Oh yeah and congrats to the Sens. ;)

From tsn.ca:
Senators clinch Northeast Division title

Associated Press

3/22/2003

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) - It was only fitting that Marian Hossa scored the goal that gave the Ottawa Senators the Northeast Division title.

Hossa's 43rd goal of the year with 36.7 seconds left broke a 1-1 tie as the Senators beat Florida 3-1 on Saturday night.

"He's done it all year for us," goalie Patrick Lalime said. "He's a great player. He scores big goals at big times."

Prior to the game, the singing of the Canadian national anthem drew loud and steady booing. Fans in attendance greeted the start of The Star Spangled Banner with loud applause.

The Panthers issued an apology over the incident.

"The entire Florida Panthers organization regrets that a number of fans behaved disrespectfully during the playing of the Canadian anthem," the club said in a prepared statement.

Hossa tied Vancouver's Markus Naslund and Todd Bertuzzi for the NHL goal-scoring lead this season. After taking the puck in the corner, Hossa skated backward toward the side of the net and used Olli Jokinen as a screen, shooting the puck between the forward's legs and past goalie Roberto Luongo.

It was the second time this season that Hossa beat Florida with a late goal. He scored with 1:04 left in regulation in Ottawa's 2-1 victory at the Office Depot Center on Jan. 22.

Ottawa, which has an NHL-leading 104 points, has won the Northeast title three times in the last five seasons.

"It was one of our goals at the beginning of the season," Lalime said. "Now we want to finish first overall."

The Senators have a four-point lead over Detroit in the overall standings. The Red Wings have two games in hand.

The loss extended Florida's franchise-record home winless streak to 12 games at 0-9-2-1. The Panthers haven't won at home since beating Carolina in overtime Jan. 25.

"We felt like we put ourselves in a position to win the game but we weren't able to capitalize on all our chances," said centre Matt Cullen, who scored a short-handed goal for Florida late in the second.

"They made some big plays at the end when they needed them. Its a step that we were able to put ourselves in a position to win against one of the best teams in the league."

Bryan Smolinski tied it for Ottawa at 9:22 of the third. Magnus Arvedson scored into an empty net with 22 seconds left.

Florida came into the game with an 18-0-2-2 record when leading after two periods, while Ottawa was only 2-17-0 when trailing heading into the third.

"Its good to know (that we can come back)," said Lalime, who made 24 saves. "We didn't know the stat, but everybody was confident we could come back."

Ottawa tied it on a three-way passing play among Smolinski, Arvedson and Todd White. White carried the puck over the blue-line and passed to Arvedson, who fired a cross-ice pass to Smolinski. Smolinski then one-timed the puck between Luongo's legs.

"It was such a great play on the first one," Lalime said.

Cullen gave Florida the lead with his 13th goal of the season, his first in eight games. Kristian Huselius poked the puck away from Ottawa's Radek Bonk to create a 2-on-1 break. Huselius held the puck until defenceman Wade Redden went down and then slid a pass over to Cullen, who shot into the open net.

"We came into the dressing room after giving up the short-handed goal and had a few words," Hossa said. "We absolutely wanted to win.

"And we were able to find a way to win."

Florida missed a chance to pad its lead when Ivan Novoseltsev had a breakaway early in the third. But Lalime denied his attempt to put the puck between his legs on a deke.

"I thought we got a big save by Patrick in the third on the breakaway," Senators coach Jacques Martin said. "That changed the whole game when he made that save."

NOTES - Ottawa played without leading scorer Daniel Alfredsson (hip flexor) and forward Peter Schaefer (lower back) . . . Luongo set a Florida record for goalies by appearing in his 61st game this season.

OK, so I have been a member if this forum since it started back in July, and I have never felt the need to yell. However, DO NOT BOO THE CANADIAN ANTHEM TOMORROW!!!!! We have SO much more class than that. At the very least, remember that almost half our team was born in Canada, and if you boo the anthem you are booing them as well.

I doubt this needs to be said here, but it is something I feel very strongly about.

Kat.....you're not talking about Section 126's post are you? He's being sarcastic....I hope most people are reading the post and not just the title or they won't know.

I'll personally be cracking heads if I hear anyone booing. But then I'll be in 304...one of the better sections fan-wise I've ever sat in....so I don't expect to hear any.

Actually I don't think they are. Somone posted a subject line that was the begining of a sentence "Boo the Candadian Nat'l Anthem" and in the body of the message it said something to the effect ".... and we'd look horrible, etc". I misread it myself and replied to it in a pissed of nature until rcf corrected me.

Thankfully, I think we'll be fine tonight!

I'm, by no means, advocating the opinions of these writers. Its just if its going to become this big of an issue, then maybe there is reason to at least consider the value of an anthem(s) before a game.

The one thing that DOES bother me about the American anthem before games is that many people find reason to provide an over-stylized version. If its a song that deserves respect (and each country's does IMO), then the songs should be sung respectfully.

If it can't be sung respectfully, then I wouldn't be opposed to not hearing it.

Personally, I'll always remember the times like last spring during the Toronto-Carolina series and how passionate both anthems sounded.

I don't care what your take is on the war, the fact is we are there and there's nothing we can do about it. Show your support for America and all the men and women over there protecting our freedom. BOO THE CANADIEN NATIONAL ANTHEM AT THE TORONTO GAME on Tuesday.

I don't think that I misunderstood the message there...

Oh, yeah. Saw that one, but I was thinking that since it was before the Montreal game that everyone had probably calmed down since then. I think it was a kid, probably thinking he was going to be brilliant with the suggestion. He later said:

People- I know you are all old and really crabby... take a chill pill or a nap. I am just having fun and if you don't want to play, then don't!

Which made me laugh (at the "old and crabby comment" ) and then forget all about him.

There's another poster that says stupid crap, but I never read them anymore. ;)

I don't think that I misunderstood the message there...

And btw, my response to it feels something like this:

Oh, yeah. Saw that one, but I was thinking that since it was before the Montreal game that everyone had probably calmed down since then. I think it was a kid, probably thinking he was going to be brilliant with the suggestion. He later said:

Apparently this is still an issue - at least with the Lightning (I realize this thread was about the Panthers initially), . At last night's game vs. Montreal, they played a prerecorded message from Captain Dave Andreychuk before the anthems. A few still boo'd, but were quickly drowned out by cheers apparently. How strange.

I have yet to hear one boo at the RBC Center while singing of the Canadian national anthem..I have been proud of our fellow Caniacs...I have respect for our Canadian players...and that in itself would keep me from booing if I wanted to..which I don't....

You would think this same factor would keep fans of other teams from booing other countries' anthems. But then, i suppose it takes all kinds.

Anyone who would boo another country's anthem at a sporting event - whether it's a Canadian booing the US anthem, an American booing the Canadian anthem, whatever - is, IMO, a classless slug. Not even worthy of my spit.

I'll add that to my list of reasons to dislike Tampa Bay. I can not pull for them in the playoffs. If I feel compelled to cheer for a division rival, then the Caps will have to be the one.

Booing a national anthem is low class and inexcusable.

Canes fans have behaved well in this regard both this year and last. Well done all :spin:

I agree about boo birds being classless... I have respect for folks regardless of race, nationality or religion and I expect the same treatment in return...this has gotten out of hand..

The National Anthem to me is sacred!!
