fantasy 101

ok, I'll give a couple of hints, that might help you noobs ( ;) ) adjust to the world of fantasy sports a little.

1. you normally don't want a major portion of your team to be players from the same real team. (ie- 6-7 guys from colorado). while it might be a good team... if they go on a skid, your hurting. or, if you have 3 LW's from that team, but only 2 LW slots per day... you have one player that will have to rotate every time that team has a game.
not good.

2. goalies are verry important. if you don't have a good one that is going to play at least 60% of the time, you should consider trading what you can to get one. in the head to head league, you must get 3 goalie starts in Per Week... or no goalie stats count. Not only do they not count... but every category (I believe, if I remember correctly) goes to your opponent (provided they got their 3 starts in).
so, having 2 backup goalies on your team is going to cause you high blood pressure.

3. Maximums Per Position. this will be tricky for new people. It BURNED me the first time I played it... I spent the last third of the season trying to recover from my early 'play everyone, all the time' strategy.
each position has a certain # of times someone can be played there. hmm.. I just noticed Shell set the max in the Roto league as 95... so this may not matter. In fact, I can't think of how it would..
but I'll leave this here anyway, incase someone wants to discuss MPPs. heh

think that's it. should help a few of you I think. have fun, and feel free to ask questions. I won't be giving up any serious secrets... I like winning. ;) but I'll help as much as I can.

I don't mind having several Canes players - I have one center, one left wing, one right right and a couple of defense. What I am confused about is that it appears that default has 4 defense and 2 lines. The others are bench players. Is there a limit to how many lines there are or a certain number of players you have to bench?

you can play as many people as there are spots for, but that's it. most days, you'll have room to play whomever you want. some days, when every team in the league has a game, you'll have to choose which guys to play (ie- only 2 C's can play the same day).

Ok...I am clueless when it comes to Fantasy Sports, never play'em. However I am very interested to learn. Do most fantasy leagues cost money to play? Is there a free league out there practice with? How do I get started? Is it too late to start this season?

we play (and I have, for 6 years now) in Yahoo leagues. they're free.

it's too late to start if you really want to go through the whole process (drafting your team), and you'd probably get stuck with some so-so players. but, I think if you wanted to see how it worked, so that you know for next season, it might be a good idea to check it out.

though, I'm only guessing if I say you can still join one of the leagues we have going... I'm not sure what the cutoff date is.

probably a couple of threads down there's one for LGC fantasy hockey... Shell has 3 leagues. one is head to head, which you won't be able to join, because there needs to be an even amount of people. you'd quite litereally be the odd-man out.
there are 2 others though, and probably you'd be able to join one and check it out.

oh- and also, major points for digging up a very old thread (twice) to post questions in. ;)

Which leaves you with 2-- Rotisserie or Fantasy Points.
Rotisserie might be a little weird to figure out... whereas Fantasy Points is scored how most fantasy games work. A goal is worth x amount of points, an assist is worth x amount of points, etc..
your points build and you carry a total... which is how you're sorted out in the league.

With Rotisserie, each category is worth x amount of points. Say there's 13 teams in the league, so the manager with the most goals on a particular day will get 13 points. 2nd place in goals gets 12 points. last place gets 1 point. But the next day, if the leader has no goals, and the 4th place guy gets 6... he may move up to the lead (thereby getting 13 points in Goals), and yesterdays leader only gets 10 points now, so he will probably drop a spot or two in total rankings.

just different ways of scoring.
