Dang. After our March, kinda hate to see the month end. Anyhow, talk about April stuff here.

Games of most consequence on the docket tonight:

Slugs vs. Atlanta - GO THRASHERS - win in REGULATION

Devils vs. Penguins - GO DEVILS - win in REGULATION

Oh, what the heck...Leafs, y'all don't have anything to lose, go out and kick some Flyer ass.

If you're channel flipping - I should probably put this in the ex-Canes thread NHL Network has the TSN broadcasts on Tuesdays (Leafs v FLyers) , and our SCWC (Stanley Cup Winning Coach) is in Torts' former seat on The Panel. Your profile gets heightened when you get on that panel. Hoping this will help PL land his next gig, and that's coming.

Wow. Pens just put two past Brodeur 36 seconds apart.

Hmmm...maybe our win in NJ wasn't the PGE we thought it was.

Honest to GAWD, will someone please smack Bob Errey and that idiot Paul Steigerwald NOW? Cause clearly the only people who love The Neckbreaker besides his mother is those two.

Scenario- Neckbreaker lays a "check" on Dainus Zubrus oh, about 10 seconds after the puck was all the way down the ice- Zubrus takes exception and smacks Neckbreaker, while the two Toolboxes Errey & Steigerwald, go on and on about "an old fashioned hipcheck" and Errey, who is between the benches screams "watch out Brooks!" cause Zubrus was after his ass. They would not shut up, yet the ref had his arm all the way up the whole time and neither Toolbox even caught that he was calling the penalty (interference) on Neckbreaker.

I get the broadcasters love the teams they call games for- believe me, I know- we have TRIPP, but good grief, you never see Tripp whine on about a call like these two dopes. It's just embarassing. Oh for the days of Mike Lange & Ed Olyzck. Seriously.

LMAO- they just showed the commercial for Chad's Day in the Life.

I've really never experienced a season like this where teams that are fighting for playoff spots are kicking the butts of teams that have comfortably secured their playoff status.

Boston, New Jersey, San Jose, Detroit, Washington, Philadelphia, Chicago have all gone into a funk, questioning their status as Cup contenders.

Will make for an interesting playoffs.

Lots of teams seem to slide a bit once they've clinched or at least come close, particularly eventual winners. I seem to recall y'all going through a tough patch late in the Cup year, Detroit did too. A slump due to injuries or out and out fatigue is one thing. A slump due to lack of focus, enh, playoff teams tend to correct that pretty quick once the second season begins.

I seem to recall that slump of ours carried into the 1st round and we almost got knocked out of the post season. another team that started slumping prior to the end of the season, Detroit, never did recover and was knocked out in the first round by Edmonton. So while you hope to recover from the slump its not always the case.

I was thinking this morning about the "poor" FL fans being disappointed at our game's outcome, but then realized that we're finally in a position that we're far enough up in the standings that this was a game that sucked either way for them, lol. And really they probably wanted us to win so the Rangers stayed w/in striking distance.

Taylor Pyatt is one of my favorite role players (and a Thunder Bay native) it must be the pretty blue eyes and those long eyelashes. Just heard on XM a bit ago, his fiancee was killed in a crash on vacation in Jamaica. They were to be married in the summer. Very sad:

Canucks statement on passing of Carly Bragnalo
Friday, 04.03.2009 / 1:47 PM / News (http://www.nhl.com/ice/newsindex.htm?location=%2Fnews&view=headline)
Vancouver, B.C. – It is with deep regret that the Vancouver Canucks (http://canucks.nhl.com/) today announced that Carly Bragnalo, fiancée of Canucks forward Taylor Pyatt (http://www.nhl.com/ice/player.htm?id=8467881), has passed away. Bragnalo was 27-years-old.

"Today the Canucks lost a member of our family," said Canucks General Manager, Mike Gillis. "Carly was a lovely and generous young woman who shared her spirit for life with our players, their spouses and their extended families. We will support the Bragnalo family, Taylor and his entire family in any way we can during this very difficult time."

Looks like the Devils finally woke up -- 3 goals in the 2nd, but they gave up the 3-2 lead and are tied 3-3 with the Lightning. At home.

And Philly was up 6-0 (5 first period goals, chased Gerber) and now is up 8-5 in the 3rd. Wow.

Sabres-Caps tied at 4.

Thrashers-Panthers tied at 1. Kovalchuk. Kovalchuk. KOVALCHUK! The power of Kovalchuk compels you!

SoCalcaniac
04-03-2009, 08:25 PM
I'm finding mild entertainment in the fact that PHI is beating TO 8-5 - Gerbs got pulled for Cujo then Wilson put him back in, (It was 5-0 after the 1st) and the Leafs of course are crawling right back in it. I'm laughing because everyone is yapping about the Richards/Carter thing and the same problem still exists in Philly that's been their story for years - they have NO goalie.

I'll say this- we're up 5-0 right now, and we're shuttin' the door on the freaking Maple Leafs. The fact that they can't cause their devil-eyed goalie blows chunks, shows they should be very afraid of whoever they play in the 1st round.

Meanwhile the Slugs are truly like Slugs, they won't die. The Caps were winning 4-3 in the 3rd now it's tied. The Caps had extended 5 on 3's early and they shoulda closed the door too.

2 points. 1 win OR 2 OTLs would clinch vs. Florida, 1 win would clinch vs. Buffalo, but 2 OTLs vs. Buffalo goes into tiebreakers I honestly don't even want to find out about. I think it is head-to-head and then bizarro world like overall 82-game goal differential. They have 3 points to our 4 in the season series, with one game in the series remaining, our last currently scheduled home game late next week.

Win and we're in.

Yup. And also have 4 chances for the Panthers (5 for the Sabres) to lose in regulation or pick up 2 OTLs, etc. (And with a win and a Rangers loss tomorrow, we clinch at least 7th.)

While we're on the subject of Staals this morning.

Youngest of 4 Staal brothers step away from NHL (http://www.newsobserver.com/796/story/1470511.html)

SAN ANTONIO -- Jared Staal is a step away from becoming the fourth Staal brother in the NHL.

The 18-year-old signed an amateur tryout contract with San Antonio of the American Hockey League on Friday.

The Rampage are the AHL affiliate of the Phoenix Coyotes, who drafted the youngest Staal in the second round of last year's draft. The 6-foot-3 right wing will spend the rest of the season with the Rampage.

His three brothers are all playing in the NHL: Eric (Carolina), Marc (N.Y. Rangers) and Jordan (Pittsburgh).

Staal had 52 points (19-33) in 67 regular-season games with the Ontario Hockey League's Sudbury Wolves. He added one assist in three playoff games before the Wolves were eliminated last week.

So in between the 2nd and 3rd last night, Avery decided it would be a good idea to smack Tim Thomas on the back of the head with his stick as they were skating off the ice and then badly pretend it was an accident.

Thomas went after him and got a real good body shot in on him before the rest of the Rags came in to protect the turtling dipsh!t.

How many times are they going to suspend this guy before he gets banned? Or at least to the point where no one will sign him?

It was great to see JWill get that goal and 2 assists last night against PHX. It was a classic JWill shot and when I saw his celebration, I felt a little sad for him. His last 'great moment' on the ice was June 19th 2006. he's not going to the post season, but you could see in his muted celebration (mini fist pump) that the first goal as a King was a small victory in a way. He's just been through a ton.

I saw that Avery garbage live as it happened, I was so proud of Tim Thomas for barreling down to pop him in the head. Avery really is A JOKE and a freakin' sissy.

Watching that Pens vs FLA game was horrid. No atmosphere in that bldg in Miami, and we coin tossed to figure out which feed to watch- the homer Bob Errey/Paul Steigerwald feed or the homer Potvin/Goldstein feed. We got Potvin. It sucked, and seemed like the game took 5 hours to play. I'm just wondering IF the Panthers get in, if anyone down there will really care.

First on Avery. I didn't see the play happen live because I was either heading out to the RBC or already there when it happened. But I've seen the replays. Once again he pulls his crap and then turtles or hides behind his team when someone challenges him. I thought it was great that Thomas went after him after what Avery did. But of course Avery would not man up and take responsibilty for his actions. No he let his teammates go in and challenge Thomas. The League, IMHO, if it does not want to be considered to be more like a sideshow like the WWE, needs to step in and suspend sideshow boob avery. (no caps intented)

Secondly on the Florida game, I watched the Potvin feed, why I don't know as bad as I hate Potvin. Guess I'm a masochist. But you are spot on about the crowd being dead in there. I think at one time I heard them say how "electric" the crowd was yesterday. I could be mistaken because I was kind of in a fog yesterday after taking some cold meds. Then I also heard them say there were over 18000 in attendance there yesterday. Once again they must have been dressed as seats, because I saw a ton of empty seats. The only way there were 18000+ in that building is if it holds 100,000. That being said I hope the Pampers do make the Playoffs only because that means the Rangers and sideshow boob avery don't.

Yeah that was a clean hit too. Those types of fights are some that the GMs are looking to curtail. I mean if you can't take a clean hit, get off the ice. I absolutely hate when players will go and start a fight after one of their teammates gets a hard clean hit. Now if its Avery doing the hitting I think he's fair game just because he's gotten away with so many dirty hits he's owed some retribution.

People think this is new, but it isnt. You couldnt even look at Gretzky without Semenko gunning for you. It's been in the game for a long long time. As for why Crosby was the one to jump in? I say good for him, but if i were his coach i'd strangle him. Fedotenko broke his hand in a one punch fight earlier this year, and was out for quite a while. they dont need that happening to crosby.

Yup. The Stillman factor is one thing, but certainly having Avery and TORTS at home would suit me just fine, too.

Though we probably need the Rangers to sweep their home-and-home with Philly to end the season to help us towards the 4 seed, as Philly otherwise has the Panthers (tomorrow) and the Isle (sandwiched between their Rangers games). The scenario is there (we win out, Philly loses to the Panthers and the Isle, splits with the Rangers, the Rangers lose to Montreal, and the Panthers win out) for all of it to happen but that gets pretty complex, considering how tight things are with 3 games (4 for Montreal and Philly) to go.

Blue Jackets just clinched their first playoff spot in franchise history by beating Chicago tonight. Good for their fans. :)

That was an awesome game in Chicago and YES, excellent for the Jackets and their fans. The Arena District should be hoppin' in CLB. A little bittersweet with Mr. McConnell, the owner, passing away last summer-

Very disappointed my other guys in the West, the 'Hawks couldn't seal that 4 spot in the west- But I'm really happy for CLB and their fans, and for Rick Nash, who made a fantastic play to score that game tying goal (after missing on a Penalty Shot earlier) That'll be the biggest goal Nash has scored to date in his young career. The franchise player, the Captain scores a goal like that- the goal of the Franchise as Hitchcock said in the post game media scrum---- the Jackets are on the rise- they can do some damage in the post season.

These waning days of the reg season are great- you see all the stuff that is just about to happen around the corner in the PLAYOFFS.

My team is back in it, which of course makes it completely exciting, but on top of that, there are all kinds of great stories just ready to be written.

A little OT but, not really....we have CI on TWC and they cut off the feeds IMMEDIATELY after the game becomes final...no post-game, ever. I know DirecTV didn't do that when we had it a few years ago....does Dish? We're gonna switch this off-season (I hope) and that's an annoyance I hope to see end.

Somebody was *****ing about that to Gary Bettman on Thursday's call in show. He said it had to do with TV rights, distribution contracts, bandwidth, etc. I call bullsh*t if it's not that way for non-TWC/cable subscribers.

I would have loved to have heard some of the STL post-game.

Yep, heard that and thought the same thing (and that same thought about STL is what made me remember the ask the question). We got pre-game, post-game, tons of stuff. I remember watching some late-night type post-game stuff of some Western Conf teams (Sharks? Kings? maybe both). Waaaay after the game ended they'd bring a player out and sit there in stools with the fans gathered around behind them and chat. None of that with TWC.

SHC we have Dish and some nights it does sign off immediately, sometimes it leaves the post-game on. My sister watched the game last night and said they showed all of the jerseys off the back hoopla. (And with the final score, she was wearing a helmet when I got home.)

I would say most of the time, John and Tripp stay on.

Mona, are you (or your sister) watching FSN through normal Dish service or through the Center Ice subscription? On normal TWC we get the FSN post-game too. It's the other broadcasts through the Center Ice package where the feeds end when the game ends.

Thanks!

I heard that answer by Bettman on his show the other day, and I'm confused for TWC subscribers- because I can tell you, on DirecTV, we get the pre/post game stuff, and on some of the channels, (The Wild, Kings, STL and Comcast broadcasts for WSH, SJ and CHI, NESN for the B's) you can start watching whatever comes on after the hockey game is over- and they don't cut off until Midnight or sometimes well after that. The only time we have anything "cut" off is a Canadian feed- say Rogers Sportsnet-Ontario is broadcasting a Leafs or Sens game- We will get the post game interviews, and the coaches post game conference, and then they go to the commercial for the Sportsnet highlight show, and that is when they cut us off. Oh, and SHC- it's the Sharks that do the post-game interviews on stools with fans behind them, mostly weekend games- the 'Hawks do similar on Comcast, their postgames are on the concourse with all the fans going kookoo, lol.

TSN the same thing, interviews with players, then the lead up to Sportscentre, and when the Sportscentre music comes on, poof, the ol' DirecTV logo and one of the XM music channels playing music comes on. Used to be (pre lockout) everything got cut off right after the game ended. Now, you can roll on and on. Which for us, is kind of a duplicate since we subscribe to the regional networks, and can watch the pre and post stuff on those channels- but I'm not complaining.

My question w/Time Warner is what the frick is the hurry? Especially if there is a post game thing going on? That's still part of the broadcast, IMO.

Oh and back on topic- BRAVO to STL. Talk about gutsy, gritty performances? The Blues literally clawed their way into the playoffs. They deserved to get in- and while I always root for the little engine that could in NSH I think they need to figure some things out and re-tool for next year. The Wild and the Stars just frankly don't deserve to be there. Too much nonsense with both teams, and this is the result.

SoCal, clarify this for me. Are you getting the pre- and post-game shows on your Center Ice subscription channels, or on the regional satellite broadcasts through DirectTV? Because if you're getting them on the Center Ice subscription, that's definitely not something we get with TWC CI.

I don't think it's a "whats the hurry" thing with TWC, as there's nothing on the broadcast afterwards but dead space. They must not have the rights to the post-game content, and it may be a disparity between contracts for cable providers versus satellite. The caller last week was actually in the Comcast cable market, not TWC, but it sounded like the same issue.

And I was bummed too that Nashville didn't make it. The Preds always seem to turn it up a notch in the playoffs, and I'd like to see their fanbase continue to reap some rewards for supporting their market.

Florida, on the other hand....

04-11-2009, 10:54 AM
I could be wrong (since this is just a guess) but I think the reason DirecTV can stick with the post game show is because they have the rights to broadcast those channels after the center ice game window ends because they carry those channels on their own. Whereas TWC doesn't have the rights to those channels.

SouthernHockeyChick
04-11-2009, 10:59 AM
^I'd say you're probably right. But I do get some of the regional channels on TWC too, and I don't get those post-games on CI like I did on DTV.

SoCal, clarify this for me. Are you getting the pre- and post-game shows on your Center Ice subscription channels, or on the regional satellite broadcasts through DirectTV?

We definitely got them on the CI channels when we had DirecTV.

So back to my original question....can someone with Dish tell us whether they get the pre/post game or not?

Yes- we get the pre and post game on the CI subscription w/DirectTV.

The pre-game situation is a little up and down- (some we get religiously- like Comcast - SJ, CHI and WSH- others can be hit and miss and we attribute it to lack of attention to detail, lol) and we get everybody's post game however long they are and like I said earlier, we'll get whatever's after the post game (i.e. the nightly highlight show on FSN, NESN, MSG etc). Thus the duplicate thing I mentioned since we subscribe to all those channels on the regional sports pak.

I'm not a CI subscriber, but I'm on Dish. My only experience is with Canes games on Fox Sports, but they're on-the-air for an after-show-- can run anywhere from 10 to 20 minutes or so--occassionally longer. Sometimes they show some of the Coach at the presser afterword at the tail end.

Does that help?

SouthernHockeyChick
04-11-2009, 01:32 PM
Thanks, but no.

Just to be perfectly clear, my question is about CENTER ICE broadcasts only. I get the post-game on the Canes' Fox Sports broadcasts. None of my question (or, I think, this discussion) is referring to Fox Sports Canes broadcasts (hence it's location in the Other NHL forum).

I want to watch NESN pre and post-game, I want to watch MSG pre and post-game, I want to watch Altitude and Comcast pre and post-games.
I could do that with Center Ice on DirecTV.
I cannot do it with Center Ice on TWC.
What I want to know is if I can do that with Center Ice on Dish.

You mean on NHL Network on Saturday nights right? Not too many double headers during the week, If I'm recalling correctly -- it's great that they have the agreement with CBC and NHLN/NHL to broadcast the CBC doubleheader. I always loved watching "After Hours" when they were just broadcasting HNIC games on CI (via DirecTV) before this agreement, and I love being able to watch the whole thing now (sometimes they got trigger happy on DTV and they'd cut it off midway through, lol) I wish this was even across the board, so more people on all systems/providers get the same access to the games - especially as paid subscribers, but I guess it's all about the rights holders and access.

Well, this Montreal/Pittsburgh game has been freakin' awesome, up until a few seconds ago when the Pens blew it just about wide open. Looks like we'll have the Devils. I might have some confidence that the Habs could come back (8min left) if it didn't look to me like Price was still beating himself up about the other 2 goals.

I was just comin' in to post that SHC.

If I'm a Panthers Fan or even a Slug fan, I'm kicking myself for falling off down the stretch. The Habs, stink to high heaven. They've lost (when this is final) 4 in a row, they are hobbling into the playoffs, and I personally hope the B's knock them off their storied high horses. They are not a good team right now, and the Panthers and all the others should kick themselves hard for not knocking them out of it.

2 SH goals in 55 seconds is horrid. Kudos to the Pens, and yeah, we get the Devils for the umpteenth time. I personally don't have a preference for who we play, I'm confident we can handle whoever it is, I was just kinda hoping it'd be anyone but Marty's team, cause it'd be nice to play someone else.

LTD- it's on NHL Network/HNIC first of the double header.

Oh, and is it me or is Bob Cole watching the same game we are? He is just babbling away at how 'gritty' MTL has played, and frankly, I'm not seeing it. No wonder they gave the gig to Jim Hughson. He's in la-la land.

Heehee LTD, I think hub's nephews will be just as stressed as they were last season- Here's a funny story- after we clinched our playoff spot and than game last Sat vs the Pens, hub's oldest nephew sent a text to him, which is their tradition after every game played by the Pens or Canes- and especially after a game when they play each other. Anyway, he confesses that he had a 'dream' that the Canes and Pens meet up in the east finals, which would be hub's worst nightmare, but it wouldn't really matter, cause he'd be rooting for the Canes. No question. Well fast forward to a couple days ago, after we beat the NYI, and one of the nephew's coworkers is listening to a local radio station in the office they share- and they have some talking heads on talking matchups- kind of like a panel- and 3 of the 5 guys say "it's a PIT/CAR East Final"

So the now freaked out nephew leaves a voicemail messages at the house, a text on both cell phones, and sent hub and email, saying he's now getting nervous that both teams will meet up and he's going to stop listening to all this media stuff. Personally if we're talking about a Pens/Canes ECF, I'm just fine with it. That means we've done some damage, heehee.

BUT, first things first....... :-

OH, and is anyone watcing PHX/ANA? Crazzzzy stuff. The Ducks were losing 4-2 now it's 4-4 in OT.

Rangers and Caps should be a blood bath. Two physical teams.

I really don't pay much attention to the bottom half of the West but looking at the standings in the paper this morning, I am amazed that the Avs finished in the basement and had so few points.

Did anyone watch the Leafs/Sens game yesterday? (I don't know why anyone would...;)) I had On The Fly on muted this morning while I was doing something else...it looked like two goals were scored on Gerbs as a result of his bad playing of the puck. I was thinking the final score was just 5-2 so I went and looked and yeah, he only allowed two goals, both in the second. Were they both really from his turnovers behind the net?

That should be a nice illustration of what it really looks like when a goalie screws up playing the puck for the morons (in residence elsewhere) who want to blame Leighton for those two bad bounces.

But poor Gerbs....glad they won anyway.

And again Avery gets a few punches in on a guy the linesman is holding (Hartnell). Nice.

You bet your ass any guy would do the same thing as Avery in that case. He got run from behind at the end of the game, and got slugged by Hartnell when Avery wasnt in the altercation that fell out. Then instead of turtling, he punched the guy. This wasnt the same as the Ladd situation, both guys were equally (not very) restrained, and no significant time passed before dishing out the parting punch.

i ahte to defend the **** sucker, but i dont know that any one would sit there and take that BS.

My problem is not with Avery (which should have been clear) but with the linesman. Either HOLD THE GUYS or let them the **** go. If it takes two of you, ask for help. If I'm not mistaken there are four of them out there. And nothing else was going one at the time.

thats fair. tough spot to be in though. these guys are huge. he did a pretty good job considering it was just him. The other linesman was trying to get the other two split up.

the refs dont have to get involved, but in situations like that... IMO they should. some of the better referees will, in the interests of safety and keeping control; others, like Van Massenhoven will just watch the entire thing go.

Pisani's 14 goals in 24 playoff games in 2006... he's never beaten a "1 goal every 2 games" pace at any stage of his adult career (NCAA, AHL, Swiss, Italy, NHL). He was more money in the NHL playoffs than he was in the AHL.
