At some point, perhaps even over the Olympic break, i hope to adjust these rankings to compensate for each team's remaining games - obviously when BOS play NJE, somebody has to win, and that could most certainly affect comments such as 'CAR can finish as high as 1st'. Until AP decides to pay me for these nifty little reports, though, it's just something i'll have to take into account when i have the time. For now, just consider this a harmless excursion of fun, and please forgive any minor discrepancies. :-)

Projected Eastern Conference playoff line is currently 86 points. We're sitting at 61 with 17 games to play, so 25 points in 17 games, or .735 hockey. Or, basically, we can "miss" at most 9 total points. (4 losses and an OT loss; 9 overtime losses; etc.) Or, basically, 12-4-1 or better. (13-4, 13-2-2, 11-1-5, ...)

Since Jan 24th we've gone 11-3. That's .785+ hockey.

Coming up is a brutal stretch run, with 3 games vs. the Caps, 2 vs. the Pens, and 1 each vs. Buffalo, New Jersey, Phoenix, and Ottawa... but also head-to-head twice with Montreal and Boston, who we're chasing for those last two spots right now. And 2 vs. Atlanta and 2 vs. Tampa Bay, who are slotted to go 9th and 10th. Winning those 8 games against the folks we're trying to catch would go a long way towards the "p.o.o.p." margin as well. (The other players are the Rangers, Panthers, and Islanders, who we don't see again this year.)

I think it's very possible to finish at least in 3rd in the division

Well, we missed 1 of the 9 points tonight. :) On the plus side, the Rangers got thumped. Tomorrow's a big day, Boston-Philly, Edmonton-Montreal. (And yeah the Canes play the Pens!)

Hate to say it, but i'm fully expecting a 'Mo Hat Trick' this season - no playoffs, no top 5 pick, no coaching change.

Yep. We were looking at the standings after all the dust settled last night. IMO, 9th place is absolutely achievable. Go us.

Well, we missed 2 more of those 9 points so we're down to 6. 14 games to go.

Oh, what's that? The projected playoff Mendoza line is up 2 points to 88. So we're down actually to 4 points for all practical purposes.

A couple more nights like last night, and my prediction for a 'Mo Hat Trick' may not come true after all - no playoffs and no coaching change, but a Top-5 pick after all, particularly if ATL is going to make a late run at things. Mind you i'd rather see them spoil the trick by making the playoffs, but that's little more than a twinkle in some father's eye at this point, and i'm too weathered for that eye to be mine.

Part of me loved the game last night, for two reasons. First, obviously, it was a great game and solid win against the team that'll likely win the President's Trophy. Second, it downplayed Corvo's 2-goal return - truth told, i was never a Corvo fan, and i don't miss him in the slightest.

Part of me hated it, for two reasons. First, as bad as this team played most of the year, i want as good a draft pick as possible, and games like last night don't help. Second, the fact that had they played that way all season, none of us would be talking about draft picks in the first place... so of course that just pisses me off in the first place.

An NYI win tonight would put CAR ahead of them in the p.o.o.p. standings. CAR is trying to get that Mo Hat Trick after all (of course we all know Mo wasn't going anywhere anyway, but if there was even a glimmer of hope, it was disspelled last night - Dudeman's here for the duration now).

Zorak's magic numbers page puts the eastern conference playoffs line back down to 87 points, but with our 66 points in 70 games we still need 21 points in 12 games out of a possible 24. Or: at most 3 points missed in 12 games. *slow clap*

I love that CAR are still playing with pride and not tanking the season, but it still pisses me off that a team that has played so well in so many games over the past couple months dug themselves such a hole back at the gate... but then that's a Mo Tradition.

MTL and PHI have one game remaining against each other, and someone has to win. For that reason alone, CAR have to win out if they even want a shot at finishing higher than 7th (and hope that PHI and MTL lose every other game they play). There are other scenarios i can go into, but i won't at this point. Suffice to say CAR need to win out regardless, and hope for a whole lotta help. But they have no games left against WSH or PIT. Rats.

On the positive side, while CAR can no longer finish in last place, it does look like they will be part of the draft lottery. Mo Hat Trick avoided?

1 down, 6 to go. CAR can still mathematically make the playoffs, though it's still going to take a lot of help. I guess the biggest positive from the playoff perspective is that BOS have no games left against PHI, MTL, ATL, or NYR - too much remaining interplay between those teams would likely have NYI, TBY, and CAR eliminated by now.

Fair amount of action tonight, with two possible clinchers. With a TOR loss, either regulation or overtime, they will be eliminated. A TOR win, meanwhile, coupled with OTT & NYI wins, will clinch a playoff berth for OTT. And TOR play ATL tonight. Ooh, fun!

TOR have been eliminated from playoff contention, while OTT are a single point (or a point lost to both ATL & NYR) from clinching, but it can't happen tonight as all three are idle.

With a loss to MTL tonight, CAR will not be able to catch them in the standings, making 7th their highest possible finish, and also sending them back to either 13th or 14th in the p.o.o.p. standings, pending the outcome of TBY-PIT. With a CAR win and a FLA loss, meanwhile, CAR can jump into 11th in the poops.

Crazy scenarios:

Prerequisite: Carolina wins their final 5 games to end with 85 points.

Co-requisite:
1. Atlanta gets 5 or fewer points in their final 5 games
2. Rangers get 7 or fewer points in their final 6 games

Crazy:
1. Flyers get 3 or fewer points in their 6 games (@NYI, MON, DET, @TOR, @NYR)
2. Boston gets 3 or fewer points in their 6 games (FLA, @TOR, @WAS, BUF, @CAR)
3. Montreal gets 3 or fewer points in their 5 games (@PHI, BUF, @NYI, @CAR, TOR)

All that said, the Caps caught us with a similar games to go and points spread in 2007-2008, which we ended with 2 points in our final 4 games, while the Capitals went unbeaten. These things, actually, do happen from time to time.

What the caveman said. That is really condescending.

A win over CAR tonight clinches a berth for OTT. Nothing other possible clinches either way tonight, though FLA, CAR, TBY, and NYI can find themselves seriously on the brink of elimination. Put up or shut up for the Hurricanes tonight, really. A Matt Cullen hat trick would leave one vicious set of teeth marks on JR's rear. Does a 10 lb. bag of flour make a really big biscuit?
