View Full Version : Hypothetical hope: Should/could we nab Cujo from waivers?

Finishing 30th last season means: "they have first priority on any player put on waivers, including the waiver draft".
Now Detroit can only secure 2 NHL goalies from waivers. With Detroit not wanting Colorado to get Cujo, Cujo being injured, with not many other teams interested in Cujo's money and detroit not wanting Cujo, if detroit doesn't get rid of him soon they will basically be forced to put him to waivers befor the waiver draft unless they want to lose legace or Hasek to waivers which we all know they don't want.
So that means that we would have first dibs on him before any other team if he went to waivers. Now that would leave several interesting scenairios for us. We could keep him and dump Weekes, Irbe, maybe Ward or Wallin (which I'd think might happen either way). that would free up some money meaning we'd only have to shell out alittle more to pay Cujo to play. I'd love that to happen.
OR we could trade him to the likes of colorado. Tanguay for Cujo sounds fair to me. The thought of Tanguay-Francis-O'Neil should make any Caniac drool.
But all this is just wishful thinking at the moment. Although it could become reality. I would think that Detroit would have shipped him off by now if they could have.

Oh yeah and not to mention the little thing that people all over the NHL talk about between Karmanos and Illitch.

CuJo is ancient...and not worth the money.
This would only work if we could get rid of Irbe's salary without having to pay a chunk of it, and if we could trade CuJo somewhere. That is not an automatic bet with an old, injured goalie.
It's a nice idea...but not very plausible unless we could rid ourselves of Irbe's salary and have an assured trade lined up.
But if we could do that.... jackpot!

Thanks, but I'd actually like for the 'Canes to get somewhere in the playoffs.

I didn't even think about keeping him...
That wouldn't be in the best interests of the team...CuJo is old...if we dump Weekes for him we'll be up the creek without a paddle. Personally, I think CuJo is overrated. He's 3rd best on his own team...no way he can compare with Weekes when he's on his game...
And he's ancient.

If us having Tanguay was the desired result, we'd have better (not to mention cheaper) luck going straight to the source... I wouldn't want a goalie that cost that much unless his name was Brodeur or Turco.
Tanguay deal remains on ice
Winger only player unsigned
By Adrian Dater, Denver Post Sports Writer
Avalanche left wing Alex Tanguay recently fired one of the most influential agents in the NHL in favor of Bob Sauve, the agent for former Avs goalie Patrick Roy.
Sauve is a former business partner of Avalanche president and general manager Pierre Lacroix, and Sauve's son, Phil, is expected to be a goalie on the team this season.
Tanguay is the only unsigned Avalanche player. Training camp begins Sept. 13.
"It's too early to tell right now if things are looking (optimistic) or not," Sauve said Monday. "We've had a few discussions, and we'll probably talk again in the next week or two."
At the end of last season, Tanguay dismissed Toronto-based agent Don Meehan, and Sauve became his third agent since he joined the NHL in 1999.
Meehan's Newport Sports agency handles more than 100 NHL players, including Jarome Iginla, Jose Theodore, Curtis Joseph and Nicklas Lidstrom. In addition to Roy, Sauve handles NHL stars Jean-Sebastien Giguere and Vincent Lecavalier.
Sauve said his history with La- croix, and his son being on the team, is no guarantee of a quick resolution of Tanguay's contract negotiations.
"People in the game know that about us, that there's business first in these kinds of things," Sauve said.
Tanguay signed a one-year, $900,000 contract before last season and had the second-best scoring year of his career. In 82 games, he had 26 goals and 67 points and was a plus-34 playing on a line with Peter Forsberg and Milan Hejduk.
History suggests if Tanguay wants to remain in Colorado, he will sign with the Avs before the start of training camp. All players who have held out past the start of camp have been traded or let go as free agents within two years, including Martin Rucinsky, Scott Young, Wendel Clark, Chris Simon, Valeri Kamensky, Sandis Ozolinsh and Chris Drury.
If and when Tanguay signs with the Avs, he will wear a new uniform number. Tanguay has traded in his No. 40 for No. 18, the number he wore as a junior player. Previously, Adam Deadmarsh and Drury had worn the number, and Tanguay couldn't wear it last season because Drury was traded after the July 15 cutoff date the NHL imposes on players who want to change numbers.
