Giguere, Ducks far apart in talks
TSN.ca Staff

Anaheim general manager Bryan Murray says they have reached an impasse in contract talks with goalteder Jean-Sebastien Giguere, meaning last spring's playoff hero likely won't be in camp when it opens later this week.

Giguere, the Conn Smythe Trophy winner as playoff MVP, is reportedly seeking a significant increase from the $900,000 he made last season. The Ducks are believed to have offered a deal worth $4-million a season while Giguere is said to be seeking $7-million, which would make him one of the highest paid netminders in the NHL.

"The way the numbers are now, I'm not optimistic," Murray tells the Orange County Register. "We all have great respect for Jiggy, but you have to do what's right for the organization and what's right for the player."

Complicating matters is the fact goaltender Marty Turco has yet to sign a new deal with the Dallas Stars. Turco is said to be asking for $4.5-million a season while the Stars have countered with an offer worth just over $3-million.

Last year, league MVP Jose Theodore signed a five year, $26.5-million deal with the Montreal Canadiens while San Jose netminder Evgeni Nabokov agreed to a two-year deal worth $7.15-million following a one month holdout.

If Giguere elects to holdout, the Ducks say they are prepared to go with last year's backup Martin Gerber and highly regarded prospect Ilja Bryzgalov.

Murray says talks with forward Petr Sykora are progressing and the two sides are close to a deal. He made $3.535-million last season after leading the team in scoring with 34 goals.

Shoot, Turco is asking way less.. I'd rather him... Last season he had the best statistical season by a goalie since World War II.. not bad for his first time starting the season as a #1!

$7 MILLION!!! Dude.....I don't know about that! Now, just where was it I was telling someone the other day that netminders would be getting thier money soon enough?

Wish we could get Sykora!!

I realize I have no real understanding of what it must be like to make that kind of money or moreover decide that I'm "worth" it, but this does some insane. Maybe it's a bunch of hooey they are throwing out there, but can't Jiggy take the 4 mil and prove he can sustain it over a few seasons and then ask for more money?

And maybe I don't have the drive/confidence thing (well I know I don't), but why put so much pressure on yourself and on top of that worry about teammates, fans, management if the season doesn't play out like last year.

I agree Eileen. One great year does not a $7 million dollar man make. Although, it's not about your "worth". It's about what someone will pay you to do the job they need you to do. Sounds like $4 million is the paltry sum the Ducks think he's worth

Any doubt salaries are getting out of hand? Doesn't bode well for the CBA

And all of this mess going on when public school teachers, EMT's and police officers are so grossly underpaid. I'll say no more.

I'll say no more as well. I'll just agree with what you already said.

This amazes me and sounds somewhat familiar. Giguere started last season with a save percentage running below .9 for the whole month of October and didn't break to .92 until March. The only thing he's got to really justify big money is the amazing numbers he pulled during the playoffs and I can think of another goaltender who did the same thing a couple of seasons ago. Was this a burst of brilliance or something that can be sustained? I don't think his record warrants this kind of money at this point...

And right on Lady J about the police, teachers etc. When you put it in that perspective the whole thing become ludicrous.

Brodeur made 9 million last year and one of the best goalies ever, Roy made 8 million. After one good year Giggy puts himself in this class? Get your name on the Cup first kid, then maybe you're in their league.

Not to get off topic to much :D , but here you go in condensed form.

I had been working at the YMCA for a long time, mainly with the year round school kids, but I did a preschool camp every summer. I had a friend who was working at the school, and "recruited me". I have been working there for 3 years now, and I really enjoy it.

This past summer, I taught a sports camp for preschoolers. Everyone thought I was crazy, but one of my sports I taught was street hockey. I went to Play it again sports, got some sticks and got them sawed down to a little size, got some goals, and it was sweet! I will post some photos later, but I may have to blur the faces out first! ;) We did eventually did get safety sticks, but I had no injuries with the reals ones that we used most of the sports camp! Anyway, that is my story, and we are back on topic! :D

Watching preschoolers play street hockey must've been hilarious! I'll bet they had a great time.

Sykora agrees to terms with Ducks
Canadian Press

ANAHEIM, Calif. (CP) - The Anaheim Mighty Ducks re-signed restricted free-agent winger Petr Sykora to a three-year deal Sunday.

``I think we have a chance to do some really memorable things this season and I'm happy to get going,'' said Sykora. ``I'm just glad it only took three days to get done.''

Financial terms were not released but the 26-year-old earned $3.53 million US last season when had 59 points including 34 goals. He also added four goals and nine assists in 21 post-season games.

``It's a solid three-year contract,'' said Ducks general manager Bryan Murray. ``At the end of three years, if he has some very solid seasons I think he might end up happy that it's a three-year and not a four-year deal.''

The Czech forward has scored at least 20 goals in each of his five full NHL campaigns. He was acquired from New Jersey with Mike Commodore, J.F. Damphousse and Igor Pohanka in exchange for Oleg Tverdovsky, Jeff Friesen and Maxim Balmochnykh on July 6, 2002.
