Chip tweeted that Staal is heading back to Thunder Bay because of the death of one of his wife's family members, and will miss at least a game. Who gets the next Albany callup?

The Canes just tweeted the same info except it said probably 2 games (since we have a back to backer?)..
On a different note, I notice on the Canes schedule page it says this game is in HD, but I don't see any news about it? Anybody know?

Very sad to hear about Eric's sister-in-law via those tweets- when Chip tweeted that he went to TB, I was immediately thinking of a grandparent or something; Gosh it seems like the first time I remember hearing about her illness was the year after we won the Cup(?) Tripp mentioned it, iirc. Silly me, thinking that perhaps she had overcome the battle. Only 26, Terrible to hear. :(
I wonder if they will call anyone up. I guess they need to since that would be a gap to fill and now they're saying it'll be two games.

Catch the game, walk across the street to Tootsie's for a beverage and stagger your way down Broadway. Nashville is a fun town. If you are really adventuresome, check out Printer's Alley. From what I hear, there is some "interesting entertainment" to be had there.

Rippy's BBQ a few door down from the rink and then the game and you'll be set. Nashville is such an awesome town, and their arena is pretty cool. Have fun Rock!

Really sorry to hear about Tanya's sister. Very sad to lose someone at such a young age. And I suspect Eric's pretty close as well (haven't he and Tanya known each other forever?) so I'm sure this has weighed on all of them for quite some time. Just sad to hear.
Man, I wish I could have gone to Nashville, I know a few who are headed there this week. I really want to visit their arena. I was supposed to go on the trip E referenced above but had to miss out then too. Maybe their division will be our home and home next year and I can go then.
For those not on twitter, here's today's twitpic. I believe today is the first time we've seen this fellow on Raleigh ice, correct? I'll post more later tonight of him and Zach and others, back to work for now.

Terribly sad about Tanya's sister. My memory of being a new parent is that you are kind of slapped awake about how precious and fragile life is and felt very mortal. I can't imagine the range of emotions and worry that young couple has had over the recent past. :(

Very sad about Tanya's sister. Cancer is such an awful thing. My thoughts are with Eric, Tanya and her family. To loose a child so young must really be hard on Tanya's parents, especially after dealing with her illness for so long already.
Great pic, LTD. Jiri is SOOOOOOOOOOO young! He brings youth and energy to the team. I hope he gets to stay a bit longer this time. I'll be at a women's basketball game tomorrow night (NCSU vs. Maryland, ACC begins!), so once again I won't be able to see him play. *sigh* Hopefully Friday and then see him live on Sunday!

If memory serves me correct, Albany does have a game tonight. I was almost expecting all the call ups to come in on Thursday just for the game but I guess since we have back to backs on Thursday and Friday, that would be 3 in a row for the utes.

Yes, very sad news for Eric and his wife.
I've had friends who have a lost an immediate family member soon after the birth of a child. I know first-hand that the new Mom or Dad goes thru a terrible depression, because not-only is s/he grieving for a lost parent or sibling, s/he's also grieiving that his/her newborn will never know the grandparent or aunt/uncle.

Shortly after the birth of their son, it was mentioned that the wife and baby were staying in Thunder Bay for a while. I had assumed it was due to Tanya being a young mother, first baby, no family in the area and Eric's travel. There may have been other reasons as well.
The death of someone so young really puts life in perspective...

Chip just tweeted that Samson didn't make this morning's skate at the Sommet Center. Poor kid gets his first call-up and doesn't get a chance to practice with the team.
Lines are:
Cullen/Whitney/Ruutu
Sutter/Jokinen/Tlusty
Dwyer/Kostopoulos/Boychuk
Yelle/Brind'Amour/Samson (Tlusty subbed in practice)
ETA educated guess that Chip made the trip to Nashville? He's fired off 7 tweets in the last 15 minutes
ETAA make that 8 tweets, latest:
ice_chip: They were calling for 2-4 inches of snow today in Nashville. May miss that forecast by about 2-4 inches.
ETAAA Guess I should just keep this post open until skate is over. Chipgasm continues:
ice_chip: Word has it Erik Cole will be back next week. Still some uncertainty with Chad LaRose.

Just looked at my Twitter feed and it looks like Samsone has made it to the hotel. Great to hear.
So I've not harped on the Coach in awhile so I'm gonna kick of 2010 with a mini rant; No offense to my guy TommyK, but if we're getting a look at Boychuk, can we please play him with some offensive types? Same with this Samsone kid. One thing I liked about Peter, among many things, was when we did call up kids, he moved them right up to the first line to see what happened with them - how they reacted to the 'stage' of playing with a Staal or Whitney; His philosophy was that you can't see what a kid's got playing on a checking line or 4th line. /rant over.
on a total sidenote : I just got a text from a friend who regularly "watches" NHL Live on NHLN everyday back in CA. They show the NHL Store in the background for most of the show, and you can see the clerks dressed in various NHL gear as they work the registers- Well there's a kid behind the cash register wearing a Canes tee. He just "had to" let us know so I get this urgent text about it. He said "you never see those clerks wearing anything but Rangers, Bruins Philly, WSH and PIT gear" So he wanted me to run to the TV and look, knowing that I just listen on my XM unit. So thumbs up to the kid in the NHL Store.
Deb & EJ (on NHL Live) just talked about the Staal LOA/missing the NSH game; They both commented on how "it's been known" around the league, about the behind the scenes struggle for Eric & his wife and family, and her sister's illness and it hadn't been brought up in "national circles" because they weren't sure if Eric wanted it out there. On ABC 11 sports last night, Mark Armstrong mentioned in his reporting of Eric's LOA, that Henry Staal has been "childhood friends" with Tanya's dad and talked about how close they all are. Makes you really feel for the loss and what the entire clan is going through and it makes you think how much this has been weighing on Eric. :(

I may know who that is! And I think they may have sat next to you during the playoffs last year! Do you remember a kid (college) and his g/f that sat next to you that I knew? His friend works for the NHL store in the baseball offseason (he works at Yankee stadium in the summer and his Dad works for the NYY). The two of them were at the Winter Classic and then they were returning to NYC following. I'll have to double check on when he was returning to NC. If it wasn't him, then there were 2 Canes fans in the NHL store this week - lol.
edit: oh wait sorry - just re-read. It couldn't have been the one from here since he was behind the register, but maybe it was the friend. Neverrrrrrmind.

From the hockey dept:
Predators injuries. RW Joel Ward (lower body) is questionable; RW Jerred Smithson (hand), RW Jordin Tootoo (foot), LW Martin Erat (knee) are out.
with an update from the Tennessean blog:
For*ward Joel Ward will miss tonight’s game against Caro*lina with a wrist injury, so recent recall Ben Guite will be in the lineup against the Hurricanes.
Goa*lie Pekka Rinne will be debu*ting new pads when he starts against the Hurri*ca*nes tonight. He’s bro*ken them in over the course of the last four prac*ti*ces. The pro*cess of brea*king in pads used to take goa*lies much lon*ger than that, but new equip*ment makes it easier. ``Nowa*days all the stuff is almost game-ready, so you don’t have to do any magic tricks to make them sof*ter,’’ Rinne said. ``You used to do things like throw them in the steam room and stuff, just to break them down.’’

Dontcha hate it when a night of potential just collapses?
I ended up working until 7:30...walked in, started the grill (for a great flank steak I'd been marinating), built a fire, and then summarily got called for another work issue. Had to delegate the steak and the fire and work for the next hour, trying to juggle all that plus the football and hockey. The hockey sucked, the football game may end up a laugher.
The fire and steak was good, but I have to sit here until it dies down enough to go to bed (since the football sucks)...

Funny to read the thread and what was being said---that's the entertainment of the evening.
I've never noticed that Pred-head when I've watched NSH games. I like that they lifted that from the Sharks.
It's tough to win games when you can't get the hell out of your own damn way. They may have played 20 minutes of good hockey, then it was stupid sh** falling on themselves, taking crap penalties, and viola--- here's the result. Not a surprise. Top it all off, two late period goals. Seriously?
Great job by Samson to come up and play so dang well. I know he's playing on adreneline, but he looked strong as a call up.
I hope that Sullivan is ok. That was a tough hit to see and especially on him.
COL lost in a brutal way last night vs NYI. They're resting comfortably here in Raleigh. Tommorow night should be real interesting.

Ok, well something exciting just happened in the football game - someone ran out on the field. But since the networks don't show those dumbasses, the used the BLIMP cam to show the whole field and Musberger said "security will remove the idiot from the field". But you could see the guy kinda trotting from somewhere around midfield down toward the endzone all by himself, when some blue shirted people approached him from all directinos and he just laid down on the 5 yard line.
I guess that salvaged my night.

The football game is pretty exciting now for sure. Now I really have to decide who to pull for. Hard to pull against the backup QB and the 1 armed Colt McCoy as their biggest supporter on the sideline. If Texas can hold Bama on this drive, my money is on them getting the 3. to go ahead.

If you mean for last night's game (you posted this in the NSH thread so I'm checking) Yes, saw them, they were Avs assistant coaches. saw them with the head coach Joe Sacco at the morning skate watching the Canes too, that's why I recognized them. Plus if you're looking during every game during warm ups, you will see the opposing assistants watching warm ups in that section.
At the same sequence, I spotted Tripp & Bob Brind 'Amour on the landing right at 115/116 chatting away like two girls. It makes me laugh like crazy cause they're just like old friends.

Thanks SoCal! and yep, wrong thread. Knew that they were unlikely to be scouts, but I couldn't figure out who they were or their significance.
