Okay it's mid-July and I'm bored. Here's what I've got so far in terms of upcoming events to mark your calendars...
According to the RecZone calendar, Camp Brind’Amour (TM andyt) starts on August 23rd.
http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l83/kellja00/RecZone_Aug-Sept_2010.jpg
The day before, on August 22nd, watch for Hurricanes and other celebrities (http://www.golfclassic.org/celebrities.php) to tee off in the Jimmy V Celebrity Golf Classic, being held again this year at the Lonnie Poole Golf Center on the NC State campus.
Training Camp (http://hurricanes.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=531910) begins September 17th.
I've heard that the Canes (defending champions) are participating in the Traverse City rookie tournament again this year but haven't seen anything official from the team. Tournament dates are September 11th through 15th.
Friesen 5K is on September 12th. Haven't seen an official announcement on this yet either.
Prospect Jeff Skinner has been invited to Canada's development camp for the IIHF World Juniors, and Brian Dumoulin, Justin Faulk, and Mark Alt have been invited to Team USA's camp. Camps will be held sometime in August (dates not confirmed yet).

sooo, pertaining to "camp brind'amour" can he even show up, now? wouldnt it violate the CBA?
SoCalcaniac
07-21-2010, 07:39 AM
How would it violate the CBA? Since it's an informal gathering of players; I'd guess unless he was acting as a FT Regular "employee" of the Canes, leading some type of structured work out regimine or team sanctioned thing, then yeah, could be a violation- but I'd imagine it wouldn't be a big deal..... ?

Something like that violates NCAA rules, but I don't know about the CBA.

I don't think it violates NCAA rules either. The players pay individually for the ice. They're not being coached by their college coaches, so it's not an unpermitted contact. IIRC, Kai Kantola skated with them last summer and then went on to his senior year at Bowling Green.
The prospect camp wasn't a violation as long as the players paid their own way. Otherwise, there would have been a problem with the U16 AAA goalie participating. And if that was OK, I can't imagine this not being OK.
We also don't know if Brindy is even on the Canes payroll as a coach. They said he was going to transition into that role, but they've never said exactly what he'll be doing.

yes, i was looking at it from a canes staff member leading it means it's an unofficial camp, but a camp none the less. it'd violate provisions of the off season, which are there to protect players from being compelled to be back to work before theyre being paid.... page 82 says that teams cant hold a mandatory nor voluntary camp, with the exception rookie camp.

Hey folks, I just read elsewhere that the early word is this year's Caniac Carnival will be Saturday, September 18th. Nothing has been confirmed but this was information received directly from someone in the Canes organization. So just giving the heads up since I know folks like to try to plan accordingly.
September 18th also happens to be the first day of training camp, which ought to make practice a little interesting to say the least!

I'm trying to remember--- did we not have a couple of seasons where the CC and training camp started on the same day? (Pre-lockout IIRC) I'm getting fuzzy w/ pre/post lockout, lol. Maybe it was the last two seasons before the lockout. 02-03 seems to really be strong in my mind.

OMG, YES, you're right. I just saw this post and you just gave me the flashback of all flashbacks. I think I honestly blocked that out of my head because that was pretty awful. I just remember how crazy noisy it was in the building, and then the silence and how freaked out the players looked for that little bit.
Here's to that not happening again.
I was really happy to see Mike McKenzie get a shot with the Checkers. He really seemed to be a determined guy when we saw him down here last year; a real hard worker, and one of the more focused/attentive attendees at the camp. Funny to see his hockey dad come out from vacation to tweet with pride.

So I'll bump this up to spice up our wait for the season to START. ;)
If you saw that tweet last week from the Canes, you know that they went back to the well and opened a second Eye store back in Crabtree Valley Mall; We were there for a separate reason, but decided to check it out and if you've not been there, you gotta go. Wayyyy better and much more prominent spot in the mall just at the entrance to the food court (not in that back little store front they had before the lockout killed the thing) it's probably about the same size at the current Eye, maybe a little bigger- huge windows and a they're getting the whole thing up and running; lots of selection, and things to buy.
So we were chatting it up with the store manager and he casually informed us that they will be having their "real grand opening" on 9/16; Best Buy is now a Canes sponsor and will be installing huge flat screens so passers by can watch whatever they put up on the screens. When the Canes are in Helsinki, they'll be broadcasting the games on those screens. Pretty cool. Big news on that grand opening on 9/16, Our #15 will be in the store for an autograph session that afternoon and 96 Rock will be broadcasting live all afternoon. More details to come he said, but was wanting to let us know we need to come back on the 16th to see the whole store finished, and to "meet Too-oo-mo" and they'll be having giveaways and such. He also mentioned, the plan is to have "a player every month" visit the store, and that the lease is "at least" for whole season- and they'll see how it goes.
Hopefully, they'll restore the presence they had when they had that old store and the store in Cary Town Center. *hopefully* But that was so long ago, the good news is that this spot is far better the the others were.
Sooooo keep an eye out for tweets and Canes Connnect, and mark your calendars :) this should be a great grand opening!

There is an article on ch.com that shows why this will always be Camp Brind'Amour. I can't link to it, but it's called "Behind the Scenes, Canes Working Hard" on Branecky's blog. There is a picture of Brindy going through a kick boxing exercize at the Atletic Performance Center in north Raleigh. And according to Pete "he's still the hardest working guy".

He was in borrowed gear yesterday but back in his own equipment today. Still looks a little rusty, but only a little. Haven't seen him fall yet, once I see him falling I know he's back to full throttle, but he's in full practice mode now times 2 days and doesn't seem to hesitate taking a shot. I can't tell he's favoring his shoulder. Stayed late yesterday to work on wristers and one-timers, today Pete moved the goals in and made them skate laps so no one stayed afterwards.

I have been buried with work stuff so I can be free as a bird the week of 10/4 and not deal with work, so I've only scrolled twitter in the late evening and hadn't been on here since Tuesday or something.
I'm thinking the same thing E is- He wasn't in any of the media "stuff" they didn't even mention him - kinda odd, so no wonder clueless, I mean Chip didn't see him, or know he was in.

Sorry about that, I can't tweet and text and take pictures all at the same time. I figured you'd get the tweet. I usually can't be bothered to even tweet while I'm there but I made an exception when I saw the Finn. With all the media over at Wakefield I think I was actually the twitter exclusive from practice.
Tuomo was at the RecZone yesterday. He was not part of the media day at Wakefield. There were only 8 players at media day - Cole, Corvo, Gleason, Kostopoulos, LaRose, Samsonov, Staal, Ward - along with the coaching staff and management. They played golf from 9:30 am until 1:30 or so then did the interviews.
The other 22 players were at the RecZone at their normal time including the aforementioned Finn.
Chip obviously didn't know Tuomo skated yesterday because when he first filed his "Canes Now" report he said today was his first informal practice. I see where he has now gone back to edit it to say he spoke after "an informal practice."
And I can't express in words how disappointed I am that you don't even have my flickr site favorited. :(

Is anyone trying to find a way to keep tabs on the Lil' Canes in the Traverse City tournament? It looks like we had a practice at 8:30 AM today, then played our first game at 3 PM.
We lost. (2-1 v Minnesota)
Skinner had 7 shots but none fell; Mike McKenzie took 5 shots and got the lone goal in the third (assist to Austin Levi). His dad will be proud. Mike Murphy in goal with 21 stops.

Yeah, I was trying all afternoon to get info on twitter. There's no video or even audio coverage, @KyleHanlin is tweeting from the tournament but they had signal problems in the arena so his coverage was spotty and even pointstreak wasn't updating until sometime after the game. Hopefully they'll get it resolved before tomorrow's games. I hear we were much improved in the third period so hopefully that will bode well for the rest of the tournament.
ETA: Some comments from Kyle via twitter (have no idea if he's planning to publish an article later so I'll copy them here):

I was under the impression that tomorrow is just a workout and not a skate, but I guess it's possible they could be on the ice. I don't know if it's open though; it's not on the RBCC calendar and it was never on the RecZone calendar either.
And there's no practice Friday either because that's their official first day of camp with all the off-ice stuff - physicals, etc.
ETA: Called RBCC Security and that is correct, off-ice workouts tomorrow, next skate is Saturday morning for training camp/Carnival.

Completely escaped me on Friday with the physicals- Duh, I know two people who work next door to the docs offices where they go for physicals- or they used to, can't remember if they changed it up. Anyway, I know better, lol.
Camp Brind 'Amour seems like it went long this year- or I just lost track of the days. Now Training Camp just rolled up on me. I'm glad we'll be in the RBCC at least for the first day, I'm so not looking forward to the RZ on a Sunday. Thanks GaGa.

Baby Canes take on the Baby Bolts tonight. All I know is I'm hoping that Skinner can translate that 5 point beatdown of CLB to the NHL.
Skinner added 2 more points tonight with an assist on Kennedy's PP goal in the first, and came up clutch to get himself the game-winning goal in the second OT (after an apparent Skinner goal was waived off in the first OT). Toddler Canes win 4-3. Besides Skinner and Kennedy, Shugg got one in the second, and Shakori Hills Staal got an unassisted goal in the third.
Although the Canes place third, their winning percentage (3-1; 0.667%) is second overall.

I swear this amuses me for hours... New roster photos are going up on the Canes website (in various stages). According to Sundheim almost all of the players smiled for their roster photos this year.
:D
And this is my vote so far for best roster hair (http://hurricanes.nhl.com/club/player.htm?id=8473444).

I know. WTF?
Looks like E Staal is leading in the "like" category. Little brother is in the top 5...along w/C Ward and of course, Ruutu. Rounding out is Jussi.

Re: roster -- Maybe it happened last year and I managed to ignore it, but I see 1990 has shown up as a birth year on our roster. Oy.

Was that the look he was going for? When he got through fixing his hair in the mirror, did he step back and say "Oh yeah".
That looks like my hair before I shower in the morning.
