I think it's a treat, when the Western Conference teams come to town. This should be a great game, and Phoenix has flourished this season.
There's a few promotions going on --
The first 10,000 fans will receive an exclusive 6-card team set from Upper Deck including Rod Brind'Amour, Jussi Jokinen, Tuomo Ruutu, Eric Staal and Ray Whitney.
Also -- it's $1 hot dog night! http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_jBs6ozWyKgc/SihcmmRSwAI/AAAAAAAAAyM/iQADj4LfShs/S220/Dancing+hot+dog+C.jpg

I have NEVER had a hot dog at the RBC until recently on a $1 hot dog game. They weren't bad!
The Coyotes played last in Vancouver on Wednesday. Long trip from there, but a few days in between.
Oops, the Canucks game was at home. Nevermind. :)

we got there early on one of the $1 dog nights figuring they would be hot and fresh, what we got was cold leftover hot dog. the "after effects" were worse than the hot dogs so we "opt out" on $1 dog night.

That's all I eat. Quick, easy, and cheap. But the full prices ones are much better than the $1 ones, IMO. I don't know if it's that the plastic box keeps the bun moist or if they are actually different.

I'll be there, ready to get my cards. Something new to get signed! Can't wait. Been WAY too long since we've been to a hockey game. Seems like forever. Now let's see if I can remember what kind of clothes I need to wear. It's going to be quite warm outside, but still 64 inside the RBC.

 The more expensive ones, according to the Hot Dog Expert that I married, are "all beef". Since I don't eat hot dogs, I have to take his word, lol. The stand in our section apparently seems to keep em fresh, hot and tasty on $1 hot dog nites so my hub and a couple of guys in our row are always ready to partake on these nights.
I am happy for PHX and how they've emerged - plus I'm a Shane Doan fan, so this match up should be fun. Plus like CL mentioned, it's great when we get to see WC teams. PHX is no joke. We'll need to be sharp.

There are two classes of hot dogs available in the arena every night. One is all-beef, the other is regular (whatever the hell that would be). I forget how much they each are but I think there is something like a $0.50 or $1 difference?
Anyway, I eat the cheaper ones when I eat them because the all-beef hot dog is too salty, IMO. So I would think the $1 dogs would be my usual. But that plastic box makes a difference.

I have eaten Oscar Meyer All Beef hot dogs my entire life...until they changed the recipe and now they are yucky. We've tried a few other brands, but nothing we all like. But I liked the $1 dog - although I haven't had a hot dog in a number of years in any form.
I was so depressed after the recipe change that I actually spent time googling what the hell happened. Apparently they made them more healthy and removed preservatives, etc.

There's actually a third class of hot dog available at the arena. I think it's the healthy market stand (go figure) that has a gourmet hot dog. It's a bigger weiner (*insert obligatory joke here*) and, best of all, they have chili and slaw available.

There was a rumor years ago that the Red Beans and Rice served at Popeye's (for those of you not in the know, a fried chicken chain that got its start in New Orleans) got its rich, smokey taste from ground Oscar Mayer hotdogs. I no longer get Popeye's Red beans and Rice-- I don't eat hot dogs. I had a patient I treated years ago who used to work in a hot dog plant in eastern NC and what little s/he shared scared me...

I refuse to watch/read/listen to any reports about what food is made of. I figure if I knew more about a lot of things, I'd only eat things I grow myself and I'm in condo, so I can't plant a garden. Although this could be an effective weight-loss method ...
This is my first game since the Olympic break -- it'll be nice to get back in the RBC Center. CL, you've moved to the top of my section so I'll try to say hello.

Well, that game may spell the end of hopes for the playoffs. I thought we played well in spurts and never quit, but Phoenix was tough. that team could be scary in the playoffs with their speed, size, and Bryz---if he gets hot, they could be an even bigger surprise come playoff time.
Cole, while snake-bit, has his speed again and that is great--but I think we need Sutter healthy and Jussi back on the top line...

I have a rant that doesn't have anything to do with the game itself.
Some guy was sitting behind us who, I don't think, has ever sat there before. He had two mid-teen boys and two roughly 12-year-olds and he sat in between them -- the mid-teens on one side, the younger ones on the other. The younger ones were behind me and my seatmate. Not only did those two not. shut. up. for one second, but they also didn't know what they were talking about. (Justin Peters sucks, we'd be winning if Cam was in [really? Cam's scoring for us now?], Cam's probably drunk in a bar, etc.) Worse, I have *never* heard so much cussing at a game -- and it was from the 12-year-olds! "Sh*! Shove it up his *ss! What the hell? D*mn it!" Repeat. A lot.
It was so distracting that I feel like I didn't even SEE the game.
I am really kicking myself for not getting an usher, but I did turn to the guy at the end of the game and said, "Please don't EVER get these seats again." He seemed stoned or heavily medicated when he said to me, "Why's that?" And I said, "Look, I can have the mouth of a sailor, but these two have been horrible -- it's been sh*t, *ss and d*mn the whole game. This one has a Sunkist mustache [and how does that happen when you're drinking from a bottle?!] for the love of God -- he's not old enough to cuss."
If that guy ever gets those seats again, I'm putting him on notice from the get-go that I will not hesitate to get an usher.
And I would have been picking my teeth up off the floor if I'd talked like that in front of my parents at that age.
Btw, LTD, I have a set of cards that you are welcome to.

OMG Kermie, how awful. I have been known to have a short temper, so I'm sure I would have had two KIDS thrown out for fear of me cussing them out.;) What a way to spend the evening (on top of everything going on in front of you)
This game was set up for us to fall apart. I have watched enough of Phoenix (despite Chip's tweet-a-thon attempt to inform us)to know that once they get their lead they are trap city. Dave Tippet is their coach, it's what he did in Dallas, it's what he does there. He'd be the uber Mo. Trap til you kill.
Anyway- we looked off all night. You know things are not going to go your way if you don't cash in on yet another 5 on 3 nothing good will happen. On top of that, I didn't have a warm fuzzy feel on a comeback when Cole shows up on the video board and in response to Tripp's question about how he's feeling - he puts his head down and says "to be honest I feel terrible". OK. I know he's not himself, he's sick but wowee.
It felt like we missed Brandon Sutter. His presence was missing. So was his speed. I like Samson the shootaholic. He's not afraid to shoot the daggone puck. #12 still seems Olympic drunk, heavy legged.
I didn't get to hear much of Forslund on the Aftermath, when we got home and tried to stream the Aftermath (again) they were playing ESPN radio and not the Aftermath. We can't get 99.9 on the radio in our house, we're out of range. But I did have to roll my eyes at the caller who pointed out that Mike Knuble makes as much as Erik Cole. Thanks for pointing out that factoid - Knuble still plays for WSH. Hindsight.
It's a shame we have a full house- close to it, and we lay an egg. I really do hope this puts to rest this pipe dream of squeaking in to the playoffs. I want good competitive hockey til the last day of the season; I don't want to tank. But here's the question I posed to a co-worker of hub's who took his family tonight- and is desperate for playoff hockey. I asked him- so "if" we got in, do you honestly believe we'd have "enough" to not embarass ourselves with a one and out? That would be worse than not making it, IMO.
Ok, this just in- EDM has been officially eliminated from the playoffs with their loss to TO, from the boys at HNIC.

That and seeing CL at the game last night (wooo hoo!) are my game highlights. Not much else positive to report.
Phoenix is a big team. Had no idea Taylor Pyatt was so freaking huge. He's a Lurch.
Different crowd in the building last night IMO. It's very odd that a Saturday night game isn't on the 26-game plan, but last night's wasn't, and while I suspect many used exchange vouchers, there seemed to be a lot of folks who were new or at least out of their normal seats. I was sitting near the glass and there was a lot of glass-banging (which is typically frowned upon here) and a lot of yelling at the players but not from folks who sounded like they follow the team, just yelling names on the backs of jerseys. Loud though, even after it appeared the game was out of reach, at least fans were still representing.

That was painful. All those great shots and not a one got through. My husband said Chuck mentioned "shut out" at the beginning of the 3rd, so I was hopeful. They did skate better in the 3rd. It was just an all around bad day. The Pack couldn't pull out one more (which means Duke is going to walk all over GT today), and the poor Canes looked like they were playing the third game in a row.
BTW, what the heck was with everyone losing their edges all night? Ray went down twice almost in a row. It was like their legs were dead weights. And the passing. I hope they are going to be doing passing drills all day at practice. Horrible.

I'm the one that pointed out Cole makes as much as Knuble, but I'm also pretty sure it's common knowledge that I've been begging for the boat carrying Cole to leave harbor since about halfway through 06-07 (and so disappointed when it suddenly came back to the docks).
So intolerant of the intolerant.
The whole team didn't look good last night, I just had to pick my whipping boy.
(Sidenote: Knuble, since 02-03, has not had a point total below 46 and has fluctuated up and down. Right now he's on pace for his highest point total in years thanks to Ovechkin and Semin. Cole, who had an EXCELLENT year prior to his injury in 05-06, has been on a pretty steady decline. 59 points went up to 61 (with 11 more games), then down to 51, 42 and this year he's sittin pretty at 9. I realize he's had a ton of injuries, and it's an unfortunate situation, but why on earth do you sign him to a two year deal based on 07 numbers.)
Insert flames of how I have no idea the intangibles he brings to the team below.
SouthernHockeyChick
03-14-2010, 11:25 PM
LOL. I always get a good laugh when people label someone disagreeing with them as intolerance.
I don't have any comment to make on intangibles, personally. I think there are decent arguments to be made against Cole's contract.
I just think the Knuble comparison is a silly way to make it.
WillLikeWhoa091
03-15-2010, 01:46 AM
Intolerance seems to be a buzzword people like to throw around. Figured I'd toss one in just to spice it up a bit. As far as it's application here, there are a few posters that always seem to disagree with anything I post to the point where I'm pretty sure I'm just not liked.
As far as the Knuble comparison, it's the one my Dad and I talked about once the free-agent frenzy was done. I looked at Mike Knuble (I was following Philly pretty closely last season) and I looked at Erik Cole then got my "wtf?" face on. I just tend to stick with it.
(And personally, I like hearing the people that make me go "huh!?" better than a kid coming on the radio going "Oh man we lost the game!" or "I think the Canes played good.")

After 2 years of missing playoffs, and the possibility of it happing again - Cole came back and (perhaps coincidentally) the team got hot.
Sure, maybe JR overpaid, but it's also easy to overlook that players have to actually AGREE to go somewhere when they are a FA. It's too simplistic to say Player X can be substituted for Player Y because all things are not equal when making the comparison. Unless we're talking about how how Knuble wanted to come here for that money - it's dreaming to presume we could have gotten the same player for the same money.
So, what players out there make Jussi Jokinen money? Just for a 'fair' comparison. ;)

Unless we're talking about how how Knuble wanted to come here for that money - it's dreaming to presume we could have gotten the same player for the same money.
BINGO.
My original point about that Cole/Knuble comment was that it's fantastic to throw out these player contract/value comparisons- sitting from where we all sit (far outside of the GM's suite)and then say "way to go JR" as if we were ever in any Mike Knuble sweepstakes in the first damn place.
Very cute and lovely to have this conversation, but when you're likely not in the convo to begin with, it's all pretty moot. IIRC, Knuble signed with WSH nearly immediately on 7/1 so, it's likely he and his people had an idea of where the best fit would be and we weren't in that mix. Period. So the GM makes his decision on what he's going to do with his team and he did it. On top of that, Knuble is a goal scorer. Always has been. Nobody here (I hope) has confused #26 with being a natural goal scorer.
JR took a gamble this season and LOST. He believed/hoped that the momentum from last spring would be there for one more year -- he didn't realize his "older" team would not yield the results that we had last spring. We didn't have enough in the tank to do it again. He blew it and he's doing course correction earlier than he anticipated. For as ticked off at him as I've been about certain matters/players, He's done what he can to fix it, and he'll likely do more in July to fix it some more.
There are tons of players and contracts in this league that won't/don't make sense to the "outside" (e.g. outside of their team) and #26's contract probably is one of them.
Saturday night was a partial glimpse of what this season has been. They had a tough go of it Sat. But I wasn't expecting us to win every game til the end of the season and "do something special" like all these talking heads have been implying could happen.

As far as it's application here, there are a few posters that always seem to disagree with anything I post to the point where I'm pretty sure I'm just not liked.
Well as far as I'm concerned, I thought someone else made the comparison here and I didn't hear the name of the caller who said that on 99.9 so, I wasn't associating you with the comment at all. It was equal-opportunity disagreement from me.

Since this has turned into stuffing Cole under the bus, it wouldn't surprise me to see him bought out at the end of the year unless something changes between now and then. J.R. would save a million and create a roster spot. I'm not usually a big fan of buyouts but when you get to the last year of a contract it makes sense in some cases. Nobody is going to trade for Cole at 3 million for next year.
