A day after losing out in the Joe Nieuwendyk sweepstakes, TSN has learned the New Jersey Devils have signed unrestricted free agent centre Igor Larionov to a 1-year deal.

"Since joining the NHL over a decade ago, Igor Larionov has established himself as one of the league's best two-way players," said Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello.

Last season, Larionov scored 10 goals and added 33 assists for 43 points in 74 games.

He joined the Vancouver Canucks in 1989 for thee seasons before moving on to the San Jose Sharks for three campaigns and ultimately the Red Wings, where he toiled for eight seasons.

Too bad he went to the Devils...The Professor is (was? :p) a good guy.
Like Shell said...good for him. One more year in the league.

The feeling my brother and I had when Larionov got "the goal" is one we'll never forget...it was a combination of heartbreak, shock, and the downright saddening feeling that it was the beginning of the end for the Canes. I still had hope that the Canes could win the Cup, but deep down knew it would be hard because of the triple OT practically draining the Canes' energy.

I'm also still convinced that my VCR cursed the series...if only I had turned it off. I'll never forget the pit that formed in my stomach when I wanted to see Ronnie's GWG again the next morning, and realized what happened. Everything seemed to go wrong after that...not to mention how I think I'll never be able to get that particular game recorded. All ESPN Classic ever shows from that series is Game Five, dagnabit...

Anyway, despite how much his infamous goal (does her best John Cleese) makes me MAD, mad, mad...I can't help but be proud of Larionov for how he keeps trucking in the NHL. Now there's a dude with a heart for the game.
