The Hurricanes are home tonight hosting the Toronto Maple Leafs for the final matchup of the season between them. The Canes have yet to defeat the Leafs so far this season. This will be the first game of the Canes final back-to-back set. Amen.
There's really not much left for the Canes to play for other than pride, experience for the pups, and spoiling the fun for the opposition. There's nobody I'd rather see them frustrate than the Maple Leafs. Even with Glen Wesley added to the lineup, the attitude of the team as a whole is one of the spoiled child. So expect a lot of whining to the refs, probably a fight or two and more clutching and grabbing than you'll see at a bayou brothel.
Toronto currently sits in 5th spot in the East with 89 pts, trailing 4th place Philadelphia by 6pts. So they will be trying to gain some ground tonight with the regular season soon coming to a close.
Just for some comic relief, I'll post the injuries for Carolina:
Goaltender Patrick DesRochers, broken elbow, day-to-day, missed one game (March 22)
Forward Brad DeFauw, lacerated elbow, day-to-day, missed two games (March 18-22)
Defenseman Aaron Ward, bruised hip, day-to-day, missed three games (March 15-22)
Left wing Jan Hlavac, broken finger, day-to-day, missed 10 games (March 2-22)
Right wing Pavel Brendl, arthroscopic knee surgery, injured reserve, missed 12 games (Feb. 26-March 22)
Left wing Jaroslav Svoboda, dislocated shoulder, injured reserve, missed 18 games (Feb. 14-March 22)
Right wing Jesse Boulerice, concussion, injured reserve, missed 18 games (Feb. 14-March 22)
Right wing Jeff Heerema, broken wrist, injured reserve, missed 20 games (Feb. 9-March 22)
Left wing Erik Cole, broken leg, injured reserve, missed 22 games (Feb. 5-March 22)
Center Rod Brind’Amour, hand surgery, injured reserve, missed 26 games (Jan. 22-March 22)
...and for Toronto:
Nikolai Antropov (groin), Doug Gilmour (knee), Gary Roberts [possibly out](back)
Oops, forgot the goalies: Weekes/Belfour
Tidbits:
Radim Vrbata has 5 goals in his first 5 games in Carolina. His only scoreless game was a 0-0 draw with the LA Kings.
Tonight's officials:
Referees: Mark Faucette - 11; Dean Warren - 35
Linesmen: Derek Nansen - 70; Tim Nowak - 77
Here's the [url=http://www.carolinahurricanes.com/news/news.asp?articleid=1046]pre-game skate from ch.com. Enjoy the game and, if you're there, DO NOT BOO THE CANADIAN ANTHEM!!! (not that I think you would ;) ) Discuss. :D

If you promise them that you'll let them ride the train at Pullen Park I think they'll try EXTRA hard Jeff O!
I really hope we are able to just flat out beat the Leafs tonight. It'll be very disappointing to be told by Leafs fans online on NHL 2K3 for XBox that the Canes were swept in the season series....

If we lose this game, it will be the fifth team this year that we will not get a single point from in the season series.
If only we could create an O'neill-Vrbata-Hedican clone... offensive and defensive prowess, all rolled into one!
Here's to a fun game.

PAINFUL TO WATCH
Green and Wesley end up hurt as Leafs' sloppy effort is costly
By MIKE ZEISBERGER, TORONTO SUN
BOSTON -- Wincing in pain, Travis Green leaned on the shoulder of trainer Brent Smith, who helped the Maple Leafs forward to the FleetCenter medical room for x-rays.
Moments later, Glen Wesley hobbled through the same door, his left ankle heavily wrapped.
At least these two limping Leafs had a legitimate excuse for their team's 3-2 loss to the Boston Bruins last night in front of a disappointing crowd of 14,055 at the FleetCenter.
They were, after all, hurt.
The same couldn't be said for the rest of the team, which continues to play sloppy hockey, an alarming trend with the playoffs less than three weeks away.
Perhaps the only Leafs who were not ripped for their lack of work effort by general manager/coach Pat Quinn were the members of the team's training staff, who continue to turn in long hours.
With Gary Roberts and Nik Antropov fighting groin injuries, Phil Housley rehabbing from a fractured ankle and Doug Gilmour aiming for a post-season return from a knee injury, the Leafs cannot afford to lose anyone else.
While results of the examinations won't be known until today, the agony etched on Green's face suggested his ailment might be worse than Wesley's. Green may have suffered a possible fractured rib while absorbing a hit from former Leaf Bryan Berard midway through the third period.
"We'll have to wait and see," Green said. "We have a few injuries right now but we have a lot of depth. We just have to play better hockey.
"I just dumped the puck in and Berard drove into me. It was clean. I went in awkwardly and my ribs caught the boards."
How the Leafs plan on getting out of the first round when they can't even get out of their own end is a perplexing dilemma in Quinn's mind.
All three Boston goals came on Leafs giveaways in the defensive zone. An errant Bryan McCabe pass led to a first period score by Rob Zamuner, while Mike Knuble's game-winner just 15 seconds into the third came after he stripped the puck from Robert Svehla.
"There were some real bad plays," Quinn said. "Our forwards aren't checking anyone. They just want the puck but we're not getting any offence.
"We better get out of this. I don't want to think of the consequences. We can't win this way."
Discipline, or a lack thereof, continues to be an issue as both Owen Nolan and Mats Sundin took costly minors in the third, Sundin's for punching Dan McGillis in the head.
The frustrated Leafs captain, who played his 1,000th NHL game, already had bolted the dressing room by the time the media were allowed in.
"We came in to this arena trying to win on talent alone and we got outplayed by hard work," Nolan said. "We have a lot of talent in here and have a few games to get our act together, but we need hard work."
Martin Lapointe also scored for Boston.
Tomas Kaberle and Darcy Tucker had the Leafs goals.

I happened to see the play where Glen was hit with the puck. Typical Wesley block , but he took the shot in the foot/ankle. Looked like he was in great pain as he left the ice.
I only saw part of the game, the part where Boston came back and scored 2 goals to win 3-2 :) . Even Sundin got a stupid penalty, so I guess he's become rather frustrated too.

I was disappointed in the Leafs last night.
The Bruins had Toronto on their heels nearly the entire 3rd. It'll be interesting tonight to see the Leafs level of play. They couldn't do much over the last half of the game. Was Boston simply THAT good last night ?? Guess we'll see....soon.
Maybe its just the new coach syndrome but Boston was clearly the agrressor last night.

It makes me start to doubt the existence of karma.

I'd love to see us come out and dominate tonight....although that might mean the Leafs would then implode again and turn the game into a boxing match which would put our already injury ravaged team into even more jeopardy. Ah....it's worth it!

Guess just playing for the Canes was enough for poor Glen to be caught in the injury wheel of fortune!
The Leafs are spending a couple of extra days in town to golf before heading to NY to play the Isles on Friday, so says the N&O. At least Glen can be at home with his family if he made the trip.

It could indeed have been a lot worst 1Irbegirl...
So the whole Toronto series ends with a red tie party...I'll take it! As I've said quite a few times before, I will definitely take a tie over a loss. And this tie was a good, bad, and ugly one...
The Good:
Mas Tomas! - Just like Vrbata, I like what I'm seeing out of this Kurka kid. And I especially liked what I saw tonight...beautiful goal to get the Canes on the board, with Big Joe and Craig Adams getting a helping of the action.
Where's Wardo? - Why, he was out there on the ice tonight! Glad you joined in Aaron...just think, without you and that awe-inspiring fifteen-twenty foot goal, the tie would not have been possible.
Go O Go! - And who better to get the game tying goal than Jeff O? Thanks to that goal, he now has three consistent thirty goal seasons. Speaking of thanks, kudos to Ronnie the Captain for making that goal happen. :spin:
The Bad:
The Tripp Tracy Show - Tripp...I have to admit that it hurts to put you here because you have been doing so well in your past couple of games, including Sunday's Blueliners charity game. In all honesty, you did not do bad tonight, but you did not do great either. I have to say the big turnoff was the smattering of food talk here and there. If you can just cut that out...
The Ugly:
In the Beginning - I sincerely believe that if it hadn't been for the weak first period the Canes experienced, they could have won this puppy tonight. (sighs) Perhaps that darned 60 Minutes clock should have been playing inside the RBC...
Pretty impressive showing Canes, considering how Heddy was almost out but thankfully came back in, Ward played when he was going to be out, and K. Adams and Vrbata were out. Now, it's time to kick some little brown birdie butt...

Wow... what a game. I just got home, and that tying goal was AWESOME. It was really nice to say "so there" to the hordes of Leafs fan that were there.
Kurka had a really pretty goal. Forehand to backhand and flip, right over Kidd. Great play. And of course, the tying goal.
The rookies looked more like they were making rookie mistakes in this game than I have seen from them previously... but I will forgive them.
Lots of no calls. The girl behind me (Canes fan) yelled to boo the Canadian national anthem, and I had to smack her down... turned around and said "you'd better not", she responded, "well, they booed ours" and I said that was no reason to boo theirs. She did not boo. Wesley's foot is broken and he will be out the rest of the season. Kevyn Adams will also be out the rest of the season with an abdominal muscle tear.
Edited because I was too late.

For all those wondering about Glen Wesley, it looks like he's broken his ankle. Poor Glen!
From CBC:
Leafs' Wesley breaks left ankle
WebPosted Tue Mar 25 19:52:26 2003
CBC SPORTS ONLINE - The Toronto Maple Leafs acquired Doug Gilmour, Phil Housley and Glen Wesley for the playoffs. Instead, the aging trio is injured.
Glen Wesley broke his left ankle in Monday's 3-2 loss at Boston.
(CP Photo)
Wesley, 34, became the latest Maple Leaf to join the ranks of the walking wounded after fracturing his left ankle blocking a shot in Monday's 3-2 loss at Boston.
Just how long the veteran defenceman will be sidelined has yet to be determined.
"The only thing I know right now is that it's broken," Wesley said, hinting he might have to wear a cast.
Toronto traded a fourth-round draft pick to Carolina for Wesley on March 10.
He has three assists and a plus-3 rating in seven appearances with Toronto.
Wesley was a minus-5 with one goal and eight points in 63 games for the Hurricanes.
Gilmour, the onetime Leafs captain re-acquired from Montreal for a sixth-round pick, played precisely eight shifts totalling 4:51 before suffering a knee injury in a 4-3 overtime loss at Calgary on March 13.
The feisty 39-year-old is likely lost to the Leafs until Round 2 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Housley, also 39, is still recovering from a broken foot so has yet to suit up for the Leafs.
The former Chicago rearguard cost Toronto two picks, a fourth and ninth-rounder, in the 2003 NHL Draft.

The only sign I saw was up in the 300s level, a nice Welcome Back Glen in red and black.
My hecklers from 338 weren't there! What a quiet and boring game without them!
I was stood up by the LGC Storm Squad )-:

We left at the end of the 2nd (had grad school work to do) and the Express Lane to Wade Ave wasn't open yet!!

The 2 things I saw that got the biggest rise out of the crowd:
1. At the beginning when two of the leafs ran into each other.
2. Hit of the game: McCabe on McCabe. When he almost flipped over the 'Canes bench. It was interesting to watch but it sure look like it hurt.
I didn't like the call of goalie interference, I think they were just trying to come up with somethign to call on the 'Canes..you know refs don't like uneven calls.
Not a bad game I had lots of fun.

Wesley's foot is broken and he will be out the rest of the season. Kevyn Adams will also be out the rest of the season with an abdominal muscle tear.
(sighs) And the hits just keep on coming...Wesley may now be a Leaf, but I still feel sorry for him. And Kevyn, poor Kevyn...
All I can say is at least there's only five games left this season...

Kat--where were you guys???
We were there, right in front of the Goodberry's outside of 304, as usual, after the 1st period. I met talkingcanes for the first time (nice to meet you!), and she and SHC and Canesluver and Guinevere and caniac369 and I were all in a little group talking, and SHC's hubby was wandering about. My sweetie and some of his friends were right next to us. We are most probably going to tailgate before the April 6th game, so maybe we can meet up then. I am starting to think that you are a phantom... :)

Do you mean when he did "da butt" in front of our bench? That was pretty sweet that they put it on the Jumbo afterward...
Was this Congratulate Everyone night?
What was with the survey people? Did any of you get surveyed? For the rest of you--"so called marketing students" were doing research primarily to see if people would pay to go to the NHL Draft and if so, how much.
Mine asked what this year's logo was, so I said "Is THIS Hockey?"

Ohhh...I like that! An old screen name I used to have was SPSteelphantom for smashing pumpkins (fav band) and Steel Phantom (fav roller coaster at Kennywood in Pgh, PA
I pm'ed SHC...I was outside of GBs right after the 1st with my wife...Looking around, then went to the restroom...Came back alone, went up to a couple groups, but to no avail. I did see one group of about 8-10 girls, but SHC said men would be present as well. I wasn't having anything to do with going up to a group of girls...Hahaha!
In that group, one girl had a white Irbe jersey...was that anyone? SHC gave me the clothing rundown, but I didn't see any of the articles...

I have been to Kennywood, many many times... every year K-12 for a school picnic, for starters...
I was wearing a white jersey with no number, Canesluver has Francis, Guin has Irbe (probably who you saw), caniac369 and SHC usually don't wear jerseys, and talkingcanes wasn't either. We were probably that group of girls. I think that I saw you, actually... saw a man and woman looking at us sort of strangely, but I thought it was just because of well, us.

Oh yah I was also surprised that they ran the metal detector over everyone going into the RBC Center. And they also came on with this speech about how everyone should sing to both anthems and how this is NHL custom and stuff implying previous events of discourtesy.

That was right when that girl yelled to Boo Canada... right during that message.
Yeah, they waved the metal detector over you, but had you put your metal objects in each hand and didn't even check to see what you had in your hands. Security.

Kat--sorry, forgot you were a 'burgher too! Hehe!
My wife had on a red Canes sweatshirt, I had on a red jersey, no name, and a black hat. I guess we were kinda looking around funny at everyone. There were a lot of groups out there!
Jedi...I had heard of the detectors, but I wasn't prepared for the hand wands. I emptied out my pockets, but the thing still went off...for the metal clip on my hat! I was half expecting Ric Flair to be on the Jumbo asking us to respect the anthem. That would be the equivalent, right?

The only sign I saw was up in the 300s level, a nice Welcome Back Glen in red and black.
On the Leaf feed of the game, they showed several signs. The one that stood out in my mind read "Welcome Back - Red Thunder #2 -> #22". Nice touch.
I must say, the way the boys came out in the second, Mo must have had one heck of a pep talk with them during the first intermission. Wow, what a performance turnaround. the first period was WEAK and showed why we aren't in the playoffs, but the last 2 periods showed that we have a reat future to look forward to. Joe Bowen and Harry Neale both comment that this franchise is going to be VERY good in very not too distant future. I nearly jumped out of my skin when O potted the GTG.

this was an exciting one. gotta love those game-tying goals with 33 seconds left. :D actually, it sounded like a game-winning goal listening to the crowd. the fans were great tonight, and i was relieved when the canadian anthem was not booed, and even applauded at its end.
was mystified not seeing vrbata out there, and then find out on the way home it was the flu. chuck said aaron could have stayed out this game but played, and AREN'T WE GLAD HE DID? :D :smoke:
i did my part today coming home from work on I-40. saw a white car with some leafs flags flying. i managed to pull up next to it, get their attention and wave a Canes jersey at them while informing them we were going to win. the girl in the passenger seat with the laffs jersey on gave me the thumbs down, haha. too bad the canes couldn't prove me right. :p

Lots of no calls. The girl behind me (Canes fan) yelled to boo the Canadian national anthem, and I had to smack her down... turned around and said "you'd better not", she responded, "well, they booed ours" and I said that was no reason to boo theirs. She did not boo.

Awww.. thanks <blush>.
Really, she just made me so mad I couldn't help but say something. Just because some classless people booed our national anthem should never prompt us to stoop to their level. So I then proceeded to sing both anthems really loud. :)
And I was really glad that noone in the stadium booed either anthem, and everyone cheered really loudly when she was done singing. I didn't want us to make the news and know that I was there and part of something like what happened in FL and Montreal, even if I didn't have anything to do with it.

I was relieved that both anthems went off without a hitch. I sang along to both. Thought the announcement before Karen started was moving and helped set the tone. I hope they do it again next Monday for the Montreal game.
I have to say 3 things:
*Kurka-- what a great kid to essentially be playing for 2 teams at the same time, and scoring for both teams!
*St. Jacques -- he continues to impress me, and surely has a great future. I still marvel at this trade-- he's the real wild card of that deal! and that's why we don't need:
*Tanabe -- "Turnover" Tanabe continues to live up to his name. I'm tired of waiting for his so-called "potential" to start kicking in. Would not shed a tear if he went bye-bye during the off-season.
Okay -- except for a crappy 1st period, that was a fun one. . . . hope they have some steam left for tomorrow night!

Except for the first 10 minutes which were incredibly bad, it was a great game and a fun game.
McCabe nearly broke his own back and Domi couldn't whine more if he were in nursery school.
The baby Canes are making their case for staying up next year. It'll be an interesting camp when the big boys are healthy.
With all the games Kurka has played in the last 2 weeks, I can't believe he can even stay awake, much less score a great goal.
Got nervous seeing Vrbata as a scratch. Sorry he has the flu, glad it's not anything else.
Good job Kat keeping the crowd in check during the anthems :spin:
Nice to meet everyone and put faces to names. We'll have to do it again. Tailgating on 4/6 sounds fun. Can't believe the season is this close to over, but the boys need time to rest and heal and be able to start the new season on track.

Great to meet talkingcanes and see everyone else again! And raleighcanesfan is a total chicken for not coming up to a group of lil' ole girls lke us! :p ;)
GREAT game! I'm so glad I was there. And thanks to Shawn for sneaking Steve and I down to 130! Awesome seats! And O scored the GTG RIGHT IN FRONT OF US!!! How cool is that?!?
1st period was pretty lackluster but they made up for it in the 2nd and 3rd...nothing to complain about there. Glad to hear it's only the flu for Vrbata.....I was worried. Kurka is quite the little hockey machine....what's he played 32 games in 8 days or something? Not to mention the jet lag! Impressive goal too! Tanabe needs some stick-um on that stick of his.....or we could just trade him in the off-season....either way.
I HATE DARCY TUCKER!!!! Just had to get that out. He totally took a dive right before the Ward goal and then actually had the gall to complain about it to the refs. Dude! You dove! Do you really want to point that out? Idiot. Hope he gets a big, fat, 1K bill in the mail next week!
Oh...and GREAT save by Weekes on Mogilny in OT! Thanks for keeping that other point out of the nasty Leaf's hands!

Kat, you rock. Seriously.
*bows down*
Awww.. thanks <blush>.
I must say..... I don't know if it's been said yet... maybe it has... I dunno....
KAT YOU ROCK. :D

Yes, Kat. Good indeed! :) I hope this nonsense of booing anthems has come to an end for now.
Good game last night, all-in-all. Could've done without the first period and that 3rd Leafs goal *coughFIVEHOLEcough*. He made up for it in OT. And I agree that there were more rookie mistakes than usual. They'll learn. Poor Bruno got his pants pulled down by Mogilny late in OT. Suddenly he had that "oh sh*t, where's the puck?" look. He looked up to the heavens after Weekes made that incredible save.

Great game last night. I won't restate what everyone else has said, just some new ones.
1. Anyone see the guy that jumped onto the ice? He ended up getting arrested. His friend was seated near us and the guards were hounding him to find out whose season tickets they were using. They told him where to pick him up after the game.
2. I like the announcer's calling of the hit of the game. "When McCabe connected with...McCabe"
3. It was nice meeting Jeff O Rocks. Good to put a face with a name.
Sad to see Vrbata out, but our boys rallyed well without him. Good luck tonight.

we are leaving tomorrow for Colorado so I won't be at practice... we will be at the Avs vs. Coyote game on Saturday, though! :spin:
Kat, have fun! If you are planning on pulling a stunt like that guy did in Calgary earlier this year, make sure you're not wearing Hurricanes socks. Well, maybe Toronto socks. ;)

Tell Batesy we all miss him!!

What about that giveaway by Bruno to Mogilny? Anyone else's heart stop for a second and then cheer loudly for the save by Shady?
Aaryn
Bruno looked devastated after that. He chased Mogilny toward the goal and after Weekes' save, he fell down to his knees and dropped his chin to his chest (we had the perfect angle from our seats in 113). He kneeled there for a bit and got up and gave Weekes the "you saved my ass" tap. Then as he returned to the bench he tried to break his stick over his knees.

Another thing that had the North End laughing and clapping (and a partial standing O) was when Weekes tripped Domi as he cut thru the crease as the Canes were moving the puck out of the defensive end. Weeks just lifted his stick and Domi went flying. :D

Enjoyed this little read:
As for the Leafs' mental and defensive woes, the tying goal in Tuesday's disappointing 3-3 decision against the Carolina Hurricanes illustrates those problems. Like most of the goals the Leafs have allowed in the past week or so, during which many leads were surrendered, it was a result of the players standing around in their own end, forgetting their assignments.
The play started in the final minute with the Hurricanes employing six attackers after pulling their goaltender.
First, Leaf defenceman Aki Berg gave the puck away to Hurricanes centre Ron Francis, a common problem these days. Francis, who may be one of the oldest players in the NHL but also one of the smartest, went behind the Toronto net as the Leafs stopped to stare at him.
"If you are outnumbered, you don't go to the man behind the net," Quinn said, laying out the defensive responsibilities of the Leafs. "Make him bring [the puck] out. But don't give him a passout because your goaltender's playing him anyway."
At that point, Berg's defensive partner, Bryan McCabe, was at the side of the goal in order to cut off a pass into the slot. Centre Shayne Corson had Hurricanes winger Jeff O'Neill covered in front of the net.
"In this situation, we tossed the puck away, our defenceman ran to the guy who eventually got the puck back of the net," Quinn said, "and our centre started running to it. All of a sudden, they exposed us in an area you can't get exposed."
Maintaining position in this situation requires a great deal of mental discipline, as it is difficult to resist exclaiming to yourself, "Yikes! That's Ron Francis with the puck!" and rushing toward him.
Which is just what happened. First McCabe, and then Corson moved toward Francis, just what the Carolina star wanted. This left O'Neill wide open and Francis fired a pass to him and the puck was in the net.
"Those are the kind of mistakes we've been making lately," Quinn said. "In this case, it was just a scramble and panic set in.
"We're doing it because we're not doing the job where the puck is, even if we don't have it, which is [playing well] away from the puck."

Perhaps it was because I was trying to kill time during the drive back from Atlanta, but I was thinking about the number of players that played in the ECF series against the Leafs last year and how many were dressed for this game (and the Atlanta game for that matter).
Of the 20 players from the EFCs, only 8 were dressed for the Toronto game on Wednesday, 4 forwards, 4 defensemen:
Francis
ONeill
Vasicek
Daniels
Hill
Hedican
Ward
Wallin
The thing that I found interesting, is that of the 12 "new" players, only 1 player (St. Jacques) was acquired in trade for those that were missing. Tanabe, of course, missed all but Game 1 vs. the Devils.
Anyway, this is a long way to say that I think (hope) that Toronto was extremely humiliated by that tie to a team they barely recognized.
Guess it would have just been easier to reiterate that there were 5 rookies playing, along with the more "experienced" Watt, CMac, St. Jacques.
I know I wasn't the only person who had to chuckle to see the "PP tryout" where I think Tanabe was the oldest guy on the ice? Woulda loved it had they scored.
