Let's see another hard-fought win, boys!! And... another good night from the JET LINE!!! :D
I think I'll wear the rally monkey hat tonight in honor of it being Halloween Eve!!

LET'S GO 'CANES!!

Excited to see that 'JET' line. Hopefully last night carries on over.
Pens/Flyers had a beat them up game. First 23 seconds, 2 fights, and within the first minute each team had like 4 guys in the box  Hopefully my 2nd team beat them up a bit and they are feeling a tad sore.
Also, saw some tweets that Pittsburgh will be in their baby blues so we are wearing white tonight. I think I'm tired of looking at the white jersey's by now

Where's the black jersey this year? Seems like we'd have worn them by now.
As I just realize this is only the second home game so it's really not been that long.
I'd just like more electricity than we had Wednesday night. I hope it's a competitive enough game that we get to show Skinner what all the guys were apparently telling him about. And a win would be awfully nice as well. :D

VERY excited for tonight-we'll be heading over around 3:30-ish to tailgate and hang out. It's so pretty out today.
I'm with SHC, would love for this to be a more "electric" everything not only for Skinner but to get that feel that our bldg can bring when it's full of crazy Caniacs getting wild in the bldg.
I'm looking forward to the JET line doing something amazing for the home crowd. :0 I'll be that we see some signs referencing the JET line, lol.
Should be a real interesting night- Looks like this is just about sold out if it isn't already.
See you all tonight!

We had a single ticket that became available late last night. Boyfriend put it on Craigslist this morning and we must have had 5 calls in a matter 10 minutes wanting it. And here we thought we were going to have trouble selling a single
Then again it always seems the games with the Pens are in high demand.

We're wearing white tonight so the Pens can wear their blue throwbacks. I don't have my calendar in front of me, but I don't think we wear the blacks until the maybe 11/11 against the Flyers?

We'll wear the black jerseys on 11/6 (Panthers) and 11/11 (Flyers) and then again on 11/29 (Stars), so just around the corner and three times in November.

My crew will be there about 4ish. My wife is taking one of her "healthy friends" which has impacted my tailgating. I'm not sure about this "healthy eating" thing for a hockey game. Why do I have to adjust to eat healthy for a day. Why can't her friend eat unhealthy for once. My body may reject the food as a foreign substance.
Looking forward anyway. Beautiful day for tailgating. Luke DeCock wrote in Thursday's paper that Wednesday was perfect, but he must have bumped his head or something. I don't think 85 degrees and humid is good tailgating weather (unless it's the playoffs). Now 65 degrees is perfect.
Let's keep the good vibrations flowing with another good game and a win over the Crosby's. As a favor to me, can somebody put that dirty, no good Malkin into the Canes bench with a good, legal hit. I hate that guy. He's a punk that likes to skate in late and get in a cheap shot.

Malkin's a game-time decision with a bruised knee according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
And per Chip on twitter, Cam is confirmed in net and no planned line changes.

Fleury lost again last night, so I bet we'll be seeing Brent Johnson in the Pens lineup tonight. He's been stellar lately. Let's hope that's not the case if he's manning the crease.

Shut out at home two games in a row.
I would say that the boys need to find their offense (and seriously... as many PP as we had tonight it's hard to not have something to show), but at the same time... Johnson played an amazing game. We did have 33 shots on goal.

I feel like I'm there every night with the defense we have.
And I don't mean we have All-Star defenseman. I mean were playing the kind of defense you usually see in the All-Star game.

Pack your bag folks cause we are going back to Finland. Apparently we can only score during home games in Finland.
Had a full row of Pens fans behind us, but for some miracle they were quiet and barely cheered when the Pens scored. Although the one kept his sunglasses on all game and kept saying "yeah its gonna be 4-0, Cam is overrated". To which I did have to turn around and say "well the Flower apparently isn't getting watered cause he has wiltered."
These boys need to figure out how to score at home and in a hurry.

And Penguins fans are really not far at all behind Buffalo fans. Based on what we could see from above, this is the first game I was glad not to be in 119 this year.
Oh they are completely in the BUF realm. The first fight in 119 was a guy sucker punched by a Pens fan and then he got a beer dumped on him, then two guys basically throwing body blows, that had to be separated; Then in the Grande Finale, we had "Lemeiux" in the throwback Pens jersey, literally beating the sh** out of "Schenn" in the Leafs jersey, knuckles and all to the head and face, and "Schenn" was bloodied like some UFC bull****. People were screaming- I had a complete and utter flashback to May, 2006. The sassy, smart ass looks on the faces of the combatants, and the Cop rolling his eyes at all of their stories as I was walking to the ladies room, gave me that whole feel of the police state we were in when the Slugs rolled in for the playoffs that year. I told hub, I'm seriously thinking of not going to games that Pens fans attend. They are just so flipping obnoxious, I can't deal with it. My husband the native Pittsburgher, is also of the same mind, he's just so sick of it.
On to the game- We took huge steps backwards. What's more disappointing than 6 periods of shutout hockey on home ice, is the fact that we've done this in front of 2 sell out crowds. Absolutely nothing to cheer for. People dying to cheer for a goal. any goal, and we're nowhere.
I'm needing someone to explain to me why in God's green earth The Coach decided to start messing with the lines? Specifically the line that was sizzinling- The Jet line- why split them up? They had all kinds of jam last night- and before that; they've been our best line for many stretches. I know I wanted to see Skinner with Staal early- but it's clear there is chemistry with Ruutu and Cole and they change up. WTH. I'm not sure what the hell to think of our D, nobody seems to be able to stay on their skates, able to shoot the puck (when it's supposedly their forte) and we fall down at the most inopportune times. I felt like hurling myself down the steps just to stop the madness.
We didn't have pop tonight; we got beat by a desparate team- and we didn't match it. That I can't accept. Brent Johnson is a good goalie. He's not superman. We just made him look like it. How many damn pucks got passed into guys skates, or behind them, or we had near misses right in the traffic areas?
I keep telling hub to remind ourselves not to listen to the Aftermath when we have games like this- the chick who called in and says "why didn't we put Justin Peters in ......" and Forslund had to do his Cam Ward apologist schtick: Makes me want to pull everrrry hair out of my head. If you think Cam is the "problem"? you got problems. He just can't do every damn thing. Honestly.
This kerfuffle we have at 4th line- we need to resolve it.I know they're supposed to decide tommorow- I personally am not seeing a whole heck of a lot out of O'Sulivan- he looks indifferent now. Probably lost his confidence cause he's been sitting. Tlusty- meh. But then again I'm partial to Dalpe & Bowman so I shut probably not comment. ;)
My head still hurts. I was hoping if I got this all posted, it'd be gone by then. UGH.
We purchased one of the holiday pucks- I got #12. Other highlight of the evening- I hope they post it on ch.com- they have this "At home" segment with a player- kinda like MTV Cribs- it was Chad. HILARIOUS.... "this is where the magic happens"......

After sitting beside, a mother, a father, and a kid (less than 10 for sure!) in Pens gear during our last playoff run, and listening to this kid, A KID, screaming "Canes Suck!!! Canes Suck!!!Canes Suck!!!Canes Suck!!!" and "I hate the Hurricanes!!!!" and some other just awful stuff (no foul language but still, it wasn't nice), and having the dad egg him on while the mother is just sitting there, not knowing what to do, I haven't been back to a game when the Pens are in town.

Just got back in... it's always good to have crap served lukewarm down the gullet, isn't it? Not sure why Mo started switching lines around so quickly, but it's Mo, and that's what he does, but it's the clearest sign of defeat that I can think of. It's piss-poor coaching. Period.
Corvo is a mess, O'Sullivan does look indifferent as they come, and dump-and-chase hockey is useless without someone willing to forecheck. Everyone moved slowly. I had to wait in line at the Eye while people in Pens jerseys bought Canes gear (the two-timing b@stards). My high point was having a fully functional automatic paper-towel dispenser in the bathroom. It was restocked and everything. Beauty.
I do wonder how the dude or dudette who sounds the goal horn must feel though. What a sad gig.

And I'm not saying Canes fans don't but, it seems like its always that NY team, that Buffalo team, that Pens team, sometimes that Philly team, and Leafs fans have been known to cause trouble too.
But droves of people aren't moving here (yet LOL) from Florida, CA, Dallas, heck...from the west or Northwest I'll say.

Mo still = .500 hockey. We still have no Power Play (0 for friggin 6!).
Only redeeming parts of this game
a) I didn't have to engage with the pr!cks in the stadium

You wouldn't believe the jerks we had behind us in 128. 4 Pens fans, started out great but as the drinking went on, one of them was obnoxious. The first time our crowd boo'd Orpick, he actually said "Did he do something to them, why are they booing?" Great fan, huh? As the game went on and the drunker he got, when the boo's happened again he yelled "Hit someone! Break their necks! Woo!". I was so furious that I made my husband leave with 6 minutes left, I was worried he'd mouth off to the guy.

It was like OMG Crosby is taking a faceoff, OMG Crosby has the puck. I bet they get all excited when Crosby takes a sh!t too. We had this one lady in a Crosby jersey who would stand everytime Crosby had the puck and cheer. It's like lady i'm sure he isn't looking for a cougar so sit the hell down.

There have been 2 really nice crowds there to see nothing. This has been a fun team to watch on TV. I hope they don't lose the home crowd. A cheap team on the ice and and a full arena would help the financial end of things.

Just curious.....did the person that posted this actually ASK what the "mandatory postgame workout was"? Did they ASK who decides if/what the post game workout is?
KF - I realize you posted this is a joke, but I have to wonder about locker room access to interview players that turns into a photo opp that's unrelated. If the person wanted to know what the post-game workout was...why didn't they just ask? Or is innuendo more fun?

I went over to Canes Country to see and it was posted as part of the post-game article, so I'm guessing it was one of their editors that has locker room access. CC has press credentials, so they would fall into the blogger/journalist category.
Like I said, if you want to know what the post game workout was, why not just ask? After back to backs, for all we know it was a stretching program.
superdave
10-31-2010, 11:33 AM
From what I heard last year at HurricanesU, Pete Friesen has some guys do some cardio on the bikes based on the number of minutes they played. It could be as simple as the heading for a list of players for something like that. I can't believe that Mo would bag skate the guys postgame after back to backs.
SouthernHockeyChick
10-31-2010, 11:40 AM
I think the bag skate reference was total tongue-in-cheek.
I didn't personally even see the picture as anything more than an announcement of exactly what the words said....something I would imagine is sort of common (a postgame workout, I mean)
I don't go to CC so I didn't see the original so I have no clue if the original poster added some misleading (or correct) context but, I didn't personally read anything into the posting here.
Kinda confused about what's to be bent out of shape about I guess.
But shutout in two straight sold-out home games....the only two so far....I hope they at least got a harsh talking to.

Not bent out of shape, I signed my post with /petpeeve. And I acknowledged that KF's post was a joke.
If you are covering a sporting event, have access to the locker room, and shoot a snapshot of a team communication to include in the article, it just seems strange that you wouldn't actually ask about it. Just my opinion. Or maybe they post them after every game so the inclusion of it isn't supposed to be "news" of any kind?
Just an observation about the blogger community (not the first time I've seen a team communication posted) as compared to the beat writer/journalists.
edit: I acknowledge that I could be way off base. Maybe this is no big deal at all - I didn't go to journalism school and don't have a press pass. I do think that it would be unlikely that a blogger would go into a visiting locker room after a 0-3 loss and snap a photo of their whiteboard notes when the access granted is for the purpose of interviewing the players. But if they have, then I will admit that it's my own personal pet peeve and not at all unprofessional. Maybe if we beat Philly 0-3 or the Rangers 0-3, they can try it on Lavi and Torts.

I'm not intending to defend bloggers vs journalists. I don't go to CC for my news for a reason and I'm annoyed with the migration of the N&O coverage from news story to blog for a reason. I guess since I didn't consider the pic to be coming from a news source I wasn't expecting integrity.

I missed the game after 2 OT soccer games out of town. I've heard/read bits of complaint about the line juggling. Did that happen before the 3rd?
Of course, I didn't watch so couldn't possibly form opinion, but just wondered if there were signs that certain players were hurting/tired more than others and they were trying to create line that had the most *something* in an effort to get something going.

I do think that posting a picture like that with no explanation implies something that may have not been the case.
As far as the line juggling goes, I don't have a clue why it was done. Maybe we could get an explanation for that on the dry erase board. Rosey and Staal had some chemistry building. The JET line was clicking. I think the real issue with lines is to try to do something different with the Sutter line while leaving the top two alone (since they seemed to have been working). It seems like Mo is constantly searching for 3 balanced lines and I'd love to see one or two that are scoring.

Did anyone notice how stupid the Pens fans get whenever Crosby touches the puck or better yet when he skates up to the faceoff circle? It was like OMG Crosby is taking a faceoff, OMG Crosby has the puck. I bet they get all excited when Crosby takes a sh!t too. We had this one lady in a Crosby jersey who would stand everytime Crosby had the puck and cheer. It's like lady i'm sure he isn't looking for a cougar so sit the hell down.
i'm pretty sure I'd do the same damn thing. In fact, when he gets the puck i go "****, crosby has the puck." "**** crosby is taking a faceoff"... love him or hate him, the guy is a threat every second of the game. I'd love to have a player that dangerous.

^I just think it was a bit obnoxious. I don't see Caps fans pissing themselves with excitement whenever Ovechkin touches the puck. I get Crosby is a great player, but what I don't is the obnoxiousness bc he's on the ice.
And note to self, leaves jokes out of losing GDT

No - I totally got your joke...it was the photo itself!
And I'm sure I'd be totally pissed if I'd experienced that as well, but when I read it, I did think that we are seeing the beginnings of that with Skinner here. It happens with AO as well.
I didn't mean to miss the game last night, but ended up getting back into Raleigh way later than expected. I long swore off Sabres games, maybe I'll do the same with the Pens. At least I didn't sell my seats to the enemy last night.

We have company visiting from out of town this weekend. So I paid my money and bought tickets to this one. Sat in the upper bowl for the first time since before the lockout because company didn't want to pay the price to sit in lower bowl.
This was my first game in the building in a couple years. I didn't go to a single game last year, which is odd for me. Honestly, I won't be back again for a while. I get entirely too invested in hockey and I had such a visceral reaction to the absolute garbage I saw on the ice last night that I was still fuming this morning. The company was not happy either... they asked that we not go to a hockey game next time they come to visit.....
If I ever go back to the arena, I will never sit in the upper bowl again. I always thought their new fancy speaker system sounded like crap from my lower bowl seats. I thought I just had a bad spot in the arena... Honestly, how do folks in the upper bowl stand it? At least where I sat in the lower bowl the volume level was somewhat muted. The shrieking disaster from my seats last night had me covering my ears and wishing I had my nice ear plugs. I know I'm a little odd in that I'm an audiophile and sell high end audio/video stuff on the side. But that was easily the worst audio experience I've ever had, and I've been to some really crappy live music shows before.... it's downright offensive how bad it was... and played waaaaaay too loud. My ears are still ringing right now... their sound engineer, if they have one, should be fired, tar and feathered, and then shot.
As for the play of the players on the ice..... what's that saying about if you have nothing nice to say? I will break it for just one comment.....They were half a second at least too slow all night with absolutely everything they did... everything telegraphed and executed a beat too slow...
ok... maybe one more.... my better half, bless her heart, is not a hockey fan... she liked the upper bowl seats because she could actually follow the play better... but when she starts a running commentary and predicting exactly where we are going to pass on our breakouts, we're maybe being a bit too predictable.. also, when she asks why we keep shooting the puck into their end, don't go after it, and basically give the puck back to them again and again, something's not right with our team...
I'm not touching the coaching aspects of the game last night.....
it's back to tv watching for me... at least then I can just stop the DVR recording or fast forward through the crap....it's my own fault for adjusting my expectations higher after we played somewhat decently a few nights so far... I thought we'd be at least somewhat competent at home.... oh well.... here's hoping for the ticket holders sake that we start playing better at home....

and he is a guy who makes others around him better...not to turn this into a love fest for Crosby, but how often in his career has he had a top flight winger? yet, they win and he produces...
as for the game...this team isnt very good on defense, and doesnt have enough offense to be able to roll 3 lines with scoring ability against better teams...they will get shut down every time like they have the past 2 home games. Sure they beat the rangers...but the defense wasnt any better in that game than against the pens...difference was the rangers defense was pretty average and the Pens defense played like a well oiled machine

The youth movement on offense this season never bothered me. The defense on the other hand, did. Corvo has never been a shut down guy. Babs, no comment. Joni suffers from "shiny object syndrome". Harrison is a journeyman at best. McBain is young and is going to make mistakes. That leaves Gleason as the only stay at home guy. This is a defense that is going to have trouble with a young offense. Cam is going to have a long season feeling like he has to pitch a shutout every night.

Who the hell needs wingers when you have two other centers on your team who would be top liners on most other teams in the league? I'm not attempting to argue Crosby isn't the best player in the league, just that this argument hardly means anything when teams have to leverage playing their best defense against him vs who they have left over for Malkin and Staal. You can bet he'd have a harder road if he had the supporting cast he'd have here, winger or no.

Hadn't the Pens lost 3 in a row? Sometimes you can't manufacture the same desperation as your opponent, regardless of if you think you can.
Good news is, we've only lost 2 in a row thus far this season and only once (I think). The Canes managed the crazy October at .500. So far so good.
(Then again, I'm not expecting a consistent team game in and game out so I maybe that makes a difference.)

I was reminded last night that this is a "rebuilding" year. Are we supposed to be good at this point?
I mean I love winning as much as anyone else, but the dissappointment is a little easier to think about when you see it in the proper light. We're not the Sabres or the Devils (who are supposed to be good).
Like nccanes said, we got through a nuts October at .500. Let's hope for improvement. The postseason is a long way away right now and no need to worry just yet.

^That's the way I'm looking at it Will.
I can only presume that youth is going to adjusting to what being an NHLer is all about (opponents, pace, schedule) and will understandably be inconsistent.
And then look at our vets: virtually everyone on defense has never been described as consistent and people have made (fan) careers *****ing about Cole, LaRose, and Samsonov and their inconsistencies (or how their presence on Line [fill in the blank] or power play unit [fill in the blank] is not justified).
Then again, I was only at one of the home games (though I paid for both).

The good news for me/those of us who have to go to 39 more of these games, is that we play NYI and FLA this week at home, and we won't be overly distracted by the nonsense that comes with playing WSH or PIT.
It took me the whole day to get over that mess from last night. HOWEVER, I'm not over the line juggling and why it was thought to be a "good idea".
So with Bowman & Dalpe shipped off, maybe O'Sullivan will grace us with some jump. I don't think I've ever been so disappointed in a player's seemingly nonchalance in a game that seeing him last night. Bowman and Dalpe were killing themselves to try and stay- and made me laugh with their lobbying in the press, but from my perspective, it showed me those boys weren't just "happy to be here" they want to do something and wanted their shot. They'll get it down the road I know this, but I know just by observing them in games they played, and regular old practice, they were trying to impart that they are serious. O'Sullivan, I have no clue where his head is, but he better get it straight, and the Coaches better figure out what to do with him. /rant over
On to Philly & the equally mystifying/aggrevating Flyers and our former Coach, who I have been joking with my hub saying "I think Peter is going to quit coaching that team before they even have a chance to fire him, those fools do everything they can to lose momentum and shoot themselves in the foot" (i.e. taking horrific penalties- Joni can't touch them on that front)
I think I reconciled this would be a "long season" the whole rebuild, etc. I don't think we can be fans of a team or sport without wanting more/better for your team and hoping for wins.

I know these last two games have been hard to digest, but maybe this can help.
This year we are in a rebuilding year and no one really expects this team to do much. We had the worst schedule in franchise history, and likely in all of NHL history. We ended October at .500 with a 5-5-0 record.
Last year we had a team filled of experienced vets which alot of people expected this team to be a playoff team. Where did we sit at the end of October, 2-7-3.
These last two home games sucked no doubt, but its no where near as bad as last October was. Just remembering last year has me sick, and I'm just not quite there yet with this team.

KF- I do like your thought process, and I've reminded myself of last year, and just how brutal it was. I think I had put it out of my mind after last season ended, just to save my sanity. :0

just thinking out loud.... I'm not sure I get the "rebuild" moniker....
last night we iced:
Staal
Cole
Jokinen
Larose
Ruutu
O'Sullivan
Tommy K
Samsonov
Dwyer
Sutter
Tlusty
Skinner
I see 8 veterans and a 27 year old 4th liner who plays more like a veteran than his 81 NHL game experience would indicate (Dwyer). Sutter is technically in his third year. Young (and obviously hurt more than anyone is letting on based on the way he's taking faceoffs and his compete level in the dirty areas), but not a kid trying to find his way. Tlusty is an AHL'er who's not found a way to stick at this level. I can't believe we gave him a one way. I'd much rather have Dalpe or Bowman based on what I saw of them on tv versus Tlusty in person last night.... and Skinner, while a rookie, has played better than most of the veterans at times.
It's a young forward core overall, but not a rebuild full of kids... if anything, it's more veteran than it is rebuild....
Our D flat out stinks. Watching how the Penguins D pushed us to the outside, collapsed down, didn't allow us to just walk into the slot and shoot or come in unopposed on the goalie was a glaring counterpoint to watch...... and they didn't even have one of their top free agent Dmen playing last night.... It pains me beyond belief to say this, but Harrison was, in my opinion, one of the least offensive Dman out there last night... he only played a couple minutes and may have been exposed if he played more... but at least he didn't make nearly as many mistakes or play like pansies as much as the rest of them....
I can't believe how bipolar I feel about this team. I was really excited to go to the game last night. I was really looking forward to it.

I've felt that way for most of the season so far. And yes, it's extremely disturbing.
And I'm still picking who will go on my new jersey....and so far Dwyer leads the pack. And that's also disturbing (though I admit, I like him....I was just trying to find someone who gets at least 10 min a night).

You (and I mean that in the global sense) ask why Mo juggled the lines. It's in his DNA. It's what he does. Why didn't he call a TO when we went on the 5 on 3? A goal there would have gotten them back into it. He said in the post game that they just needed a goal for the crowd to carry them. Instead, Staal ended up with a 2:57 shift when we moved from 5 on 4 to 5 on 3 and back. That's good asset management?
Look, the man has 908 games as a head coach in the NHL. He has 383 wins. He has a SCF appearance and a conference finals appearance. He's won 40 games once. Once. And it was with Toronto. He has 2-90 point seasons. And 1 was with Toronto. He defines .500 coach. And you ask why he juggled the lines?
I am seriously questioning what Francis is doing. Is the terminal cheapness of this organization causing an issue, where he has to juggle 2 jobs? Our PP SUCKS. That's supposed to be his responsibility.
I understand this is a rebuilding year. I understand that we're bringing new players in. If you're going to rebuild, why bring O'Sullivan in? This can't be laid on Mo. This falls squarely in JRs lap. Look at it this way...the guys that should be the core of the team, those drafted between 2000 and 2004, we have Staal, Ward and indirectly Ruutu and Babchuk. Over 5 drafts, we have 4 full time NHL players. That's sad. So we have a huge gap between the youth and experienced guys. The drafting has been better lately, but we're paying the price for the substandard drafts earlier.

I agree with SSANGSTE... all the above and hope to see "if" Harrison gets more ice time, what stabilty he can offer on the blue line. He's never going to be flashy...we have enough of those back there, but so far, from what I've seen, he gets the puck out of the zone as good as anyone on the blueline. He's impressed me so far.

Who specifically is playing "the best" and who is not?
Obviously Skinner is playing great. I think Ruutu and Cole are playing very good as well.
For this franchise to go from the 2nd oldest in the league to the 2nd youngest (iirc), I think that qualifies as a youth movement/rebuild -- particularly when we've got a number of guys in Charlotte have been and will be here during the season.

For those of us who have been around a while with this team, that's nothing we aren't used to. Anyone who was around after 02-03 and especially 06-07 can call themselves a fan. Also, seems like anyone who jumped on during 05-06 and stayed on the year after is in it for the long run as exhibited by the attendance last year through November & December.
Me personally, being a continued supporter from 3,000 is being made all the more difficult by having a hubby who is driving me nuts with all his stress about the Oregon Ducks football team. I didn't even get as nutsoid as he is being during the 2006 SCF. I'm thisclose to shipping him off to central Oregon for the rest of college football season (or until they loose a game, which at this rate is looking less and less likely).
I just hope the media continues to be at least middle of the road but do you think we could generate a petition to boot Chip Alexander? :D
I actually prefer Luke to Chip... and no, I'm not taking crazy pills.
