Canes get three ESPN2 dates
Network to show games against Boston, New York, Detroit
By LUKE DECOCK, Staff Writer

RALEIGH -- The Carolina Hurricanes will make three national TV appearances next season, all on ESPN2.

The network will televise three games: Carolina at the Boston Bruins on Oct. 23, the New York Rangers at Carolina on Jan. 8, and Carolina at the Detroit Red Wings on Jan. 31. The Canes were scheduled for four ESPN or ESPN2 games last season but made only three after the network dropped one game.

ESPN offered the Canes the three slots to broker a date switch between the Hurricanes and N.C. State that would allow the Wolfpack to host Clemson in a nationally televised football game on Thursday, Oct. 16, at Carter-Finley Stadium. The Hurricanes had reserved that date for a home game at the RBC Center.

Based on what the rest of the Southeast Division got from ESPN, it's a good thing the Canes made the deal.

The division champion Tampa Bay Lightning and the Washington Capitals will make three national appearances each and the Atlanta Thrashers two.

The Florida Panthers will make just one.

The usual suspects fill out the majority of ESPN's schedule: The Red Wings will make a total of 19 appearances on ESPN and ESPN2, while the Colorado Avalanche will make 17. Five more teams are in double digits.

ABC also will have five broadcast dates.

The Hurricanes expect to release their local TV schedule next week. Carolina vice president Ken Lehner said that between cable partner Fox Sports Net South and the team's HDTV operation with WRAZ-50 and Time Warner Cable, he expects 69 or 70 games to be televised locally.

"We're going back and forth to see what works for our HD partners and what works for Fox," Lehner said. "We're down to just one date that's not confirmed."

The Canes could have as many as 15 games on HDTV this season, up from 10 last season. FSNS, in the second year of a five-year contract with the team, is required to broadcast a minimum of 55 Carolina games.

Good to hear, but I do believe we still have one of the worst TV deals in the NHL. So a person with basic cable will probably get 55, maybe a couple more games. I don't have HDTV, so I get stuck sitting around the radio those nights.

As for ESPN, that's awesome that the Detroit/Canes game got on ESPN... that'll be fun.

Just for clarification. You don't need an HDTV, just digital cable for those games.

Either way, I've got the basic 45 or so channels. (pssh, listen to me complaining while children in Africa are starving.)

But hopefully I can compensate by going to a lot of games this year.

Canes get three ESPN2 dates

My memory may be failing me entirely here, but am i right in saying that the Canes are getting more national appearances after finishing dead last than they did after going all the way to the Finals?

Something doesn't jive there. Perhaps i'm just confused...

IIRC, the Canes got one less number of ESPN dates from finishing dead last than they did from making the SC Finals. Here were last season's ESPN games...

October 9th vs. the Rangers
January 29th vs. the Leafs
February 5th at the Sharks

and

April 6th vs. the Islanders

Keep in mind, though, that we got the games as the result of negotiating a change in our schedule because of an N.C. State football game. ESPN, the Canes, the NHL, the NCAA, and the Pack were all involved in the switch. Without this, we would have gotten zero ESPN games, which would have been less (duh) than after the SCF run.

OK, that's all good then. Still, you would think that going to the SCF's would earn you more than 4 games! Had it been the Avs or the bloody Rangers going to the Finals, they'd have been showing their blasted training camp scrimmages on ESPN during prime time. But then, that's the Avs and the Rangers...

Ah yes, that's right.

Now if we could just get that Pay-Per-View option for the non-televised games on the road in Calgary...

Yes, please! Although, it would probably only be on TWC and us bumpkins here in Charter-land would be SOL.

I'm glad to know that I am not the only one who notices how much attention ESPN gives the razzin' frazzin' Ranjerks. You would swear that they had finally made an appearance in the SC playoffs or something, as many ESPN games as they always seem to get.

Hey--let's be happy about any games.

Am I wrong in my inference that Fox will show more games? Was that 2 or 3 years ago some weekend (Sat. afternoon mostly) games were on Fox? Not Fox Sports, but the regular Channel 13 (or was it the WB?) For those of us w/o digital, we'll just have to visit our local watering hole. Good plan to me!
