Time for Cam to break Irbe's record!

If you're going to the game, bring a few extra bucks with you, if you can. At the entrances, player wives & girlfriends will be collecting money to go toward purchasing cases of bottled water for Haiti (http://hurricanes.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=514604) relief.

There's also a lawn party planned with the usual games and a live band--scheduled to start at 3PM, unless it's raining.

Joe Corvo posters will be distributed, too.

Puck-drop at 5:00PM

LET'S GO 'CANES!!

FYI, I had intended to hit the RecZone tomorrow morning for the pre-game skates (word was that the Boston skate at 8:30 am was open to the public!), but I just got word that both practices have been officially cancelled by both teams, in case anyone was headed over there.

hope the canes don't forget what happened the 2nd game of the year against boston, looked like a red cross blood drive taking place. if boston so chooses to take it to the streets we have no answer so not much we can do to stop them. thats okay though boston, theres nothing you can do to change last year.

Cool! Please report back and let us know what you think. We've been tempted before but up until now the weather just hasn't been cooperative. Hope it is today. Pretty outside now but I've heard showers later?

^^ Ditto SC, we were going to do the last one but it was during all that rain, and it rained like crazy, but have heard that it's very well attended. Will be interested to hear your take on what it's like.

LTD- I saw a glimpse of the weather, it appears rain is later-like when we're in the game and leaving the game. So hopefully it'll hold off for the tailgate.

See ya'll there. Hoping for a good home game.

Well this has been a nice surprise so far. All I had hoped for was not to get embarrassed and to get my picture taken on the ice. A win wasn't on the radar at all.

after ray whitney just walked through the defense, faked everyone out of their britches and passed it over to sutter for a goal i think his trade value just went up. hopefully all those playoff owners are watching and saying i have got to have that on my team.

No kidding!

Even Sutter was amazed, FSN caught him on the bench after the goal saying "WOW!!".

Awesome!

Damn, that was fun! Especially with the obnoxious (but good naturedly so) Bruins fan across the aisle from me. And look at that...we kept Joni's minutes down and I have nothing but positive to say about his game. Wish there had been a bigger deal made about Cam's record.

SouthernHockeyChick
01-24-2010, 08:38 PM
OK, annoyed by the post-game (shocker, I know).

Yes, John and Mike, those who paid their $40 or whatever to be there tonight deserve a good game and should want a win.
But, for those of us who pay thousands of dollars every year? It makes some damn sense why we might be hoping for winning home games and losing away games (at best) so we can get a top pick. There are no guarantees with a top 2 pick but there's a helluva lot better chance with 1 or 2 than with 9 or 10 or, god-forbid, 14.

I'm not telling the team to tank. They ALREADY tanked. I'm telling them to maintain.

Best game I've been to all season...even my friend, whom I had to cajole to go to this game over football, thought it was quite the best she'd seen by far.

That goal by Sutter....man, Ray is THE MAN!!!!!!!

E's seats were awesome...laughed my ass off at all that was said by 328.

I tried to start a "WARDO" chant...fell flat. The people in the 200s right below me were like "WTF???"

It was a great game and I'm glad I got to be there :D Again, much thanks to E!!!!

And the Colts won!!!!

Now...just hoping for the Saints to win and make my whole day awesome!!!

Where the f*ck was THAT team all season???

Fast skating, crisp passing, rushes, solid defense, creativity... THAT WAS FUN STUFF.

Of course Boston looked like sh!t. Not that I minded one bit. They're still one of the most obnoxious and "entitled" fanbases in pro sports and got exactly what they deserved, which was embarrassed. JMNVHO.

Could be prouder of the team effort, and especially Cam for the new franchise record. Well deserved.

So that's what Canes hockey looks like. I about forgot. Very fun game to be out. Good way to end the weekend and start the week.

Pitkanen showed tonight why trading him is stupid. And i'm still amazed that teams have not stopped the Pitkanen/Jokinen play. I'll never tire of watching Jokinen streak to the side of the goal and watch Pitkanen thread the puck through 3-4 players right on Jokinens stick with the goal.

And Ray totally raised his trade value. Although, after watching him tonight and undress big bad Chara, I don't want to let him go

Jussi and Staal are looking great together. And I'm liking the Sutter/Tlusty/LaRose line as well. Tons of energy from them.

That was a great game -- hoping to see the boys continue to compete this hard!

Even the anthem was great! The girl who sang is a friend of ours. She's been in A Christmas Carol with our theatre company numerous times. She's going to graduate from high school in the Spring. Doesn't she have a great voice?!! :D

She had a great voice. I can't believe she's still in high school.

KF, I totally agree with you. I don't want Ray to go. Intellectually, I DO understand that he will bring the greatest value so I'm kind of resigned to him going though. On the other hand, if JR trades Joni and/or Jussi, I'll be flat out pissed.

after ray whitney just walked through the defense, faked everyone out of their britches and passed it over to sutter for a goal i think his trade value just went up. hopefully all those playoff owners are watching and saying i have got to have that on my team.

Haha. My husband's best friend sent a text after that goal, and it essentially said "the price for Ray Whitney just went up" --- He's in PIT, and apparently it's all in the papers that #66 is "gunning for Ray, what's what he'd bring to the team" etc. etc. so it's a hot topic on local radio up there. I'm loathe for Ray to go there but at this point, there's just no telling.

That set up by Whitney to Sutter--- AMAZING. It was so funny how my whole section just rose up- half were shaking their heads, the others were jumping up and down and some pointing down at the ice. I will miss Ray when he's traded. I sat with hub while he was being interviewed in the post game with Tripp because it just might be the last time. :( (for now)

I'm with SHC- that was FUN! I too wish there was more of a to-do made in the bldg for Cam's milestone. CHC good for you for trying the Wardo chant. I never hear anything from 328, except the "you suck" chant.

If we weren't faithful to this team, one would think #12 and #36 have played together all year. It's crazy. and whatta know, play My Ditz 24-ish minutes and you see who he is. Joni of all the player around, is as they say a mystery. But really he's not. He's got some layers to his game that take "getting". (this is what I tell myself when things are not going well with my love #25, lol) He had a solid game, and wow, he shot the puck again with authority!

SHC I heard that yammering on the post game show- You're precisely right, we lost the season back in late Oct/Nov. Maintaining would be just fine. ;)

Oh, I'm watching NHL Network and they're of course using the wrong feed- Jack Edwards (NESN) just screamed (on the 2nd goal) "AND THE WORSE TEAM IN THE LEAGUE ARE BLOWING THE BRUINS OUT OF THE BLDG" well what does it say about your team if you lose to the "worst" jack***.

Chara looked like hell out there. Certainly not Norris Trophy worthy and the rest of the team barely showed up. Panic in Beantown.

The crowd was a bit light tonight, but I do comment people for continuing to show up, especially the casual types; cause we've not given people a reason to come- just the diehards who stick it out regardless. It's always fun to see people leaving the bldg smiling. For me, that's my goal for the rest of the year.

From ch.com:

There is NO WAY there were less than 6,000 people in the bldg. No friggin WAY. I don't know who gave that 6,000 figure, but there were more than 6k in the bldg. The now infamous black hole of 107, and the upper seats in the lower bowl, were missing people and club level areas looked spotty, but the center and ends were full and the upper level seems to continue to gather people because folks may be trying to buy on the cheap.

I'm hoping that they were still counting the $$$ as we also gave quite a bit more than $1. Some of the other teams in the league have raised quite a bit of money, I'd like us to be one of those teams.

Oh, and if Jussi isn't saying FU to Team Finland, I'll say it for him, but I think he's doing a better job of it :-

Sounds like they weren't done counting. Final number is $10,004.

RALEIGH, NC—Doug Warf, Director of Community Relations for the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes and Executive Director of the Kids ‘N Community Foundation, today announced that the Hurricanes and their fans raised $10,004 prior to and during Sunday’s game against Boston to provide fresh water to the relief effort in Haiti. The team had partnered with the local Pepsi bottler, Pepsi Bottling Ventures, to assist the Haiti relief effort by donating case packs of Aquafina water.

I was doing .75 times reported attendance, obviously. Where did the 10,000 actual attendance come from?

Even if you pull 10,000 actual out of the air there is no excuse for not giving a dollar per person.....which looks like what we met.

LeslieK
01-25-2010, 06:28 PM
Keep in mind though that the org donated $2,400, so it's not that far off from what was announced in the arena.
There were 10 different wives or fiancés at all of the entrances yesterday (and two doors with Storm Squad members since we do not have enough wives in town for each door). Through the doors, and a little more during the game, we raised $7,604. The Hurricanes players kicked off the donation by pitching in $2,400, which allowed us to donate $10,004.

So, was the total number donated $10,004 total? Or $10,004 plus the $2,400?

Not that any of the details matter. A dollar per person wouldn't have killed anyone and since many of us admit we paid the share of numerous others, that's pretty sad, IMO. I'll just remain disappointed and stop trying to gauge exactly how disappointed I am.

Personally, I donate to charities when I donate to charities, and I visit hockey games when I visit hockey games.

I mean, I feel bad for the people of Haiti (and have given to help), but I guess I don't see the point of being asked by every TV show, event, and person I go to/see to donate to it. I've done my part outside of the RBC Center, and I suspect many others have too.

SoCalcaniac
01-25-2010, 06:55 PM
That's the beauty of a free country. You can donate when and where you choose. I suspect most people like me and my husband and other people we know who were at the game already donated but wanted to do what they could if they have it in their means. I don't think anyone was feeling pressured or there was a hard sell at the door. We were greeted by Brind 'Amour's children at our door-- and many passed them by before they got a donation and it's fine.

I'm thinking since the Canes were slower than other NHL teams to have a donation event, that probably hampered the totals from yesterday; or people have been desensitized to the whole thing already and they're Haiti overloaded.

Not to derail this- but it is everywhere; but this situation is unique and I think people and organizations feel compelled to do what they can to help. I don't see anything wrong with that.

SHC, I'm with you- disappointed in the final total, but for some reason, not surprised.

as far as the donations go ..I mean I gave what cash I had on me as well, and I've done the texting thing too..but in all reality it's a donation, not a requirement. Some people (and perhaps rightfully so) probably don't want to donate to a country that hates us until they need our help..

I don't give a crap what each person did individually so no one should feel the need to justify themselves. But I had hoped for a larger donation when it's coming from an organization that I am affilitiated with (as a fan and STH of the Carolina Hurricanes). Period.

Well put, SHC. I've been stewing over a reply to that all day, but just couldn't come up with quite the right way to say exactly what you said, and as succinctly as you said.
