Should we take a chance and pick him up? We'd have the first dibs on him if he were waived.
I say take a chance in him! he has been one the best back up for the last 3 seasons almost, and he isn't that expensive.
I don't think we would be any worse off with him over weekes.

Hell yes. It'd be a no-lose situation. Patty D is making, what, $900,000 this year? If Manny is only making $200K more, I'm sure we could work something out. A Manny-Weekes combo would be bliss.
Problem is, we already dumped him once. If I recall correctly, somebody had said that there were some bad feelings between the franchise and Manny. Is this true?
But yes. We'd be stupid not to.
In fact, the proposition makes me giddy like a schoolgirl.

Oh yes, oh yes. He made the move down here, but didn't wear the Sightless Eye for a single minute--he was sent down to our then-affiliate in Springfield, and was highly incensed over it because he was passed over for (IIRC) Jason "The Fighting Scorpion" Muzzatti and was effectively told by manglement that he'd be left to rot in the minors even though he felt he'd earned a spot with the big club.
There's no love lost between him and JR/Mo, I assure you.

I'd definitely take him in a heartbeat without a second thought..
Hey Manny, let us make amends by giving you more NHL games than you would get in Detroit! So, we traded him for "future considerations" to the Kings.. what did we get in return?

Cam is always a wealth of info on past moves.. I don't know how she remembers it all!

I'm kind of obsessive about collecting tales from the old days, because I want to help keep alive the history of the team despite the efforts of some to bury all but a few bits of it.

Zip. He was traded for a conditional pick in 1999 draft, and did not meet the conditions, causing Carolina to forfeit the pick.
[Note: I said 'zip', meaning 'nothing', not 'Zepp', who we drafted in 2001.]

The Canes really need to do something about goaltending...Weekes hasn't bothered to show up yet and Pat D. is not ready IMHO...I think this is the biggest question mark for the entire season..we are loaded elsewhere...but goaltending!!

Weekes STILL hasn't shown up yet?! Grrrreat... My confidence in the dude is going down if he doesn't join his Cane buddies in practicing before September 11th. I'd like to think that Weekes would do better without Irbe on the bench and all, but if he isn't well conditioned/practiced...

I had heard that Weekes was working really hard with a trainer at home in Canada so that he would be ready for camp when it starts. Could just be rumor, but it makes sense to me.

Where did you hear that at?
Wish we could confirm that as that would be great news!

I can't recall where I heard it. Probably, it was mentioned in some article I read.

I wish Weekes was in practice too.. However, keep in mind that he had surgery at the end of the season, he may be doing special training in light of that. Hope it went well, never heard a word about it (that I remember). Patrick should be living at the RecZone.

Another thing to consider is that he may be working with his goalie coach back in Canada. If he feels like it's important for him to spend time with a dedicated goalie coach, he's not going to get that here - at least until camp (at which point there will be a small herd of them here).
That being said, I really really hope he shows up next week to get re-adjusted to the heat. I'm sure the thing last season was a fluke, but lets change up the routine a bit just to be sure! :)
