I bet he took a nice pay cut!
Joe Nieuwendyk recorded his 500th goal and 1,000th point last season with New Jersey.
Sportsnet.ca - Veteran forward Joe Nieuwendyk will be back with the New Jersey Devils this season, Sportsnet has learned.
Terms of the deal are unknown as this point. Last season, he earned $5 million (US).
Nieuwendyk, who turns 37 Wednesday, is coming back from a torn oblique muscle in his lower side. The injury forced him to miss the Stanley Cup finals against Anaheim.

Nieuwendyk joins Leafs
TSN.ca Staff
9/9/2003
Joe Nieuwendyk is a Toronto Maple Leaf, TSN has learned. The unrestricted free agent centre agreed to terms today on a one-year deal with the Maple Leafs.
The New Jersey Devils and Nieuwendyk's agent had been talking recently, but were not able to get a deal done.
Nieuwendyk is expected to earn significantly less than the $5-million he made last season. It's believed he was looking for a one year deal worth $3.5-million.
Nieuwendyk scored 14 goals and dished out 28 assists in 80 games with the New Jersey Devils last year. In 1,113 career games with the Calgary Flames, Dallas Stars and New Jersey Devils, he has tallied 511 goals and 501 assists
Nieuwendyk has won Stanley Cups with all three teams he has played for (Calgary - 1989, Dallas - 1999, New Jersey - 2003). In 149 career playoff games he has scored 60 goals and assisted on 50 others.
Details to follow.

to get used to seeing Nieuwy in the blue and white, especially with Bryan Marchment as a teammate. Maybe he'll become comfortable right away since he has some former teammates in Toronto (Belfour, Gavey, R. Jackman).
I'm not sure whether or not I can make myself cheer for the Leafs, but I'm glad that Nieuwy found a home for the upcoming season. He has always been one of my favorites. :spin: (In fact, his Stars jersey was the first of any type of hockey paraphernilia that I ever bought).
I don't know what type of animal-welfare organizations are up there in Toronto, but they'd definitely make Nieuwy feel at home. :)
Rumors had been batted around somewhat that Nieuwy was wanting to return here to DFW, but our sports beat reporter seemed unconvinced that there was room for another center. Maybe it's for the best...

I'm glad Joe got signed, I do like him.. but why the Leafs are signing centers instead of defenseman is a mystery to me!

You and just about anyone who is covering the Leafs here in Ontario. One thing about Joe is that he has won at least one Cup with every team he has played with. Something to keep in mind.

Nieuwendyk and Bryan Marchment playing on the same team will definately be interesting, since scum bag Marchment took him out of the playoffs a few years ago. Hopefully, Joe can stay healthy the whole season.
