I think I will be in the majority here in saying that, other than Tanabe and Westlund, I hope all players will be back in Hurricane red next year. who do you think will garner the most interest? IMHO it would probably be either hlavac (strong pp player), vasicek (big and knows how to use it), or k. adams (having a strong year) however I sincerely doubt anyone would have enough interest in them to want to give up draft picks for them (but perhaps i'm wrong)

My hopes is there will be a trade for another Dman (after losing Tanabe) unless they sign Wesley as a free agent (after losing Tanabe). I'd be surprised to see KAdams go anywhere simply because he's had the best year of his career and he seems to love it here, but what do I know? I don't know if I expect Vasicek to go anywhere at this point, but I think Hlavac has chance of being traded.

I certainly do hope we can keep JD...he's a good leader and one of our best penalty killers, and doesn't ask for much money. He's a very good asset, but I fear that another lower-eschelon team will look at him quite highly as a steady, defensive 4th liner/pk man.

Wholeheartedly agree here. I'm still confident that Wesley will return to the Canes this summer, despite how much talk there is of him being a good fit on the Laffs. To me, the giveaway that says Wesley will come back is his saying that he's only in Toronto to win a Cup. Along with that supposedly he hasn't signed any contract extensions, and his family is still here in Raleigh.
Of the free agents on the Canes, I expect Cole, K. Adams, Vasicek, and Weekes to stay. And I expect Tanabe and/or Hlavac to possibly be traded/given up. Westlund's already a given because it has been said on the March 18th Kaiton's Corner ( http://www.carolinahurricanes.com/custom/rad716F9.asp ) that he was planning to get back surgery and then return to Sweden.

If i'm not mistaken, it's already a done deal that Westlund is gone... he has already signed to play in Sweden, and i don't think the circumstances that could bring him back will occur.
Tanabe... don't let the door hit you on the way out. Held out last year, finally signed a 1-year deal so he could prove himself, and (IMO) he failed miserably. Too much potential in Malec and St. Jacques, plus Knyazev may be ready for callup action if necessary. Certainly not as deep on the blueline as up front, but i don't think Tanabe is the answer.
I need to do some checking on Nikos Tselios... i'm thinking he might need to be added to the Group II list. Either way, the franchise needs some serious defensive depth. Hmm, wonder what kind of players Ferguson is looking at in the draft?
Jeff Daniels - i can't imagine him going anywhere, but i won't be too upset if he does. He's an excellent role player and always give 110%, but at the same time if he's not out there, that's another roster spot open for a baby Cane. But my personal wish is for him to stay in the organization in a coaching-type role.
The verdict is still out on Hlavac. I wasn't overly impressed with him - in fact, as i mentioned ad nauseum, i was much more impressed with Druken - but i think he still has plenty of potential if Mo could figure out what to do with him.
Beyond those guys, i agree - i'd hate to see any of them go. And i honestly can't imagine any of them will.

That's what I've been thinking too. I love the guy but we just can't really have a throw-away 4th line with all the depth we have at forward right now, IMO. Hate to see the Czechs or the Adamses take a back seat and minute ice time on line #4 but we've just got too much talent right now. Maybe talent on the 4th will force Mo to play them some more!

Well, I've given up hoping for Tanabe, but I don't think his holdout should sway anyone's opinion of him. If anything, it should have swayed opinion of him when he signed the original deal. At $550k He makes less than Malec ($700k) and just smidge more than St. Jacques (425k).
From the press I read last summer, he signed the Canes original contract against his agent's advice. His agent then quit. His new agent was trying to "right the wrongs" and get the guy some more cash this summer, but the Canes knew they had him over a barrel, so he signed. He didn't miss a day of camp, so I don't know if you can consider that holding out, imo.
In any event. I think the Tanabe fits in the middle of what the Canes have and need. They need a consistent experienced defensemen and they've got great prospects. Tanabe's odd man out it seems.

I heard Westlund was an asst. coach at Lowell. Don't know if that is just to finish out the year since he has a bad back, or if coaching is what he wants to do now.
I love Jeff Daniels work ethic and grit, but I don't think he needs to take up a roster spot next season. I would love to see him start coaching down on the farm. I think he would be a good coach and a good influence on the baby Canes.
I would like for Hlavac to be given a shot with the new boys, especially Vrbata before we give up on hm. He really handles the puck well and it would be a new and different look to have 2 skilled puck handlers out there.
I'm ready to give up on Tanabe, but I don't know if JR is. If they keep him next year, then he needs to put up or get out. St. Jacques looks like a keeper though.

We need to sign the core of those Type II's -- especiually Weekes. We cannot have a ~3.0 GAA starting for us next year, and DesRochers is not ready yet.
Cole - time for a raise. Otherwise we will need to strap him into a Bronco and make sure his seat belt is tight on his way somewhere else. That would be devastating to our second line.
Adams -- keep him.
Hlavac -- keep him too. I think his play will improve. Out Czech-Mate line could be a devastating force.
The rest can go and make room for the Baby Canes if you ask me.

I posted this over on ch.com about Vrbata and thought you all might be interested... people were asking about Vrbata's free agency status and I hurt my head trying to puzzle out the NHL CBA (which can be found at http://www.letsgopens.com/nhl_cba.php) section on this topic.
Here goes:
I am not sure of the terms of Vrbata's player contract, so it is hard to say for sure what his status will be. I do know that he was drafted in '99, and played his first NHL season in 2000-2001. So if he signed in 2000 and was between 18-21 at the time (he was 19), then it is 3 years of professional experience from the signing date before he is eligible for Group II. So he wouldn't be Group II until next summer (summer 2004).
Disclaimer: this is all just deduction from trying to puzzle out the CBA section on free agency, and guessing on his specific contract details... none of this is hard facts.

So he wouldn't be Group II until next summer (summer 2004).
Disclaimer: this is all just deduction from trying to puzzle out the CBA section on free agency, and guessing on his specific contract details... none of this is hard facts.

NHL free agency confuses the crap out of me, so I won't pretend I know what all those little numbers mean. But I will say this...
Westlund's pretty much gone...I hope we keep the others, even Tanabe. I say give him one more season. If he hasn't started to produce by the new year next season, I say trade him. There are plenty of teams who could use another defenseman.
I'd like to see Jeff D retire a Hurricane...he is a hard worker and an invaluable penalty killer.
Definitely keep Hlavac. He's been overlooked a lot because of his injury, but he has shown excellent ability to score and make plays...the man has a real nose for the net.

Give Tanabe another year. He is still quite young, and defensemen do take longer to develop. In the games I have seen this year, he has played better than he did last year.
I, too, hope we keep Daniels around until he retires; our PK would not be nearly as good without him.

If we can package Tanabe in a deal with Irbe, I say bon voyage. Yes, he may blossom into something spectacular, but I'm willing to deal with that for someone who can produce now.
He really dropped off from years past. He doesn't skate in and take that booming shot often anymore.
Yes, teams trade away young prospects and lose all the time (i.e.--Pittsburgh trades Naslund for Alex Stojanov--who?) but it's a risk worth taking.

I really hope we can keep Jeff Daniels. He's one of my favorite players and I'm always glad to see him working so hard! I'd personally like to see who we can get package Tanabe with and what we can get for him..... He just really doesn't seem to be working out his kinks here.

Tanabe is young..and he may have great potential, but I don't understand his reasoning when he is standing behind the goalie with time running out and us needing a goal to tie or win...he acts like he is afraid sometimes...and one game not too long ago, he turned the puck over and didn't bother to try and get it back..and you guessed it..we lost!!
If he can go and we can hang on to our experienced D-men..I am all for that!

it's official..
HEADED HOME: Hurricanes forward Tommy Westlund, who becomes an unrestricted free agent July 1, has signed with Swedish club Leksand for next season.
The Canes drafted Westlund, 28, after he led the Swedish league in scoring with 29 goals in 1998 but Westlund scored only nine goals in 203 games with Carolina. He was slowed by back problems in 2001-02 and spent almost all of this season with Lowell.

and get the guy some more cash this summer
Tanabe deserves less cash IMO...he just doesn't get the job done...If he goes..fine..but the rest of the players mentioned, I hope they will be back...I think everyone on the list has potential to shine..sorry to hear about Tommy..hope he will be happy...he is a tough guy..I remember when he took that hit in the mouth against Detroit....
It should be an interesting camp...lots of pressure will be on because of all the "baby Canes" fighting for a spot!!

Tanabe is a great guy but he's just not producing. IMO he's gone, but knowing our luck he'll break through with an excellent season after we trade him  ...Hope all the other guys stay, although I'm not too sure about Jan Hlavac, even though he does have potential. I would be surprised if Erik Cole, Kevin Weekes, K. Adams or Vasicek didn't stay.
Hope JR keeps JD as well....sad to see tommy go, but good luck to him in sweden!!

I just read this on 4th Period.com (I know, I know)..........
http://www.4thperiod.com/rumors/rumor.asp?id=956
It seems like a basic re-hash of what has been reported in the N&O, but isn't it interesting that there is no mention about the Irbe sitaution? Can we take from this that the situation has been laid to rest? Or is it that the ball is in Irbe's court as to where he plays next year? In the minors or in the NHL with a pay cut?

*bump*
And JD, C Adams, and Desrochers have all been signed, and Westlund is gone.
