Hurricanes Recall Jay Harrison from Albany
Defenseman Bryan Rodney reassigned to AHL’s River Rats
Sunday, 12.06.2009 / 10:15 AM / News By Ken Preston

RALEIGH, NC—Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has recalled defenseman Jay Harrison from the Albany River Rats of the American Hockey League. Rutherford also announced that defenseman Bryan Rodney, who was most recently recalled to Carolina on Dec. 3, has been reassigned to Albany.

Harrison, 27, played in 10 of Carolina’s first 13 games of 2009-10, before being assigned to Albany on Nov. 3. In his time with Carolina, Harrison scored a goal, earned two assists (3 points) and totaled 27 penalty minutes, while averaging 12:05 of ice time per game. The Oshawa, Ont., native has earned eight points (1g, 7a) and a plus-4 plus/minus rating in 15 AHL games since joining the River Rats. The Hurricanes signed Harrison (6’4”, 211 lbs.) as a free agent on July 9, 2009. He was originally drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the third round, 82nd overall, in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft.

Two things...

1) The road trip has officially begun...

http://flightaware.com/live/flight/ACA7034

2) Before they headed out there was a pretty full crew at practice today. Chip was back in the building. For those who don't get his tweets, the only players missing today were Ray, Chad, and Nic Wallin (who left the game early in the third period, anyone know why?). All three goalies were there. Jussi was back. Harrison was not there, he'll join the team on the trip.

And just to prove a previous statement where I said it was not that hard to take a decent picture to post on twitter, even a seven-year-old could do it...

Woo- I do hope Carson is coming up!

LTD, I'm getting ready to look it up- (or if puck_it comes on he'll probably be able to answer) but I'll bet they have "called up" Carson for this whole Nicky Wallin injury/situation, I'm thinking, the "announcement" hasn't happened based on the daily deadline on call-ups and the whole NHL pay vs AHL pay. I seem to recall last season, the Flames had a horrendous issue with the Cap (those couple games where they could only dress 18 guys because of $$$) and the discussion on the intermission report on TSN was that if you call a guy up on an "off day" non game day, you're still paying at the NHL salary, to save $ you can call him up on game day, and pay him for the 'game'. Then there's deadlines Noon, 5pm etc. that all play into the call up dealio too. It's very confusing, but knowing how much we need to shave expenses, it probably has something to do with that.

Pittsburgh with our defense decimated...Should be a great opportunity to rack up another 0 points toward one of those top draft picks...so that we can pick an underrated player who most teams would foolishly pick in the third round

Here are the Pens' projected lines, according to the official Penguins website:

Forwards
Talbot-Malkin-Guerin
Dupuis-Letestu-Fedotenko
Cooke-Staal-Kennedy
Rupp-Adams-Godard
Defense
Gonchar-Orpik
McKee-Letang
Eaton-Skoula

Looks like Sid's still out with his groin problem. He didn't play their last game.

I was Lowes yesterday and passed a car in the lot that had a "YINZ" sticker in their window (the round black/white OBX style sticker) and then 2 cars down was a red van with fancy tinted windows that had SCC graphics and the 4 SCF tickets in the back rear window and the plate was "ONEILL 1".

I have no idea why I felt like sharing that, but there you go.

My Saturday night hockey was great with the Canes winning early then my 'Hawks beat the Penguins and only my Sharks let me down by losing to CGY.

Anyway, the Pens lost a game- they didn't look so spetactular vs CHI, so I'm of the mindset that if these guys can focus, and the call ups can play well, we should be able to skate with them and get the freakin' first win.

Yinz = in the simplest form is like Ya'll - common for most from the western PA region (PIT) area. Also common in West Virginia. Yinz is plural for youn's depending on who you speak to from what specific area of Western PA. It's very complex; especially if you've not heard the word uttered before. :-

ex: I'm going with yinz to the mall. or Yinz'eat yet?

Officially (if y'all is an official word ), y'all is actually spelled y'all. It's a contraction of you and all with the apostrophe taking the place of the o and u in you.

I finally finagled all my spell checkers so that y'all is in my lexicon and doesn't get prompted anymore as a mis-spelling. As much as I use it there's a time savings.

And, might I add, "you all" is grammatically correct.

Officially (if y'all is an official word ), y'all is actually spelled y'all. It's a contraction of you and all with the apostrophe taking the place of the o and u in you.

And "yinz" is actually "yu'ons" as it is a contraction of "you ones" which is NOT grammatically correct. At least that's my story.

I'll make a prediction: Our first road win will NOT be against the Pens.

There are rednecks everywhere. And generally, good ones too.

Yinz, from what I understand, originates from young ones, young'uns, you'uns, to yinz. It may also be the you ones from A's post. They aren't really sure.

Couple of game comments in Branecky's blog about Leighton...

Rutherford said that Niclas Wallin will not play tonight at Pittsburgh, paving the way for Brett Carson to make his season debut on defense. He also said that Jussi Jokinen will be in the lineup, and that Coach Paul Maurice would need to make one forward a healthy scratch.

And speaking of the Juice, since his countryman hasn't given me any new quotable quotes lately I'll pick out this one from today's N&O (http://www.newsobserver.com/sports/story/229104.html):

"Obviously, that's important for us, a big goal for us, to win that first one," forward Jussi Jokinen said Sunday.

Has losing on the road become a mental thing?

"Maybe," Jokinen said. "Obviously when you lose that many in a row it starts to become mental.

"We'd like to get that out of the way [tonight] and not have to think about that anymore. What better place would there be to start to win on the road than against the best team last year, the team that won the Cup?"

My comment was more along the lines of I'd rather see Sutter, Jussi, etc have the minutes. If Brindy's in, Mo tends to give him the minutes. With Eric & Jussi "healthy", I guess it forces the issue.

Yinz = in the simplest form is like Ya'll - common for most from the western PA region (PIT) area. Also common in West Virginia.

It must be the Pennsylvania part of West Virginia. I'm from outside Charleston (my parents and every other family member, born and raised in southern West Virginia; I attended college in West Virginia with natives from around the state and kids from the northeast because we were super-cheap compared to their schools) and I don't think I've ever once heard a West Virginian say anything other than "y'all."

I get that yinz comes from "you ones," but I can never figure out who in the heck would have said "you ones" instead of "you all" in the first place.

Now, in regards to tonight's game (I like how our game day threads are becoming more like unofficial off-season threads ), wow re: Roddy being scratched. And I'm with Kat -- it might be needed, but it makes me sad, too.

On a totally unrelated note, CL, I'm finally going to "A Christmas Carol" tomorrow night.

Did he use overdue as well? As much as everyone loves #17 and all of his contributions to the organization, if you have to pick a forward to sit, against a team that you're going to need speed to compete against, who else do you pick?

Honestly I'd almost put Brindy on D and put A. Ward in the pressbox, then him and Tripp could spend the entire time playing pattycake and forslund could call the game, but that'd be too many good things to see in one game.

^^As much as that makes me happy, it makes me sad, too. Poor Brindy. I hate when these older players play until the org has to force them out, rather than just retiring with style.

I don't think it really is about him being older. He just never has been the same since he hurt his knee. The fact that he seriously hurt his knee given his age is the issue. That is so unfortunate too, for him and the Canes.

I don't blame him for not retiring yet, I would not leave 6-7 million dollars on the table. That being said, I do hope after this season he hangs it up. Last thing I want to see is him get bought out or for them to make someone else the C while he is still on the team.

Brindy is still my favorite Cane and one of my all time favorite players. He was one of my favorite players even before the Canes. (him and Recchi from me growing up a Flyers fans). I remember the day it was announced that we were getting him, I was so excited. He definitely is not above scrutiny, but for what he has done for the organization he gets less grief from me when I am complaining about our players.

That's how I feel too Butters. It's just real sad -- it's come to this.

and all the piling on I "get" - he shoulda been gone and all that stuff, I get that too, but in this big ol' ugly mess, there's enough blame to go around, I just have a hard time putting it "all" on the captain.

E, the first thing I thought about when I got that tweet about Rod was Tripp and the blathering that will go on in an effort to "defend" Rod's honor.;) I was probably just as upset just thinking about that, as I was hearing about Rod.

I could tell Forslund was really struggling with the whole idea of the scratch, and I'm guessing it's because of his loyalty to Rod, or that he feels that there has to be a more honorable (my word) way to do this. Well if there is, I sure as heck would like to know..... I thought it was interesting at the end of the interview with David Glenn, Forslund said "I'm still wrapping my brain around the Brind 'Amour scratch. " That was pretty interesting to hear.

At the risk of another kinda random post....

During the Canucks game, they had that "flashback" or whatever they call it - and it was when O'Neill scored his 40th goal to become the first hurricane to do so. Anyway, it was an EN goal (they also showed the 39th goal) and after it was over, Ronnie and Brindy came over to congratulate him. Rod looked SO animated in whatever it was he said to O -- made me think about how long it's been since we've seen him like that.

caneshockeychick
12-07-2009, 03:24 PM
IMO its somewhat of an odd thing to be so stacked at center, with good players, that when looking at who would be scratched it would be Brind'Amour. I've always been a fan. I swear sometimes it was him willing our guys back in 2006 to win that cup. But he's not the same as he was back then. We finally learned that he's just as likely to fall to injury as is anyone else and maybe, maybe, at his age, he just doesn't come back from it. Not like he was.

He's a different Brind'Amour, there's no doubt about it. I'm definitely sad. But, then I wonder, looking at our roster....who do you scratch?

A severe reduction in ice time... I get. And I can't stand Brindy starting on 4th (where he should) and ending up with 2nd line minutes, so is this Mo's way of putting a Master lock on the refrigerator? What?... he's can't resist the temptation to give Brindy top minutes? Our Captain is a big yummy Mallomar sitting in at a weight watchers meeting? I can't believe he's getting full-on dropped from the line-up, but like LTD said, "my head gets it."

The thought of the "C" sitting in the press box is putting a sad "holy crap" into all of my thoughts at the moment.

...and we're still gonna' get killed tonight.

I was in Florida last year when the team went out West and eventually sent Roddy home. I never did get the full story. Did they send him home to rest a 'nagging' injury or was it more of the same of what's going on here, just sending him home rather than scratching him like tonight.

livinthedream

To be honest, it was kind of quietly reported, we were on a west coast swing with less media coverage and without today's twitterazzi, but no, he was sent home specifically to rest an injury versus healthy scratch. At the time one could have read into it what they wanted to, but it was always represented as injury-related.

Because the man is a competitor.

Because he has worked his ass off his ENTIRE life to do what he's doing.

Because he has faith in himself (justified or not) that he still has the ability.

Because a lot of things in life are a LOT easier said than done.

I have no idea why Rod Brind'Amour isn't the same player. Could it be his knee that's affected his speed/strength. Could it be some hard to explain thing - much like how awful this team is when it shouldn't have been THIS awful.

There are a helluva lot more players that don't have the work ethic or the consistency (up til now) that #17 has....and they don't walk away either, because something inside tells them they can get thru it.

And if they didn't have that internal drive to fight against the odds and compete every day of their lives - they would never be where they are (or have been) to begin with.

I agree - I guess no one knows but Rod, but I cannot imagine him doing this just for the money.

AGREED heartily and your first post was bang on.

If Rod's a football player or a basketball player, I'd say those guys all spend money like it's water and don't realize the career ends and they're trying to sell a championship ring on Ebay or something and they NEED the money gotta keep chasing the money because they're ill equipped to be normal people when it's over; Hockey players, IMO just aren't that way the ones that are, are exceptions. Sure they're going to make money. Sure, they want to be paid. Rod has made his money and even if we buy him out, he's going to get a good chunk of this contract we keep talking about because he's over 35. So to me, the money argument isn't my scene.

Did Forslund just say that Crosby has 19 goals this season?

Our leading scorer doesn't even have 19 points.

And no mention of the scratch in the pregame comments unless I missed them. Tripp mentioned during the standard "injuries and scratches" segment as a coach's decision that will be evaluated on a game-by-game basis since all the forwards are now healthy.

Our forwards (some that I won't mention) need to back check with as much effort as they do on offense. Once the puck is turned over, they relax and drift back. They're leaving the defense no option but to lay back and that's feeding right into the skills of the Pens forwards; Open ice, speed thru the neutral zone and room to create chances. Our forwards lack of hustle back is feeding right into their hands.

Joni was sweating in the post game interview. He's actually human. Plus he's a little funny with his post game interview. Joni's ability to play lots of minutes without looking tired is amazing. He does have outstanding recovery time. After that icing, I was like - UGH, DUDE. But he seems to thrive.

That ending was scary, but it's not how you win, just do it.

Hub's nephew was in the bldg for the game as usual, he sent hub his typical 1st period text, (after the 2 goals were scored by us) and says "I' don't get how the Canes are in last place? this team looks like the team I remember? WTH?) So hub texts back- we play for 40 mins, this is how we often look- good for a stretch then collapse; so hub, who's usually positive about everything related to this team, says "I'll bet you a dinner at Ruth's Chris that this lead evaporates" we score the 3rd goal in the second, and then the Pens get those two, and nephew says, "should I have taken you up on dinner?" and he sends a text back "there's lots of time for collapse is what I'm saying" Nephew says, they look too strong in all zones to me, I can't bet.

It's pretty crazy when your own family has a stronger belief than you do about the team. I guess that's what fresh eyes does eh?

I'm glad they regrouped and we won. However it happened, doesn't matter.

Brind'Amour scratch = 1st road win

Coincidence??? I think not.

I will first state that Rod Brind'Amour has had a fantastic career, and has made immeasurable contributions to our organization. He was the MVP of our Cup run, and should've won the Conn Smythe...

However, there's no question that this move was long, long over-due. It has been obvious for two years now that Rod is neither the player nor the leader of this team that he used to be. It appears that when he isn't playing the way he's expected to, he cannot hold the rest of the team accountable for their shortcomings. Plus, the team plays better without him, and has for two years. If our organization wasn't scared to death to hurt someone's feelings or be labeled as disloyal, this situation would've been handled a long time ago. Performance can decline quickly after 35, and this process was likely hastened by the major knee injury Rod suffered. I understand that Rod has too much pride and confidence in himself to give up the C or retire, and that's why the coaching staff and management has to step in in these situations. It all goes back to the lack of accountability that exists in this organization. It's too bad that our season is already too far gone before significant action was taken on this front or any other. So actually, I am not blaming Brind'Amour for this mess, but rather our incompetent management and coaching staff.

When we replayed the Alberts goal a few times, we did get a big chuckle out of Cole checking Orpik.

He took a feed from teammate Ray Whitney just above the left circle and carried the puck toward the net and, after Hurricanes winger Erik Cole knocked Penguins defenseman Brooks Orpik out of the play in front of the net, threw a backhander past goalie Marc-Andre Fleury.

Cole didn't get an assist on the play, but probably deserved to get onto the scoresheet for an interference minor.

"I thought so, yeah," Orpik said. "[Cole] was driving to the net, and just kind of pushed me back into the net so I couldn't get over to [Albert]."

Gotcha, thanks for clarifying that, I didn't look at the TOI report. Dude was a machine. During that last two minutes, he'd already been on the ice for the equivalent of a full shift and I watched him skate behind the net away from the play and he held up ever so (trippism) slightly for 10 seconds or so, like he was trying to recover, then he turned the burners back on like he'd just started a new shift. He's something else.

Interesting that we've played two of our best games this season (and tallied 3 of 4 points) against the team we were supposedly built to play against.

fun time at the igloo last night. I have to say, I kind of like being in a town like pittsburgh, with people razzing you as you walk down the concourse.

Sat behind the goal and saw the Alberts and Jokinen goals and they were both incredible shots. Fleury was on fire though. Probably should have been 3-0 at the end of the first.

Overall gracious crowd and glad I got to see the igloo before they knock it down...and yes, they were all mumbling on the way out the door "how do we lose to a team without a road win in December?"

I certainly hope you're right, but have to wonder about Scott Walker. He didn't touch the ice past 11:42 into the 2nd. Yelle played another 4 shifts after that, and Samsonov played 3-- but no Scott Walker. I replayed his last shift, but didn't see anything that seemed remotely close to an injury.

(completely off topic-- but wow, what an expensive 4th line!! Walker @ $2.5M, Samsonov @ $2.5M, and Yelle @ $0.55M = $5.55M for 4th line. The only thing that would make it worse would be if Brindy were to beat out Yelle for 4th line duties, which would make it an $8M 4th line!! :eek2: )

Crap! I missed that.

I don't remember anything being said in the post-game. Wonder what's up?

Maybe it was an equipment issue with Scotty and the refs weren't going to allow us back across the ice again.

Carson and Harrison are HUGE! 6'4" and 6'5". Eric can't claim to be tallest anymore. Best thing is both can skate great. I hope we can keep this up tomorrow night.

Joni only was off the ice for 49 sec. Wow, he's so amazing. I loved it when John said that AWard did a good job of stalling so Joni could get his breath back before the faceoff.

When we replayed the Alberts goal a few times, we did get a big chuckle out of Cole checking Orpik.

Yeah, but he just got lucky.

For the record, I think Cole had another great game.

I completely agree. His skating has gotten so much better as of late. And he's been relentless on sticking with the puck.
