OK, guys-- keep the foot on the gas! But, you'd better play a full 60 minutes if you want to end the Sens latest surge. Crush 'em! Kill their hopes!!

Don't forget whose house it is!!

Puck-drop at 7:00PM

LET'S GO 'CANES!!

All these games coming fast and furious. I hope the players have more energy and nerves left than I do. :D

As CL said, just keep your foot on the gas and don't take any team for granted at this point. :spin:

Crush Spezza... I really don't like him a lot.

I look for a loud and rowdy crowd. :nanner:

Sadly I shall not be at this game as I'll be driving back from Rockville, MD tomorrow night. So you all cheer extra hard on my behalf. This is the first home game I've missed since before Christmas. I think I've been to over 30 games this year which is a record for me.

Hate like all get out to miss this one, but thank GOD for XM Radio!

Ottawa has been on a tear lately, 9-1 in their last 10 games, and coming here on a 5 game winning streak. We've been great at busting other team's losing streaks, let's see what we can do to bust their winning streak.

I expect another big game out of Joe Corvo. And of course our Ruutu > their Ruutu.

This is the last game that I have in my tickets (except I've got a work BOGO for 4/2 that I'll probably use, lol). So I'm going to tell my work boobs that I've GOT to get out of this place on time for once.

LTD I hear you about XM broadcasting games when you are out of our market. I can't imagine NOT having it when I've traveled now that I do. I've sat in my car at Soccer tournaments, popped open the hatch to listen while camping, etc. I can't believe I'll have to listen to the final 4 games of the season in this manner!

livinthedream
03-24-2009, 08:12 AM
Yeah, it's amazing how XM has changed my travel life for the better. I'm in the car several hours today going to a customer meeting, then I leave for DC this evening probably around 7 pm and pull into the hotel around midnight. At least I know I have something decent to listen to on the radio the whole time.

Do you happen to have front-row seats for the Panthers? Sorry I will hush.

Um.. Go Canes!

Y'all will have to cheer for me, too. I'm leaving for San Diego tomorrow for a 5-day business trip.

Feel free to text (you know who you are!). In fact... the 1st intermission will probably be in-progress when I walk-off the plane. Would be lovely to turn on my phone and see good news!! :D

Ugh. Can you believe that Ottawa is 9-1 in its last 10? And that after we beat them 2-1 at home, they've beaten us 5-1 (in the middle of that 5-game suck-fest losing streak in January) and 4-2? They still have 10 games left, with games at Atlanta, Tampa, Florida, Montreal, and Toronto all being quite winnable for them, and if they win their home games as well ... they might even have an idea of a miracle playoff run going here. Yeah they are 7 points out, but that's plummeting, 3-5-2 in their last 10 Montreal, who they just beat and they still have a game remaining against.

Wow. The only team in the league with a better record in their last 10 than us is: the Ottawa Senators.

We'd better come ready to play, ready to STAY OUT OF THE EFFING PENALTY BOX PLEASE, and for the love of all that is good about hockey, somebody keep an eye not only on their big guns (that goes without saying) but please, on Mike Fisher and whoever they have on the team with less than 5 goals! Donovan, Ryan Shannon, Neil, Winchester, Jarkko -- watch out for those dudes please! Hell, Filip Kuba is probably going to score on us. Damn. We're so f*cked. At least McAmmond won't be there to score on us for this one.

edit: wow, even though yes it would be a miracle run to make it, looks like the Ottawa Citizen at least went through the work of detailing the scenario:

Seriously?? David Cook?

I am listening to RF on 99.9 the Fan, he just said he got a text from former Steeler's Head Coach Bill Cowher (and Raleigh resident - they're good friends)- his text said, "you guys have me hooked, I'm becoming a Canaic". I'd say that's pretty neat.

CL- you've just made me homesick! My parents are in Carlsbad, my youngest sis is in Rancho Penasquitos and my middle sis is in Mission Valley. Wave for me! :- and enjoy San Diego! There are also lots of places you can go and watch the games via Center Ice. (although it'll be what 4pm PST and you'll be working likely- oy never mind)

My plane lands at 4:35PM, so that's 7:35PM here. It's actually a travel day, so I'm free until Thursday morning... but I'll have to check-out my surroundings, first, and see if it's worth trying to make the last two Periods.

I'll actually be in LaJolla at the Hyatt Regency. :D

Very neat. I'm trying to stay away from the light, but hearing that kinda makes me think about all the average Joes who might be starting to see the light too and get a bit fired up about the prospects.....of the light NOT being a train.

The triangle can be such a fun place when ......I'll just say no more.

I just want to acknowledge that my positive thoughts in this thread were countered by my internet search looking for online coin design tools so I could see what a "we're so f*cked" coin would look like. (couldn't find one)

Indeed. I just know of NO other place like this place when....... ;)

So this AM when I had the hop to jump out of bed for my gym date, knowing it's Game Day (ya'll!) I actually pick through the paper in the driveway to get to the sports page- something I've not done in FOREVER. Ironically, I found this from Luke:

Canes bring the noise at home, again (http://www.newsobserver.com/796/v-print/story/1457200.html)

Love this from our unsung hero/leader:

If the Canes do make the playoffs, they can look back at their success at the RBC Center -- and the fan support they have re-energized -- as a major reason why.
"The Washington game the other night, when it went 3-1 and there were still probably seven or eight minutes left, just before a faceoff you heard that crowd start roaring," Whitney said. "It felt like the playoffs again, when they start cheering and nothing's going on."

During TV timeouts or before a faceoff after the timeout, I will often look around the building and then to the bench or the ice and if it's been particularly rowdy or people or going crazy- I like to look at the players, and a couple times in that WSH game it was funny to watch certain players look around at the crowd, which we've all seen them do, but there are some who seem to take it in and a couple who appear to be laughing cause "nothing is going on". Our building is unique. We must embrace that.

CL- enjoy La Jolla- The Sporting Club @ Aventine in the Hyatt is easily the best gym in the country. :- /jealous!

Now on to more important matters. I found a roll session in Burlington, NC, that runs from 7:30 to 9:30 tonight and as y'all know by now I really need to practice my roll. Because as I stated in the last Home game thread if you watch the video of my roll, on my Facebook page, you can clearly see my head is totally in the wrong place. But since the Team needs me at the RBC Center tonight. I will forgo the rolling practice and take one for the Team. I hope they don't let me down.

Thanks! Yeah, no hassles of trying to tell the airline that my kayak is a windsurfer. (because for some reason the airlines charge a cheaper rate for windsurfers than kayaks.) I could of just thrown a boat in the back of my truck strapped it down and go. I also found a session in Chapel Hill for tonight but decided against that one because it ran from 5:30 to 8:25. I don't think it's your age, LTD -- I think it's that you've been lucky enough to not hit upon one of her (http://www.delilah.com/home/home.html)stations when you've been dialing through the radio. I remember hearing her when I lived in WV and that was more than 10 years ago. She's a bad version of Dr. Phil, hosting a long radio show, playing sappy ass music with sappy ass dedications and crap. Check out 101.5 between 7 and midnight some weeknight and you'll see just awful chc's threat was! :)

As for the game, it makes me smile to see Rod without that monkey on his back, like his casual post-game interview. I can only imagine how good he feels.

livinthedream
03-25-2009, 09:27 PM
He explained it in the post-game interview. It had to do with the top line being out of synch when one of the Eric/ks (I think it was Cole but not 100% sure) was in the locker room getting a skate adjustment and Staal and Ruuty were out on a long shift and were winded and he wanted to get the three of them rested and back on rotation together. I probably butchered the description but that was the gist of why he did it.

Ex-59Larose here (changed my name)

Seriously. The guy has been awesome down this stretch. I heard them talking about Roddie on NHL Live I believe on Tuesday. And they were talking about how Brindy said he isn't retiring. And how it seems Brindy has one mission on his mind and its to get this team to the playoffs.

Anyway, that was one hell of a game. These guys continue to battle back and don't give up. And for the first time all year, I wasn't worried when we went down. I just knew these boys would find a way to win.

That was a monster hit by Ruuuuuuuu. Holy crap. Just saw the replay on NHL the Fly. Had the Sens announcers and they agreed, good open ice hit.

I heart these guys

^^ I choose to ignore games in hand for fun comparisons like that :D

That was a friggin' awesome game and my ears are still ringing from the volume in the 3rd - especially after Babs goal. Although, I think whoever said (in a previous thread) that Canesvision turned up the volume was correct.

It was 96.1 Rock night and they were doing lots of stuff related to that, but I think the best had to be the KISS cam featuring "Lick it Up" and a cartoon Gene Simmons making inappropriate licking motions.

Dancin' Granny got the full treatment with Ron the Ref and Stormy coming down to her and giving her a guitar (Guitar Hero variety) to dance and play to Paradise City. I'm pretty sure the scoring started after that

Anyway, good hits, bad fight (they didn't let Conboy go with their Rutuu), nice grinding get it done game. Corvo continues his points trend against his old team. Brindy gets a big goal and the Babchuk Blast comes through (It was great seeing him celebrate right in front of us - I'm really happy for him)

Anyway, some fool left the light at the end of the tunnel on again.

Maybe it's a red one for a kicked in goal (although in the arena replay, it did look like his leg was being moved by a Senator leg kicking it. Just saying). A few seriously egregious misses by the refs including Timmy getting high sticked that I would probably argue before the waived off goal though...

ETA - That Ruutu hit rocked. Schubert looked like he left the ice just before Ruu flattened him - so can't say I have much sympathy for him going down. Also - how could I forget - No VAMPIRA tonight!!

This was not an easy game. that puck was jumping all over the place. The ice was crazzzzy as all get out, it appears it's getting worse- then you could see everyone was trying to be careful and then there was some of the ol' paralysis by analysis and people making some crazy ass plays.

I felt the building was restlessly dead if that makes sense. Everyone was waiting for something to happen- and get fired up. I loved how everyone went berszerk after the Brind 'Amour goal and Babs' Bomb was just on time.

Holy crap, the Ruutu hit on Schubert was another bomb. How does a mild mannered dude who was chatting with the little girl who was the Time Warner starter of the game before the anthems, and then do that?:lol: It's like Superman. Two different dudes.

So Jarrko and Conboy were about to kill each other- made me laugh how they were cussing each other out in the box.

Cam sure makes things look easy.

I loved the 99.9 caller who 'wondered' if there was something 'wrong' with #12- "he's off, he was horrrible" I guess working his butt off against Spezza, Heatley, Alfie isn't doing much. and the 2 different times he basically walked in and created something out of nothing, was 'horrible'.

The 96 Rock Night was funny- During warmups they played a video using pictures of Corvo, Staal and Ruutu to "We will Rock you" they had Corvo playing drums, Ruutu playing guitar, and Staal (with a still photo of the baby bird mouth) 'singing' the song. HILAROUS.

Since we're not back in the building until 4/2- this is a good way to go...... and nice to see Whitney get his 500th point, and yeah! 9 straight home wins!

Alicia

I was chatting with neighbors in the 1st intermission, but someone watching the FSN player interview replay said that Jussi said something about wanting to stay here? Then JF said he said he's never been in such a positive coaching environment? Anyone hear it and concur?

I'm almost stunned about FL collapsing...again. I mean, they blew it in a few minutes against CBJ, they got a gift of a late 5 on 3 on us, only to blow it (and actually ALMOST in regulation with Staal's late chance) in OT and now blow it in Buffalo? I was reading that they haven't had games that meant anything this late in the season in 8 years or something. Crazy.

Holy Crap.

Buffalo scores three goals in 127 seconds.

Great game once both teams decided to wake up. WTH was up with the time out Mo took right after we scored?

I thought that move along with putting the 4th line out immediately after they scored were absolutely brilliant coaching moves. And now, I must tell myself to "f*ck off" for saying something positive about the coaching.

9 in a row at home. I remember the last time we did that.

This was a hard fought game against a good team that is finally playing like a good team. Excellent win. And that Elliot kid is good, BTW.

We were about to run off the road along with you, SoCal, when the idiot on 99.9 was saying Staal had an "off" game. We thought he was the best player on the ice for the first two periods and he wasn't bad in the third, some others just stepped it up. That line was great.

The ice is not only screwing up puck handling (no, 99.9 callers, we don't have such a huge problem with passing....maybe you noticed it's been BOTH teams every game? That's cause it's the ice.) now it's effing up the skating. There were three spots on the ice where multiple players fell. Behind the south end goal, at the southwest blue line and along the boards on the southeast side. Ridiculous.

Are the officials on strike? Just wondering because I haven't seen them calling penalties lately. *roll*

This season sure has become one heckuva ride all of the sudden, huh?:D

That was a monster hit by Ruuuuuuuu. Holy crap. Just saw the replay on NHL the Fly. Had the Sens announcers and they agreed, good open ice hit.

It is going to be tough not to think about clean hits like that when discussion about maybe bringing the OHL's "no hits to the head" rule to the NHL. It was clean shoulder on head, but in the OHL that's a penalty, and that is something that a lot of discussion has been around, especially here with Cullen, Letowski, Francis, Willis, MacDonald, all these Canes who at one time got brain-scrambled on clean hits shoulder to head.

Some of those 96 Rock promos were cute. And damn you to whoever coined "that portly kid" because I can't think of anything else when I see him on the JT - cute idea to get him in on the clip. (even if he's way over exposed and as premeditated as AO's hot stick)

Wow- we're finally starting to look like a good team...dare I say...a playoff team!

I agree with what Rod said in the post-game interview, that since they've started to see some good results, the whole team is really buying into the way they need to play every night. The energy level is definitely there, & Cam's steady play is giving us a chance in every game.

I have to say that I was especially impressed with Babchuk tonight. He really messed up on Ottawa's goal by losing the guy in front of the net, but you could tell he knew exactly what he did wrong & was furious with himself. Then he goes & scores the GWG. He has improved so much as an all-around player, & I am more than happy to eat my words that he would never be a good player in this league:)

Great outcome but the first 2 periods were sloppy and almost boring. Thank goodness for us that both teams played that way. We didn't even get excited when the first goal went in.. we saw him "kicking motion".

I think the refs were asleep because the game was so boring for awhile. So many missed penalties. I saw at least 3 cross-checkings that they completely ignored. I think the turning point was the Conboy/Ruutu fight. Got the crowd and the team energized. We laughed our arses off watching Tim talking to Jarko in the box.

I am so proud of these games for recognizing what has to be done and doing it. And I saw a quote from "Scoring Machine Babs" in the N&O this morning talking about the crowd..and he thanked each and everyone.

When listening to 99.9 after the game, some people were upset about the opposing players beginning their skate before our anthem is finished. I saw Federov do this and it burned me a new one. JF said in the NFL, if they break the line during the Anthem, they are fined. Any opinions on this?

Mona, yeah it was Maniscalco who mentioned it and JF agreed on the NFL thing; this is two games straight that callers have called in specifically to talk about players WSH- Federov, last night Spezza/Heatley, that start skating before the anthem is done. I know Federov's routine for the last several years is to skate off when the last line is sung- it's his 'warm up' thing. Several other players do it around the league. Don't like it, but I 'get it'. Don't approve of it, but as the hockey players say --- it is what it is..... :-

Normally- since I noticed that most hockey players are like dudes with ants in their pants and can't stand still, and I've watched a ton of hockey games where they actually show the anthems being sung on the broadcasts; and not just go to commercial- I have kinda blown it off as the nervous energy/routine -insert reason here- and it's not bothered me "much". Having said that, what the heck is so hard about waiting? I am typically looking up at the flag when the anthem is being sung, so I don't watch the players on the ice in the building- but Mr. Socal is usually watching, cause I think as an ex service member, he is mindful of what 'it looks like'. So he said to me last night after the anthems were sung, that Mr Spezza AND Mr. Heatley carried on a full on conversation during the entire Canadian anthem. I asked him 'for real'? and he said YEP. My first reaction was Don Cherry would have cardiac arrest if he saw his "good Canadian boys" yapping during the anthem.

So here's my take on this- If we're gonna get all upset about guys skating off before the anthem is done- then I'll throw out there, it's far more insulting to ME, that people insist on yelling "Red" out during the anthem. Either sing the song, or don't yell stuff. That's just me, but it's been 10+ seasons and I cringe everytime I hear the blurting. I'm not draped in the red/white/blue everyday of my life, but I consider myself old-fashionedly patriotic, and I make no apologies for it. It was how I was raised, others are the same, and so be it- but if I'm going head-to-head on this issue, then players stay on the line, don't move your butts, and fans, sing the song don't yell one word out cause it's frankly pretty disrespectful.

It's been interesting that there have been a bunch of calls now on the players not staying standing until the anthem is done. It's not anything 'new' per se, but it's gotten people's attention.

c-girl
03-26-2009, 07:46 AM
We saw Federov do it the other night and it burned us up. Everybody around us was talking about it. I get that he's Russian and all but really he does play for the team in this country's capital. And then last night we were like WTH? What is so darned hard about waiting for the song to finish? I don't remember seeing any of our guys doing that kind of thing. And, Socal, I absolutely agree with you about yelling out things during the anthem. I think anything less than standing quietly with hats in hand or singing the real words along with the singer is extremely disrepectful. It's only two minutes, for crying out loud. Surely people can behave respectfully for two minutes.

ButtersSaysNo
03-26-2009, 07:51 AM

andyt
03-26-2009, 08:04 AM
I remember reading something a hundred years ago that it's impolite to applaud after the anthem. It might have been a Boy Scout manual or something similar. So I don't. I put my hat back on and sit down.

Besides yelling "red", the boys in 328 have decided to yell "air" or something else random during the anthem. And yeah, it bothers me that the players skate off before it's over.

caneshockeychick
03-26-2009, 08:27 AM
Well, the Caps fans in the Bldg on Sat night sang "O" really loud and finished it with "vechkin" during the anthem. Different strokes for different folks. Does it tick me off? Yes. The screaming of "Red" does too. In Atlanta, they scream "Brave" really loud and add an "ess" to the end of it. Oh, and when O'Neill was here, the crowd seemed to punch up the "O" too. Whatever.....

Its all disrespectful to me but some people just feel differently about it than others I guess and seeing as how its not, nor should it be forced, I respectfully sing it (not well but still) and try to turn a blind eye to those around me who don't respect it like I do.

I do, however, think players should have some modicum of respect during the playing of the anthems and I definitely would hope that on a world stage, like the Olympics, they would not be doing what some of them do. I remember how impressed I was when I used to watch Cole actually sing the song.

Joni always seems to be so cool and calm, and he skates that way, almost to the point where he comes across as being somewhat lackadaisical and just floating around out there on the ice (SoCal's ditz factor), until you realize that he's just so dang talented he just makes skating look so effortless sometimes.

But I've definitely noticed that he seems to have developed a bit more of a mean streak lately, hitting with more force and pushing and shoving in front of the net. And him getting inside Mike Green's head the other night was just awesome.

As a costume designer, one of my "jobs" is to research etiquette rules when we're doing period shows-- so, I'm pretty schooled on hat rules.

It goes back to a time when women's hats were always anchored down with often ornate hat pins.

^^^great highlights as always.

Not sure if anyone else goes to TSN but Dancing Granny (LOL) and LTD's fave player made the highlights from last night. I am not really good at setting up links to video, etc but if you go the main page tsn.ca/nhl look on the right hand column you will see it.

^^Actually, by the rules of etiquette, women are never, ever required to remove their hats indoors, or for the Anthem-- only men.

As a costume designer, one of my "jobs" is to research etiquette rules when we're doing period shows-- so, I'm pretty schooled on hat rules.

It goes back to a time when women's hats were always anchored down with often ornate hat pins.

They may not be required to, but when they're wearing the same ballcap as the guy next to them -- or, worse, one of those pink ones :hurl: -- I think it should be an equal standard of etiquette. If we were still talking about big, fancy hats with hat pins and such, I'd totally understand, but "hat hair" is not, IMO, an acceptable reason.

I'm a "get your frickin' hat off your head" guy. I hate to see caps on during the anthem and I hate to see them on in a restaurant. I think it's a kick back to how my grandmother taught me to do things. I was always supposed to take my hat off in an elevator if a woman got on, for crap's sake (and I still do, but pretty much take it off if I'm inside a place where anyone lives). My father in law, at one of his first Canes games, popped some big guy on the back with his own doffed cap during the anthem to tell the guy to remove his headgear. He just said, "show some respect to your country... what are you a communist?"

From USFlag.org

(http://www.usflag.org/flagetiquette.html)The Salute
To salute, all persons come to attention. Those in uniform give the appropriate formal salute. Citizens not in uniform salute by placing their right hand over the heart and men with head cover should remove it and hold it to left shoulder, hand over the heart. Members of organizations in formation salute upon command of the person in charge.

The Pledge of Allegiance and National Anthem

The pledge of allegiance should be rendered by standing at attention, facing the flag, and saluting.
When the national anthem is played or sung, citizens should stand at attention and salute at the first note and hold the salute through the last note. The salute is directed to the flag, if displayed, otherwise to the music.

CL is right about women and their hats, but so is KB. Because women had such elaborate hats back in the day with trimmings and flowers and ribbons and knackwurst and pins, removing them was a an undertaking for the National Guard. They were not to remove them, even during the anthem. But if a woman is wearing a casual hat, she does not get the exemption.

So, for women, a formal hat does not get removed. A ballcap does.

Here's (http://www.villagehatshop.com/hat_etiquette.html) a pretty cool write-up about some of the odd rules with hats.

ETA: This is a GDT... so, yea Canes! You bunch of worthless losers.

Exactly. The zipper wasn't patented until 1913, and briefs weren't sold until 1935, which is why I don't wear underwear and always have my fly down.

[insert joke about standing at attention during the anthem.]

Just do what I do. Take the ballcap off for them if they don't. :D
