Oops almost forgot! Unfortunately CL is still down for the count (send your positive vibes her direction), so....

We welcome #17 on the Devils to the RBC, how odd it will be to see Kovy in a Devils uniform. Does het get to play the entire 2 minutes on the PP for the Devils?

We won't see our #8 out there, so I guess our lines and PP and PK units get a makeover.

We get to send off our Olympians and I will gladly join in a well timed Ju-ssi Ju-ssi chant!

Let's Go Canes!

Obviously very excited for the send-off and will be proudly sporting the jersey of one of our Olympians. I wasn't at the send-off in 2006, so what to expect in terms of pomp and circumstance?

And I will lustily participate in a Jussi chant. I'm sure there are many deserving players, but I'd love to see him get the Steve Chiasson award this year.

I have nothing more to add than DITTO DITTO DITTO!

I just love how we do the Jussi chant. As a looong time Jussi fan I literally got teary eyed when that happened the first time last season.

Since the Canes are challenged in the "pomp & circumstance" dept., don't expect a ton--- however, in 2006, they unveiled "banners" of each of the olympians going to Torino (inlcuding a banner for Peter who of course coached Team USA) I loved the banners- I hope to gosh people do a long and CRAZY-a** JUSSI chant just to make a POINT. It is an abomination that he is not on Team Finland. When someone can tell me what value that washed up Ville Peltonen adds to Finland, then I'll STFU. Until then...... I hope the Jussi chant goes for 5 minutes. ;)

I'm all for a Jussi chant and will wholeheartedly join in but I hope it's AFTER the Olympians have been honored and acknowledged by the fans. I wouldn't want them to be shortchanged.

I'm in for a Jussi chant.

LTD I have a request. If they drop the banners like they did in 2006, could I ask for a picture of all banners. I'm bringing my camera but i'm not nearly as talented as you, plus my camera ain't all that great. I would most appreciate it.

Its going to be so weird to NOT see #8. I wonder if Picard makes it into the states to play and if so, does AWard finally sit.

02-12-2010, 07:23 PM
According to Branecky, they don't know if Picard will make it for this game:

Since Picard is a foreign citizen coming from a foreign country, it is unclear if he will be able to join the Hurricanes in time for Saturday’s game against New Jersey. Just as Jiri Tlusty (http://hurricanes.nhl.com/club/player.htm?id=8473482) did, Picard will have to go through the potentially-complicated immigration process.

That could prevent coach Paul Maurice from having to make a lineup decision, as Picard’s inclusion would make one of the Canes’ defensemen a healthy scratch. After Saturday there will be little rush, as the team will be off until March 2 due to the Olympic break.

Couple things.

I absolutely and unequivocally agree with c-girl that the Jussi chant should NOT take away from the ceremony of the other players being honored.

KF, I'll happily do what I can to get the banners as they're unfurling and also plan to get plenty of shots of all three of them once they're up.

Picard's game status is obviously up in the air, but we're also short a forward. According to the ch.com depth chart Boychuk's in the vacant forward roster spot, but I don't know if that decision has already been made to call him up or if they put him in a slot because the depth chart doesn't allow a blank field.

To be clear on my post; I wasn't advocating upstaging the Olympians selected. I was advocating joining in on something that happens after the banners got unfurled (That was pretty much the extent of any "ceremony" iirc)

I think it's just as well that Picard may not make it; Cause think about it, someone would have to be scratched. While I believe it should be Aaron Ward, we all know that won't happen-- so I'd just as soon allow the braintrust to figure it out during the break, and not upset the so called apple cart.

It would be cool. I thought Saturday was the last day for games, but there are some on Sunday. They were saying that everyone should be there by midnight Monday. First games are on Tuesday. Not much time for practice.

LOL I was thinking three countries, not four flags. How could I forget we'll have two Finn flags in the rafters. *facepalm*

I'll be watching this one from the comfort of my couch in Rocky Mount. I've been on a 5 day tour of NC thanks to the Hurricanes (Hurricanes U and 2 games this week) and the United States Postal Service. I can use a day of not driving and sitting on my duff. My daughter and her boyfriend will be the sd representatives for the evening.

Hate that I'm going to miss the Olympic banner thing. I really wasn't thinking of that when I made my decision to stay home. I don't think I'll tell my daughter at this point that I've changed my mind.

Kovalchuk finally scored his first goal as a Devil last night. Given his history and penchant for scoring goals against us, let's see if we can reverse that now that he plays for NJ.

Last time it "snowed" was vs CHI and we went over to Backyard Bistro before the game and then walked across the street to go in for the game. Mr. Socal thinks it should be some sort of "tradition" now since we got a great result. Since I'm personally sick and tired of these little snow events, I'm hoping by game time, there will be very little of it left for me to even think about it. But I'm doubting that will happen, so I guess it's BB.

It'll be nice to see Boychuk in the lineup again tonight; Although it will be awfully strange not seeing #8 out there.

Hey, Dave. I forgot to tell you I have pictures of you graduating the other night. I'll get them to you sometime over the Olympic break.

There's very little snow out on the roads already, just mainly wet, and the sidewalks are cleared at the RBCC, at least they are over on the West side since they had the STH pre-game skates today. Tonight shouldn't be an issue at all, except the extra caution leaving tonight with the potential for ice.

I was kinda hoping to catch the Devils pre-game since it was open to the STHs but they cancelled their practice and didn't skate.

Nothing remarkable to report from our skate this morning. All present and accounted for except for Boychuk who's on his way. Scott Walker was his stand-in, he and Cole (still in yellow) stayed late for extra conditioning.

Timmy was trying out his Team USA gloves.

I'll yell the Jussi chant from the rafters. Will have to make sure the batteries in the camera are charged. Can't wait for tonight. I'm sure Tuomo, Joni, Eric and Timmy will have great games tonight and Jussi will get a hat trick to prove the Fins they really screwed up this time. And go Pete-Dawg! I hope Cammy will talk to him before the game and remind him that Marty's just a guy and he can beat him just as well as Cam did his first time. :)

Thank you very much. For those of you that haven't done Hurricanes U, you gotta do it. It's a blast. It's a ton of fun. Chuck K did the "classroom" part along with the video coach and Jiri Tlusty. Tripp Tracy and Brett Carson were the "names" for the on ice night. The classroom part was good, but the on ice night was great. Facing off at center ice of the RBC, dropping sticks and squaring off with Stormy, digging for pucks in the corner with a friend, scoring on a 12 year old...oh yeah, it was all good.

They didn't have anybody at my talent level. There was a kid about 12 that showed up with his goalie gear. I went top shelf on him. Even a blind squirel finds a nut from time to time.

I didn't have any gloves to drop so I just dropped my stick. Stormy dropped his and we started circling until one of us lost balance and almost fell. He didn't want a piece of me anyway. He looked a little relieved.

Pretty amazing here...4-0 Canes and chased Marty again.

Still a great effort by Pete Dawg.

Parting ways with players is part of the game, but I truly will miss Ray Whitney on this team come March 3. I truly hope it is just a rental and we resign him in July so he can retire a Hurricane. Which ever team lands him will be very lucky.

I count us 9 back from Montreal; with 2 games in hand and 2 games head-to-head. So "in theory" 1 point to make up to catch them. (And, again, of course the other teams behind them not doing much...)

If you'd have told me after Edmonton and Calgary and Cam being sent to Raleigh that we'd be riding a 5-game win streak heading into the Olympics... outscoring our opponents 20 to 10... I'd ask you to pull the other one.

And apparently I was on TV at some point as my Finland jersey was being talked about. Atleast that's what the 100 texts (ok i'm exaggerting) told me. :D

Pete Dawg is looking pretty good as an NHL goalie.

I really don't even like Maniscalco; I think he's a parrot, HOWEVER, I do agree with him on the whole just enjoy this hockey team for what it is, and forget about trades and making the playoffs. ENOUGH.

That was a great game. Great send-off for our Olympians (loved all the ovations and wild cheering--- )I loved the wild cheer for Gleason, and the U-S-A- chants and I love how it kept building by each unveiling. Great job by the Caniacs.

There is no better party than a chase-a-Marty Party in this life. SO fun to see this team deal with the horsecrap ref'ing by Stephane Auger and his bunch( anyone else see him "talking" or should I say barking at Stephane Yelle? you'd think he'd learn his lesson and not be talking to players, jackass) and fight through some seriously sh**** penalty calls and then take over the game. We were under the puck the whole night- we were skating with a purpose and woo-hoo for #11! We were leaving the house tonight and hub had his Boychuk black jersey on and he points to it and says "He's scoring tonight and Sutter is setting it up" and sure enough...... it finally happened. GREAT goal. That kid is coming into his own. He has that chemistry with #16 and I love #15 on that line. He's like their protector and all that body banging, lol.

Sundevil- Yeah, I know you're surprised that Aaron Ward was out of position on a goal.:lol:;)

If this is the last game we see #13 in, I can be "happy" for that. But dang will I be sad when the trigger gets pulled.

The Juice can be an American any day. Burke would find a spot for him. :-

What a great way to cap off the week, and go into the Olympic break.

This is why we love hockey. it's that simple. I refuse to go back to Oct/Nov/Dec because that would surely drive me bananas. I've had to let it go because it's just so painful.

We turned it off just after Forslund left. I missed it! Are they chartering a plane? or going commercial? I have always found when hub and I travel home to socal, we usually leave here at 6 or 6:30am and it "feels" like we have the whole day when we land in San Diego. They should be fine, but it's early.

Jeff Marek on CBC just said that Crosby & Fleury were jet-pooling & "picking up" Nash, Seabrook & Keith in Columbus tomorrow after their game vs NSH.

Get this- CBC had this lengthy list of all the Team Canada players and PJ Stock was asserting that 'they have their minds on Vancouver' and cited Marty getting pulled here tonight, and the Thornton/Heatley/Marleau troika being a combined minus 5. OK Canada, we're getting a little too deep with this.

LTD- I've come to the conclusion that we're good at getting The Wave going (see: tonight) but chants are not really our forte. :0

Don't know how they're flying, Timmy just mentioned the time when they aired his audio interview. Probably a good idea not to mention carriers since I know some folks who would probably show up at the airport (no, FTR I'm not one of them).

And the video tributes were nice but I had kinda hoped they would introduce the Olympians during player introductions instead of doing something during the TV timeouts when folks might not be paying attention.

I had seen the banners during warmups so I knew my sight line wasn't going to be good, had to truck all the way around to club level on the other side to get decent shots but I did take good pictures of the banners and will post them on flickr as soon as I get everything downloaded (which is, of course, taking awhile).

Can we make him a US citizen by next week?

I know it was said in jest, but according to IIHF rules, he is ineligible to compete in any sanctioned event for any other country, since he already represented Finland in a sanctioned event.

But how in hell can you take the older Ruutu brother or Ville freakin' Peltonen and leave Jussi off the team?

SoCalcaniac
02-13-2010, 11:38 PM
I didn't expect #6 to mention what flight or airline, that'd be a little much; I'm more curious if they'd all jet-pool like the others.

The tribute played out just like I thought it would, it was exactly like it was in 2006. Not one ounce different. Doing a thing during player intros would be a bit innovative for this org.

E, that's an excellent picture of Boychuk's goal!

Hub has a co-worker who texted him and said he "thinks" he has the shot of #15 gathering up the puck for Boychuk. He's going to have to sort through his pics; he has season seats in 125.

Oh I knew that wasn't what you meant. Just launching a preemptive strike against anyone who might think I was headed out there.

Regarding the Olympic recognition, it was a nice gesture for them to mention the Devils on the Olympic roster too.

Hey, slightly off topic, but during the two-week break are they actually taking the ice up? We noticed the glass was coming down as we were leaving, and I just checked the RBCC Webcam (http://www.rbccenter.com/default.asp?RBCcenter=204) and that's what it looks like.

SoCalcaniac
02-13-2010, 11:43 PM
Mr. Socal noticed they were feverishly taking down the glass and thought what the heck is happening tomorrow that they're working so fast.

I wanna say in 2006 they did the same thing during the break- I remember how when we came back for that fist game, the ice was pristine- painted and all that jazz. It makes sense as I type this, it dawns on me; it's because the CIRCUS IS COMING. That requires the ice to come up.

Ya'll this Canadian Olympian watch thing is making me laugh. The fact that they're tracking how guys are doing in advance of getting to VAN and if their heads "are in it" is insane; they really do need to shut up about all this Team Canada hockey. They have enough pressure. Mark Lee of CBC just asked Bobby Ryan what he's looking forward to for Team USA and VAN; Ryan: "we're down 3-1 to CGY, I'm not looking forward to anything, except winning this game". Gee whiz guys. Maybe there is something to syncing up the stop of NHL hockey to coincide with the Olympics. They're too caught up in this!

Actually it was everyone's favorite defenseman (Ward) who got the puck from the ref for Boychuk.

Props to Gleason for stopping and signing autographs after the game considering he has a 6AM flight. He left but came back about twenty minutes later and went back in the arena. As he was leaving the fans started chanting "TEAM USA, TEAM USA!" so he pulled over and signed for everyone.

At first I didn't know who got the goal, until I saw Ruutu chasing down the refs and linesmen looking for the puck.

And Boychuk's BFF, Sutter, looked just as excited for Boychuk as he did for his 1st NHL goal. I love these guys. And those two are gonna be something else next year playing together.

My daughter and her boyfriend will be the sd representatives for the evening.

Where they on the glass in section 110 SD? I saw a hat that looked familur down there.

Also LTD I assume you sit in seciton 118? That is quite the workout you get during games...

I don't think that was them. I told her that one of the conditions of getting free tickets from me was that she had to wear "the hat". She managed to leave home without it.

We just watched the game before we head out for the day- I was the Mouth Guard Chewer that got the puck- #15 was scrambling to the ref thinking he had it; I'm presuming; and what a great pic E- I saw #16 throw his arms around Boychuk the excitement from those two kids was so neat to watch especially since it was all right in front of us.

Tripp had me CRACKING UP in the broadcast. He giggled like a girl during that first goal by #13. That made me howl, and I think made Forslund uncomfortable, lol.

LTD- did you see the gals with the I heart Tripp Tracy homemade tees down on the glass? I couldn't stop laughing when he said he was "going to join them" (BTW, hub kept stopping the TiVo to point out our friend in Team Finland gear and the big camera lens, roving the front row to snap pictures.)

I think I was going to choke when Forslund said that #36 would be "going home to Finland" instead of being in VAN. It's a travesty.

I loved how moved Gleason was by the Ovation from the fans for his USA banner. He said in the post game interview "I don't smile much but that made me smile, I couldn't help it" (really? he doesn't smile?)

Trying not to get too deep- that end of game glove tap, fist bump, "good game" thing --- watching Ray, who we all know goes to meet each guy and say good game to each of them; I saw him doing that from the stands and it looked "normal" further examination on TiVo showed how he was just a little different; really looking at each guy, and saying words to each. Coupled with the 'theme' of JF & Tripp talking about the guys who are going, it just sobered me up and it's like cold water on your head- you realize this was likely the last time he played at home for us. everything else, who even knows.

I LOVE my Team Finland jersey. That being said, it's rather conspicuous. I've now apparently made the broadcast at least two out of three games this week.

I haven't watched the broadcast yet, and I am disappointed that I did not notice the Tripp t-shirts. I'll have to look through my pregame pictures to see if I captured them. I had my "short" lens at warmups last night so I couldn't zoom like I normally do.

I think I read where Jussi's going to go stay with his mom over the break. :(

Couple of things I noticed after the game. First, Jussi ALWAYS ALWAYS does a little behind-the-back fist pump with Ray as he leaves the ice. Last night he grabbed Ray and gave him a big bear hug. The other thing was that Ray always gives a high hand wave to the crowd as he's looking up in the stands where his family sits. Last night he actually clutched his hands open and closed like a child waves bye-bye.

The tribute played out just like I thought it would, it was exactly like it was in 2006. Not one ounce different.

Aw, c'mon....it was completely different. There were totally different players this time.;)

My first-timer friends (who LOVED it, BTW) wanted to go out back after the game and get a close-up look at some of the players. I haven't been back there after a game since June 19, 2006 so, maybe this is normal. But Ray was parked outside so he walked out and he signed and signed and signed until every single person who wanted a moment with him had had it. His wife (and the littlest baby) brought his car around and waited for him right there across the drive from the gaggle of fans. After he finally finished, he got in his truck and they sat there and were still sitting there when we left (we didn't stay too long because my friends were cold). Anyway, I wanted to just throw my arms around him and thank him since it might be my last time seeing him as a Cane but, I restrained myself.

Patrick Dwyer most impressed my friends. He was just really nice and chatty.

Thanks Canes for giving me a pretty exciting game for my newbie friends. I don't think they've ever watched a second of hockey in their life and they loved it. They're talking about getting Checkers tickets now!

I have only been out back to get autographs a few times but every time I did, Ray signed for a long time. Now as for sitting there when he was done, that is usual. Normally, they sign and head on out. I am glad I did not think of going out there last night (or Cullen's last game) because I would have lost it. Especially for Ray.

It's actually rare for Ray to not stop and sign. Last night he and his wife sat there for so long because Ray let the girls stay in line with the fans to get some autographs from the other players. I thought it was very sweet. :)

We all noticed the 'different' Ray after the game. He always gives the fist pump to the guys as they are getting off the ice, but last night a couple of the guys actually gave him a hug. And as he came out for his star, its usually a quick wave up to the family section, but he seemed to continue the wave on even as he turned away from the family section. I knew right then, that was the last home game we see of Whitney.

He gave us one of hell of a game which I'm thankful for, but damn its just going to remind me what we are letting go when he is gone :(

Canes vs. Devils (http://www.flickr.com/photos/jbk-ltd/sets/72157623430627420/)

While we're waiting for Olympic hockey to start... This is a bigger album than I typically like to post these days, but there was a lot going on between the Olympic tributes, trying to snag pictures of Ray, Justin in net, lots of goal celebrations, stuff on the videoboard... banners are at the end.

I took a photo of the videoboard where they posed Joni in front of his Team Finland logo but I didn't include it here because, sigh... they spelled his name wrong.

I was going to ask if anyone here picked up a Valentines t-shirt, I had meant to but had a time conflict. I wasn't as crazy about this year's design, I thought last year's was much better.

Our group grabbed some. Well, actually Rosey12 did the actual grabbing for us. Thankfully the Finn girlfriends did a great job grabbing because with only one trade we all ended up with our favorites. At the very least I can wear it as a layering shirt and the $$ goes to KNC so I'm good with it.

I went down to watch warmups for the first time in ages and was near the corner when the wives/gfs went down the steps (maybe they were done their duty?) and I noticed them all in the Ts. They had the players name/numbers on the back - did the Ts come that way too? I thought they were cute, but they were on very attractive ladies so that helped. I'm  because I, too, noticed the hot girl wearing #15.

Did anyone else notice the "Jersy Divas" some point in the 3rd, sec 109. The one 'diva' went down to the glass, while puck was in play, and put her sign up on the glass. Her 'diva' friend went down to get her b/c security was telling her to get back to her seat.

Tis a shame they don't know how to spell Jersey

what do you expect from jersey folks. when someone asks them to use their fingers to count to 2, they do so by using 1 finger per hand to do so, the middle ones. ;)

Speaking of Middle Fingered Jersey Girls- Did anyone else TiVo or DVR the broadcast?

We were watching the TiVo yesterday, and during that sequence of Goal/No Goal for Rolston's kicked in goal, they kept showing the bench - Lemaire/NJ and there was this gal on the glass behind him. When they finally said "no goal" wouldn't ya know it, She puts both hands up and the middle fingers were up above Lemaire's head. Hub says ---- did she come down here to catch a game????:lol: I said um, hun, I think this is another girl. He swears she looked like the same girl from Game 7--- I was thinking the gal from Game 7 was a bit younger.

I completely forgot about those tees being sold --- so naturally I missed getting one and saw a lady in our section holding it up. They looked cute to me. But I do like the one's from last year.

I'm LOLing at the Hot Ruutu Girlfriend. Of course he's got a hot girlfriend, that would be my expectation.

for the first time, I actually feel like I'm missing out on something as well. Even when I did have seats there in 112, I never paid any attention the WAG section... for the same reason I paid no attention to the storm squad. I came to watch hockey, not get distracted by cheerleaders at a hockey game.

But if the female posters among us even noticed, there must be something to the assertion of attractiveness of Mr. Ruutu's female companion.... I merely was curious for all parties involved to review the visual evidence so that everyone could make their own determination one way or the other.....

Edited to add:

It's official.... I am in serious trade rumor withdrawl for sure if I've now posted twice about the appearance of a girlfriend of a hockey player... When's Canada's first hockey game again? *goes off to lookup schedule*....

I definately think Ray feels that Saturday was his last home game (hopefully, just for a few months)...he seemed to be soaking it all in more than usual. He's a class act, from beginning to end. I get why he has to go from the business side of things, but it will be weird to be there with no Wizard on the ice.

Yes, I'm not sure if it was Joni or Tuomo's other half that did the excellent pulling of shirts but our group was quite pleased. :) FTR, I wouldn't call Ru's woman hot...but she is definately pretty. Cody is just too adorable. Friendly and was good at crowd control - it got a little confusing with the credit card line being long.

SO happy for Zach. What a way to start off the goal scoring. You know, the hockey we're playing now makes you wish we could somehow make the disastrous October and November disappear, but I'm SO excited when moments like that goal happen as to what the future holds. It's going to be tough to see favorites go. But with plenty more Carson-Sutter-Boychuk goals in store...the road ahead looks good.

Forgot to add...the "Jersey Diva" was in my section. Her friend was not as helpful as she should have been to stop her from making a fool of herself. I couldn't read her sign but she was definitely proud of herself and her home state.

Yeah, I'm a little late. I went to the State Hoops 4 Hope game yesterday. Great game. But the hockey game was definitely a high point. I loved seeing Marty being chased off the ice. Zach's first goal. I think that's the second we've seen this season... and a first hat trick... I'm already having withdrawal. I just wish Jussi was in Vancouver. I did a Jussi chant, but nobody could hear me. I'm in the rafters. I'm glad they showed the unveilings on the screen. they were on the other side of the bowl from me.

I saw the "hot" girlfriends. We were one of the first in line for the shirts, probably 15th in line. I got Cole. I think I probably would have screamed if I'd gotten one of the Fins or Cam.

I hate seeing the rumors about Ray. I am in denial. I don't want them to trade him. :( We're playing good! Get rid AWard! PLEASE!
