View Full Version : What's the Roster Look Like?

So who is going to play for us tomorrow? Do we have to make some call ups to ice a team?
By my count, we're short one up front if Yelle is indeed gone, and at exactly 6 on D (with four R shots). JR, Albany on line 1...

^ And Albany's playoff chances may have just went out the window.
Staal - Whitney - Jokinen
Sutter - Ruutu - Larose
Brind'Amour - Samsonov - Cole
Kostopoulos - Dwyer - ?
Pitkanen - Gleason
Pothier - Picard
Carson?
Peters - Legace
Missing? Osala playing right away?

How would we have 6 on D?
Pitkanen
Gleason
Carson
Picard
Pothier (if he shows up on time)

Yeah, sucks not having Cullen.... No real 3rd line center and can't break up the Staal/Jokinen match.

Jokinen is too good to be delegated to 3rd line center at this point... but Dwyer has had a lot of kick at C, and I'm not sure I mind him there for the rest of the season.

time to stick an enforcer on the 4th line to make up for the toughness we lost. having just gleason no longer qualifies as team toughness.

I'm just curious, where do you propose we find this enforcer with the trade deadline passed? Really, not sarcasm, because I'm trying to think of one myself.
Goertzen is about as much an enforcer as Wade Brookbank.

I would expect Rodney back up now that he's healthy. Albany's off until Friday, and even then they're in Hampton Roads, so I'm going to assume we'll call up 2 & 2 if we can and ship them back in time for Friday's game.

He played center during the Olympics. He was acquired because of his ability to play all forward positions.

He came into the league as a center, and can play there in a pinch.
ETA: ^ OTB I didn't see him play at center during the Olympics, I thought he mostly played on Mikko's wing?
And for the other 'D', Jay Harrison?

Riley Cote on waivers, Benn Olson in the ECHL is pretty good. Goertzen or Conboy is temporarily fine as well, just need that 2nd punching bag once Kostopoulos is knocked out. Jay Harrison is a good fighter and isn't bad on D, he could be a call-up.

Nope, can't disagree. Jokinen has earned his spot on the top line (as Sutter has earned his spot on the second). I missed Dwyer playing center.

We may be on the 3 year rebuilding plan. Sell this year, began to develop next year (knowing you will be bad). Try and make the playoffs the following year. If you do, great. If not...oh well. By the 3rd year, hopefully a lot of our picks from this year, and a few ones that develop quicker then expected will be ready to step up and start being a perennial playoff team.

Not here, the market won't bear a 3 year plan. J.R. has to put a playoff caliber team on the ice next year. Wallin, Walker, Yelle, and A. Ward weren't coming back. Corvo and Cullen may be back anyway. Who knows about Whitney. The guys that were leaving anyway weren't exactly top guys anyway and we have younger players who can do as much for less money.

Before everyone starts jumping off bridges on this offense thing, there is such a thing as July 1st and Free Agency. We're seriously not on a "3 yr plan". Just don't see it.
I'm willing to give our GM a chance to work all this out. I fully don't believe that he's making plans to play a bunch of teens or young dudes next season. YoungER maybe, but not the kiddie corral.
I think the GM has been clear to the team and the public on what his intent was for the trade deadline. This doesn't surprise me; but it's disappointing to see so many dudes go. But since I prepped myself --- to a point, this is how I expected today to go.

I don't think we are that far from a playoff team. If we had gone .500 during the 12 game losing streak, we would be fighting among the 6-7-8-9 teams. And we did clear up some cap space for FAs.
I do agree that three may be a bit much for the Raleigh market (I'll defer to those that live there to answer for sure). I think we can survive another year of sucking though, especially if we are putting it out there we have young, hard working players. The key is the second year though. I think we can miss the playoffs, but we can't suck.

Heh, I'm not a bridges kind of guy. (I'm still saying stupid things like 9 points back of the 7th place team with 2 games in hand...) But the UFA goal scoring list is "Marleau, Kovalchuk" this year.
http://www.sportscity.com/nhl/2010-nhl-unrestricted-free-agents-by-position/
But you know, I went down the list of players and we have enough bodies who can put in 15-20 goals. What we're missing is a second 30+ goal scorer (Jokinen is on an incredible run I won't disagree, is he cemented on Staal's wing now?) -- if anything we're too "middle heavy" and Cole and Ruutu and Samsonov are not goal scorers right now. Though we have a long list of 15-25 goal scorers "in theory" ... it would take a combination of Whitney coming back and some of the kids really making a jump, or something very, very unexpected in free agency.
Or, you know, winning the draft lottery I guess.

Agreed. We had the following UFAs:
Cullen - gone
Wallin - gone
Corvo - gone
Walker - gone
Yelle - gone
AWard - gone
Whitney - here
JR said from the get go he was going to trade his UFAs and that he did plus one contract.

I'm unashemedly pro-Corvo (and Cullen and Whitney for that matter) returning if it makes sense. The contracts which are hurting next year are Cole, Brindy, LaRose, and Samsonov. Hopefully most of that group can have a real bounce back year I guess.

Perhaps that is how he played center in the Olympics. I can't recall which game, but he the game announcer commented that he was playing center, which surprised me as I too, usually saw him on the wing, but there he was in the face off circle. He's not the most effective center and Jussi is more versatile than he is.

For lack of anywhere else to post this...
I'm very impressed with the roster as of late, especially Sutter. We seem to have that energy and speed that was lacking over the course of the season. Now that the dust has settled past the trades, I think we should be in good shape for the upcoming season. We have some cap room to supplement our needs, and have plenty of draft picks to stock for the future. If we can get one of these draft picks to make a 1st year impact, and young Boychuk comes up to speed, I think we are in very good shape for the next few years.

In some fairness the ones we lost were either hurt (Walker) or horribly irresponsible defensively (Corvo), it's not a stretch to imagine us playing well without them. Alberts gone and Harrison in is the only one that leaves me feeling uneasy.

Surely the AWard deletion in this conversation was just an oversight eh? Corvo played what 2 months this season for us and came back for 3 or 4 games? I'd take Corvo back on July 1 as I believe he played well for us. He needs the right situation and I think he had that here.
The whole Jay Harrison call up personally baffles me. I was hoping with the exit of Alberts, they would call up Jamie McBain, considering how hell he's done in Albany this season and it's been brought up. or at the very least call up Bryan Rodney. Then I was reminded quickly by our buddy Tripp during the Saturday broadcast that Harrison is one of the Coach's dudes from his days in TO. "Paul Maurice is very comfortable with Jay Harrison, he had him in TO". Nothing against Harrison, but yeah.........

Certainly not saying Corvo wasn't a good defenseman, but until I see Pothier lose a puck as he skates behind our own net and give up a turnover while he 's attempting to skate through our own crease on a breakout and give up a goal, I'm happy with the trade.

I agree. He seems like a steady defenseman who makes good decisions with the puck. We needed a bit of that. It's good sometimes when a difficult situation develops in our end and your heart doesn't skip a beat because of which of our guys is defensively responsible.
