CAROLINA OVERPOWERS OTTAWA
Carolina beats Ottawa 4-1 in rookie tournament action
SUNDAY, September 7 - The Carolina Hurricanes proved to have too much firepower Sunday night as they handed Ottawa a 4-1 loss in rookie tournament play at the Corel Centre. The Sens saw their record drop to 0-2 and they will now face the loser of Monday night's game between Montreal and Carolina in the semi-final on Tuesday. Ottawa's lone marker came from Calgary native Scooter Smith.
Adam Munro took the loss in goal for Ottawa. He faced 45 shots on the night while the Sens squad fired 26 shots on Carolina. Both teams failed to convert on the powerplay as Ottawa went 0-for-5 and Carolina failed in their six attempts.
Tournament play continues Monday as Carolina and Montreal face off at the Corel Centre (7 p.m.). Tickets are just $5 and are available at CapitalTickets.ca.

45 shots to 26? Who's coaching these kids? (it sure ain't Mo). Sounds like these guys are trying to make an impression. I bet Cam Ward was in goal. That kid is good.
Great news!!

Looks like it was Ramsay, LaRose (and Staal?;)), Surma, Stephenson :D
In his first game in a Carolina uniform, Eric Staal picked up an assist as the Canes opened the Ottawa rookie tournament with a dominating 4-1 win over the host Senators on Sunday, outshooting Ottawa 44-26.
Both the uniform and the win met with Staal's approval.
"Red looks good out there, I'll tell you that much," Staal said. "It was a fun game."
Staal, the second overall pick in June's draft, set up a Chad LaRose goal late in the third period by feeding LaRose on an odd-man rush. LaRose's initial shot was blocked and he and Staal both swiped at the rebound. LaRose got credit for the goal.
"I'd say we both got it at the same time," Staal said. Staal finished plus-1 with three shots but won only 40 percent of his faceoffs.
Goalies Cam Ward and Daniel Manzato came within 5:42 of a shutout before the Senators beat Manzato on their 24th shot of the night.
Ryan Ramsay, a free-agent center who played junior hockey for the Hurricanes-owned Plymouth Whalers of the Ontario Hockey League, Damian Surma, Shay Stephenson and LaRose each had a goal and an assist.
NUMBER TO KNOW

The Canes double-shifted Staal, bumping his ice time into Rod Brind'Amour-type numbers. Brind'Amour played that much in 32 of 48 games last season.

Anyone know if there's anyplace I can go on the web to listen to these games?
If I didn't have to work, I'd be taking a vacation in Ottawa right now.

Are they suppose to do that? I mean - its okay to go after the rebounds? :eek2: Someone needs to tell Mo.

Somehow this post combined with your avatar gave me a fit of giggles. Good post!
I have to agree with Luke - who's coaching these guys? Might need to put him on the Canes bench before its over with.
Taking shots and going after rebounds. What'll they think of next?

I thought it ironic that one of the goals was scored by Surma who scored his NHL goal against the Senators. Good for him.

Well the canes most have done good again tonight!
This is from a guy who was apparently there from another website:
well first lets say its a good thing today meant nothing. the key ingredients to the habs are all ineligible. komi, hainsey, hossa, ward, balej are not playing. 2 guys looked really good tonight as carolina beat montreal 2-0 chris higgins and eric staal. bad news eric belongs to carolina.
Good to see the canes are winning and winning soundly! Even though they are only category 1 or at the most cat. 2 canes its still good to see them doing alot of damage!

Its a shame that we can't see these games, I'd love to watch them. It would be fun to see Staal and the others in a canes uniform playing official games!
We may not get to see any of them in that situation again for a year or 2....

It looks like Ramsey's a nice little prospect.
Perhaps even NEXT year, we could see him and Staal?

Well it's only two games, but moreover Ramsay doesn't even have a contract with the Canes at this point.

Wow:
Ottawa outshot Carolina 33-32 in a game that featured six fights, including five in a short span late in the first and early in the second.
Defenseman Danny Richmond, the Canes second-round pick in this year's draft (31st overall), fought twice, and was thrown out of the game late for his troubles.
And about the notables:
Center Eric Staal, the Hurricanes’ first-round pick in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft (second overall), was held scoreless for the second straight game. Staal finished the game with a minus-1 plus-minus rating and also picked up a high-sticking minor, while winning 13-of-30 faceoffs.
Ryan Ramsey, a 20-year-old free-agent tryout who played last season for the Plymouth Whalers of the Ontario Hockey League, scored an unassisted goal for his fourth tally of the tournament, while Chad LaRose added his second marker. Another free-agent tryout, Kris Koski of Michigan State also scored for Carolina.
And finally - who gets to come to camp:
Staal, defenseman Brad Fast (1999, 84th overall, third round), defenseman Matej Trojovsky (2003, 130th overall, fifth round), Richmond, forward Damian Surma (1999, 174th overall, sixth round), and Ward.

Sounds like a helluva hockey game! Staal was dissapointing but that doesn't mean he still doesn't deserve a chot at the big team. I'm sure the other teams were paying alot of attention to him.
I can't beleive we didn't invite Ramsey, Stephenson, or LaRose to training camp...

Then using hockey weight/height, LaRose must be 5'6" and a buck fifty. ;)

Well, every bio I checked (nhl.com, tsn.ca, ch.com, nhlpa.com) had him listed at 6 ft and 190 lbs....ch.com even listed him as 6'1....but I dunno, I mean Ive never pulled out the tape measure on him.....
but if you look at his pictures, he does look like a little kid, like imagine him in a boy scout uniform or somethin....
http://www.nhlpa.com/Player_Pics/7079.jpg
and now real quick imagine Jeff O'neil in a boy scout uniform.......(thats for you ladies ;) )
okay now imagine me in boy scout uniform.....
okay now real quick Jeff O'neil again.....

I'm 5'8", and while I won't mention my weight I can say it is below Vrbata's weight of 190. Radim was smaller and skinnier than me when I was standing next to him if I recall correctly? I am also more than disappointed that LaRose was not invited.. what a shame! Bummer Ottawa won.. I think it is a farce that they won one/lost one against us and win the tournament.. sounds like a tie to me! ;) All it proves is that the Habs have no hope :p
