Cool pix Nick- reminds me of when the Canes were down at Glenwood South with the Cup in 06 and I remember my phone going nuts from people I knew who were down there and the Cup "arrived",. The J Staal pics are funny, he's got the baby bird mouth thing too.
Apparently on that Pens South Side crawl, they ate hot "Wings" out of the Cup. Oh my.

I'm going to preface this post by saying that if Caniac deems this to be unsuitable for discussion, my apologies and I understand that he may remove since its last mention brought some deletions and a thread lock.
AND, I'll also ask that anyone that wants to participate in the discussion stick to criticizing the players (literally) involved and not posters. Thanks.
So, after reading what SoCal posted about the handshake faux pas, I saw this photo on-line.
http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/media/ALeqM5h3uCeuIP_GN0_jNu_EJz_K1vXrPA?size=l
Um. That's looks pretty clear that they were waiting for a few more players to get in line, right?
So a couple of thoughts (of mine).
I can only presume that NO media was offered a chance to do on ice interviews BEFORE the handshake line concluded. If they did, the NHL should be ashamed, but I'm presuming that was not the case.
So, we are left with Sid (and whoever else) hugging and celebrating. Given that Lidstrom et al had already gone thru the bulk of the Pens line, why didn't SOMEONE get Crosby et al over to the line?
I'm willing to cut Sid and the stragglers a break since they are young, euphoric, and never been there before. Hell, maybe Crobsy was even under some influence given his knee issue . It happened.
BUT, the head scratcher for me is that Crosby wants to justify his oversight by saying it was just something that happened and he doesn't need to apologize. THAT's where I have the issue. Hell yes, you must apologize. You snubbed (even if not intentional) the team Captain of your opponent on his home ice. Nic Lidstrom. That's deserves acknowledgement and apology imo. (from what I understand, some of the swells of booing from the JLA crowd came at the time of this photo....while the Wings waited fruitlessly)
So, while this WHOLE post season, I found a hatred for Malkin and a tolerance for Crosby....and it's all shot to hell in one sound bite.
"I really don't need to talk to anyone from Detroit about it," Crosby said yesterday. "I made the attempt to go shake hands. I've been on that side of things, too, I know it's not easy, waiting around. I just won the Stanley Cup, and I think I have the right to celebrate with my teammates.
Sid, you won the Cup. You can be gracious and admit that a mistake was made. It was.
People talk about the tradition of the NHL doing post-series handshakes and how unique, etc. Well, if it's optional for a "right to celebrate with my teammates", then you've just shot that thinking to hell Sid.

i think the discussion is fine, E, so long as everything remains civil. sometimes things need a fresh start, and end up being pretty interesting...
Any posts that are one liner "crosby is a classless f*ck", or "crosby is the winz," will be deleted, as it really isnt contributory--and thats the stuff that started the whole getting out of hand last go round.
---------
E, i agree. I get his point about just winning and all that, but the Stanley Cup is bigger than him, the handshake line is bigger than him. If he doesnt realize that at his age, he needs to wake the **** up. you've got all summer to get drunk and be with the Cup.

I presume that he was annoyed that it was Draper that called him out (Draper should have known the media would have anyway) and that's why he took the stance he did.
But a simple "I got caught up .... didn't realize .... and I'm sorry I missed the chance to shake Lidstrom's hand after that 7 game series....." and it woulda died a quick death.

Ok - I'm a glutton for punishment, but I'm watching the live stream from Pittsburgh and it's hysterical because apparently there was some sort of media issue approaching the cars during the Steelers parade so they keep saying that they've been threatened with arrest if they leave the barrier to approach the cars. But as they call over the staff (they haven't gotten to the players cars yet) whoever it is that actually stops and gets out and walks over is inundated with all sorts of media and they are all shouting over each other to ask questions.
Awww and JStaal is the first player to actually come over to speak. And he pokes Eric by pointing out that he was younger than Eric when he won so he's "one up" on him.
And the Cop is getting pissed because the TV guy joked about Max Talbot "crowd surfing" during his interview and he actually tried to.
the official count of players that left the cars to talk to the media people....JStaal, Max Talbot, and Craig Adams. Good on ya guys!
edit: and I never want to hear our local media criticized because these yahoos are all the same (studio people particularly) throwing out pretty lame explanations to fill time. But I loved how they just said that the fans are so great they filled the arena even in the down years.

That pic is damaging evidence- and I was really not at all impressed by Mr. Man Crosby and his flippant attitude about the snub.
LOL'd at J Staal getting one up on big brother..... nice shades too.
I have been in text pic nuttiness with the nephews and family up in PIT. They were out on the route at about 5:30am, and I get a text on my way to the gym from oldest nephew, "we're here" LOL. They were camped out in what they found out was the "staging" area for all the players for the parade. They got to see everything-- players lining up and so on. Our oldest nephew said in one of his final texts without pictures- "Aunt Socal, now we know why you guys were on another planet the days and months after- it's crazy out here" I was so sour after the Pens won on FRI, but now with the nieces and nephews just going bananas up there, and all of them saying "this is exactly how things were for you guys when the Canes won" I'm just happy for them, that their team won, and they get to experience the same delerium that their uncle and aunt did. estimates are 250K,
But they're killin me with the text pics! When one sees a player, he/she takes a pic and hits send, and they all do it.
Oh and they just killed it for me they're talking about the Steelers and how the Steelers and the Pens have a chance to "do it again next year" OK dudes, cool it.
OMG, Malkin' parents, the local celebs. This streaming video reminds me of Mark Roberts and that crazy ass WRAL parade coverage.

I'm sorry, Mr Crosby, but that is not a very Captain-like way to handle this situation. I was willing to give you a pass when I heard about it but, after seeing those comments, I have to agree. That is not cool.
And can I just say, since some folks laid into the Detroit crowd for booing, they were playing the 2008 SCF Game 6 on XM on my way to work today. Sorry to disappoint, but the Pittsburgh crowd booed just as much last year. Clement and whoever the play by play guy (Sam Rosen?) was were commenting on it. Not just a crappy Wings fan attribute, I'm afraid.
(BTW, did everyone hear about Lidstrom today? He played since the...I think it was second round....with surgically repaired testicles? Doh! And Gonchar had a partially torn MCL from that Ovechkin hit in round 2.)

OMG SHC, I saw that and flipped out. It's just insane.
I honestly can't see anyone seeing the Cup getting awarded on their home ice jumping up and down and being happy and cheering. I think it's just a natural reaction to boo- you're a fan of the home team, they lost. Of course I would hope -(if it ever happened to us, and gosh no I'm not hoping for that) I would be able to contain myself. But after seeing the POW trophy get awarded to the Pens on our ice, that was enough of that ever in my life; I was proud of myself that I didn't go nuts and boo, but if it was the Cup? I have no earthly idea how I'd do.

I didn't watch the whole celebration or handshake line, just couldn't do it. I was not ready to see Crosby, Malkin, Orpik, etc lift the cup. After reading about the Crosby situation, I called my bro to see if he watched. He said he couldn't watch the celebrations either, but this just proves his point that Crosby is an a$$.
For being the face of the NHL, he sure screwed the pooch on this one. I don't care if your name is Crosby and you just won the cup. You don't snub your opponent. To me, Crosby still has alot of growing up to do.
I will say, I'm damn glad we didn't have to witness the Oilers winning it on our ice. I actually felt a tad sorry for those Detroit fans.

Half of us may sympathize with that one, but despite best efforts, honestly can't imagine. The other half (me included) are crouched in pain because they can imagine.
Concerning Crosby, unbelievable. The handshake line is one of the classiest traditions in sports, and not only did he snub Lidstrom and half the Wings team, he snubbed the tradition itself with his comments. Super Mario needs to have a serious talk with the kid, if he hasn't already.

Hm... on the Crosby front, Hossa's perspective:
http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story?id=4264277
One member of the Detroit Red Wings doesn't think Sidney Crosby was out of line when he was late to get to the handshake line after the Pittsburgh Penguins won the Stanley Cup.
"After the game, when I start shaking their hands, I did not think, 'Who is there and who is not there?'" Marian Hossa said, according to the Calgary Herald. "After, I think about it and I thought that I did not remember shaking hands with Sid. I'm sure he was caught in the emotion and did not know where he was. I know him. He wouldn't do it deliberately. He is a great guy. I think he was just excited and caught up in the emotion."

Coming from the guy who hasnt won a Stanley Cup.
Lidstrom and Zetterberg have won the Cup before, and have taken time out of their celebration and made sure to shake hands as a nod to the guys they just beat. I think their opinion matters a little bit more.

Well since I kinda started the situation that got the last thread locked I want so apologize for my not so pc correct statement about Cindy. Classless might have been a bit much....however....after reading his statements concerning the handshake line....he is just wrong. Pronger could do it...Draper could do it...it is tradition. Granted he is young but as long as he has been playing the game he should have known better. So maybe classless was a little much....I will amend that to just plain stupid.

Looks like, same as Kaberle in 2006, Talbot scored the Cup winning goal while in need of some serious surgical repair.
PITTSBURGH -- Pittsburgh Penguins forward Maxime Talbot underwent surgery to repair the torn labrum in his left shoulder Tuesday, and his recovery is expected to take four to five months.
The 25-year-old, who scored both goals in Pittsburgh's 2-1 victory over Detroit in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup final, had played through the injury "for quite a while" according to GM Ray Shero.
"We all agreed it was best for him to have the surgery at this time," Shero said in a release. "Although he will miss training camp and the start of the season, the doctors expect him to make a complete recovery."
Talbot has appeared in 261 career games in the NHL, collecting 42 goals and 80 points.

I've been meaning to check out whether or not JStaal had had his day with the Cup, and he has: http://www.hhof.com/html/exSCJ09_09.shtml
This cracked me up:
The family was getting ready for the Stanley Cup party, and over at one side, Eric and his wife Tanya were filling balloons with helium. "He knocks me out of the Eastern Finals and here I am blowing up balloons for him," laughed Eric.

Thanks for posting E- I did start checking in pretty regularly, but got irked when I saw Orpik listed for his upcoming day with the Cup and got sidetracked and didn't check in--- LOVED the tale of the Cup. So much detail compared to others  but I suspect that's the whole Staal cachet.
Hilarious about the balloons, but I'm surprised that LTD hasn't chimed in on this little tid-bit:
After finishing the public celebration at the Gardens, Jordan and his guests stopped at The Hoito for lunch. Thunder Bay has a large Finnish population, and The Hoito is a Finnish restaurant located on the ground floor of the historic Finnish Labour Temple. "The Hoito has the best pancakes you'll ever eat," Jordan boasted, and you know something? He was right!
Wonder when Eric will invite his Finnish teammates up for some pancakes. Fascinating tidbit though.
I was just flat out 'surprised' on this one:
"Feel like an ice cream sundae?" asked Jordan. He took the Stanley Cup to Merla-Mae Ice Cream. While three young ladies were dishing up treats at the front, Jordan arrived at the backdoor with the Cup, entering with intent on making a great sundae in the bowl of the Cup. "I don't think our boss would like this," sputtered one of the girls, not understanding the magnitude of the Cup. "You're not really supposed to be doing that!" Jordan replied, "I don't think he will mind when you tell him," and proceeded to make a delicious sundae in the Stanley Cup. On the way out, Jordan left the ladies a nice tip.
Really? I could see that happening somewhere 'non-traditional' (for lack of a better word) but in the heart of Staal country? I read it twice, just to make sure I wasn't imagining what I read.
For as much as I'm bitter about the eventual winner of the Cup, it's always (almost) great to read that Stanley Cup journal. Brings back good memories, and makes me wanna read another summer of Canes with Stanley real soon. ;)

I think cmw and I may be wondering the same thing -- it's not a matter of who OK'd it but simply that it's FLOATING. The story I've always heard/read about it being in Mario's pool (in the '90s) was that it ended up "at the bottom of the pool." In the pics above, the Cup is doing a magnificent job of floating. So if it floats, how did it end up at the bottom of the pool? Of course, as I was not there in the '90s (or this year, for that matter), it's not like I got the story first-hand so it's possible the word got changed through retelling, which changed the semantics a bit. Or maybe the Cup takes on water over time and started out floating and ended up sinking, which it had not yet done in the pictures above. I dunno.

they may have sealed the inner shell better after that incident. also you may have noticed last year, that the base was updated with the new (as of years and years ago) HHOF logo, thats a pretty good chance to make sure it gets sealed and floats.

In our household, this is just salt in the wound stuff, especially with our ownership of 2 of the family's 6 season tickets; plus hearing Chad say in one of the off season interviews how the Pens winning left a bad taste because we didn't have all guns firing, etc.
Anyway, we've been getting lots of texts and emails from the kids ( nieces and nephews, now grown) up in PA who have essentially inherited the family seats to tell us our tickets have arrived (Friday). Oldest nephew sent a us a text and then forwarded a Tweet for us to tune into FSN-PIT to see this story: Pens players are delivering tickets again, and #87 returned to the house of the older lady he delivered tix to a couple seasons ago- she's been a STHer since the beginning, and when he first delivered tickets to her, she gave a predicition that the "Pens weren't ready for the Cup, give it another year" sure enough they didn't win it, but went back this year, and you know the rest. The video of the whole return to her house is pretty great, even if you're not a Pens fan, because she's clearly overjoyed and as fans we all get that aspect. Personally, if Eric Staal showed up in my house with this "gift" I would have to be taken to WakeMed or something. ;)

So the Pens made it to the White House today. This article (http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburghtrib/news/breaking/s_642592.html) in the PIT paper kinda rankles- the writer implies the jersey that they gave the President with "44" (GAG) is for our President who is the 44th POTUS and not for The Neck Breaker:
after a brief, early-evening ceremony during which Obama posed with the Cup and received a black Penguins sweater containing his surname, defenseman Brooks Orpik's No. 44 and captain Sidney Crosby's "C" --
This also bothered me; I know he is not American, but I don't recall any o of our guys doing anything like this, or any other players from other Championship teams doing this:
Standing third from the left in the back row on a riser in the East Room of the White House, Malkin snapped pictures with and texted from his cell phone as Obama welcomed the Stanley Cup champion Penguins.
-snip-
Malkin spent much of the ceremony either engaged with cell-phone shenanigans or waiving to familiar faces among the crowd.
Call me old-fashioned, but it's just not very respectful.

That was the crux of my full on diatribe last night with Mr. Socal who kept telling me to "let it go".;) I know we're becoming or have become a dumbed down society, but come the hell on. But what caught my ire most was this idiot correlated The Neck Breaker wearing # 44, and presenting it to the POTUS. My gosh you have to be friggin kidding me.
I'm surprised the Pens and WH staff didn't get pointers in regard to dos and don'ts. Probably a Russian thing, remember AO's flippant comments about inaguaration day.
I distinctly recall Sundheim blogging about some "last minute White House pointers" he received from W's staff, and how he was going to distribute the info, when the Canes went to meet him. I am pretty sure everyone who goes for a meeting with the POTUS, gets debriefed. What bothered me, was the teammates, as documented in the article were gasping and chuckling, as if to condone it. I get he's a foreigner, and "Geno" likely doesn't mean any harm, but if the team was goin' to the Kremlin, and #87 started clicking pics and not even focused on what was going on, I think personally he might not get out of Russia. For me, this is so NOT cute.
