BUT

On Joni Pitkanen...

The Sharks have interest in Joni, but the Canes would like them to possibly take Gleason along with Joni. The Canadiens apparently tried to get Pitkanen out of Carolina prior to trading for James Wisniewski.

TAKE GLEASON??

I think Ek has been hitting the NyQuil a little too hard.

Take Gleason? WTF? I'm sure they would.

Eklund hasn't had a decent source in Carolina. I know he's had a few hits, but I can't recall if San Jose has been one of them.

According to capgeek, SJ has about 1 mil in cap space...so there would have to be some $$$ coming back this way for even 1 of those guys.

Not to pick on Joni, but rest of team showed that for the most part, they can get the job done without him.

Would think we would get a pretty good return for him.

I'm an equal opportunity d-hater, so I have zero bias. But I suspect we could subtract any of our d-men and end up with a period of time where they weren't missed. Which probably just means they are all expendable.

What was the stat after we traded Babchuk for White? 1 win in 5 games or something.

Our d is nothing if not unpredictable!

If Joni would yield Joe Pavelski or Devin Setoguchi, I'd do the deal with SJ. THIS of course would mean Ek would have to be "right" and I'm betting against him. Although, the SJ defense needs all kinds of help. Dan Boyle can't do it alone. So there may actually be real interest in that regard. Joni could be a good addition somewhere- we might as well get something for him if our intent is not to re-sign him; or we don't think we can re-sign him.

we better be getting joe thornton or something like that.

Joni can go. Gleason has to stay.

Oh and Eklund is the laughingstock of the hockey media world. Just read the tweets.

That has GOT to be the funniest damn Eklund rumour i've heard to date. Not the SJ wants Joni part, but the 'Canes would like them to TAKE Gleason'

I personally would like to re-sign Joni, I know, I'm like the only one on here who does. But if we have no intentions to or can't afford him, then trade him before we lose him for nothing. I'm pretty sure we could get a decent prospect + high pick for him at the deadline.

But us wanting them to take Gleason, I'm sorry, but that right there just debunked this whole rumour.

I really wouldn't mind seeing Joni back, but not at the max level contract he will be able to get on the open UFA market. He is a minute eater and does a lot of things well. You just can't have too many of "him" on the roster, one is enough. If he likes it here and wants to take a lesser deal to stay, it may be doable. Is this is where the dreaded "no trade clause" comes into play? If a player is willing to take less to play where he likes it, it is acceptable to ask for the NTC and it is a bargaining chip.

I do think he has a comfort level here, especially with the other Finns, but another one of those will be looking for a deal this off season. With the progression the younger players are making, it will be interesting to see what they do with The Juice.

I digress, EK is smoking something if he thinks JR is trying to give away Gleason.

joni right now has the 35th highest cap number for defensemen. he's 6th in TOI/game and 40th in scoring. i dont see him commanding much more than 5m.

I would also like to keep Joni----if Jr can work his magic and get him to re-sign.
For all his strange ways-----we move the puck better when he is out there and he plays a lot of minutes. I see no way that JR is looking to send Gleason away, since he is our main stay at home guy. Harrison has also been a pleasant surprise.

And I don't see JR putting 5m into Joni (or any defenseman).

If we could get Pavelski, Setoguchi, or Ryann Clowe and Douglas Murray for Pitkanen and Gleason, I would do it.

I would not be shocked to see JR trade Gleason, but the idea of him pushing a Gleason trade is absurd.

(If Gleason did go to the West, he and Ott could play each other 6 times a year!)

this is the same eklund that was last year convinced that Staal was going to be dealt. Just sayin'

If you would have told me that he would fire Lavi and bring back Mo I would have thought he was smoking something too. But here we are. Trading those two would free up $7mil in cap space.

yep, but this is a business. I never thought we would trade Cole away and when we did I never thought we would trade to get him back and that the trade would include Williams. I figured Williams would be here a while.

C97 - you have to stop "figuring" and "thinking" becuase that's when the "get-ya". ;)

After Francis went to TO, I have never once "figured" or "thought" anything and I happily exist stress and surprise free!

The key to any trade is what you get back. These days you don't hear a lot about "salary dump" because the cap has pretty much eliminated the teams that can just absorb over-paid players. But until you know what's coming back, it's impossible to judge a trade.

Not saying you still won't end up going "wtf???" though.

When we got Gleason for JJ, JR said he likes slightly older defensemen because they come into their primes later. Now we're supposedly going to give him away in his prime? Not likely Eklund. Not likely.

One other thing....I think the last thing the Sharks need is another player like Joni. They are getting blasted, even internally by guys like Couture (a pseud-rookie) and Clowe for not having the heart to win dirty.

Joni would be another in that breed. I just can't see their GM doing that.

I'm a big Joni fan. I don't understand why he gets as much crap as he does. I would hate to see him go.

I'll just echo what everyone else said about the Gleason comment. Its laughable that we're trying to force Gleason on anyone. He is the type of defenseman that JR covets. I'm not saying he's untouchable, but we're certainly not shopping him.

I still say that everyone is available for the right deal, unless your name is Staal, Ward, or Skinner.

Of course anyone is available for the right deal. But I'm just not so sure JR is calling other GMs saying take Gleason off my hands. If a GM were to call JR and inquire about Gleason or anyone for that matter, I'm sure he would listen. But to say JR is asking SJ to TAKE Gleason is laughable.

I guess I didn't take the quoted tweet as literal. To me, take meant "include". And without knowing the players/dollars coming back, is impossible to judge.

But since it's just an Eklund rumor to bump his hits or his rumor chart or whatever, yes, it's all silly talk.

That. The Hurricanes are more-heavily loaded on offense than defense; i really can't see JR trading away 2 defensemen without some huge upgrade coming back. Mind you i could totally see him going after Wallin again, but not at the expense of Gleason.

Change 'Gleason' in the rumour to 'Samsonov', however, and i could see it.
