Maniscalco just asked Forslund about taking his boots and chaps with him to Calgary, saying Chuck had mentioned them in a previous interview.

Forslunds response: "Have you ever seen Charles line dance? Because I have, and let me tell you, it's not a pretty sight."

LMAO, when I saw E's post earlier this morning that was my first reaction and with the same descriptions.

So... I was listening to the coach's post practice comments (http://auction.nhl.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/ProductDisplay?prrfnbr=113017658&prmenbr=12717464&aunbr=113364368)... He spent time talking to the Calgary press about their recent acquisitions from Toronto since he has familiarity with them, and he gave mad props to both Brandon Sutter and Brett Carson for their contributions of late. He was very coy about who could be back in the lineup tomorrow night, saying it could be one, two, or three of the injured returning but definitely at least one of the three. Not sure if he was purposefully vague or whether reality is that each is still very much a game-time decision.

Chip must have listened to it too because he tweeted the following:

ice_chip: Maurice says Canes will have 20-man lineup for Flames. Not saying who No. 20 will be.

Trying to divine which quote from the coach he'll regurgitate next.

And the mystery 20th roster player for tomorrow is......Steven Goertzen. Congratulations if he was your guess for today's minor roster move.

Haven't seen confirmation from any other source yet, official or unofficial.

Weird that I got Chip's tweet from earlier today but didn't get this one. Hear the Canes are putting something out as we speak.

I recognize his name from training camp but other than that don't know anything about him and haven't really heard his name mentioned among the Albany peeps.

ETA: River Rats (http://www.albanyriverrats.com/news/latest/index.html?article_id=2022) have posted a link from Facebook. Word is he'll be in a fourth-line role.

RALEIGH, NC—Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has recalled right wing Steven Goertzen (GUHRT-sehn) from the Albany River Rats of the American Hockey League.

This marks Goertzen’s first NHL recall this season. The 25-year-old Stony Plain, Alb., native has notched six goals and earned seven assists (13 points) in 45 AHL games with the River Rats in this, his sixth full professional season. Goertzen (6’2”, 216 lbs.) has played in 62 career NHL games with Columbus and Phoenix, and earned his first NHL points (2g, 2a) in 2008-09 with the Coyotes, including his first NHL goal on Feb. 7, 2009, against Carolina. The Blue Jackets drafted Goertzen in the seventh round, 225th overall, in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft. He signed with Carolina as a free agent on July 8, 2009.

Steven Goertzen is basically just a 4th line eat some minutes foward. Good size, physical, will scrap from time to time. 13 points on the year and +1.

Chip tweets:

ice_chip: Defenseman Joe Corvo probable for Flames game tomorrow, coach Paul Maurice says. Erik Cole may return against Buffalo on Friday.

and

ice_chip: It will be next week before Tuomo Ruutu will play, Maurice says.

Not surprised about Tuomo, but hope he isn't being optimistic about next week.

So wonder who makes room for Corvo?

And give Chip credit, he might have actually talked to Maurice on these items instead of just listening to audio replays.

And weird, I got his tweet to my phone at 3:51 about the mystery 20th player, then didn't get the last three via text even though I'm getting tweets from everyone else I follow. Wonder if he got pissed at me for dissing him in my previous post?

Goertzen solves the LaRose fill in, but something still has to be done if Corvo plays tomorrow. I don't see them taking the chance and putting Carson on waivers, from the sounds of it, they feel he's earned the right to stay up.

Ruutu makes his comeback on his bobblehead night like Chad ;)

If they send Carson down when they activate Corvo, he doesn't go through waivers because it was an emergency callup. At any other point, he'd have to be waived to be sent to Albany.

If they're going to keep Carson when Corvo is activated, I think they can put LaRose on IR to free up the 23rd roster spot. If they make it retroactive, he'd be eligible to come off before the next home game. So Goertzen plays tomorrow, flies to Buffaltucky with the team and heads back to Albany. Cole comes out of the pressbox, but he's already on the roster. So we play the Slugs and Fishsticks with 22 on the roster and activate LaRose next Tuesday to be the 23rd player.

Well, today's a new day, and it's game day. So to get away from the whole who's coming/going thing, and it appears we have the roster "in place" for tonight; I decided to mosey on over to the opponents side, given how they just blew up their team. EDM's papers seemed to be more resigned to the whole it's over for us deal and there didn't seem to be much to yak about- well in CGY, it's a whole other deal:

Can ya'll even imagine this happening to our team leaders?

the $6-million remaining on Kotalik’s deal being the item that has people frantically grabbing for any available smelling salts.

^ Also from the Sun:

Given the state of the Flames at the moment, this may not be the best time for a Sutter family reunion, but THIS (http://www.calgarysun.com/sports/hockey/2010/02/03/12719921-sun.html) has some nice bits about Lil' Brandon's first trip to Calgary.

And, I never get tired of hearing Brent talk about his kid:
"I'm a dad -- I watch him a lot," Sutter said. "My son plays for the Carolina Hurricanes, so obviously I'm a fan of that organization and that team -- I'm not going to BS you about that ... "

Thanks Toast, I was just gonna come back in and post! I don't know how I missed that article, then saw it when I clicked on another.

Brent Sutter may be a bad*** NHL coach, but he's made it clear when it comes to his boy, he's all about his son. I remember that Dad's weekend in FLA when he was sorta "undercover" or just trying to lay low, but also how proud he was/is of his son Brandon and rightfully so; I could feel his pain when he said he really didn't like having his team have to go up against his son's team, that first game we played vs NJ.

My knowledge of waivers and the many different situations is shaky but I think if Brett had been called up on an emergency basis, he would have to go back to Albany once the player he replaced was activated. Since he's still with the team, I'm guessing he'd have to go through the regular waiver process which IMO, we can't risk with him. And if I recall correctly, Rodney was the first one up after Joe went down.

So it sounds like it's a matter of a) a deal getting done or b) we finally get the guts to scratch Aaron Ward (who has been better lately, but seriously - if anyone sits it should be him).

KaniacFever
02-03-2010, 04:37 PM
^I was just coming to say what are the chances we sit AWard's butt in the press box. He should be the first one there. Then I think about the loyalty we show people and say it'll be Carson. Then I remembered, if they can scratch the former Captain, why the hell can't they sit AWard where be belongs.

ETA: As for the whole Carson thing. I thought it was more to do with the cap. Aren't we right up against the cap and if we activated Corvo with Carson still here we would go over. Hence putting Ruutu on IR. Then again, the whole waiver and CBA is a big ol head scratcher to me. I can never keep things right.

According to what Forslund said on the air Monday, Carson was the emergency recall for Corvo. He could have gone back without clearing waivers when Corvo was activated. Since that didn't happen, Carson would have to clear waivers now to go back. My sense is that he's here to stay. And if he's here to stay, he should be in the lineup, so Ward should head to the pressbox.

Somebody had to either 1)go to Albany or 2)go on IR to accomodate Corvo's activation. With Goertzen coming up, we were at 23 on the roster. I don't know about the cap implications, but we did have to make another roster move.

I was just coming to say what are the chances we sit AWard's butt in the press box.

I hope you're not driving or listening to Forslund on the radio- Nicky Wallin is the healthy scratch.

They were chattering and speculating that there is an interest in #7, and "who knows" something could be brewing.

I'm personally stunned it's #7. Get rid of Aaron Ward JR. I'm just tired of seeing his face. A really cool Finnish guy once said Enough is Enough.

I posted in the trade thread, and it's all over Twitter about Wallin- and speculation from Dreger & James Duthie indicates he's waived his NTC and JR's brewing a deal with SJ.

C-girl, Both Dreger and Bob McK have documented that SJ has had an interest in #7. Those two are the most reliable of all the talkers (notice all the RT's of Dreger's tweet, lol)

This time of year is hard with (almost) no matter who goes, but especially if it was one of the guys from the 06 Cup Crew. I will never forget being in the suite right up behind the net when Wallin knocked in the OT winner in Game 2 vs. NJ in 2006 and watching him slide up on the glass... sniff...

02-03-2010, 07:08 PM
Oh I know they're reliable. I trust everything they say. I was just wondering how they got it. Everybody else is copying them. BTW I got Bob McK's book for Christmas and I loved it, in case anybody's looking for a good hockey book to read. I got Boudreau's book too and I liked it.

SoCalcaniac
02-03-2010, 07:44 PM
C-girl thanks for that recommendation on Bob McK's book! I have a pile of books that still need to be read from my Christmas gifts, but that one I have a real interest in. I like McKenzie.

My theory on those two -- they have connections with all 30 teams. (not those faux, popcorn popper types that Perez Ecklund utilizes) I think they have certain GM's (including ours) who leak bits to them, and then they kind of piece it out til they're ready to do a deal. It's just my own hunch, but those two are very trusted in hockey circles, and I don't think it's just hunches.

Greetings from downtown DC, where I'm here a little unexpectedly. I WAS in the car, and I DID just about run off the road when I heard the folks talking about it on XM204 as if it were close to a done deal, then started getting the tweets. I was thinking something might be up when Corvo was activated with no word on Carson being sent back down. Bummer that it's Nic. I was strolling down memory lane in the car on the way up here thinking about all the Secret Weapon stories. And you KNOW this is a tough situation for him to go through personally. :(

They said Brindy went to the locker room for repairs, but Staal is back out. Boy - he's dripping from both his cheek and his lip - blood on his jersey.

LTD - Joni's skate kinda bounced off Jussi's helmet and then hit Staal's cheekbone - but it was more like a really close shave that broke the skin right on his cheekbone rather than slicing him - thanks god.

We should have an extra extra pissed Staal with having got hit in the face not once, not twice but three times.

lol - Tripp brings out "definity".

Not calling anyone "wussies", but the game is an emotional one and I don't doubt that things like Wallin not playing, being down 1 D, and Staal and Brindy bleeding left and right tends to distract you just a bit. And in a game like this, that's more than enough to be "off".

Well, They're bleeding are reeling. Lovely.

I love how Forslund says "you really don't want to see this again" (on the Staal skate to the face) and they show it in super slo mo.

This is what CGY does. If you watch enough of their games (meaning if you can stomach them, they tend to be a choppy, nonsensical affair with dumbass penalties taken at every turn) this is how they go. You (the opposition) have to fight through it. We appear unable/incapable of doing that tonight, and I'm of E's mindset that we're all distracted and in freakout mode.

Alberts is probably concussed. I personally didn't like the hit. Hope Rod's eye/face wherever, is ok. I'm betting tomorrow #12's face will be bruised up good. I had a skateboarding accident when I was about 12 that literally scraped the skin right off the left side of my face which caught some pebbles, some bits of glass that type of stuff, which didn't really hurt all that bad, it was more shocking than anything, til the next morning when I woke up and it looked like I was in a boxing match. He looked a little bruised up already, what with that fair skin of his.

When you get 8 PP's and don't do much with any of them, do you really deserve to win?

Maybe we can have some semblance of actually playing this period. We look worse than we did in EDM. Not holding my breath.

"Biohazard Waste" That'd be a good name for a band.

The hockey gods have come back to reap the blood of the Flames now.

I may have the homer goggles on but I like the 3 minutes I've seen of Goertzen so far.

that spontaneous bleeding from the eyes is a result of watching this team tr to pass after watching the chicago game and knowing what they're capable of.

I'm just hoping that at least part of the team makes it off the ice without needing gurneys.

If we didn't know better, you'd think this was the oft hyped "Battle of Alberta". All this bleeding, injuries and crazy things happening.

We have no friggin connection to CGY-- really zero, as far as playoffs, anything. Yet, this is how it looks when CGY/EDM play each other.

I'm curious to see what's in it. I've never ventured over to the Teeter for a sandwich, but I might just have to for Timmy's ;)

Grilled chicken, lettuce, tomato, mayo, mustard, pickle on wheat bread. He was describing it to ChuckandtheletterK in the intermission interview the other night.

Yes, I lost my radio feed 1/2 hour ago and I'm ignoring the tweet about the empty-netter hat trick.

Maybe I'm in the minority, but if my team is going to lose, it's at least nice to see a gritty player like Glencross get a hatter -- I mean, all things being equal, final still 4-1, I'd rather Glencross get 3 than it be more spread.

Until this point, I wasn't ready for any trades (except for AWard who I wanted to go way back in November) but after this performance I have come to terms with it. Bring 'em on.

Is this the Hurricanes "Making Dreams Come True" tour? We show up to be the Oilers' slump buster and end their losing streak. Next we go to Calgary and hand a player his first NHL hat trick. What can we do for Buffalo?

Did anyone else feel like Calgary played the whole game with an extra skater or two on the ice? They were all over us with 2 and 3 Forecheckers all the time. One time, I thought I noticed more, and we actually got past them and there was still 2 d-men back.

I know that was an exceptionally bad game for a team that has been playing better of late, but if any of our upcoming opponents watched that, they have a recipe for a win.

Geez, the WC is amazingly aggressive, both on the puck and the man.

And don't forget how we're about to provide support players for every other team in the league's playoff run as they pick us dry.
