I like this whole video presentation thing he's doing (HERE (http://video.nhl.com/videocenter/console?catid=35&id=124228), with Letourneau-Leblond). I wonder if he plans to do these things all year.

And I'll continue to rub the head of my friend, Genie, hoping they start doing this sort of thing for rogue officials.

It's caused quite the buzz on Twitter- and apparently this is how it's gonna be going forward.

I like his explaining things out and that he used Social Media.

Creative thinking- what a concept!

I know there's some shanny hate from whalers fans in the past... but I think theyd be hard pressed to disagree he's nailing his new role. Consistency over the season will be important though

Pierre and Jones made a great point. Its journeymen doing this, for the most part. They'll work their ways out of a job. Nobody wants to take on a heavy suspension liability... unless your name is pronger.

Pronger will be the biggest test when he does something dumb this season. Especially since priors are heavy factors.

Also, matt Cooke better be serious about his transformation of his game he claims he underwent.

I'll be interested to see what happens when Ovechkin does something stupid as well. Repeat offender, superstar. Will the book be thrown at him as well? That will be a huge test to me.

So far I like what he is doing. He's getting his point across early that he won't be taking any sh!t. Now let's see if it holds up during the regular season and playoffs.

What surprises me is that apparently these guys were all shown a video on what would constitute a suspension prior to training camp and yet it seems every night these hits to the head and hits from behind are happening. You'd think this guys would get a clue.

SoCalcaniac
09-27-2011, 12:16 PM
Yep, one would think if they don't "get a clue" they'd at least get some cash out and buy a clue. They do that big "this is what won't be tolerated" meeting with each team, every year, and still..... the dumb hat gets worn every time. Hilarious.

Sheriff Shanahan may not have many fans from the whole Whalers thing, I'll just say, I'm over that bit of history, because I've been over it, but want to say, HOOORAH for the League going for broke & going w/Brendan to do this job.

Scene setter: Could y'all even imagine the monotone, and circle talkin' Colie Campbell doing one of these videos? GOOD LORD. I think I'd rather jump off a bridge. He'd go on XM and "explain" what happened and why he decided something, and I'd go into a coma. BRUTAL.

Shanahan is concise, he points out the specifics of the infraction, and then lays down the hammer. I'm perfectly fine with it.

There are more dudes going to meet with Sheriff S. The stuff from last night (Tom Sesito of the Flyers, DUDE. His back was turned. NUMBERS) and the issue with Simmonds hurling a homophobic slur at Sean Avery, right after some idiot threw a banana at him last week in a racial insult to him.

...... Brendan is gonna be busy.

Ovechkin will not be a repeat offender. yes, it will be his third suspension, but his last was in march of 2010. after 18 months of no suspensions, offender status is reset.

Whether all priors are considered or whether the tag "repeat offender" carries more weight, i'm not sure. (other than in regard to the salary forfeiture)

(maybe i'm forgetting an offense from last season. i dont remember)

well some of these guys are considered repeat offenders because of what they did in '09 so I would think OvenChicken would fall into that category.

I would think so, doesn't seem like Shanny care about "star" status. If you do the crime you gotta do the time.

It seems like I've been complaining about head shots and defenseless players forever and saying that it would take a superstar getting hurt severely to make the league do something different. Crosby gets seriously hurt and the league starts to take things seriously.

NASCAR didn't get serious about it's safety issues until Dale Earnhardt was killed in a wreck. Several others were killed during the preceding couple of years, but it didn't cause a shift in the mindset like it did when "the" superstar was killed. At least Crosby didn't have to die to have something change.

I hate being right sometimes, but I'm glad to see it.

18 months of no suspensions removes the repeat offender tag. Taken straight from the CBA. Page 95 and 96.

I could have been suspended ten times in 05-06, but nine since, and not be a repeat offender... whether all historical discipline is taken into account or if only repeat offender status is taken into accountis the question...

If someone was suspended anytime between march 2010 and now, and they never shed the tag based on prior incidents... that's different than ovechkins situation.

For example... suspended in October 2009 and april 2010 means I am a repeat offender. Suspended five times in 08-09, and in October 2009, November 2009, January 2010, Feb 2010 means I am not. However one scenario clearly shows a player who has a history...but for the repeat offender the 09 discipline is still relevent.

This one seems a little harsh. He came on the ice via a legal change. The rest of preseason and 5 regular season games for violating the instigator in the final five minute rule?

Just out of curiosity, how many games was Shanhan been suspended for throughout his career? He's done some pretty dastardly things.

puck_it
09-27-2011, 10:34 PM
No, one game was for the final five minute instigator rule...

the supplementary discipline was for leaving the bench for the purpose of starting an altercation... while he left the bench legally his intent was solely to start an altercation. Rules 70.2, and 70.3 subject the player to supplemental discipline for this type of infraction... It's pretty clear that was the determining factor if you watch the video.

It might be harsh, but honestly ive never seen this rule called.. so i dont think theres much of a baseline for it.

in the "things shanahan has done" department, how about this? Been a catalyst for an almost-fight between the coaching staff (as well as a guest appearance by Stephan Yelle and our current Asst. Coach Dave Lewis!)

1, if any. he was committed to that skating lane. the habs player leaned forward and put his head in a vulnerable position, as malone was already committed to that space. in real time it looked like he just just a blow by to rip a guys head off, but slow motion i think it looks like the habs player leaned into a position last second... and i didnt see malone get any extention of his body in order to deliver the hit. it was body contact more than a check. if his arm raised during the hit, you could argue he didnt make an effort to diminish.

this is the type of thing i think the league will let slide, as it is going to happen. unless guys find a way to make it common place.
