Please don't suck! (hey! it worked last time!! )
It was just going to be an interesting match-up with a Western Conf. team, but the plot thickened yesterday.......

Oh! And I forgot to mention. ..... Mr. CL/"Big Dog" always liked EC (mentions that he reminds him a lot of his own son, Eric), so he's looking forward to pulling his #26 jersey out of "retirement" from the back of his closet for Friday's game. :D

A beautiful day wecomes EC back to the RBC for practice doesn't it? And an expected 71 degree day greets his first game day, lol.
I'm happy to be able to watch this one (we'll see if the urge to actually go grows between now and tomorrow night!?) as I thought I'd be out of town.
Looking forward to practice reports and the first media interviews to start showing up. :)

I had good chuckle about the fact that EC is coming back to 70 Degree weather, of course if the trade had been a few days earlier then he would have had snow... which also would have been ironic.

Will be good to see #26 back on the ice again. Maybe it will inspire them to play well at home. We can only hope. :spin:
Hopefully they will have air sickness bags to hand out since we have to look at Olli the Ugly Hairless Freak in yet another jersey.:hurl:

Looking forward to practice reports and the first media interviews to start showing up. :)
First report. He is at practice. Mostly about line combos though and it does appear we will have a Ruutu-Staal-Cole line. Samsonov was moved with Brindy and Eaves. And Ryan might have been sent back to Albany.
No. 26 is back.
Erik Cole took to the ice at the RBC Center today for his first practice with the Canes, the team that traded him away after last season but now has brought him back with hopes he is the final piece needed to reach the playoffs.
General manager Jim Rutherford said Wednesday that having Cole back would have a domino effect on the top three lines.
Canes coach Paul Maurice has had Sergei Samsonov or Albany callup Michael Ryan on Eric Staal's line with Tuomo Ruutu in the past few games.
In pratice today, Cole is working with Staal and Ruutu. Samsonov is on Rod Brind'Amour's line with Patrick Eaves, while Matt Cullen's line remains the same with Ray Whitney and Chad LaRose on the wings.
The fourth line has Dwight Helminen centering Scott Walker and Ryan Bayda, with Tim Conboy also in the fourth-line mix.
Ryan is not at practice today and may have been reassigned to the River Rats. No announcement yet.

^[way up there somewhere] I think the reason Helminen is still up is that we need a center with Jussi out and Brandon still in Albany. Sorry to see Michael Ryan sent back down though. He is speedy.
Speaking of speedy, what a great sight to see #26 out on the ice today at practice! I forgot just how fast he is. As CL posted in the practice thread, lots of smiles all around, it was a pretty loose group. Good turnout, a #26 sign or two and several jerseys spotted in the crowd.

Jokinen has 2 (both with assists from both Iginla and Cammalleri), Cammalleri has his 34th, and even Leopold nets one in his first game on the new team as Calgary is WHIPPING the Flyers 5-1.

OK - we are in a major sucky position after tonight's activity...making this a must win serious game of consequence
11 - Toronto moves into nipping yapping dog territory (4 pts behind us) with the win and 67 points
10 - We have 71 points
9 - Buffohno has 71 points and apparently a tiebreaker at the moment
8/7 - Pens beat Florida and pull even with them at 74 points
6 - Montreal at 75 points
5 - Rangers beat Isles to advance to 76 points and ahead of Montreal
So, the only advancement potential for tomorrow is that we could have 9th place to ourselves if we win and Buf loses. A win in any case leaves us 1 point behind Florida/Pit with a chance to move ahead of one or both on Saturday.
If we lose, Mo's former team could actually be in position to drop us lower by early next week.

We used a set of vouchers to get extra tix to this game so we could take my parents - this was determined prior to the trade deadline, so we had no idea what was going to happen. When I spoke to my mom yesterday, she told me she was going to "get all verklempt" when she saw Cole take the ice :)
Oh, and the team has done quite well when my parents have been in attendance - hopefully the (small) streak continues!

Now this is real kooky- would TNOC just say this in a practice scrum? (From Branecky's Blog) This was yesterday and today's comments from Branecky on Michael Ryan - I actually didn't read this until today, but it seems very wierd to me:
Yesterday's TTS Blog:
Speaking of Ryan, he was put on waivers at noon today and was not at practice.
Today's TTS blog:
Maurice said that Ryan Bayda and Michael Ryan would be healthy scratches for tonight’s game. Contrary to what Maurice said at yesterday’s practice, Ryan was never actually placed on waivers.

Kick-ass first period! Our first line actually looks and performs like a first line!!!! Ruutu always seemed to me like the kind of player that could just fit in and find some kind of niche on any line, but right now he looks like he's just feeding off the energy of that Staal-Cole combination.
I'm so excited to see #26 out there. In his interview he seemed ecstatic after that first period and just about being back with the 'Canes.

Tonight, we earned our pass to stay in the show.
Now, we are in a position to start moving up if we do it tomorrow...
Advancement opportunities with a win:
Pass Pittsburgh - idle
Pass NYR - idle
Pass Buffalo - if they lose to Ottawa
Pass Florida - if the lose to St. Louis
Tie Montreal - and I think we have the tiebreaker there...
So, a win guarantees 8th place - with a little help, we could finish the night in 5th.

I lost all respect for him and the flames 2 years ago in the second round of the playoffs against DET, when Conroy punched one of the Wings after a clean hit smack in the face while they were both laying on the ice and concussed him. Iginla hacked and slashed a Red Wing Halfway up the ice and then finally thier Backup Goalie used his goalie stick like an ax agains another player, I hope he never Wins the Stanely Cup, he is a major jackass and I would never have him on my team, which is sad because when he is not being a Jackass he is a one hell of a player. Once we went up by 5 I was hoping we would just escape uninjured.

Freaking awesome time. No matter what happens, I got my money's worth tonight. Great crowd, great game, and great Italian ice (that's my first time having that at the arena...really good but, the mango tastes more like a fuzzy navel to me).
Man, I knew they'd thug it up in the third. I'm just glad no one appeared to get injured because I was quite concerned. Especially with all the elbows flying out there.
One thing new I saw tonight....these guys were taking up for each other. Where's that been all year. Ruutu is physical but, one thing Cole brings that hasn't been there is a 100% chance of retaliation against anyone taking physical liberties with Staal. Touch him and you're answering to Erik. That should really help.
Now, make it matter by taking care of business tomorrow night, too.
Let's Rock!
We are so f*cked.

Loved Cole's goal celebration/reaction. i think things will be fresher now, i'm glad he's back... we'll see if i continue these thoughts, lol
The Flames are a tad dirty. lots of little **** behind the play, in the corners. little hacks, punches to the ribs, stuff like that. I'm cool with that, as long as it rolls both ways.
Not surprised Nystrom jumped into a fight, he'd been trying to get conboy to go for a while. then seidenberg gave him a reason to give us a power play.
I wont call Iginla a coward, Timmy has gotten a mid-heavyweight reputation. Iginla isnt one to back away from a fight, but he's not stupid. A player of his calibre doesnt belong fighting timmy, boogard, carcillo, (whoever the hell else). He'll even ditch the lid as a courtesy since he wears a visor. not surprised he didnt go, though. Now if Phaneuf did that ****... different story.
to the dumb ass behind me, Aucoin didnt use to play for us, this is Adrian, the better Aucoin that everyone else in the world knows. And that plays defense. Oh, and they didnt have Conboy playing defense, that was Calgary's blue line, he was cherry picking. But go ahead, keep complaining that people dont know the rules, when you cant even note positions. He also felt the need to ***** that either they "should have passed/shot" whenever someone shot/passed. We scored 6 goals, and you have issues with our production, through invisible lanes. The, he was right when Cole passed to brindy on a 2 on 1, Cole must not have gotten the memo that Brindy aint playin so hot this year  (admittedly, tonight was an improvement)
This Jokinen/Iginla set up is going to be bloody scary.

What a great game. I'm on cloud nine. This was easily the most complete game I've seen from this team in at least 2 seasons. I'm extremely emotional about tonight, it's almost like a fairytale on alot of levels. The building was amazing. The Forslund Focus doe early at the first TV timeout, was great.
First up- Kudos to the BADASSES - The Timmays- Gleason & Conboy. I have been an Iginla fan for awhile, I know he straddles an edge, but I thought his antics tonight were a little too bush to defend, I loveed that #6 didn't hesitate to even go right in and pop him in the face when he hit #12. I thought seriously the #12 would get in a fight, cause he didn't seem to hesitate. But #6 came over like a bat out of hell. Conboy v Vandermeer, was good to see, and that ope ice hit by Seids was great.
Now to The Story. I wasn't sure if I would start crying at warm ups when #26 came out for warmups, or when I started seeing all the signs, bedsheets as signs with the welcome back stuff on them. Erik looked like he had 3 extra hops. He seemed to be tryig to stay in his skates and not go nutso out there, but my gosh, there were several rushes where it was like he never left. He/they drew the first 3 penalties. I am loving the Ruutu/Staaal/Cole line. There is some serious jam with them. I loved Rod's game, he should've had that goal in the first- McIlninney (who was left out to dry all night) stole that goal. And what can you say about Whitney? He's really so underrated.I was so bummed I forgot to replinish my hat trick hat in my bag- there I was digging and I forgot I had thrown my hat for #8! I loved the look of a couple of PP's and I do like that they have Cullen out there on the point.
Go Sergei Samsonov. That steal happened right in front of our section, and the goal was a beauty.
So can I get all yappy about my favorite Finn, Joni? He had two brutal turnovers, that he recovered from, then about 2 shifts later, we had this crazy sequence where CGY had that 3 on 1 and the Ditz was back- and sonofa...if he didn't thwart the friggin 3 on 1 !!! Hub turned to me, and says "your Ditz is something else isn't he" Seriously.
Kudos to the building There was some serious jump and energy in the bldg and you could feel everyone wanting the homecoming to be all that. It was.
Bummed that Chuck K. apparently kept talking about a shut out according to hub listening to the in-arena thing- and then a toolbox 3 rows in front of us kept bellowing "PROTECT THE SHUTOUT"!!! along with his kid. Seriously. Cam did a great job especially when he had major stretches of no action.
I thought CGY looked dead at points, I thought they didn't know what to do with the #26/#12/15 troika, and they got overwhelmed, but they also played that phyiscal CGY game, and this crew didn't back down.
Now all the people doing the wave doing a 4 on 4 and then PP, I felt the need to hurt ya'll. nccanes sent me a text late and tells me that Tripp made comments about the Wave on the broadcast. Oh My.
I had to hoot at the ovation extra cheers for Dancin Granny. The building was jumping tonight even with the whole Granny thing.
I'm watching the replay with hub, that save on Brind 'Amour by McIlhinney, is just as awesome as it was live and in person.
None of this night will mean a thing, if we don't kick the Lightning's asses tommorow night. Period end of discussion.

Brindy Played well but he should have had at least 2 goals, seems like he had hands of stone tonight, He chipped two of those at the net and the one where he got a second chance I think most of our players would have buried. However thats really picking nits.

Tripp looks like he fell asleep in the sun today -- total tomato face.
Yeah, Tripp acted like he'd never seen the wave in the Building. He had his "golly gee" voice saying "John, there's a wave going on in the upper and lower levels, I thought that had been retired". Then Cam made that awesome save and he says something like "oh, Cam's killed the wave, everyone has to stand up for that".
But my favorite Tripp comment was in regard to the upcoming "Holiday" saying "if it weren't for drinking, the Irish would rule the world".
Tripp did NOT jinx Cam he pointedly said something about them having accomplished all but 1 thing tonight, and "we all know what that is".
Oh, and when Cole scored he said the RBC was "electric.....Thomas Edison".

Welcome home Colesy we sure did miss ya. :D
I have to admit, when that goalie robbed Brindy in the 1st, I couldn't but help think here we go another back up goalie looking for his first win will have the game of his life. Glad to see I was so very wrong.
It was strange as the score was 0-0, then just like that it was 3-0. And its so good to see Cole get the first goal off his back and loved the celebration. And Staal looked just as happy as Cole did. Good to see the buddies back together and Staal did look energized. I'm loving that line right there. Ruutu compliments them very well.
And I really want LaRose mic'd up, with nothing being cut out. His mouth is always running and I'd love to know what he says to these guys to get them so pissed that they feel the need they have to shove him
Great game and I'm glad my excitement I felt earlier is still with me.

Had such a great, great time. I don't think you could have scripted Cole's return any better (and #26 was one of the lottery numbers last night ... again... btw...)
Have to relay a story about a dumbass cop in our section.
After Ray got his 3rd goal, and the hats started flying, I noticed a cop in the stairway at the bottom of our section (123), pointing at someone and gesturing. I then picked up a hat that landed by my feet and hurled it as far as I could. The cop made eye contact with me, and I'm guessing he was trying to get people to STOP THROWING HATS.... yep.... I see a couple fans inches from the cops face at this point. He's making gestures and pointing at the exit, like he's threatening to eject them. I can clearly read his lips when he said, "You can't throw things on the ice."
I said to Mr. CL, "Has he never heard of a hat trick before?" A couple bigger guys were really giving it to the cop. One guy just kept shouting, "Hat trick!! Hat trick!! It's called a hat trick!!"
After about a minute or two of that, finally our favorite security guy, who's always at the bottom of the stairs, put his hand on the cop's shoulder and said something right into his ear. Hopefully, it was a crash course on the game of hockey, LOL!
Mr. CL took a picture of the cop. He said he was going to send it to the Raleigh P.D., along with a print-out about long-standing hockey traditions.
Anyways..... despite the clueless cop, we really had a blast tonight. It was the women behind us's birthday. With every goal, we shouted, "Happy Birthday!," to her as we high-fived.

Wow on the Raleigh PD not knowing about a hat trick. Just wow.
Someone needs to play #26 in the lottery, lol.
We had a 'first' or celebratory event in our section; On neighbors to our right are proud parents of twins born a couple months ago- the brave parents brought them to the game, and they even made it on the J-tron,kids on laps; and they were as quiet as church mouses. Didn't fuss once. Not bad for their first hockey game! They were even dressed head to toe in Canes infant wear and someone from the promo dept came to our section in the 3rd and brought the babies free Stormy dolls. I was shocked personally, but neat touch.
I heard that caller calling the 12/26 thing a Bro-mance. Hub, who is clueless on all things pop culture-y, was seriously confused and needed an explanation. Let me just say, It was a challenge .

It's almost surreal to me. I'm sitting here at my desk, looking up at the wall, where there's two framed photographs of my husband's of Erik that E. signed. Just about a week ago, we talked about how much we loved seeing them, but at the same time it's so bittersweet to know that he's not a 'Cane anymore.

ROUT IN RALEIGH
Whitney Nets Hat Trick as Hurricanes Dominate Flames
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v295/tonka1960/whitney_75928.jpg
Ray Whitney has seen just about everything in his 17 seasons in the NHL, but he never thought he'd see 300 career goals.
Whitney's hat trick Friday night gave him 300 and helped the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Calgary Flames 6-1.
''I've been bought out twice, on waivers twice,'' Whitney said. ''I've seen it all, that's for sure, so 300, I'll take that. Probably a lot of people didn't think that would happen, myself included.''
He reached the milestone with three power-play goals, giving the Hurricanes their sixth win in eight games as they fight for an Eastern Conference playoff spot.
Carolina outshot Calgary 33-22, nearly shutting out one of the NHL's highest-scoring teams.

1st fight was when Seids absolutely leveled somebody with a clean open ice hit. Nystrom came in attacking and Seids had little choice but to fight. Seids held up well and lots of grappling/dancing. No big blows landed. Eventually Seids pulled him to the ground. Draw.
2nd "fight" was when Iginla was shoving Staal with his stick. Staal took exception and shoved him. He gave Staal a shove in the back as I recall and Timmy flew in and leveled him while simultaneously throwing down his gloves. Iginla totally ran away from Gleason (who would have handed his ass to him in a lunch box), but then said/did something toward Staal enough that Staalsy made a run at him, but there were too many linesmen in the way. Much jawing occurred.
A few minutes later, the main event for the night was Conboy vs. Vandermeer and I would give Conboy a decisive victory. First blow knocked off V's helmet. Conboy pretty much kept pummeling the back of the guys head. No major frontal blows landed, but Conboy landed plenty of punches. Fairly long affair that ended when Conboy pulled him down and fell mostly on top of him. Surprisingly, this one did not make hockeyfights. As others mentioned, Tim C looked very content going to the box!

I don't know if any of y'all noticed but when Iginla politely declined Gleason's invitation to dance and kept goading Staal, Erik Cole stepped up. He was shadowing every move that Iginla made and was talking to Iginla the whole time. I can only imagine what was being said.

Bummed that Chuck K. apparently kept talking about a shut out according to hub listening to the in-arena thing- and then a toolbox 3 rows in front of us kept bellowing "PROTECT THE SHUTOUT"!!! along with his kid. Seriously. Cam did a great job especially when he had major stretches of no action
I heard that guy yelling "PROTECT THE SHUTOUT" He was a few rows behind me and to my left in 121. He yelled it about 3 seconds before Iginla scored. What a tool. I turned around to look and see who it was and yelled up behind me "way to kill Cam's shutout!"

Forgot to mention 1 funny thing that happened. ONe of my kids was at a school event and thus, I was not at the game, but driving to pick them up during the 2nd period. I had exchanged a few texts with SoCal, CL, and my son (all at the game) during the first. As I was in the car, my phone rang...it was CL. I couldn't figure out why on earth she'd be calling DURING the 2nd period. Well, I believe she must have hit her call button by accident because she never said a thing.
All I could hear were these big roars and screaming and then basic silence. Since I was listening on the radio I knew her call was "ahead" so I actually continued to listen to it. I thought it might be fun to hear the goal horn over the phone before Chuck called the goal. Totally entertained me to hear the crowd go crazy and then quiet and then hear the same via the radio a few seconds later.
Eventually the call got disconnected and I never spoke to CL nor heard a goal. But it entertained me as I drove.

 Sorry!
That must have been when my phone (unknown to me) had fallen out of the pocket of my hoodie I was wearing under my jersey. I think it was the end of the 2nd Period-- I stood up, and the guy sitting to my left said, "Is that your phone?" pointing at it on the floor between our two seats.
That makes me think of the Blackberry commercial of the guy "butt-dialing" his wife.
(phone has a real nice scratch down the side of it, now... to go along with a couple other dings, and I've only had it for 3 weeks! I swear.... I just can't NOT drop a phone on concrete!! )

after seeing that hit, its pretty clear why nystrom jumped seidenberg. seids knee hit whoever it was' knee. it wasnt a knee on knee hit, since the hit initiated up top, but if you didnt see that, it could look like knee on knee. i thought it might have been a knee (on the flames guy), during the game.
oh, one thing that really got me about out play... all the offsides during the first period. they cleaned up a bit later on, but seriously, there must have been 10 offsides calls.
edit: i keep thinking of bunches of little things i noticed.... Cam and Phaneuf were talking quite a bit during warmups. As were Cole and i think it was Kipper. Wonder what the connections there are... Well, the Cole thing you could guess former division rival wondering how he felt about the trade...
edit2: ah, Ward and Phaneuf played 3 years together in Red Deer.

I am amazed at how often Oiler fans follow our games, guess that's why i'm always on their board. But these 2 comments made me smile:
The RBC crowd has been great tonight.
boy was Cole looking happy to be back with the 'Canes, he was flying, and already making his presence felt.

Let's Rock!
Fixed that for ya. ;)

I heard that caller calling the 12/26 thing a Bro-mance. Hub, who is clueless on all things pop culture-y, was seriously confused and needed an explanation. Let me just say, It was a challenge .
I was a bit slow on that one, also. Actually, a bit relieved after I realized he didn't say romance. :)

Eaves is my new Letowski
Since you posted this, Eaves:
1. has no points
2. overskating his own puckhandling to put himself offside on a 2 on 0 breakaway
3. has taken a few pretty bad tripping / holding penalties
Way to go! ;]
In further jest, my avatar can be changed to Eaves for a small fee. Gelinas and Williams are previous casualties. For a larger fee, I can send off my jersey to have Eaves' name stitched on, if you -really- want him gone. ;]
