Later tonight, we have Russia vs Latvia. Tomorrow we have the ultimate grudge match in the preliminaries: Czech Republic vs. Slovakia!

My son watches Mighty Ducks over and over. It also reminded me of Mighty Ducks 2 in the first match of Team Iceland vs. Team USA. Here Malkin would be Gunnar Stahl.

I'd like to watch the Slovaks and Czechs go at it tonight, doesn't come on till 12am tonight though, and I don't have a DVR anymore.

Wow, nice cheating Sedin.
CHC--Looks like it should be on CNBC (266HD/37SD on TWC) (http://www.nbcolympics.com/tv-listings/zone=ET/day=7/sport=IH/index.html).

Didn't watch the game, but he did well from what I've read. In fact, he was Puck Daddy's 2nd Star of the day.

Am I the only person that didn't realize Johnny Oduya is Swedish?

I didn't know it either. We were watching the game yesterday and I made a comment to Hubs that I didn't know Oduya was Swedish and Hubs said he thought the name was Irish. I said I don't think they play much hockey in Ireland. In the same vein, it seemed to me that there were more German sounding names on the Swedish team than on the German team with all the "berg" and "strom" names.

Nope, I didn't know either.
I was so annoyed at my DVR last night. I had several hours of Olympics coverage that I was all set to watch and all of a sudden the DVR erased EVERYTHING!!!! It better not do that to me again!

Nope. And I didn't know the Kostitsyns were from Belarus either.

Aw, that's who they played. I saw the tweet from Hedican when I got up this morning that Pavel Demitra got the shootout winner, but didn't know who they were playing.
Go Slovaks :)

How is the seeding done? I thought I heard the top 2 teams from each group get a buy. But then I saw its the Top 4 teams with all groups combined that get a buy. Which is it?
DeWaltGirl

From the NBCOlympics.com - so it's probably all wrong.
Preliminary round
Each team will play the other three teams in its group once during the 18-game preliminary round. The three-point system will be used to determine rank in this round, with points awarded as follows:
• Three points for the winning team at the end of regulation time
• One point for both teams at the end of regulation time if the game is tied
• An additional point for the team winning the game in a overtime period or the shootout
• Zero points for the team losing the game in regulation time
At the end of the preliminary round, all 12 teams will be ranked. The top four teams overall will advance to the quarterfinal round, and the bottom eight teams will each play one qualification playoff game. The winners of those four games advance to the quarterfinal round.
The following criteria will be used in the order presented to determine this ranking following completion of the preliminary round (1D - 12D):
1. Higher position in the group*
2. Higher number of points
3. Better goal difference
4. Higher number of goals scored for
5. Better 2009 IIHF World Ranking
This ranking will be used for seeding the teams in the playoff games and will be used for calculating the final ranking at the conclusion of the 2010 Olympic Winter Games men's tournament.
Qualification playoff round
The qualification playoff games will be played with the following match-ups (Group E):
5D vs. 12D (Winner will become E1)
6D vs. 11D (Winner will become E2)
7D vs. 10D (Winner will become E3)
8D vs. 9D (Winner will become E4)
Medal round
The four winning teams of the qualification playoff games will advance to the medal round. Throughout the medal round, the home team will be the team with the higher ranking after the preliminary round.
The quarterfinal games will be played with the following match-ups (Group F):
1D vs. E4 (Winner will become F1)
2D vs. E3 (Winner will become F2)
3D vs. E2 (Winner will become F3)
4D vs. E1 (Winner will become F4)
The four winning teams of the quarterfinal games will advance to the semifinals. The four losing teams of the quarterfinal will be ranked 5 through 8 according to their ranking after the preliminary round.
The semifinal games will be played with the following match-ups.
F1 vs. F4
F2 vs. F3
The semifinal winners play in the gold-medal game; the semifinal losers play in the bronze-medal game.
*Placing in the group is determined by the number of points of each team obtained in all the games in their respective group.
If two teams are tied with the same number of points and same number of games, the winner of their head-to-head game will be ranked higher.
If three teams are tied with the same number of points and same number of games, the following criteria will be used to determine their ranking within their group:
(a) greater number of points obtained in all the group matches between the teams concerned,
(b) goal difference resulting from all the group matches between the teams concerned,
(c) greater number of goals scored in all the group matches between the teams concerned,
(d) greater number of points obtained against next closest best-ranked team,
(e) goal difference in a match against next closest best-ranked team,
(f) greater number of goals scored in a match against next closest best-ranked team,
(g) higher 2009 IIHF World Ranking.

^ Yeah I don't understand that at all :)
Watching Czech now; Jagr looks pretty good to me.
And I swear Doc Emerick is saying "Gaborik" over and over here in the first period and, gee, Doc, he plays for Slovakia...
And per NBC and a few other places, one Josef Vasicek is on the team:
http://www.nbcolympics.com/athletes/athlete=12493/index.html
Which probably everyone on the board knows but me. Sorry, been out of it for a good while...
edit: Well, what do you know, Big Joe was just on the ice. Awesome.

It's pretty simple really....
The winners of the 3 "divisions" get the top 3 "seeds", kinda like.. o yeah, the NHL playoffs. Even being with the Leafs now, I'm sure he remembers what they were like.
The tie breaker is goal differential, kinda like... o yeah, every international hockey tournament.
The 12 seeds then fall into a 16-team elimination bracket, kinda like.. o yeah, the NCAA basketball tournament. Except the bottom 4 teams are all named "BYE".
Pretty simple really. I think Burkie just likes to complain.

Tomas Vokoun on Olympic hockey fans: "You get goose bumps standing in the crease before the game. The atmosphere is unbelievable. You see all kinds of people with Canadian jerseys in the stands; they come to any game, and that shows how much they love hockey in this country. They know the game, and they were chanting for Latvia there. It's been great. Where I play in the States – well, to come here, Canadians really show how much they love hockey. They go to any games and enjoy."
On behalf of all Florida hockey fans: Bite me. Make it to the playoffs this decade and maybe someone will show up for you down there.

:lol: @ SHC. Tomas Vokoun is a jack***. I love how players (and there are several) will wax on about how "great the atmosphere" is in (insert Canadian bldg) and continue to blather on, giving the already arrogant Canadian media the requisite sound bite to say---- ya see, he plays in the NHL and he says that his team's bldg doesn't have "passion" and you see, they don't belong down there. :eyeroll.
I would argue, that it's the fans from OTHER COUNTRIES who have come in and shown passion for this game. Who in the frick and frack couldn't get all in a tizzy to the drum beat of LAT-V-IA! LATVIA! I've watched all their games just so I can see just how crazy those folks are and how much they love their team REGARDLESS of the fact that it's likely they won't win ONE single game in these Olympics (or insert international event here) I will never forget the World Championships that they hosted that year of the lockout (or maybe it was that 2003 spring before the lockout) when that building they played in was unbelieveable. The drums, the girls in legwarmers, the dancing, and on and on. MTL might have atmosphere- EDM and CGY might too; but seriously, these European teams show plenty, and so do several fan bases in the US. If Vokoun's team wouldn't implode on a regular basis and never get to the playoffs maybe he'd know first hand; or I'd say do something in the regular season and get them in your bldg and give em a reason to go nuts.
Am I the only person that didn't realize Johnny Oduya is Swedish?
I just saw this, so totally late. I'm geeky enough to know he's Swedish. I recall Doc Emerick saying on a broadcast that first season he played for them "Oduya, the Swede......" and hub saying --- now how is he Swedish?

How nice that CNBC is using the CTV feed with Peter Labouddis (sp?) and Ray Ferraro with the call for the CZE/Latvia game. Maybe they shoulda just truly patnered with CTV and used their feeds for all the "other" games, and used Emerick & Olcyzk for the USA games.
Not too many people in Thunderbird Arena though.

Holy cow, anyone else watching this game? Latvia tied it up with a little over three minutes to play! OT! And Jagr has left the ice with an injury.
(master plan is working bwahahahahaha)
ETA: Krejci just scored to win it for the Czechs in OT. Latvia gave them a good fight there at the end.

Certainly Czech and Slovakia games were much much closer than I (or pretty much anybody?) thought they'd be. But it was fun to have picked the Swiss-Belarus game right on the nose, shootout and all.
WOW! The Latvian goalie's line from last night is amazing:
Edgars Masalskis 50 shots, 47 saves

Well, I got USA (not hard) and Slovakia but completely missed the boat on Russia-Canada. Wow. Finland, what can you say, they impressed the crap out of me with that win.
Finland-USA I go with Finland. Canada-Slovakia I go with Canada. Canada... holy crap that was a performance vs. Russia.

Enh, I pretty much thought Russia just gave up. And I think we can beat Finland. We've got better goaltending, for sure.
