I heard this morning on Mike and Mike that Sid the Kid had a recurrence of concussion symptoms and is out indefinitely......did anyone else hear or read this?

True. "Sidney Crosby, the N.H.L.’s biggest star, said Monday that he was experiencing concussion symptoms again and that he would sit out indefinitely."

This is a very sad story. :(
Sounds like Marc Savard. :(

I am very glad that he is listening to his body instead of just relying on the Impact testing results. He has the rest of his life to think about, not just hockey. :( You can now understand the pressure that other players with concussions must feel though. Everyone tells them that they passed the test therefore they should be out there.

Man, this is just bad for the league overall.
Hope he gets better soon.

Off topic, but...
has anybody heard any news or information on David Tanabe?

^ Y'know, the same person came to mind this morning as I listened to Mike & Mike talk about James Harrison's suspension.
I just did some Googling and I'm not coming up with any new information.

That's a great question.
Obviously Tanabe is not Crosby (or Savard or others) but it would be interesting to get the perspective of a player that walked away, in what appeared to be, a somewhat short time from that concussion (have no idea about Tanabe's concussion history) as opposed to waiting it out for a year and then trying again. I wonder if the presumption is that Tanabe was just 'ready' to walk away and the concussion advice made that easier. We have no idea because he just kind of vanished.

In my Googling, I did find something from an old article that said Tanabe's doctor advised him to never play hockey again.
Ah, here we go, from the N&O (via Wikipedia):
Neil Sheehy, Tanabe's agent, said the player had been advised by doctors that it would be dangerous to continue playing hockey.
"His career is over," Sheehy said. "The reality of it is the doctors told him not to play and he will not play. He will not be signing with a European team or any other team. His career has ended."

I don't know if there's a difference between 2008 (when Tanabe retired) and January 2010 -- was there research that indicated X amount of rest would be an option instead of walking away from the game? Or was research the same and Tanabe was that bad off?
Btw, the stretch on Tanabe was a December 18, 2007, concussion and October 17, 2008, report of the team reaching a settlement with the Canes. So pretty much the same stretch that Crosby was out.

Which does beg the question about what Doctors say and if that's changed at all (can't imagine it has in that short of time), because the big article about Crosby's Dr talks in very positive terms about his ability to return to the game (in time).
At the same time, I've known HS athletes that get concussions and had a long recovery (HS soccer goalie, kneed by a teammate accidentally during warmups - took an entire year to be able to return to a full academic schedule) and their Drs said to hang up soccer but that he could play tennis (he was good at both) which is what he did. I get that when you are the greatest player in the world (or a pro athlete of any kind) there's a different kind of pressure, but a brain is a brain.
Would be interesting to get a Tanabe update. Though there were other "oddities" about his ending his career - he didn't return to camp (while still under contract) and allow the Canes medical staff to evaluate/treat him (which is standard process apparently).

I remember hearing stories about Tanabe having great difficulty just going through daily activities when he retired. That has been a while ago and I have Googled him several times over the last couple of years and haven't been able to find out anything.

There's a thread...over there...about Crosby. Tanabe came up in that and I posted something asking if anybody knew anything. I would assume that somebody in the organization knows something and maybe they will get wind of the question.

I don't think anyone around here is a big fan, but rough prognosis for Pronger:
Pronger to Miss Season With Concussion Symptoms (http://www.nytimes.com/2011/12/16/sports/hockey/nhl-hockey-roundup.html)
“After consultation with respected concussion specialists Dr. Joseph Maroon and Dr. Micky Collins, it is the opinion of both doctors that Chris is suffering from severe post-concussion syndrome,” Holmgren said. “It is the recommendation of Drs. Maroon and Collins that Chris not return for the remainder of the 2011-12 season or playoffs. Chris will continue to receive treatment and therapy with the hope that he can get better.”
