I imagine the team on the ice wil be a lot closer to the actual regular season line-ups, as compared to what Mo used on Monday night.
Would be nice to see win.... :)

I really don't have anything to add, except it's fun to be the first one to reply in the game thread - wooo hooo!
If we keep losing when I do this I'll quit before the regular season.
ETA: Just to show I can make a contribution, this is probably more geared to the training camp thread, but I'll post it here since we'll surely see him in the lineup tomorrow night, Chip wrote a nice article about Brandon in today's N&O.

On the food front, they now have made to order funnel cakes and let me just say, they are awesome. So yeah, you know what I'll be hitting up 1st intermission

Did anybody else notice at the last home game-- were there any scalpers/re-sellers out-and-about?
I wonder how much I'd have to pay for a ticket if I waited until 7:05 or so?????

We bought 2 from a scalper last game, but it was way early - about 6:30. There didn't seem to be a ton of them out and about, but we didn't have any trouble finding a ticket. We paid $35 for LLN tickets and as we walked away realized the face value was $0, so someone had some freebies they sold to the scalper (he had a whole row of them). We probably coulda gotten them for less, but thought $35 wasn't bad for LL....until we actually froze and were bored to death by the game.

I remember that from last year. Some kind people "gave" us their tickets because they decided not to stay, but I guess they were scanned or something because they didn't work with the scanners. So we went ahead about bought the 9.99 seats. Then my son was smart enough to realize that the seats connected to the free seats would be empty (East Snooterville) and we still had the tickets so we ended up sitting in those seats.

As close as we have so far as to tomorrow's (oops, today's) lineup:
TTS: Canes Plan Full Lineup for Friday (http://hurricanes.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=499689)
New dad Eric Staal was back at practice today with a little extra bounce in his step.
“It was an incredible experience and tough to describe,” he said. “I’m just happy and excited that both mom and Parker are healthy and doing good.”
The Canes’ center missed Wednesday’s skate following the birth his first child, son Parker Lucas, one day earlier. He took his usual spot centering Ray Whitney and Erik Cole, with Brandon Sutter moved back to the “hopefuls” line with Zach Boychuk and Patrick Dwyer.
After practice, Staal fielded the expected quips from reporters regarding his hockey-rich bloodlines, specifically about what position his son would end up playing. Even though three forwards and one defenseman have already been drafted from the Staal family by NHL teams, Eric doubted that a new dimension would be added to the clan.
“He’ll be smart enough to stay away from the goalie gear,” he said, without any hesitation whatsoever.
Staal is expected to play on Friday night, when Paul Maurice plans on dressing the best team available to face Atlanta at home. That should include Jussi Jokinen, who seems to be back at full speed following a finger injury, but will not include Joni Pitkanen, who likely won’t be back at practice until next week.
Maurice didn’t say if Sutter would be included on Friday, although that seems somewhat doubtful given that the team’s clear intention of fielding what they believe will be the eventual NHL roster. To sit a veteran and play Sutter would be making quite a statement, although it is possible considering how highly the coaching staff and management thinks of the 20-year-old’s camp thus far.
Regardless of what happens Friday, Sutter should make the trip to Nashville the following day as the Canes intend to rest some of their regulars for the exhibition finale.

I'll post a Camp/Practice update on the main page shortly but since it's a game day, I'll post some stuff here; some quick hits for this game day- My Ditz (Joni) is back on the ice, he looked really good especially during the skating drills. I know he'll need to get game timing and all that together- however, he really looked good. Tom Rowe didn't get his hands on him yet for death skates, but I imagine since #25 is such an excellent skater, that won't be an issue.
Today was a true morning skate- It felt less like training camp and more like we're about to get going with a new season. Very efficient, very precise, RF ran a few of the skating drills, and the pace, which has been fast since Camp Brind 'Amour started, is even faster.
If ya'll don't get the LGC tweets or Chip's tweets, it's Sutter, Boychuk and Dwyer on the forward lines who are scratched along with McBain and Conboy. I'll say it's a little odd as I thought they were talking about getting one more game with the "kids" in.
Some interesting (likely to me only, lol) things in today's skate- #6 stayed out wayyy past his norm to practice tip ins with Ruutu. Neat to see teammate bond between those two develop seemingly in the last couple weeks- and another interesting thing that blew me away- Seeing #25 do the d-man shootaround (my term) that the D work on with Rowe after each skate, typically, Joni will participate, but often, he'll find his way over to #15 and #36 and the forward corps. Joni is a heck of a shooter and he impressed his mates on the D with his precision shots into the empty cage. He stayed with them the entire time instead of his usual roving over to his Finnish mates. I think he's finding his way to comfort with his teammates which is good to see.
#12 caused a post morning skate stir with all the fans in the stands when he made an appearance to try out some new sticks. (sans helmet and jersey) The healthy extras were still out with KMcCarthy and wrapping it up, while Eric was shooting on the other net, McCarthy asked #12 if he didn't mind if the youngsters did their little shoot the puck to the other end thing, while he was shooting on net and it was neat, he played cheerleader when Sutter, Dwyer and Boychuk made their cross the ice shots to the net. "Yeah!!" when they scored on the empty net, and when Conboy hit one, a stick tap to the ice. Then it was back to him testing the stick.
Everyone had that game day look about them, so let's see how that translates tonight.

^^ To echo SoCal's comments, I thought Joni looked really good out there today for it being his first time back skating with the team. He's such a fluid skater anyway, but he didn't look like he was laboring at all with stride or speed. And he was pretty smily so he must be in good spirits. Fingers crossed his recovery continues as planned.
Disappointed that Zach isn't hanging around for tomorrow night's game since word was that some of the vets would rest.
This may have been posted already and no new news but here are the projected lineups for tonight.

Cullen-Jokinen-Ruutu
Brind'Amour-LaRose-Samsonov
Yelle-Kostopoulos-Walker

For those who aren't able to listen to the post-game, couple of comments from the coach. Ray took a puck to the face (at least that's what I presume, I saw him leave but didn't see the shot that hit him, and he didn't come out for the second star), anyhow Maurice said he thought it hit him flat and he should be okay. Kostopoulos was cleared to return but they kept him out for precautionary reasons and he may be kept out of the lineup tomorrow night as well although he was begging to go back in.

Well, that was a win (finally) but it was pretty sloppy at times. I'm like the coach....I liked pieces of that game. Thank god for Cam Ward.
I really thought we were dropping like flies for a while there. Kostopoulos went off, of course, Cole went off for a couple minutes, Wallin did as well, A Ward was fiddling with his foot all night, then Whit when down. Sheesh!
At one point in the game, after a series of nice Ward saves and one REALLY nice one, they put the 'Kiss Cam' on the JT (or whatever it is now). It's the first time I've seen that and thought to myself how much I'd really like to right at that moment!!
I've been in the this will be a comeback year for Brindy camp but, I don't know. So far, I'm still seeing the same old bad decisions with the puck that I saw last year. :(
Decent crowd tonight (11,465), for pre-season, too.

Fandragon & I got to ride the zambonis during the 1st intermission! :toocool:
Our names, however, are not David & Susan, which was what Brian Hoyle announced us as. Idiot.
We were picked totally at random! We walking down the concourse, when this guy walked up & asked us if we wanted to do it. Met him at the 10:00 mark in the 1st & got to watch the rest of the period from behind the glass where the zambonis come out. Tim Gleason flattened Dan Fritsche about 10 feet in front of us. Sweet!!! :usa:

I was liking the look of the Walker, Yelle, Kostopolous line until it ended with Kostopolous getting knocked out. I think this line could be a real pain in the a$$ for other teams.
How I've missed Aaron Ward for the last 2 years.
I liked parts of that game and others I could do with not seeing again.
And Afinenginov is still an a$$. Guess you can take him out of Buffalo, but can't take Buffalo out of him. Has he signed yet or is he still on try out? Him and Kovalchuk together could spell trouble for us.
One more game to work out the kinks then it starts for real.

The goal horn now sounds like some kind of alarm. The girl needs to be canned. How are you gonna interview someone holding the microphone to ask the question and the mic is not on you so we CAN'T hear the question!
The game had moments that were "good" the TK fight with Gratton, TK was 'good' until Gratton popped him with that one hit to the face, and it was like the Boulerice/Downey dealio in Dallas all those years ago. Mo said he was 'ready to come on back' but they held him out and will hold him out tommorow. I think that's prudent.
I thought they came out with hop, they outshot the Thrash what was it 12-1 after 1, and the Thrashers started to get some jump in them in the dreaded second period. (what is it with us and 2nd periods?) I thought the PP was stinky as all get out and wayyy too damn fancy for me. The Corvo 5-3 PP goal was a beauty, and that Staal rush to create the sequence where he scored on Legace was nice. I don't know if it's just me, but everytime I see the puck underneath Erik Cole's feet, and him trying to get a 'handle' on it, I think pending disaster. His pass to Whitney though was a beauty for that GWG.
I just saw a lot of sloppiness still. For all the stuff they're going over on a daily basis, it seems like only bits and pieces get put into play when games are being played. It's very confounding.
I will say, a fourth line of TK/Yelle/Walker is not too shabby. I agree with SHC on the Rod/Decision making thing. I thought Jussi looked good in his first preseason game. It seems to me collectively, there is still some kind of timing/rust issue. I'm hoping they can shake this crap off and get it together. I thought Corvo was going to KILL Max Afinigenov (sp) - he was screaming at him from the bench - completely unglued. I've never seen Corvo like that. Oh, and I think Boris Valabik hates our #15, that hit #15 put on the big ol' 6'6 dude was great. Valabik was trying to get under his skin after that, and it wasn't workiing.
It was good to see the crowd tonight; I'm thinking there were some freebies out there - it seemed more like a crowd that may or may not have been to a game. The kids (teenagers)to the left of us were all excited to be there "it's our first hockey game live" and cheered all night.
Ray Whitney got clobbered in the face with that puck. Very concerning especially the way he grabbed his face. I'll take the win, but as Jussi said in the post game, "we need the full 60 minutes" . I'll throw another cliche in and say, I'm looking for the oh so elusive "jam" in their game. ;)
Mr. Socal snagged another t-shirt from the Storm Squad without even trying, hehee. It was coming at us like a missle, and he just had to put his arm up and snag it.
Also agree ThankS God for Cam Ward.

On the other hand, there is this big ol SOG sign on both sides of the ribbon board that I didn't notice at the last game.

I don't believe they'd changed anything on the scoreboard layout. They had added a stationary block on the ribbon board in the endzone area that had the score and SOG etc. I didn't like it much. The SOG section contained these 4 black squarish boxes in between the title and the actual SOG listing. Weird.
I think Whitney's goal is a good example of why you keep Erik Cole around. There's probably not 5 players in the league who could have gotten to that puck like he did. And I swear he makes better passes off the rush than he does when he's got all day in open ice. He improved markedly as the game went on. As did Whitney.
I wouldn't put too much stock in the SOG count for the night. I had commented in the first (when I had counted 3 for Atl and they'd recorded 1) that I didn't know what they were smoking down there. Then I checked out the officials' box....I swear they had some fan in there doing it. There was an extra dude in a baseball hat and he seemed to be screwing around. At some point we got a shot and when I looked up they'd taken one away from us instead of adding it! They fixed it pretty quickly but, anyway, not sure how accurate that really was....
Have I ever mentioned how much I LOVE.IT. when Corvo gets mad?
And yes, Afinogenov is still a prick. I really hope he doesn't stay in our division.

Our neighbor (the husband) says "do you really think he needed to be interrupted from Chuck K so you can tell him about Corvo's cuteness?"
The ribbon board SOG sign thing those blocks looked like "bricks"??? I didn't get it. I thought for a minute they would do a running tally of each period in those blocks, but it appears to be decorative.
Afinigenov is a jackass. Apparently he's bud's with ATL's #17, so he does have an inside track if you believe the chatter there-if so, he better watch out for our #77, he'll kick his ass. :0

I mentioned it earlier. Wallin had a really tough time getting to the bench at one point (even the linesmen helped him) and he went to the locker room for a short period of time (as did Cole) but, came back quickly and seemed fine. He was back so quick I figured it had to be equipment but, it looked bad at first. Ward was messing with his foot all night long but, I never saw him leave. Neither of their total ice times seemed to suffer, though Ward did take fewer shifts in the second.

From The Tennessean (http://data.tennessean.com/v2/bin/pluckTools/display/groupblog.php?blog=ab5f3262-58ab-4834-949f-0e41f32d05ee&plckController=PersonaBlog&plckScript=personaScript&plckElementId=personaDest&plckPersonaPage=BlogViewPost&plckPostId=Blog%3aab5f3262-58ab-4834-949f-0e41f32d05eePost%3abb9a211e-0fb8-44ea-a9ac-cd42c60c8d14&sid=sitelife.tennessean.com) the Preds will play their "top 2" lines.
Both top lines – Steve Sullivan-Jason Arnott-J.P. Dumont and Mike Santorelli-David Legwand-Martin Erat -- will be used together for the first time in the preseason.
One reason is that Trotz wants to make sure his special teams units are all on the same page as the regular season nears, and most of the power-play forwards are among those top two lines.
The third and fourth lines may be a little different than what we'll see during the regular season.
Pekka Rinne is scheduled to go the distance in goal, with Dan Ellis scheduled to play the entire game on Sunday in Columbus.

They don't count shots unless Cam has to make a save. I wasn't at the game so obviously I don't know, but perhaps they weren't all countable shots?
I don't count them unless Cam makes a save AND they are on-goal (whether Cam touches it or not) and I saw at least 6 on-goal saves (mostly in the first) that never made it on the tally in the building.

I thought the rule for a shot on goal, is that it's only considered a SOG, if the puck would have gone in the net if there wasn't a goalie there.
For example, Cam could flash-out his glove and do a fancy-schmancy windmill move catching the puck, but if the puck wouldn't have gone in anyway because it would have sailed over the net or beside it, it's not counted as a SOG.

Not sure whose definition you're clarifying but, that's my understanding as well. Hence my counting them when they are on-goal. And Atlanta had a bunch on-goal last night that were not counting in the video display.
There were several I noted to Mr SHC and mentioned that maybe they were not as "on-goal" as they appeared from my seats and I'm not couting those. I think I gave them about as much of the benefit of the doubt as I possibly could.

That's become my understanding, which is why a shot that hits the post isn't recorded as a SOG.

A shot on goal is a shot that will enter the goal if it is not stopped by the goaltender. A shot on goal must result in either a goal or a save.
Every goal and every save count as shots on goal. This leads to an exception to the definition of a shot on goal. If the ball or puck hits the goal post or crossbar, ricochets off the goaltender, and into the net, it is a goal, and therefore a shot on goal, with the exception of NHL or ice hockey. However, had the goaltender not been present, the shot in question would not have resulted in a goal, and therefore would not be counted as a shot on goal.
In the NHL, a shot that is deflected wide or blocked before it reaches the goaltender is not counted as a shot on goal.
Shots that sail wide or high of the net and shots that hit the goal post or crossbar are not considered shots on goal, but are scored as shots. If a goaltender blocks a shot that would have missed the net or hit the post, it is not considered a shot on goal. It is the judgment of the official which shots are counted as shots on goal. Additionally, attempted shots that go wide are not recorded as an official statistic in the NHL, so shots on goal are often referred to simply as shots in that league
The statistical category that tracks shots on goal is abbreviated SOG. In a typical NHL game, each team will get close to 30 shots on goal.
From WIKI sports I looked it up.

Here's the the thing on the SOG conversation as it pertains to last night's game: I think everyone has their understanding about what is or isn't a SOG correct, HOWEVER, as SHC pointed out in her original post, for those of us actually at the game last night, the person/persons who were tallying the SOG totals were kinda playin' loosey goosey with the interpretation.
For a small example, I counted three separate times in the first period alone, where there was a SOG credited to ATL, and then poof- taken away, SOG for the Canes credited, and bam, 2 more added (in that same solo shot sequence). I thought my glasses were flippin' out on me; it was the most bizzaro thing I'd seen in that place in awhile. After all that, I stopped looking at the SOG tally, because it didn't to seem to me that it would be authentic by the end of the night.
So in a nutshell, we're all pretty much in agreement on what is and isn't a SOG, but the dudes hitting the buttons in the RBCC (and there were two guys by my glance playing around over there) had their own thing goin' on. Hub said he thought maybe they were playing a drinking game. :-

I make no representation whatsoever as to which of these pictures are of shots that are actually considered shots on goal.
