View Full Version : Game Thread? ..... @ Toronto 3/2/2010

I hope CL is feeling well enough to start these game threads soon, but I know she's recovering/busy today so here we go. Do we remember how to do this?
So, the Canes head to TO today from Raleigh and Vancouver.
What we know and don't know:
The game is on TV and starts at 7pm.
Only Justin Peters has been called up. Since Peters has played in real games during the Oly break, does he get the start in TO or Legace?
In the final pre-Oly game, Boychuk and Goertzen were in the lineup, but since they are not called up (as of now) - who is returning?
Will Staal and Gleason play?
Do we remember that Matt Cullen doesn't play for the Canes anymore?:(
Will there be a trade prior to the face off at the ACC?

The one that's traded by game time.

Rumors are abound that either A. Ward, Corvo, or Alberts will be on the move before the team comes home. I don't think it needs to be said which player the fanbase would prefer to be dealt.

We're on a 5 game win streak!? We've won 9 of 11!? And 10 of 13!?
Yeah, welcome back, boys!

Chip just tweeted that Erik Cole will play tomorrow.
ETA: NHL_Canes just tweeted that Walker and Larose will also play.
Cole practiced in a white jersey yesterday and went full-force by what I saw. LaRose, walker, and Brindy were in gray jerseys which I thought had something to do with injuries (better than yellow though!). I think they may have been the only ones in gray.
I am still hoping that A Ward goes nowhere. This weekend he jumped on the ice and played "against" the mini-mites on Saturday and then gave a bunch of them a tour of the rec zone locker room on Sunday. My son was so excited to play against a Cane. I know he has not been particularly successful on our ice but I'll love him forever :)

Sometimes Coach Mo pulls out the gray jerseys for line combos or special drills, although I've seen guys wear them as no-touch as well.
All the forwards practiced in either red or white jerseys today. Cole was mostly with Brindy and with Scott Walker, but they only had five dress in white (Chad and Yelle were the other two) so they were double-shifting on some of the drills. All the other forwards were in red, really not possible to gauge any line combos though without Staal or Tuomo there.
Justin Peters did make it into town and was at the practice as well today.
And Alex Picard does look a little like David Tanabe as people previously reported, at least his facial features do. I was never around Tanabe enough to be able to tell if his skating style or defensive style compares. I posted a couple of pictures of him out on flickr (http://www.flickr.com/photos/jbk-ltd/sets/72157623410552257/) if anyone wants to see him in the sightless eye before Thursday.

he didn't skate much (Tanabe) just stared at the lights and posed. Hopefully Picard won't be that kind of player.

Yeah Pete Dawg. He's an Ontario boy, good choice.
I never get tired of the whole Binder Crew in Toronto and just cracked up seeing the Canes tweet a picture of Manny signing autographs (http://twitpic.com/167yuz)on his walk over to Air Canada Centre.
If you've never gone to TO to watch a game or do a roadie, it's a must just for this factor. NHL Teams typically stay at the Westin Harbour Castle and the ACC is right across the street. They never bus over because there's no need. So on any given day- when we were up there, we were there for 5days/4 nights, we stayed at the Westin, and buzzing around that hotel were the binder dudes. (i.e. guys who waited around for a player to sign his hockey cards, and the did it ALL DAY long) waiting for their chance to get to a player. Any would do, but the year we went up, it was #92 and #10. #92's rep was "he's grumpy" and #10 was "elusive". What was funny was we were there with friends, we alternated wearing some type of Canes gear (hub had a long sleeve polo, a hat, and I had a couple of Canes related items that I switched up during our stay). We "befriended" a few of these dudes who thought we "were with the team" and wanted to know if we knew what floor they were staying on. I told one guy, even if I knew, I'm not telling YOU. At points some of these guys were truly harmless--- Others, totally creepy/scary/stalkerish.

Last word I heard (I think from Maurice's post skate interview) was that the final lineups and scratches won't be determined until just before warmups.
Unless something changes between now and 6:30 pm they have 13 forwards and 7 defensemen.

I think Chip wrote that in his blog this morning, and I howled at the visual; then hearing JF say the same thing, and how he said to #12 "is this going to be a regular thing now as a gold medalist?" THAT made me crack up. So not Eric Staal, but I'm guessing because he has doing so much media in Canada, they wanted to take precautions? (remember when someone stole Crosby's jersey/gold medal in juniors and they found it in someone's mailbox?)

Alright heres the deal after seeing Toronto play tonight. Boston has two 1st round picks (Torontos and theirs) which I discussed with @puckdrops earlier. Boston wants a d-man and a sniper/puck handler. We trade Ray Whitney and Joe Corvo or Aaron Ward or Andrew Alberts if they get the job done to Boston for Torontos 1st round pick which is a surefire top 5. We want a 1st + a prospect right so surely just a high first is good enough for us. That'd leave us with two 1st round picks in at least the top 10 of the draft. Ofcourse this would work out if it was the perfect world, hard to say if Boston will part with that pick or if Ray will go to Boston but if that deal could be worked thats the way to go. Depending on what goes down with other trades we have the prospects to cover those positions the rest of the year and improve our own pick a little ;).

Yeah, they must have had to get going.
They already have a game write up on the National Post- a couple funny snippets:
All any observer needed to know about the game came at the end of the second period out of what had to be a maddening stretch of play for Wilson.
For at least a full 90 seconds at even strength, the Hurricanes controlled the puck as if they had a man advantage.
All five Maple Leafs on the ice collapsed into the middle of their own zone, leaving Carolina's fivesome to whip passes around at will creating chance after chance with Toronto barely even threatening to clear the puck.
Had the disgruntled crowd of 19,096 at the Air Canada Centre had its way, just about every Maple Leaf could have been sent packing without complaint.
The only real cheer of the night for Toronto's fans came when Carolina captain and Team Canada gold medallist Eric Staal had his name announced as part of a salute to all the Olympians in the building

If it had appeared in any other market's paper, I'd say that I guess it doesn't matter how well the Canes are playing, they will be labeled "lowly" due to their place in the standings, but to see this headline in TORONTO??? The ONE PLACE that is LOWER in the standing then the "lowly" Canes??
Leafs sunk by lowly Hurricanes in return to ice (http://www.thestar.com/sports/hockey/article/774149--leafs-sunk-by-lowly-hurricanes-in-return-to-ice)
We may be lowly, but not one team would want to play us in a 7 game series right now with the way we are playing. Well, the Sharks or Hawks would likely not be concerned about a 7 game series, but most teams would not want to play us.

There may have been 19,096 tickets sold, but no way there were 19,096 in attendance. One of the first comments I made to SC06 while watching the game was look at all the great seats that are empty.
That's par for the course in TO- they were there, but they were down in the "Platinum Club" where all the suits hang out and eat Sushi. On a "good game" they might take at least half a period to come out from underneath the Platinum area and away from the sushi and finger foods they supply down there. It's PITIFUL.
Who else notice how many people in Leafs jerseys all of a sudden appeared down stairs in the end zones? You never see anybody wearing Leafs gear in the LL. They're upstairs.
LOWLY CANES? Some kinda crazy those clowns calling us LOWLY.

I thought the way Tripp threw Ryan Miller under the bus "on a play he should have had against Crosby" and the ol, "he was too deep in net" was the jinx on Pete Dawg.
I loved that. Pile on the Slug. Worth losing the shutout to twist the knife.

Great game, even though it was only against the lowly Maple Leafs. WIth all the distractions around the trade deadline and the two-week break, we could have come out flat but we played with effort and heart. I was looking forward to the Sutter/Rosie/Ruuty line and they did not disappoint me. Pete Dawg showed poise in the net. I really like him. Good to see the Finn magic still working. I noticed Alex Picard in not a good way at the beginning of the game but didn’t notice him later in the game which I assume to be a good thing.
At this stage of the season all I want them to do is show up and care about the game, and they did that admirably and then some.
Ray looked "fidgety" on the bench toward the end of the game. Can't help but wonder what's going through his head.
Now we’ll see what today brings.

Wow. Last game highlights of quite a few folks in Canes jerseys up there. Thanks as always, GH.
Corvo pushing people away from Peters. Walker dancing behind the net.
How freaking good has Ray-Staal-Jokinen been?
edit: and with Toronto's trades this game probably set some kind of record for "last games before being traded" in a single game.
And how many 3rd period shutout-busters are gonna happen vs. Peters.
