Thus begins the 4-game road-trip. Edmonton's hasn't had a win in a long time.... so..... hopefully, we AREN'T the team to break that!

(and... if you have the TV on RIGHT NOW... "How it's Made" on the Discovery Channel is showing how goalie masks are made)

Puck-drop at 9:30PM E.S.T.

LET'S GO 'CANES!!

This one should be no problem (on paper, but we don't play on paper). The Oil have rolled over and we have stood back up and dusted ourselves off. We've been kicked around enough this season. It's time to take care of business.

The Oilers haven't won yet in 2010. If this was back in Nov/Dec, I would say tonight they get that first win. However, with the way we've been playing, I think we got this one. Or we atleast won't just hand the Oil that first win, they'll have to work for it.

This game give me some nerves. Our guys don't deserve the "worst team" moniker they've been anchored with since they sucked in Oct/Nov anymore but they'll get it back in spades if they lose this one.

So. Souray is out with a broken hand (http://www.edmontonjournal.com/sports/hockey/edmonton-oilers/Oilers+Souray+indefinitely+with+broken+hand/2506385/story.html).

And here is the other injured laundry list.

In the meantime, the Oilers do have to muddle along. With Steve Staios and Ladislav Smid slowly making their way back from head injuries, farmhand Alex Plante has been recalled from the Springfield Falcons. Theo Peckham and Dean Arsene are both injured and Taylor Chorney is already with the Oilers, a team that has now amassed 306 man games lost to a mind-boggling list of injuries and illnesses.

“That’s too many NHLers to have out,” said head coach Pat Quinn, who has long since accepted the fact he is heading into the off-season without Nikolai Khabibulin (back surgery) and Ales Hemsky (shoulder surgery).

I just don't want this team to take the Oilers lightly. Look what happened when Boston came into Raleigh and they thought so highly of themselves.. our boys handed their a$$e$ to them. So keep up the good work, guys. Beat the Oilers by playing hard and don't take them lightly.. they are wounded bears.. and everyone knows what wounded bears do...

LET'S GO CANES!!!!!!!

This definitely has the feel of the "trap" game. The losing streak up there has been painful to watch, and the running commentary in the hockey world has been "look at what has happened to the 2006 SC Finalists" although, now people have started talking about our resurgence, the commentary is not speaking out of turn. But with EDM, you don't even see a line in the Horizon (;)) for them going forward.

A bunch of small-ish forwards, guys who were supposed to be taking steps forward (Cogliano, Neilson, Gilbert Brule (ThankS God we did not draft him and took Ladd instead) and Sam Gagner specifically) not living to billing and I think the jury is still out on the 3-way trade dealio Cole-Williams-O'Sullivan , who has had kind of an up and down type situation. Only McT's old whipping boy Dustin Penner is having an OK year. He was hot early and now he's just mired with the team struggles. Poor Fernando Pisani, the Game 5 KILLER and 2006 Playoff legend; his colitis situation, I think he's only played maybe 12-15 games; The Khabibulin back injury and Ales Hemsky's injury, holy cow. Why they signed Khabibulin to that contract is mysterious at best. As an outsider it appears that they've given up at times, and then you see them all feisty and ready to kick someone. I've watched quite a few of their games during this streak and I'm just not understanding WTF is happening. Biggest issue is their kid goalies; Jeff Drouin -Delauriers has been average at best, and then Devan Dubnyk (who was drafted here in Raleigh) who still needs seasoning in the AHL he's had a tough time so far. it's just a mess.

While we were on our own ugly-a** streak, there was a belief by most of us who follow the Canes that this was an abnormal situation--- The whole "on paper" thought and we're now seeing the Canes that we thought we were getting in EDM, there's no such belief. So it really is a trap game of the worst kind. Like SD said, we've got to go in and take it to 'em; put our foot on the gas, the hand on the throat, whatever other cliche we wanna drag out.

I didn't really read up on the website about anything team related as it seems when they go out of town, the site just sits dormant; Has anyone seen if any of the injured are traveling with the team?

ETA: For those not following LGC on Twitter: Chuck K was on 620 The Buzz with his usual Game Day Preview (http://www.wralsportsfan.com/hurricanes/audio/6937519/) & gave a shout to the Caniacs who made it to the game.

Well you know I'm watching/listening for any injury updates like a hawk, but not a lot has been forthcoming.

According to Tripp on the broadcast Saturday night, Tuomo, Joe, and Erik were all planning to travel with the team although Tuomo is still a "ways off" and Joe and Erik "could" see action this week.

Hopefully they'll confirm that at tonight's broadcast. Not sure I hold out hope that we'll get much of an update coming out of today's skate.

C'mon SoCal - you know they are in a foreign country. The pony express takes awhile to get back to the states. I mean, in some futuristic world like the Jetsons, we'll be able to get updates via little hand held devices. But until then, we'll just wait for the morning paper to hit the curb.

Oh wait - except we don't have a beat writer that travels that far north. Guess we'll just run on the boob tube at 9:30 and see.

And yet the dude that does the "What We Learned" column for Puck Daddy (who has a serious hate-on for the Canes and their fans) wrote the following:

Carolina Hurricanes: Only 6,896 fans showed up to Saturday's 4-2 win over Chicago. Why, you ask? The actual answer, and I'm not kidding, is that it was snowing in Raleigh. What a market.

Yeah - let's skim over the fact that the Canes and Cam have had a stellar month/week and beat the 'Hawks, let's rag on the fanbase....again.

That pic of John & Chuck is hilarious.

I don't understand why the media dudes for the Canes are not more prolific with their use of social media. I follow all 30 teams on Twitter and you see some of the most interesting Twitpics and Tweetphotos from the very random to the routine at all hours of the day; I've seen pics of things like players heading into (insert team arena) to team members standing in the hotel lobby getting ready to board a bus or some guy trying out new sticks etc. Given that there isn't coverage on a trip like this one--- I think people would be interested in what our team is up to or even seeing random pictures of the NHL city they're in.

That Lambert dude on Puck Daddy gives Greg W/PD a bad "name". I sent the link to 3 different people and they immediately presumed "Puck Daddy" wrote it. That's the rub when you have a guy writing but the guy who owns the blog didn't even write the entry. My thought is we all know what the deal is too bad that the real "story" of Saturday night was that we friggin won the game against a team many have pegged to go all the way to the finals and on top of that, a hearty fan base did their darndest to get out and go see them and oh yeah, it was a sold out game, it was the weather that derailed the sellout.

LTD- You're right we were loud!

Just got the tweet that Cole nor Ruutu will play tonight. Does that mean Corvo is, or did they just forget to include him.

livinthedream
02-01-2010, 03:09 PM
That tweet was a little misleading IMO because it kind of implies the possibility that they might have played but were decisions made today and I don't think they were ever in question to play tonight.

I just listened to Maurice's comments (http://downloads.hurricanes.nhl.com/audio/interviews/mauricepre020110.mp3) from Edmonton, and all he said was that going forward into the rest of the season he intended to keep the Sutter/Tlusty/LaRose line together and that Staal would play with who's available acknowledging that Ruutu and Cole and Walker still out. He didn't talk about the D at all.

Listening to it again seems he makes mention that Rosey might have gotten hurt Saturday night and won't be playing tonight?

^^ I'm thinking he listened to the audio like I did LOL. After I posted that I went and checked Chad's TOI and it looked like he played normal shifts throughout the game, wonder if he tweaked his knee again and it didn't manifest itself until the skate today? Otherwise you'd think they would have called someone up by now.

 Yeah.

The other question is, The Canes tweeted that Chad was not on trip, then Chip did the same thing. Is he trying to make it like he has "original content"? or try to make us believe he's there? Surely to gosh if he was actually there, he would have tweeted what was doing at the AM skate since his forte is line combos, and Chad would not be there to be on a line combo. Or am I missing something with all this technology? ;)

livinthedream
02-01-2010, 04:24 PM
For some reason I'm not getting the most recent tweets on my Blackberry, but reading them now online isn't it painfully obvious that Chip's just retweeting from nhl_canes as if it's his original thoughts?

And since they DID know about Chad before the trip, makes it even more odd that they haven't called someone up by now, unless they thought Cole might actually be a go this week (I don't think anyone expected Ruuty to be back this week but I could be wrong).

nccanes
02-01-2010, 04:25 PM
Yes - tis quite a puzzle isn't in SoCal?

Chip was all chipgasming during games when he first got on twitter but has abandoned that completely (presumably because the Canes do it?) so now he's parroting the Canes tweets -- or is in Edmonton -- or is really unoriginal in his tweeting today.

That's a good thought CL, and I thought about it for a second too; but if you look at his Twitter Page, (http://twitter.com/ice_chip) he follows exactly 5 people/orgs--- and the Canes are one of them.

SO Forslund was just on his usual game day spot on 99.9. I think he literally should be given sainthood for putting up with the inane commentary from Mark Thomas the football guy, who spends every segment asking about what Eric Staal being Captain has done for the team, and what does this team need to do to trade Whitney & Cullen. New questions please and Maniscalco falls right there with him.

So FORSLUND had to bring up the fact that Chad isn't playing, (because they were too caught up in the "big trade" for TO and what we are going to do) and has some upper body injury; and the reason they haven't called anyone up, is because we've got roster/cap issues so we're a man down. We have to clear the deck on the Corvo, Walker, Cole status, and if we sent Carson down,we'd expose him to waivers. (I'm guessing cause of his age?) Forslund indicated it was complex; anyhoo, they thought maybe #26 would be "Ok to go" but he tried today and wasn't given clearance.

Well this is all very interesting.

Almost... and for those interested, apparently Joe Corvo IS ready to return to the lineup but can't because of the way Brett Carson was originally called up on an emergency basis. There is some stipulation that he has to be sent down in order to activate Corvo. There are some other nuances to this but they involve waivers as SoCal alluded to earlier.

But it's GREAT news that Corvo's ready to return.

Which passing lane exactly should Ward have cut off...there were two since Jokinen was doing nothing on either of the two Oilers on the 3 on 1 and a-guy-still-asleep-with-a-big-fat-minus-2-and-still-counting.

IMO, both guys are to blame. Ward didn't do the first job, and Pitkanen didn't do the second. Not saying Pitkanen didn't do anything wrong b/c he did, but Ward was just at fault. Sure he busted to get back, but once you get back and don't do anything but stand there, kind of defeats the whole purpose of getting back. And since the pass did get through and that was Joni's guy, he shouldn't have stood there either.

In other words, both D stood there with their thumbs up their assess IMO.

I think because he was an emergency call up for Corvo, he can be sent down without going through waivers-- but Corvo has to be activated first.

Carson's folks drove in from Saskatchewan and will be driving down to Calgary tonight after the game-- the first time they're seeing their son play in the NHL-- very nice. Sutter's mom, sister and brother are in town as well and well, Ray and Cam are both home as well. So many western Canadians on the team.

I think they both suck but, frankly, get sick of the whipping boy vs another Finn fave.

It was Pitkanen's man from the get-go, who he made a stupid, half-hearted play and set loose. Pitkanen actually didn't do the first job or the third.

And I didn't have that good a view of Ward but IMO, he didn't play that too awfully bad. The guy was able to make the pass way behind Ward because he had two wide-open players. Ward did cut off one of the lanes....guess he hoped Pitkanen could handle SOMEONE.

I moved from the MNLR to the MNBedR during the 2nd int. I never even made it to the 3rd's faceoff. At some point I woke up and realized there were only about 6 minutes left, it was still 4-2. We had set the TV timer and when it turned off before the game was over it was too much effort to reach for the remote to turn it back on. Just couldn't imagine a comeback was mounted.

Kinda strange to end up with that game with SO many Western Canadian family/friends able to watch this one in person.

Get Tlusty some glasses like they did "Wild Thing in Major League". He had a couple that were just wide. Whitney draws iron. The early season luck has returned.

Very sporting of Edmonton to keep us in the hunt for Tyler/Taylor by narrowing the points difference.

Can we keep Carson and send Award down when Corvo comes back?

What a terrible let down game. Canes looked tired, and flat and like all their legs had lead in them.

I could do without the Ward/Pitkanen duo for the duration. It's my personal opinion that Ward bring him into his web of bull**** play and it's a friggin disease- he did it with Alberts until he got rewarded by the coach to move back with #25 and miraculously, when Alberts was no longer playing with him, his level of play improved. It's not a coincidence, so that's just me and I won't be swayed.

We moved to our bedroom for the 3rd as well, but watched from the chaise lounge in our room, in an ill-fated attempt to be relaxing and restful and send good vibes; & not to get into bed where I would zonk out in 5 minutes. I probably should have just laid in the bed so I would have fallen asleep.

We made the goalie with three names look so great when he's not looked great AT ALL. Of course EDM was desperate, we just didn't match their desperation. So as everyone discussed before the game, the let down was brewing.

A couple posters on HF noted that AWard is so freakin busy pointing telling Pitkenen or whoever he's with who to defend, that he fails to defend his own guy. I started watching, and sure enough, there's AWard pointing all over the place. So for him its point, chop, tackle.

That goalie could have been had. He was shakey and out of position alot. Tripp made it sound like we ran into a 'hot' goalie there at the end, but he didn't look very hot to me, only the boys in red/white didn't bring the effort like they have been.

Yes. I noted that in one of the game threads oh, about 4-6 weeks ago. Makes me want to drink HARD LIQUOR that I don't drink. The pointing. Friggin Kills Me. But you left out a step: point, chop, tackle, take a penalty & then bark at the ref with your mouth guard dangling while you're spitting at him.

I can hear his sorry a** all the way up in row XX where my normal seats are in 121, every damn game OVER THE NOISE. It's become a source of comedy with our row because I had pointed it out to the gal tha sits directly next to me and she started "zeroing in on him" and then told our little group of friends that sit to her right, and I kid you not, everytime there's a rush, or something goes askew and #4 is on the ice, they all shout "Hey Socal, here he comes get ready!" :ticked:

So on Saturday night, when we were sitting in the first row in 121, It was just flipping annoying at how much worse it is to see it all up close and personal.

KF, agreed on Tripp's Delauriers commentary. he's not a HOT goalie, in fact he's been cold for a MONTH. Um Tripp, let's not pump the tires when our team should have and could have played better. Grrr.

I think A. Ward is playing "Where's Waldo" while he is out there and he is saying "there he is, no wait, there he is, up there he awwww f*%$, they scored again. My bad guys."

I did not realize that Oilers had lost 20 of their previous 21 games entering the game last night. Now I feel even crappier that our guys lost to them.

^Yep. December 30th was their last win.

Last weekend I was joking around with my dad saying how the Oilers have yet to win a game in 2010. Said it would be perfect if they continued to lose every game until they play us.

I was only joking, but guess the joke was on me.

Well, the things the Canes are good at:

1. Getting that elusive 1st goal
2. Getting that elusive 1st shutout (not that Cam can get one :()
3. Breaking a goalless streak.

Did I miss anything? ;)

No, it is even worse then that, they had only won 1 game since 11 Dec.
