To get over my bitter disappointment for Team USA and Timmy, I'm posting in this thread.

I hope they get a rousing ovation when all four return to the RBC Center.

Extremely proud for ALL; especially proud of Tim Gleason.

They did us proud that's for sure.

And I too am really happy that ALL 4 came home with some type of medal.

I am equally proud of all of them.

This seems an appropriate a place as any to post this achievement.

Triple Gold Club (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triple_Gold_Club)

The Triple Gold Club is a term used to describe ice hockey players who have won an Olympic Games gold medal, a World Championship gold medal, and the Stanley Cup, the championship trophy of the National Hockey League (NHL). The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) considers them to be "the three most important championships available to the sport".

Tomas Jonsson, Mats Näslund and Håkan Loob became the first members on 27 February 1994 when Sweden won the gold medal at the 1994 Winter Olympics. The term first entered popular use following the 2002 Winter Olympics, which saw the addition of the first Canadian members. On 8 May 2007, the IIHF announced it would formalize the club and recognize the players who had won the three championships. The ceremony was to take place in Canada during the 2008 World Championship but it was later changed to occur during the inaugural Victoria Cup, in September 2008. Ultimately, the induction ceremony was held, with all 22 members present, at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, on 22 February 2010.

There are twenty-three members of the Triple Gold Club—nine Swedes, six Russians, six Canadians, and two Czechs. Six of the players are defencemen and the remaining players are forwards; no goaltenders have won all three championships. Measuring from the time of their first victory of one of the three championships, Swedes Niklas Kronwall, Mikael Samuelsson and Henrik Zetterberg needed the least amount of time to join the club, winning the Olympics and World Championships in 2006 and the Stanley Cup in 2008 (as members of the Detroit Red Wings). In contrast, it took Russian Viacheslav Fetisov 19 years from his first victory to become a member. Fetisov, his countryman Igor Larionov, and Swede Peter Forsberg are the only players to have won each of the three championships more than once. Eight members of the Triple Gold Club have won the Stanley Cup as part of the Detroit Red Wings, more than any other NHL team.

With his Gold Medal in today's Ice Hockey finals, Eric Staal becomes the 23rd member of the Triple Gold Club.

It does suck a little for the silver medal team in this format. The gold and bronze winners get to celebrate their victories while the silver medal team is standing there like the ugly girl or guy at the dance.

Eric was on 99.9 and mentioned "all the heavy metal coming back to Raleigh" and talked about how well Timmy played in the tourney. He sounds so over the moon and very happy for everyone, and "happy I got the one that's gold".

On this whole Triple Gold Club thing that's been mentioned and tweeted about --- I guess it's a huge deal; Eric didn't realize how big a deal, lol. I found this on the IIHF website with a real nice picture of him:

Triple Gold for Eric Staal (http://www.iihf.com/channels10/olympics-2010/news/news-singleview-world-championship-2009/article/triple-gold-for-eric-staal.html?tx_ttnews=3471&cHash=36aecad3e9)

Chip posted this after his sit down with #12 in Toronto (http://blogs.newsobserver.com/canes/staal-reflects-on-golden-game):

Staal now has won a Stanley Cup with the Canes, a World Championship with Canada and now the Olympic gold medal. He's the 23rd member of the "Triple Gold Club," they call it.

"They made a pretty big deal of that," Staal said. [B]"I got to the locker room and (NHL) commissioner Gary Bettman shook my hand and gave me a little pin and I took a few pictures with him.

"They said I was the 23rd member and the sixth Canadian to be in that mix. So a pretty elite club and for me at 25 to be a part of that is pretty cool."

LTD that is hilarious.

Maybe you can go through one of your pictures and cut out Joni's head and put it on the Cole bobblehead. Then you can make a new placecard to cover Cole's name. Haven't even looked at the Cole bobblehead but could work if only the 2 is showing and not the 6

If you didn't know it before, I think you now have proof there is no limit to the level to which the LTD family will stoop to get out of doing any real work (including homework, I did have a seven-year-old co-conspirator).

Eric Staal interview on 99.9 The Fan (http://www.wralsportsfan.com/hurricanes/audio/7141338/)

I listened live. Wouldn't be a Staaly interview without the word "neat" being uttered at least once. His comments about his Olympic roommate are hysterical. And I get the impression he might be avoiding Timmay (but gave him big props for his performance).

I wasn't on at all after 8 or 9 last night so I missed all this; I clicked on this thread, read through it, and said, OMG I'm sendin' this to Mr. Socal--- so I sent it to him and had to crop it because h they have restrictions on their email on size and what comes through, etc., at his office; so my caption was "Crafty Olympians"...... he sends a note back and says "Um, let me guess- LTD????" and then he asked where Joni was.:lol::lol: But he did give kudos on the meticulous nature of the prOject.

Fantastic! and it absolutely should be shared with the Canes FB page or the Canes org. VERY CREATIVE.

Medals on display at Thursday night's game! (http://hurricanes.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=519606)

Hurricanes to Welcome Home Olympic Medalists
Fans to have opportunity to take pictures with four medals
Tuesday, 03.02.2010 / 1:56 PM / News
By Terrell Williams

RALEIGH, NC—Doug Warf, Senior Director of Marketing for the Carolina Hurricanes and Executive Director of the Kids ‘N Community Foundation, announced today that the team will honor its four Olympic medalists during its game Thursday night against the Ottawa Senators. The game marks the first home game since the conclusion of the Winter Olympics in Vancouver, where Hurricanes players earned four medals – one gold, one silver and two bronze.

In addition to the in-game recognition of the Hurricanes’ Olympians, fans will have an opportunity to see the prizes earned by the players. All four medals will be on display on the main concourse near section 113. For a minimal, tax-deductible donation ($3) to the Kids ‘N Community Foundation, fans can see and get their pictures taken alongside the Olympic medals. Fans should bring their own personal cameras for the pictures.

All four of the Hurricanes' Olympians won hardware in Vancouver, making Carolina one of only two teams for which every player represented won a medal. The Hurricanes were one of three teams that saw players win one of each type of medal (Anaheim and Vancouver were the others), as Eric Staal won gold with Canada, Tim Gleason captured silver with the United States and Tuomo Ruutu and Joni Pitkanen earned bronze with Finland. Only Anaheim (7 medals) and San Jose (5) won more medals at the Olympics than Carolina. Chicago and Los Angeles each also won four.

Staal, 25, totaled one goal and five assists in Vancouver, ranking tied for third in the tournament in assists and tied for 10th in points. With his Olympic gold medal, he became just the 23rd player in history to enter the “Triple Gold Club” as a winner of hockey’s three biggest championships – a Stanley Cup, an Olympic gold and a World Championship. Staal is the first active player to win Olympic gold in franchise history.

Gleason, 27, was (+3) in six games while helping the United States to the silver medal. The Clawson, MI, native is the first Hurricane to win silver since Tom Barrasso did so in Salt Lake City in 2002. Pitkanen, 26, earned four points (1g, 3a) in helping Finland to bronze, and led the tournament in penalty minutes (29). Ruutu, 27, scored a goal for Finland as well.

Ahhhhhhh pretty.

Do ya'll remember after the OLY break in '06 when we first got back in the Arena? I recall going to that first practice back with IceSaber and we were the first ones in the building for that practice, and I remember we both gasped when we saw the ice; it was SO pretty. Kinda like that first day back after the lockout ended.

It sure looks GREAT! It feels like we haven't been in there in months.

It is VERY unfortunate that I will not be able to go to the game Thursday, as much as I want. We attend the ACC Women's tournament every year and NCSU women are playing Thursday night. I can't wait to see everyone's pictures with the medals, and LTD, PLEASE take lots of shots during the "ceremony" (or whatever they do). I keep hoping they add medals to the banners. It's supposed to be a simple knee 'scope -- going in and smoothing out the cartilage under my right knee because it makes ATROCIOUS grinding noises when I bend down, not to mention that I can forecast weather with it. (I knew all morning that this rain was a sure thing because the knee has ached since I got up.) Dr. Isbell -- who put Corvo back together after that skate to the calf and did Rod's ACL a few years ago -- is doing it. (And, no, I didn't pick him just because he does the Canes, although I figure taking care of pro athletes is a pretty good pedigree. I got the most recommendations for Raleigh Ortho, divided between Dr. Isbell and another doc and Dr. Isbell had the first available appointment.)

I'm bummed I won't get to see the medals in person, but I'm very proud of our guys and proud that all four we sent are coming home with medals.

I'm putting this here, even if it is about another team's medalists- because it kind of falls in line with what the Canes did last night with the medal display.

My childhood friends who live in back home in socal, The OC actually; Rancho Santa Margarita and are Ducks STHers got to attend this event, with the Ducks Olympians for Ducks TV and I don't think I'm ever going to get them off the ceiling they were sending me pics like crazy people the whole time. Anyway, the Ducks really went out of their way to share the Gold, Silver & Bronze won by their Olympians and the general public. They really get the whole "Fan experience thing". Our neighbors had asked us if we thought the Canes might do some type of event for STHers kinda like the Cup event or even a general public thing. I think they really could do something cool in that regard.

Ducks give fans five-ring salute (http://www.ocregister.com/sports/ducks-237648-selanne-olympic.html)

this was my fave quote; and sounded like a guy on our team who shares the same heritage ;)

"This is the easiest part of the job," Teemu Selanne said, wearing his Finland jersey and bronze medal. "On the ice, that's a lot harder. I don't even look at this as being a job. We're making people happy. It's good to make people happy."
