol) ceremony with out Messier trying to keep it together and doing a crappy job of it?

Wade's brother is a Duck.

Devils Trade Brookbank to Ducks.

The New Jersey Devils last night dealt defenseman Sheldon Brookbank to the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for center David MacIntyre.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: My thanks to everyone who sent this in. Analysis later today on my blog but in short this move was done to free up roster space whilst adding another prospect to the Devils system, according to GM Lou Lamoriello.

A stat I've been tracking all season (thanks to SHC's comment last spring about "I'll take consistency" in regard to the Stillman/Samsonov issue).

Cory Stillman
34 games, 11 goals, 17 assists (28 points)

Sergei Samsonov
51 games, 9 goals, 16 assists (25 points)

Yeah, I know Cory was much more expensive (by a mil/per year), but I can't help but wonder if he'd have taken a slight discount seeing as he had (has?) a house here, etc.

Cory had the game tying goal last night in TO and it seems like he's been clutch for the cats a few times. I just wish I saw some real chemistry between Samsonov and Staal (or someone) to make me stop looking at these stat comparisons.

Sergei is talented out the wazoo, but w/o production (and oh btw he's playing with one of the best centers in the NHL) and consistency....so what?

I like Samsonov.....but I still think Stillman would have been a better signing.

SoCalcaniac
02-04-2009, 11:28 AM
E, I completely agree on your entire assessment. Cory had/has value that is not easily measured first of all, but when it is measured (i.e. big time goals) it just puts him over the top. I also believe if we had put together some kind of offer that made sense, he would have likely taken it. He mentioned how much his family loved it here a bunch of times, and they seemed well rooted here, so I have to believe that if the numbers were decent, he would have taken them. Plus his relationship with Eric, (not unlike the chemistry that The Eric(k)s had) was something that I think is overlooked. Stillman took Staal under his wing in one way, and in the other way, he stood back and let him be the star player that he is. It was this interesting tutor like situation, and Stillman was comfortable in doing it. Now he's the same thing with Booth and Horton.

Samsonov, I like A LOT. I really thought he'd have chemistry with #12, but it's sporadic and fleeting; and he tends to internalize what isn't working for him when he's not getting the breaks, and you can see the grippinig going on.

I'm not detail oriented enough like E to break it down like ^ , but I've had the looking around the room tendencies because it's like this: Eric, we all know is a hell of a player. he can do things, and he can be a one man wrecking crew. Personally, there has been a stretch of games recently, (like last night 1st period) where he's tried to go through 3-4 guys to go in and score. We all know that ain't happenin' in this league. So the prideful guy that he is, he's trying to go out and do it all himself. That just was never the case when he had two players to rely on in Cole/Stillman. I think there is more chemistry with #15 and #12, I just don't know that #14 is the 'fit' for Staal. I do know that Stillman was/is.

I too ,would not pay attention to anything related to Stillman either, but it's all glaring when the chemisty is lacking.

How bout that DAGGER in the Leafs/Panthers game, with McCabe sticking it to them with the OT winner. Talk about Karma....

So, I hear about the about the Pens 3 goal deficit comeback in the 3rd period, capping it all with an OT win. I actually saw this on the MSNBC Sports hightlights this morning!

Take a look a this box score to feel the Bolts' pain

1st Period
Tampa Bay 15:25, Ryan Malone 16 (Mark Recchi, Paul Ranger)
2nd Period
Tampa Bay 5:00, Martin St. Louis 19 (Vincent Lecavalier, Steve Eminger)
Tampa Bay 16:52, Vincent Lecavalier 24 (Vaclav Prospal, Martin St. Louis)
3rd Period
Pittsburgh 2:25, Evgeni Malkin 23 (Pascal Dupuis)
Pittsburgh 14:06, Mark Eaton 2 (Petr Sykora)
Pittsburgh 16:31, Petr Sykora 20 (power play) (Evgeni Malkin, Sidney Crosby)
OT Period
Pittsburgh 4:44, Evgeni Malkin 24 (Jordan Staal, Brooks Orpik)

And the poor goalie in Tampa? The dude the JUST signed a few days ago from their AHL team since Smith is hurt or something. I guess Kari Ramo couldn't do back to backs?

Poor guy.

Times like these you realize....things could be worse.

Oh wait. Let's hear from the Veteran Gary Roberts about his roughing penalty he took that led to the tying goal in the 3rd.

Roberts played his first game after missing 28 straight and 32 of 33 with a torn elbow tendon. But he lost his cool and punched Pittsburgh agitator Matt Cooke after they jostled and jawed.

"You've got to realize who it is but so should the referee realize who it is," Roberts said. "He's obviously famous for diving, and he never really played with any honor. … He's out there with a visor, chirping it up without any intention of dropping the gloves. I've got no respect for a guy like that."

SoCalcaniac
02-05-2009, 12:05 PM
E, it was even better to WATCH. Especially that sequence that lead to the goal by Malkin (it was all JStaal who fed an amazing pass from an in flight Malkin)

I saw the post game scrum on FSN PIT and they showed Roberts saying the comments ^- he looked like he was going to go over to the other room and kill Cooke. Veins bulging out of his head and all.

and since I was rooting for the Pens to lose since we don't need to have them in the mix with us, but that's the way it'll be - I was so not happy that Tampa tanked.

Malkin did another postgame interview- he is doing really well, it's shocking to see such a turn around, but I always knew he could understand english, he was just 'scared' to speak it. He's even getting the lingo down "we talked about it in the room between periods" "we must win. we need points, I think we are sick and tired of losing". It's far funnier with the heavy russian accent, but just shows how universal the whole hockey player cliched phrases are!

So the Panthers won AGAIN 3-2 over the Isles, and I shouldn't probably care since it was a Panther, but Doug Weight just hit Ville Peltonen, eerily similar to the hit on Brandon Sutter- caught him up high- but Peltonen hopped back up. Denis Potvin was crying the whole time saying "That's a penalty it was just like the hit on young Sutter in Carolina". No penalty called, but it was not a clean hit.

ST. LOUIS (AP)—St. Louis Blues (http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/teams/stl/;_ylt=As8O7n4DUhkR6VZIIQt5q4wmvLYF) goaltender Manny Legace (http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/players/1241/;_ylt=AluBGEgK2OVZb_vbjfSbfQMmvLYF) cleared waivers on Saturday and will be sent to the team’s minor league affiliate in Peoria.
The Blues had placed the 36-year-old on waivers on Friday.
An All-Star for St. Louis last season, Legace has struggled this season, going 13-9-2 with a 3.12 goals-against average and .885 save percentage. He was replaced as the Blues’ top goalie by Chris Mason (http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/players/1830/;_ylt=Aorpx1NqOLFVuk0k1YMY7pYmvLYF).
Legace is 177-92-18-18, with a 2.38 GAA and .912 save percentage in his 10-year career.
The Blues recalled goalie Chris Holt (http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/players/3757/;_ylt=Aq01gTkamxXtoBChpHFm3lImvLYF) from Peoria to be Mason’s backup.

I heard the end of Clement on XM yesterday 5:30ish and he was going on and on about what Legace "did" to the team. I never heard the supposed misdeed, but I got the impression he wanted an extension or something and when he didn't get it he dragged it into the locker room? He (Clement) used phrases like "had to get him out", "so disappointed in Manny" and stuff like that.

Anyone know the deal?

SouthernHockeyChick
02-07-2009, 06:37 PM
I didn't hear any of that but, I had heard Legace make some comments about St Louis waiving him that were something I thought he should have kept to himself. Same kind of thing I've heard him say before. Made me think that maybe I see why the Wings didn't keep him now.

SoCalcaniac

E, didn't hear Clement, but I did hear Andy Strickland, who covers the Blues and is based in St. Louis, has a big show on the radio there, and used to have a blog (not sure if it's still there) on Eck's site, he said nearly the same thing. and used the "c" word as far as the room goes- and also said the relationship with Andy Murray was real bad, which isn't shocking with Murray, as his shelf life and his history as a coach is pretty well documented.

I liked how John Davidson took the high road with all of Legace's comments. I'm sure JD would have been able to light him up through the media, but chose to refrain.

After that performance against DET the other night, he should've kept his mouth shut. He was putrid.

The Most Connected, Respected, & Hardest Working Rumor Writers in the NHL

OMFG. What a tool.

He's labeled the President of the Hockey Writers of America (K. Allen), Darren Dreger, McKenzie, LeBrun and Adam Proteau as "rumor writers" when they all are part of the mainstream MEDIA. AS IF.

Everyone on his list has some connection to a newspaper, TV or has written extensively about hockey. In fact several are bona fide AUTHORS. He can't be that stupid.

This fool still rolls around as an alias, and has yet to name a credible source for his made up stories, yet, McKenzie, Dreger, LeBrun et al, know a ton of people, are respected by many in the business, and when they put out a "report" nine times out of ten, the situation comes to light immediately after they've reported on it.

I guess this is Eckdork's way of trying to be relevant, as he no longer has a real platform for spreading his stupid as all get out rumors, and this would bring about some traffic/chatter to his site. I particularly enjoy how he says everyone is a "good hockey guy" in some way or another, so he can somehow not look so bad, while trying to essentially say all of them are like him- rumor mongers.

Vanek fractured his jaw when he got hit by a Volchenkov shot vs OTT last night- and poor Slugs fans will have to make due without him:

Fractured jaw sidelines Sabres Vanek up to four weeks

BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Buffalo Sabres are going to have to make due without top goal-scorer Thomas Vanek (http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/teams/players/?name=thomas+vanek).
The NHL team announced Sunday that the winger is expected to be out of the lineup for three to four weeks with a fractured jaw.
Vanek suffered the injury when he took a puck to the face during Saturday's game in Ottawa. He had successful surgery on Sunday.
Vanek is currently third on the NHL's goal list with 32. He also has 20 assists to lead the Sabres with 52 points.
The 25-year-old has only missed one game during his four-year NHL career. He was a healthy scratch in April 2006.

Florida looks far more poised to climb the rankings. This is not the team we've seen over the past several years. If NYR and MTL continue to tumble-- may make it that much easier for middlings like FLA, CAR and PIT all the more likely to get in.

Toronto sucks! To fall apart like that-- CHOKE!

That is twice in a week that Toronto had atleast a 2 goal lead only to blow it and allow Florida to win. Leafs are worthless. We have to take care of our business Thursday.

/rant on:

This is what is infuriating about watching teams we're chasing and doing the "hope" they lose thing. It flippin' never works. Case in points:

The Sharks are in BUF, losing right now, 4-1 to the Slugs. The inevitable swoon that was bound to come for the Sharks is now in full effect, and started when we beat them last week, and now they're in a slump. Just makes you wanna scream.

All this of course, goes back to the whole take care of your own business and then you don't have to worry about what the other teams are doing. Just so annoying.

Well, let me take all that yapping back.

It's 5-4 Sharkies. Little Joe Pavelski just scored a beauty fending off two guys and gets loose with a pretty shot. This is the Sharks team I know. My gosh, WTH?

The other Joe (Thornton) had a brutal turnover that lead to the Derek Roy goal (#3) - and all he's done to make up for it, was assist on all the goals except the last one by Pavelski. INSANE.

The SLUGS are reeling and the HSBC is quiet.

This is one of those games where you say, why the heck can't the Canes mount a comeback like that? 8 minutes to go, I'll just enjoy this game and hush.

Wow. I was actually pulling for the Slugs, given what happened in BUF last night. On XM they said that Teppo heard the odd plan sounds and then the impact/explosion. They said a 24 year old Buffalo college girl was headed back to have a reunion with her college team and was on that flight. Boomer said the interviews they had on TV showed a really shaken bunch of players and even Lindy.

Heh- your 'rooting' must have come through E. I'm sensitive to that completely horrific plane crash tragedy, but no way in life am I rooting for BUF, especially given our precarious situation in the standings and the fact that we could catch them if we screwed our heads on. Didn't listen to a peep of XM today- back to my ban of hockey media when we get clobbered.

Anywoo- Craig Rivet, the defensive scoring machine, scored his second goal of the night with .03 seconds left in regulation.

When I think that our GM and coach (and players I guess) are being delusional when talking about the plxyxffs, I need only to think about the Lightning a few games ago. They were getting ready to start this big ol' homestand and said if they swept it, they'd be back in the playoff hunt.

So, 3 games into the homestand, they've lost 2 of 3. They only have 2 teams behind them in the east, so I'm not sure how they really expected to make up much ground when basically someone ahead of them is earning points every night.

Anyway, their nail is in the coffin now. Might be interesting to see what starts happening as the cowboys in Hockey Bay try to move pieces.

And those poor Pens. Up 2-0 and then the Leafs score 6 unanswered goals. Ouch.

Schneider to the Habs.

THRASHERS TRADE DEFENCEMAN SCHNEIDER TO CANADIENS

TSN.ca Staff
2/16/2009 2:53:32 PM

The Atlanta Thrashers have traded defenceman Mathieu Schneider to his former team, the Montreal Canadiens.

In exchange, the Thrashers receive a second round draft pick in 2009 and a third round selection in 2010. In addition to Schneider, Montreal receives a conditional pick at this year's draft.

Schneider previously played for the Canadiens from the 1989-90 season until 1995, winning a Stanley Cup with the team in 1993. He was traded to the Islanders in 1995.

This season, the New York native has 4 goals and 11 assists in 44 games.

The 39 year-old was selected in the third round (44th overall) of the 1987 NHL Entry Draft. A well-traveled veteran, Schneider has had stints with the Canadiens, Islanders, Maple Leafs, Rangers, Kings, Red Wings, Ducks and Thrashers.

More details to follow.

MILLER INJURED!

Ryan Miller left the game in the 3rd against the Rags with an ankle injury. He was injured in a collision with Scotty Gomez as Miller was trying to play the puck behind the net. In the post game presser, Lindy Ruff called Gomez's actions "intentional, he definitely knew what he was doing". Ruff also said that Miller's ankle was swollen and he "can't play". So for now, it's Lalime in net for the Sabres, perhaps making the Feb 26th game a bit more interesting...

Ruff doesn't miss an opportunity to stir the pot. Even the Buffalo announcers said that Gomez is "not that type of player" and that it was unintentional.

So my husband prefers to watch hockey on Oscar night, and got fixed on the Leafs v Rangers- and gets the ol' dagger in the heart. The Creeps, were winning 2-1 and of course as the Leafs are wont to do, decide to take a penalty and with 30 seconds left, the unable-to-score Rangers..............you guessed it, Scored. Unfreakin-believeable.

I'm sure the Leafs will win in OT - cause that's how pitiful they are, they'll let a team climb back in it, and then they'll score in OT or some stupid crap, giving up a point.

EDIT: Looky here- the Rags take a penalty in OT, and Pavel Kubina scores to win it in OT. Let's plan the parade. :eyeroll

Boy, I feel like a mind reader!

Rags fired Renney- just happened :

Rangers Fire Renney
TSN.ca

The struggling New York Rangers have fired head coach Tom Renney with 21 games left in the NHL season.
The last straw came after the Rangers' 3-2 overtime loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Sunday, which handed New York its tenth loss in 12 games (2-7-3).
The Rangers are currently in a tie for fifth place in the Eastern Conference, but they sit only two points ahead of ninth-place Carolina in a tight playoff race.
Rumours had been swirling among fans and analysts that Renney's time could come to an end soon if the Rangers continued their free fall in the standings.
Renney, who turns 54 on March 1, was in his sixth season with the team.
In an interesting sidenote, all four NHL teams that opened the NHL season in Europe have now fired their head coaches this season. In addition to Renney, other coaches to get the axe are the Penguins' Michel Therrien, the Lightning's Barry Melrose and the Senators' Craig Hartsburg.
Those teams were part of the NHL's move to generate interest overseas by holding regular season games in Prague, Czech Republic and Stockholm, Sweden to kick off the 2008-09 campaign.
Renney started the 2003-04 season as assistant coach for the Rangers and was appointed as interim head coach after Glen Sather was fired during the season.
Prior to that, Renney had coached the Vancouver Canucks, where he was behind the bench from the 1996-97 season to midway through the 1997-98 season, when he was fired and replaced by Mike Keenan.
The Rangers are 31-23-7 this season.

If you are interested in a laugh, check out Puck Daddy's Sat morning blog and then Eklund's "response".

Here is Puck Daddy's blog about "Brian Burke" (http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/blog/puck_daddy/post/Follow-the-thought-process-of-Brian-Burke-on-T?urn=nhl,143103) on twitter. Which includes the tweet of

Ran into Eklund last night. He kept grilling me about trades and rumors. Finally I just paid him for the pizza and slammed the door.

Note that the entire post refers to Burke as "Brian Burke" or "Burke". I mean, the whole thing is ridiculous that I can't believe anyone believed it to be Burke or that Puck Daddy believed it to be.

Now Eklund's "response".

When Burkie called me back I wasn't sure if he knew about the imposter or the subsequent story on PuckDaddy that lent credence to it, but he had. Brian had heard that someone was writing as him and saying crap about Ferguson Jr.

This guy is THAT stupid? Did he really think Puck Daddy believed it?

http://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog.php?post_id=19573

And there it is my hockey friends. The stereotypical kind of blogging that makes many NHL teams nervous and stingy about giving access to internet hockey writers. This is the kind of story that deeply sets back the cause. To those of us who are welcomed in by all NHL teams I can tell you this much: That in the not too distant future, in some press box or media cafeteria, when the debate arises once again about bloggers in the press box, some mainstream media guy or team rep will cite this story as to why they believe that only mainstream writers should be granted credentials. And I will try, as I always will, to defend the cause, fight for more access, etc...But I will see where they are coming from.

Fight the good fight Ek!!! I wonder what "stereotypical kind of blogging" is?

I guess that Trade Deadline Thread should probably get started now. Ryan Whitney has fallen from grace, and the Pens traded him; not sure if Kunitz is 'for value' but I guess they had to do it :

The Pittsburgh Penguins have cleared up a bit of their log jam along the blue line as they have sent Ryan Whitney (http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/teams/players/?name=ryan+whitney) to the Anaheim Ducks for Chris Kunitz (http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/teams/players/?name=chris+kunitz) and Eric Tangradi (http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/teams/players/?name=eric+tangradi).
The 26-year old Whitney was a vital piece of the Penguins' Stanley Cup run last year; however foot surgery caused him to miss the first 31 games of the season.
The Boston-native is one of the better puck moving defencemen in the league and should be a big boost to the Ducks power play. He became deemed surplus goods when fellow defenceman and Penguins' primary powerplay quarterback Sergei Gonchar (http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/teams/players/?name=sergei+gonchar) returned a shoulder injury.
Whitney is in the second year of a six-year contract he signed with the Penguins last season. He was chosen fifth overall by the Penguins in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.

PHI has to make room for the Keebler Elf and his $8 million per, and Vanaanen, Metropolit, Minard are the casualties of his return to PHI lineup. I would bet Vaanen and Metropolit get snatch off.

a little bit of an update
Edmonton Oilers forward Ethan Moreau (http://tsn.ca/nhl/teams/players/?name=ethan+moreau) is back at home the day after suffering a scary eye injury against the Minnesota Wild on Saturday night.
Moreau was hit in his right eye by the stick of the Wild's Antti Miettinen (http://tsn.ca/nhl/teams/players/?name=antti+miettinen) late in the third period. After leaving the ice, Moreau was immediately taken to Royal Alexandria Hospital in Edmonton.
While the real extent of the injury is not yet known, surgery was not required on Saturday night. Doctors will continue to monitor the eye through the week to see if that changes.
There is no indication of how long the 33-year-old will be out.
Following the game, Oilers head coach Craig MacTavish expressed concern for his captain.
"We don't have much further to say about Ethan other than he has gone to the hospital and it looks pretty serious.
"He went under his own steam. It looks like the stick gave him a gash on the socket. According to the doctors you could see where it raked across the eye," MacTavish told the Canadian Press.
