wonder if this means legace will be going somewhere or Pogge was just thrown in to go play in the minors. hes a big goalie but nothing to see there.

Pogge? Why do we need him?

He was supposed to be the goalie-of-the-future in Toronto, but quickly played himself out of town.

Who cares about Pogge? We got rid of AWard.

Its a very solid pick up for someone we put on waivers this season.

I suspect Peters has demonstrated he's ready to do back up in the NHL and Pogge is the AHL body. But then again, you never know if this was a JR's goalie jones at play or on a recommendation from Maurice-- or both...

Well, we'll be needing a new whipping boy now.

Any pickup for a guy we couldn't give away earlier is good.

Not bad. Pogge was supposed to be a beast, but hasn't lived up to the hype. Perhaps destined to be a backup or career minor leaguer. The 4th is just another player to put on the shelf.

All this for a guy who fell out of favor and probably would not have been back. Good deal.

AWard wasn't the same guy from his first run with the Canes. Good to see him go (he just didn't fit in this year) and I hope he finds his game again.

agree 100%. Peters may not be destined to be a backup for us, guys... maybe pogge is our new leighton. maybe he was just forced on us in order to cover cap space? he is an RFA, so we have no obligations to him.

With Cam out, Legace and Peters have the load. Don't see a Legace trade, or we will have two AHL'ers in the net. Pogge is Albany bound.

Pogge is a player that was once was looked at as having a lot of potential and never lived up to the expectations. In other words, a project player and typical J.R. move. Low risk, high reward

Ward's interview on TSN made me sad. I'm glad he's not playing on our team anymore... but here's the quote:

"When you're 37, you have to think of things you didn't have to think of before... like whether or not to pull your 6 year old out of school and tell him his dad was traded to the west coast"

He sounded very, very sad to be leaving NC. He said he was blindsided by it... more than once he said "I didn't see the Ducks coming".

I'm supposed to be doing a happy dance- but now Aaron is on TSN.

Wow - little Chip is all grown up, a shoutout on TSN.

BIG TIME Shout Out. Good for Chirp.

Ward is very gracious on TSN right now. Reminds me of why he's so likeable. Interesting how he said outright "I played the worst hockey of my life for two straight months".

Pogge will definitely be in Charlotte next season. Look at who our GM is? He can't help himself with the goalies. Pogge got thrown under the bus in his development with TO. HE NEVER HAD A SHOT. He needs to revitalize his head and career. Welcome to the Canes kid- we do revitalization projects really well. :-

Good luck Aaron. It so did not work out. Help the Ducks get back in the playoffs. Pierre just said, "Aaron Ward's an upgrade"

Bye Aaron, good luck in Anaheim. Glad I don't have to watch that stare down, shove, then tackle play that you perfected this year.

Good for Pete Dawg. Seems like he's cemented to be Cam's back up next year. And now Mike Murphy has a new guy to share the net with in Pogge.

I don't know...just saw this tweet:

nhl_canes (http://twitter.com/nhl_canes)
When Maurice coached Pogge in Toronto, said he reminded him of Tom Barrasso and that two are now perfect match in Carolina.

***Hopefully this doesn't mean that Peters gets shafted.

it wouldn't be JR without goalies involved... you can never have too many goalies in the system... although it might stop him from drafting 5 of them in the upcoming draft with these extra picks we're picking up....

Pogge gets to spend time developing at minors level and work with Barrassso... another year or two with him and he may come along like Peters appears to be doing...

and if Cam is going to be a broken player, it never hurts to have some prospects in the system.... multiple years with back injuries doesn't inspire confidence, imo.... could it be a blip and Cam is fine for the next 10 years without another injury?... sure.... but goalies and multiple back injuries make me worried...

peters will be moved... almost guarantee it. if he's an NHLer, there's no room for him with Cam...

I don't disagree.... but it sure would be nice to have Cam only play about 50 games and have a very good backup play the others...... It might be better for him than 37 games straight at a time...

I think it's much more likely we see Legace moved. There are some teams out there with playoff intentions that need an insurance policy, and not a single goalie has been moved yet. Biron's on the market in New York and it wouldn't surprise me to see Edmonton shopping Khaby. But I think we're in the conversation with teams like Philadelphia and Buffalo.

Probably it's blasphemy but Ward actually had a decent January/February -- compared to his October, November, and December at least. Hopefully he can find his game again, it really feels like we got decent "value" for him. Good luck with the Ducks, Aaron!

No one looking for an insurance policy is going to take Khabibulin. Both Islander goalies are on the table, and perhaps Turco (though given his playoff record I don't know how I'd feel about him as insurance, either), but no one is taking Legace.

i dont think i qualified my original peters trade by saying, he'll go at the draft or something like that, not today.

SoCalcaniac
03-03-2010, 02:15 PM
G33 is right, anyone looking to Khabibulin as an "insurance policy" would be on crack, as Khabibulin is DONE for the year after having had back surgery; Thus one of the reasons, along with Hemsky being done for the year, that EDM is in the Taylor/Tyler sweepstakes. That would make zero sense.

No way is Peters being traded. I don't see that. The Coach is going to have to re-think his run-the-#1-guy-into-the-ground tack, and work this kid into relieving Cam some more. They've invested in Cam and JR would not be smart if he didn't say something to his BFF on how they handle this situation going forward.

Makes sense to trade Peters on draft day instead. Let him play here for the rest of this season, if he continues to play well he'll only gain value for a draft day trade.

I wasn't talking about today either. I don't see him being moved now but I see him being showcased the rest of the season.

I think Peters stays here for another year or two, plays 20-30 games a year behind Ward and looks good, and then we trade him (as Anaheim did with Gerber) to a team looking for a starter for a solid prospect and a decent pick.

The team seems to play the same way in front of Peters as they do in front of Ward, which is very important. We haven't had that since the Gerber/Ward tandem four seasons ago.

Pogge is depth.

Nope, not blasphemy. Many people were too busy kicking him while he was down to notice, but it's the truth.

Aaron Ward is a fantastic guy who did a LOT in this community and is a huge part of the growing respect for the Canes across the league. He has never said a bad word about this organization. I'm thankful to him for that and for his good years here but, no, this was not a good year for him. I hope he never experiences that again and wish him the best of luck in Anaheim. No matter how bad he was this year, and he wasn't the only one by a looooong shot, I'll always have happy feelings when I think of him.

^that!

I was actually kinda relieved that in the video at ch.com he still mentioned that he plans to be here after he retires. I wondered if he'd soured on the whole place (and I've been waiting for him to replace Tripp for too long to give up that dream).

And as an aside. Seeing both his and Walker's comments about moving to a new place when you've got a family (Aaron concerned about being so far, Walker relieved about being so close) it makes you realize that the whole "chase the Cup" thing is just a wee bit more complicated than we'd like to believe -- or some do. I know we don't know exactly what went down with Ray (as far as any offer in front of him and an extension) or Wallin - but it certainly validates for me that it's really easy as fans to poo-poo the notion that players would be reluctant to move but it's probably the farthest thing from the truth for people with families. Some (not many here I'll admit) seem to think picking up and moving that distance is no big deal -- "its' just a few months". Bull.

SoCalcaniac
03-03-2010, 06:05 PM
Yeah I agree- it is BULL. I remember Doug Weight saying how the "Sacrifice of hotel living is worth it, but it's still difficult" during an interview on FSN Midwest that summer after we won. He was clearly thrilled that it came to what it did, but you could hear in his voice, how difficult it was on him and his family. I'll never forget that.

I was struck by AWard's comments (to TSN I think?) today when he said he was trying to get to his son's school before someone told him he got traded before he could tell him. That's what struck me most.

I raise my hand as one of many who just wanted Aaron gone. I'm still glad he has been traded, it just had to be; for all the reasons prior to today, and because it's what the GM wanted. I have not forgotten what Ward has contributed in the past, I love that he continues to tout Raleigh as the place he'll lay down retirement roots, and after that sight of him the day he was waived on the day of the STHer party and how he was so CRUSHED, but kept signing, I have another level of respect for Ward.

Plus, I'm like E-- Waiting for Aaron to retire and take Tripp's job. That dream won't die for me either. :-

Thanks Aaron. See ya back in and around Cary soon.

Caniac
03-04-2010, 09:54 AM
Yeah I'd imagine it gets more and more complicated with age and families to be a professional athlete.

Chasing the Cup as a sole priority in life is a young single guy's game.

I'll miss AWard, but really I've been missing him all year anyway. Glad he seems to have put down roots here and I'll never quit holding out hope that he'll be Tripp's replacement one day.

FWIW, Murphy is hurt - hand injury, I believe - so it'll be nice to have additional depth.

I still can't believe AWard was on waivers friggin' weeks ago. OK it was 2 and a half months.

IceSun
03-04-2010, 11:27 PM
I was ecstatic to see him come back.

I was ready to see him go months ago & criticized him more than any other player during games (very unusual for me)

In this season of contradictions, I think we are making the right trade now, but still feel bad for him and his family & the upheaval ahead for them.

Like all, hope he finds a way to end up back in Cary in another role (especially the aforementioned Tripp's job) in the next season or two.

Good luck Aaron
