Canes expect Vasicek in camp

The Carolina Hurricanes say they hope to clear up the future of Josef Vasicek by the end of the week while the future of goaltender Arturs Irbe remains uncertain.
General manager Jim Rutherford is confident Vasicek will accept the team's contract offer and will be at training camp when it opens later this month.
The restricted free agent is the last unsigned player for Carolina. In 57 games last season, he notched just 20 points but was hampered by a persistent back injury which forced him to miss 25 games.
The situation with Irbe is not so easy. Rutherford has been unable to find another NHL team to take on veteran netminder, so the American Hockey League appears to be the next best option.
However, Irbe will not be making the trip to Carolina's minor league team in Lowell. Due to the fact the Hurricanes are sharing the affiliate with Calgary this year, there is just one goaltending spot available. Carolina plans to fill the void with prospect Rob Zepp, leaving Irbe in limbo for the time being.
Carolina still owes Irbe $5.2-million over the next two years.
