Yeah, so like did anyone really want to see this? Annoyingly short... the only way to make this report longer is for CAR to magically jump into 29th or something...

Updated for the Olympic break. At some point, perhaps even over the Olympic break, i hope to adjust these rankings to compensate for each team's remaining games - obviously when BOS play NJE, somebody has to win, and that could most certainly affect comments such as 'CAR can finish as high as 1st'. In fact, most likely such events already make it impossible for CAR to finish first, but i'll have to catch that in the next sweep. Until AP decides to pay me for these nifty little reports, it's just something i'll have to take into account when i have the time. For now, just consider this a harmless excursion of fun, and please forgive any minor discrepancies. :-)

With an EDM loss last night, BOS and MIN can no longer finish in last place (STL lost as well last night, so they, along with DAL, still teeter on the brink). Only one 'bottom-tier' game tonight, with ANA hosting CHI. If ANA want to finish last, they'd better get on the stick, as a win tonight would put them dangerously close to being removed from this list as well.

Nobody has dropped off this list, and EDM is idle tonight. NYR can be removed tomorrow if they defeat NJE; that's it. CAR can end up anywhere from 24th to 28th tonight, depending on the outcome of tonight's collective gamage. They can also end up unable to finish higher than 13th, as a DET W/OTL or a CAR OTL/L will find them unable to catch DET.

NYR can no longer finish in last. CAR is actually ahead of FLA in the true point standings due to #wins, but FLA still has a game in hand so i made the executive decision to take that fully in account here, because i wanted to. So sue me.
This report will expand in scope a bit next week. Which it may need to if it's going to continue, as EDM could feasibly clinch last place this weekend.

Best possible outcome of Columbus & NYI game:
Columbus + 1 point to 73
Islanders + 2 points to 72
Leafs Catching up!
Toronto + 2 points to 68
As
Canes stay at 71
Regrettably, the Panthers and Lightning did not cooperate and remain at 71 and 72 respectively.

Columbus wins again to put some distance on it - YAY!
Toronto gets the OTL point to get to within two of us
Edmonton lost - but I really am not holding out any hope there.
A Florida win tomorrow, combined with embracing some regulation loss suck could help our draft position quite a bit...

Phase 1 is over from a CAR standpoint, and virtually complete overall. CBS, TBY, CAR, FLA, and NYI can all no longer finish in last. Only TOR can slip beneath EDM in the final standings now, and a single W/OTL by TOR or OTL/L by EDM will undo that.

That's pretty much the down and dirty. Apparently the Hurricanes don't want the playoffs badly enough to show up each night (which pisses me off), nor do they want Seguin or Hall badly enough to tank (which i don't want them to do - i just wish they'd make up their minds whether they suck or not).
I'll do a full update either when i get a good break from work today, or tomorrow morning before getting started.

Seriously. Just pick one and COMMIT.
According to this:
http://www.sportsclubstats.com/NHL/Eastern/Southeast/Hurricanes.html
If we win out, we have a 16.2% chance of making the playoffs (if we go 5-0-1 that drops to 1.9%)
If we lose out, we have a 47% chance of finishing last (in the east) and 51% chance of finishing 2nd to last.

^ I wonder if that percentage includes the fact that for us to go undefeated, Montreal would be guaranteed to lose 2 games and Boston would be guaranteed to lose 1. (Or I guess lose in OT.)
But anyway, I guess if they lose tonight in Montreal, they'll have decided which way to commit, eh?

MTL, STL, ANA, PHI, BOS, DAL, and NYR can no longer finish in the bottom 5. MIN & ATL can, but won't. Mark my words. Gets tight after that.
My personal take - the Mo Hat Trick will be avoided... i think the Hurricanes will get a Top-5 pick (i wouldn't be overly surprised if they didn't, mind you). Don't look to see Mo go anywhere any time soon, though. I'd wager to say they can miss the playoffs for a good 2 more seasons before JR would even consider a replacement, 3 if the Canes lose more than 6 man-games due to injury. I wish the man no ill will, truly, but i still hold out hope he will suffer a Hulka and Bill Murray will come in and rally to troops to Belarus.

Nothing that happened last night helps CAR get a bottom-5 pick. CBS lost in OT, putting 5 teams into that 82max gridlock. Meanwhile EDM took down MIN, keeping MIN in the bottom-5 mix.
Every POOB5 team who didn't play last night, however, play today. ATL can find themselves removed from this list with a win. TOR can clinch a bottom-5 slot; further, they could perhaps even clinch the #29 slot. 4 of the 5 teams in the '82max gridlock' play tonight, with two of them facing off against each other (CAR @ TBY, of course). Without getting into all of the specifics, a lot can be decided or nearly decided tonight.

I made a mistake - NYI's max yesterday was (and still is) 84, not 82. This increases CAR's likelihood of getting a bottom-5 pick, however CAR has more wins than CBS (with both of CBS's remaining games against DET), so all things being as they are, a 6th-place (from the bottom) finish looks quite likely at this time. Had this been because they had played their hearts out all year and it was simply all they could muster up, i'd be happy with that... but since it's because they stunk up the ice for two solid months at the beginning of the season with lackadaisical efforts (including a 14-game losing streak) (and have had other similar spells since then), it just pisses me off.
TOR have clinched a bottom-5 slot, but nothing else was decided last night. Other than the fact CAR still haven't decided whether they want to suck or not. Do us a favor next year - just commit.
TBY and FLA still have two games remaining against each other, however, and as has been pointed out, one of them have to bring home points. And they can always go to OT. This is what keeps things interesting, kids.

CBS lost, TOR lost. TOR's loss clinched the #29 slot for them. CBS's eliminated MIN & ATL from bottom-5 contention, and made it quite likely they will finish bottom-5 and CAR won't.
A CAR win tonight will make it impossible for them to finish in the bottom-5. The only way NYI can finish bottom 5 is for CBS to accumulate more points in their 1 remaining game than the Isles do in their 3. The bottom 5 can be completely clinched tonight, with only the exact order left to be decided.
For the record, i am not a defeatist who wants the Hurricanes to lose, and never have been - it simply pisses me off that once again they put the playoffs virtually out of reach before many of us had even made the leap from short sleeves, and if it took them that long to start playing like they gave a damn, then i kinda want Seguin as a consolation prize for Season Under Mo Gone Wrong, Part 6 (i will be pulling for them to win tonight as i always do, however... 'pissed off' only takes me so far once the puck drops).

Looking at this after last nights games, very unlikely we get top 5 pick. Really needed Columbus to get a pt last night. Unless they happen to beat Detroit in their last game and we lose last 2 without getting a pt, don't see it happening.
Could help that FLA and TB play a pair and after St Louis' comments, I don't expect TB to try too hard to beat FLA. Need one team to take both of those games. Think FLA could, but can they beat NJ too? NJ is going to be playing to win the Division.
We own the tiebreaker with NYI also. We're going to finish 7th worst. So barring some miracle (drawing the #1 and moving up to 3rd overall) we'll be picking 7th or 8th. I think that's how that all works.

NYI & CAR can no longer finish in the bottom 5, so i restructure this once again to map where CAR can finish. Welcome ATL back to this list therefore. CAR currently sit in 25th, but can climb as high as 23rd. After the lottery, they can feasibly draft anywhere from 2nd to 9th, meaning an NHL-ready skater could still be acquired.
An ATL win tonight over WSH means CAR can finish no higher than 24th. A CBS win over DET now means absolutely nothing to CAR.
Bottom 5 is clinched, though TBY or FLA (or perhaps even both) could certainly slip past CBS due to the fact they play each other twice and somebody has to win those games.

CAR finish in 24th, and can pick anywhere from 3rd to 8th. Mo Hat Trick virtually accomplished, pending the outcome of the draft lottery Tuesday. I just hope they don't pull another Paradis in the draft.
I believe it breaks down thusly:
4.7% chance of drawing the 3rd overall.
9.9% chance of drawing the 8th overall.
85.4% chance of drawing the 7th overall.
