Sorry for the delay. I spent the morning in the hospital. Just got home. Worst attack of sciatica, yet. My back is totally locked-up. I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy (and yes, that even includes Sabres fans). Had to go in my p.j.'s. Having excruciating pain in my lower right back that radiates down my right leg all the way to my knee. I almost passed-out in the hospital from the pain (if any of y'all are prayer warriors, please pray for the pain to subside for me. Thanx)

Anyhoo.... enough about me....

After a nice, feel-good win, it'd be nice to grab another two points from these guys. They did it last week at home-- no reason they can't tonight!

Puck-drop at 7:00PM

LET'S GO 'CANES!!

(now off to begin my Prednisone, Bacoflen, Vicodine cocktail, and try to see if I can actually get lower body enough to be able to lie down!)

Wow CL! Glad you're back home, but yikes! It all sounds so painful.

Canes, win this for Pete Dawg and his 1st NHL start AND Canesluver who's been through the ringer. Big hug and hope you're feeling better SOON.

The sun is trying to peek out on this side of Apex. I'm heading out just because I'm getting ill from the gloom.

Oh dear lord, CL! So sorry to hear about your continued back troubles! :( I hope you're able to get some relief.

Thanks, all! Mr. CL says I'm having sympathy pains for Cam!

And speaking of back troubles (http://www.wralsportsfan.com/hurricanes/story/6976787/) and oh dear lord... sounds like he needs some sympathy pains.

The upper body injury to Canes goalie Cam Ward is significantly worse than expected. Carolina Hurricanes TV play by play voice John Forslund has told 99.9FM the Fan ESPN radio that Ward has a fairly significant back injury and will be evaluated early this week by a specialist. It is not known how long Ward will be out, but it appears that it will be a larger amount of time than anticipated.

Ward suffered a back injury during last years Eastern Conference Finals against Pittsburgh, but this injury is not thought to be related.

Ward missed 13 games earlier this after he was cut on the leg by Rick Nash's skate blade in Columbus on November 7. Since returning Ward had played his best hockey appearing in 23 straight games before being sent back to Raleigh before the game in Buffalo on Friday. Ward has a record 14-21-5 this year with a 2.74 GAA in 41 games this season.

From Branecky (http://hurricanes.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=516562):

Goaltender Cam Ward will see a specialist on Monday to determine the extent of a back injury, the Hurricanes confirmed today.

The team says that the ailment, which coach Paul Maurice said "stiffened up" after the team’s loss in Calgary Wednesday, is not related to the back issue that first appeared during the 2009 Eastern Conference Finals and again flared up during Team Canada’s Olympic Orientation camp in August.

Ward is still officially listed as day-to-day, but that could change depending on the results of Monday’s examination. Backup Manny Legace earned the win in Buffalo on Friday night, while Justin Peters, the Canes’ second-round pick in 2004 who recently played in the American Hockey League All-Star Game, is expected to get his first NHL start tonight against the New York Islanders.

I've lived in Brooklyn for about 4 years but I'm from Durham. I've been following the canes since they moved to the triangle. I usually get to see them play a few times a year. I prefer Islanders games to Rangers games the fans are friendlier and I don't feel threatened wearing my Jersey. I do miss the RBC however.

Actually we have season tickets for it. So no game for me. However, I will check in here at the intermission. I just woke up! 4 solid hours of sleep (with 2 dogs asleep beside me) has helped! And can I say-- so glad to have my BB cause I can surf the 'Net flat on my back.

So-- Pete Dawg is starting, eh? I'm excited for him, but kinda was hoping to see more Manny. I wonder if there was time to get JP's parents to New York? I wonder where "home" is to him?

Oh, Doug-- is Grant Llewellyn conducting? We used to go to a lot more of NC Symphony. Love Meymandi Hall. Have fun!

Glad you're feeling better, CL!

Justin is from Blyth, Ontario. He actually has the word "Blyth" painted on his mask, I remember seeing it in some of my pictures and thinking it might be someone's name, then learned it's where he's from.

I guess with Cam's injury seemingly worse than originally anticipated, we might actually see him get a start in net here at home depending on how tonight goes.

I think a few of the Albany regulars are going to try to get down to Nassau to see him tonight - hope they make it!

BrooklynCaniac - Have a blast! Will be looking for you. Doug have fun at the Symphony. I have yet to be able to drag Mr. Socal to the Symphony, but have been a few times as a girls nite out and it's fantastic.

I do hope JP's parents/family were able to get down for the game. It's always so special for a 1st NHL game, hopefully it happened for him.

We were out running errands and I was checking updates on #30. To say this is worrisome, is an understatement. Especially the "this injury is different from the injury sustained at the Olympic Camp" Oh, so there are multiple injuries from different situations. That makes me feel real good.

The Canes tweeted that #12 could break Stillman's point streak record tonight. Let's have that as a bright spot and a win for Pete Dawg.

LTD,so ther are Albany peeops making the trip to Long Island? Hope they get there safely.

CL, good to hear you're doing better. Hang in there!

How fun! I hope your "glass seats" at Nassau are better than the ones I ended up with a couple of years back. They were promoted as "on the glass" and were indeed Row A but ended up being about 10 feet from the glass due to the way seating is arranged there.

This Cam back issue is really starting to worry me. It's becoming a chronic issue and regardless if this is the same pain or same area as the one from last spring and Olympic camp, it's still part of the back and I don't see how it can possibly not be connected in some way. If they need to rehab him for the rest of the season then they need to just do it. This season is lost as it is and there's no reason to not get him to 100%.

CL, I hope you get to feeling better quickly!

I am ready to go meet Joni at the airport and throttle HIM. He's driving me NUTS.

Pete Dawg looks good to me. He's battling and looking good.

I completely lost sight of the puck on that Dwyer goal, I thought it was Brandon's until the replay.

Who me?

Y'all probably have heard the story before, but a few days before the '04 draft we ordered take out from PF Changs. When we got there, we had to wait for a bit. We noticed 2 huge kids with a guy in a suit. It seemed like such an odd threesome (and one of the kids was wearing plastic man slides, lol). So I started eavesdropping and heard the suited man say something about "toronto" and "combine" and confirmed in my mind it was draftees. So when our stuff was ready (they were waiting for a table) I turned and said "good luck on Saturday" and there turned Justin Peters with his curly mop of blonde hair and those big wide eyes and he looked stunned and said "thank you".

Of course, at that time I had no idea who he was but when the Canes selected him, we realized it was one of the kids at PF Changs. So I feel like I was the first Caniac to ever speak to him.

SouthernHockeyChick

LOL, great story.

When I read it to Mr SHC he mentioned that he was the first Caniac to put his arm around Peters.

We won that special edition draft jersey (signed by a few of our draftees) at the STH party they had sometime that weekend and when he went up on stage to get the jersey they had him stand with the players and took his pic. He was so excited about winning he just threw his arm around the guys.

That's right! Mr SHC and I were standing at the back of our little group and he won his jersey shortly before I won that bottle of wine (with Staal, Cam, and Ladd's sigs). I remember being so jealous about him winning because our numbers were so close together and then I won just a few minutes later.

I had to collect myself from my bawling situation after that interview with Peters; and then he says "Cam Ward texted me" :wah:Peters was so emotional -- I kept saying Tripp let him go. On top of being winded, he's bubbling over.

Beautiful picture!

I was just listening to Forslund on the post game on 99.9. When MM asked him about Cam, he said "It's very concerning and I'm just gonna leave it at that until he sees the specialist". I'm really trying not to get all worked up, but how many times can someone say the situation is "concerning"?

Tonight was such a feel good situation. Just so worried about Cam.

OK, Hub is flipping across the dials on CI, and he stopped on the Thrash/FL game, Ya'll are gonna laugh or die; The "broadcast" was the jumbotron feed with the radio announcers as the audio! The pic is all grainy, they're showing the players leave the ice (Thrash win 4-2) and they're playing all these commercials while the players take their bow in the 3 stars; there is a girl from "Thrashers TV" that's interviewing the first star (newly traded Nic Berfors), but you can't hear that audio because the radio broadcast is on! I am dying laughing it looks like a middle school production. HILARIOUS. But I give them an A for effort to get it on TV.

Yay for Pete Dawg :nanner:
So i'm glad i'm not the only one that got a bit teary eyed for the kid. I was just waiting for him to start bawling. What an awesome moment for him and his parents. Glad they were able to make it.

Road trip started out bad, but glad it had a winning end.

If I was a player, I don't think I would want to go up against Sutter/Boychuk/Dwyer. Those 3 seem like a pain in the a$$

ETA: As for Cam, shut him down for the season. We aren't making the playoffs, so no reason to make the condition worse. Let him have ample time to heal, cause we are going to need him next year.

nccanes
02-06-2010, 10:12 PM
It's really puzzling about Cam. Wasn't Forslund on after the game last night saying he'd figure Cam would want to be play by the end of this home stand? Obviously the tone has changed rather dramatically.

So - presuming Cam is out (and why not regardless of how serious it is - give the kid 3 full weeks off), I guess we'll get to see Peters at home too!

Should be a fun night on Tuesday since it looks to be a full house!

From Chris Botta's Islander's blog:

Minus: After his assist to give Carolina a 2-1 lead, Sutter - the son of former Islanders captain and Cup-winner Brent Sutter - hears his name pronounced over the Coliseum PA as “Suter.”

SoCalcaniac
02-06-2010, 10:23 PM
Yeah E, the tone Forslund had yesterday was far different from today. That's where I'm just shaking my head. The worse part is the way he was trying to be 'cautious' but then you could hear the seriousness in his voice. It just makes your mind go all over the daggone place.

So, we have a good thing to look forward to with the full house on Tuesday. I'm glad for that especially after the last game before this road trip being surrounded by 6,800 of my closest friends. Maybe Pete Dawg gets the start in front of the home fans?

Minus: After his assist to give Carolina a 2-1 lead, Sutter - the son of former Islanders captain and Cup-winner Brent Sutter - hears his name pronounced over the Coliseum PA as “Suter.”We heard that LOUD and clear during the game, and I said to hub, Surely to GAWD the person they hire to work as their announcer would know that "Suter" is Brent the Former Islander's Captain's son and IT'S FRIGGIN SUTTER. Just when one thinks Brian Hoyle is the biggest toolbox on the planet, you get that. GEEZ, and yes, a total minus and completely EMBARASSING.

SO happy for Pete Dawg. :) The interview absolutely killed me. You could tell how much that moment and the night meant to him. Thank goodness his parents and brother were able to get there. I was pleased. He didn't show the nerves that you know had to be there.

I'm worried about Cam. Best case scenario, it's something that simply needs rest and with the situation we're in, he can get it. Shut him down for the season and give him a good six months to heal whatever it might be. There's absolutely no reason to push any kind of injury.
