There will be a game after the Canes' practice on Sunday. Admission is free, and I think there will be raffles and stuff. I will provide more info when I receive.

Here's the info that SHC posted on the temp home for us..

The Blueliners hockey team in conjunction with the Carolina Hurricanes and combined media services of Raleigh are staging a hockey game to benefit the Tom Stetson fund. We (the Blueliners) will be playing the media all-stars. The game will be held at the RBC center on 3/23 at 1:30 pm.

Stormy, The Storm Squad, Hurricanes players including Ron Francis,
Aaron Ward, & Jeff O'Neill and more can be anticipated. Fox Sport™
Play by Play announcer John Forsland will MC the game. (Carolina Hurricanes) TV Color Analyst & former Goalie Tripp Tracy. Also, (ABC Channel 11) Drew Smith, Ed Crump (WRAL Channel 5) Brian Deroy, Mark Roberts, Mike Crowley (News & Observer Hurricanes Sports Writer) Luke DeCock, Emily Cole (Former New York State Police & Spouse of Eric Cole of the Carolina Hurricanes) is anticipated to suit up with the media team. The spectators of honor will most certainly be Patty and Maria Stetson.

A Broilmaster grill donated by Mike Polarmo of Suburban Propane will
be among the Carolina Hurricanes autographed memorabilia as part of a raffle.

Admission is free with any donation graciously accepted at the door.

Please post this wherever you can. (See www.bluelinershockey.com for details.)

Thanks everyone, hope to see you there!

Kat I realize you had a bad experience playing against them in your hockey league, but this is a benefit game playing against media, etc. The Blueliners history is outlined in detail on their website.

Some excerpts:
The next event was the attack on the Twin Towers on September 11, 2001. This event took thousands of lives, many of which were law enforcement personnel from a multitude of agencies. One victim of this attack was Secret Service Officer Miller. Hurricanes Equipment Manager Bobby Gorman was a friend of many of the members of the Secret Service, one of which was Chip Sheehan, captain of the Secret Service Hockey Team. Chip suggested that the Secret Service and the Raleigh Police play an exhibition hockey game to raise funds for the Miller Family.

This sounded great except that the Raleigh Police did not have a formal team or hockey organization. Ken Mathias, John Fulton (Captain of the Alehouse Team) and Charlie Hassler (from Buffalo) quickly put together a team to play in this game. Bob Gorman and many Hurricanes staff members organized the event. Hurricanes players Ron Francis, Jeff O'Neill and Aaron Ward provided coaching for the two teams. Hurricanes personnel handled officiating and intermission activities while TV color analyst Tripp Tracy played in goal and TV play by play analyst John Forslund announced the game. This game was a success not only because it provided the Miller family with nearly $17,000, but it set the course for future Hurricanes/Raleigh Police community service events
....
The club is in the process of establishing a permanent charity fund which will provide funds for a variety of causes including the support of public safety members whose families have special needs. The club has traveled a long way in a short time. Its members intend to establish a tradition of hockey and community service among area public safety employees.

Sorry, but I guess I feel about them the way that SHC feels about Lemeiux (which maybe I understand now :) ). Sure, community service is great and all, but stacking your C league team with A league players, playing dirty, and getting special treatment from the arena and the refs sort of offsets that for me.

Hey....I may hate Mario but I'd donate to his charities any day. I understand hating when rec-league teams stack their teams and mow everyone else down....it's been done to me....so I totally get that. But I'll be there forking out the cash for the Stetson family even if it were the Rangers I'd be watching.

Another excerpt:
The "C", "B" and "A" teams have swept their respective league championships two seasons running.

This is because they stack their teams... they play the better players in the lower level leagues even though they are not officially on the roster. Also, the refs (understandably, I guess) don't call anything against them or enforce any of the rules that would prevent stacking. And having a coach, your own changing facilities, access to ice time... it is just a bit frustrating to play in a league where you know that you will never be able to win certain games because of circumstances that are somewhat unfair and totally beyond your control. It is very likely that I will not continue to play at the Iceplex, actually, because there is no way that you can compete. And what would happen anyway if you beat a bunch of guys that have the ability to pull you over, etc.?

I am probably just bitter, and it shouldn't keep you from going to their benefit. After all, there are Canes involved and I am sure that it is for a good cause.

If I hopefully get to come this Sunday (As Baldwick would say in the Blackadder series, I have a cunning plan...), based on what Kat said, I'll more than likely will cheer the media team on. Got to support the team with O, Ronnie, and Cole's wife...even if they have Chopper, DeCock, and Tripp playing.

BTW, I just noticed that the article said "Admission is free with donation.". How much do they exactly want for a donation? Just curious...

Let's all remember this is a FUNDRAISING EVENT, not a competition on any level against Kat's team or any other recreation hockey league where results mean ANYTHING. Sorry to feel compelled to use capital letters, but the only people I will "support" is the family for whom they have chosen to raise money. It seems like this has gotten off track a bit. I know Kat wasn't trying to sway people into going or not going, rooting or not rooting for a particular group, but rather just adding her personal experience with part of this group in a totally different setting.

As far as a donation, it is completely up to you SB. Give what can, if you can. This event's sole purpose is to raise money for a family in need, so while there is no minimum amount that's expected, a donation seems appropriate, imo.

Just wondering if there was a minimum for donation...I *really* do want to give something for the family for which the money's being raised (Well said about the event being a fundraising one, BTW Eileen.). Sorry to sound so grumpy above, but I thought the charitable aspect needed to be emphasized. The Blueliners have only existed for 18 months or so (post 9/11/01), so maybe they haven't gotten their act together on the fair competitive front. Since they were created initially for fundraising events, maybe they've got that part better focused or something. :smoke:

Sorry to sound so grumpy above, but I thought the charitable aspect needed to be emphasized. The Blueliners have only existed for 18 months or so (post 9/11/01), so maybe they haven't gotten their act together on the fair competitive front. Since they were created initially for fundraising events, maybe they've got that part better focused or something. :smoke:

I am going to be a bit grumpy in return. Nowhere in any of my posts did I say not to support their charitable causes. All I said is that I don't think that they play fair and I will not show to watch them play. That is not to say that I wouldn't give to their charities, or that you should not. And as SHC so aptly said, you don't have to support/watch a team/player that you don't like in order to contribute to their causes.

As far as the fair play thing goes, before they established themselves as the Blueliners at the Iceplex, they either quit or got removed from the RecZone due to their dissatisfaction about how the rules were enforced (i.e. that they were).

I actually attended the Raleigh PD vs. Secret Service (i think) benefit game last year. It was a ton of fun. The players rotated acting as coaches and they gave away Canes tickets and some other stuff I think. Very high-scoring game, IIRC. I recommend going if you have the time. :)

I understand Kat, I didn't think you meant it that way, which is why I later wrote:

I know Kat wasn't trying to sway people into going or not going, rooting or not rooting for a particular group, but rather just adding her personal experience with part of this group in a totally different setting.

Both of my friends who could take me are out for the count, but my dad is strongly considering being my cheuffeur that day. If he can take me, wish me luck, for this is my golden opportunity to somewhat convert my dad...

Well, that was a hoot! Seriously, it was...I got to the RBC around 1:10-1:15, and was able to get an on-the-glass seat! :spin: The only real annoyance was a group of four little kids who practically got just a little more than excited every time that not only a Media Team goal was scored, but whenever Stormy wandered nearby or there was a Blueliner penalty. Unlike those rascals, I was cheering both teams on in what was a high scoring but close (Especially near the end...more on that in a moment.) game...the final score being Media Team - 9, Blueliners - 8. Here are ze highlights:

Star Search - Besides the players already mentioned as coaches for the two teams (Jeff Daniels and Aaron Ward for the Blueliners, and Ron Francis and Sean Hill for the Media Team.), John Forslund (Announcing and hosting the game.), Tripp Tracy (Who ended up NOT playing goalie, but instead forward...and he got a goal! Way to go Tripp! :spin:), Chopper Harrison (Who got a combination of cheers and (fun) jeers from the crowd...), Emily Cole, and quite a few others, here were some surprise guests at today's game...

Jeff O'Neill - He did show up afterall! Yay! :) I didn't see him much during the game. But before the game, he was hanging around the Media Team's bench, chatting with Ronnie, Sean, and a few Media Team members.

Coach Mo - Pretty cool seeing the coach himself being one of the first ones out of the locker room. After talking with Jeff, Ronnie, and others for a moment, Mo took his place a few rows behind the Media Team's bench.

Arturs Irbe - Unfortunately, I didn't see him. But, John and the people around me claimed he was there.

Craig Adams - One half of the Adams family showed up in the middle of the game, and hung around with the Media Team for the remainder.

Mean Gene - I saw you during the intermissions, dude. Glad to see you're back on the job. C-ya Saturday night! :)

Erik Cole - Mr. Buckle-Up was indeed there, along with his daughter. He looked very happy to be there, just like the majority of people participating. It was cute seeing him point out various things and people on the ice to his daughter. :)
______________________________

Skin Trade - A trade was actually made before the third period...by the Blueliners! They traded Chopper to the Media Team for a bag of pucks. :D

Penalties? - Yes Virginia, there were penalties called this game. The first two penalties were dished out to the Media Team in the form of Randy Ladouceur and Kevin McCarthy joining their team a little too late, and creating a Too Many Men On the Ice situation. Then, there were a couple of more penalties issued to the Blueliners, but the first penalties were much more memorable. :)

And they're off! - The game's score could not tell you this, but for a while, the Media Team led the Blueliners 5-0. But, because this was a fun game, the Media Team and refs were generous enough to give the Blueliners oppotunities in the form of goofing off (Two of the "coaches" dressed up like refs, and clowned around a bit. :D) and pulling the goalie.

Overall, a great time was had by all. In the end, I got a few souvenirs in the form of raffle tickets, a Ronnie schedule magnet calendar, and 96Rock bumper sticker featuring the Sightless Eye. Speaking of souvenirs, I almost caught a shirt from a Storm Squad member! Sorry I didn't see any of you. Hope everyone from here who went had a good time! :)

We actually got lucky and won something! We never win anything! We got a commemorative bottle of wine....it has the Canes logo and Eastern Conference Champions 2001-2002 sorta engraved into and it's signed by most of last year's team. Pretty cool!

The game was a lot of fun....Emily Cole is pretty freakin' good too. She made one awesome play in which she SHOULD have gotten an assist but it was at one of those points in the game where the blueliners had 2 guys posing as refs on the ice and they waved the goal off. Pretty funny.

Indeed she did. I ran into them in the parking lot as I was leaving and it was none other than Rons#1Fan that won the stick! I also met BretFan/Mookie!

My kids didn't win anything from the raffle, but each one nabbed a Tshirt thrown from the Storm Squad.

I can vouch for it - SHC's wine bottle was pretty darn cool!

Nice event for a great cause. And I reluctantly ;) give Tripp props for being extremely comfortable both on the ice and with the microphone. He did a nice job of joking commentary (as did Forslund) in between shifts.

Oh and one more thing.....Hey Mona! Weren't you sitting RIGHT BESIDE of the lady that won Jeff O'Neill's stick? SO CLOSE! Did you at least get to touch it?

Eileen...were those by any chance your kids sitting right near me up front? Just curious, since if any of those kids were yours, you had to be behind me. :)

Tripp actually did a decent job today...he not only got a goal, but also did some good commentary and interviewing. If I didn't know better, I'd have to say that Tripp has been improving over the last couple of games, including this one...

Nope (and they'd never be that obnoxious anyway ;) ) we were in row Q in 118 I think.

Well, he was definitely the most at ease - Chopper sounded like a doofus. He must have begged Ward to trade him to the other team so he didn't have to skate any more since he was barely moving out there. (Which he didn't.)

You must have been sitting right in front of me. Those children sound very familiar :)

It was good fun and I hope a lot of money was raised for the family. There were lots of great items in the raffle.

Even I have to admit that Tripp did a good job (can't tell you how that pains me to say ;) ) John did his usual good job.

Nice to see the players coaching and some of them just hanging out watching like the rest of us.

If you were behind me, I was the one wearing an old-fashioned goaltender's mask with the Sightless Eye painted on. Also, whenever a goal was scored, I did a "YOOOOUUUUU!", my trademark "battle cry". Sound familiar in any way? :)

Anyone behind or near me would have to have a reeeeal short memory to forget the four kids somewhat next to me. I hate saying this about those kids, but how obnoxious could they get? I realize it was the thrill of being at a game, getting to see the players and Stormy and all, but GEEZ...where was the "Calm/sit down so others can enjoy the game." comment of sorts from the parent/s?

I probably should have said something, but it doesn't help that I'm shy, don't like ruining kids (Especially little ones.) having fun, and had the fear of ticking off their parents for just merely saying "Calm down.". Oh well...nothing stopped me from giving those buggers quite a few stares. To whoever it was, be it you TalkingCanes or someone else, who got the guts to tell the kids to calm down, thank you! :)

Nice to see the players coaching and some of them just hanging out watching like the rest of us.

Yes it was...as I said before, it was just nice to see everyone out and having a good, fun time. Especially after last night's debacle of a game...

Hey You All ! Yup, I was "the lady" next to Mona that won the O stick ! I offered it to Mona (yes I did) but she said she already had an autographed one....but that didn't stop her from drooling all over it !!!

We had great fun. Kids were on the jumbotron...two girls in pink sweat jackets.

Of course I found myself watching the Media bench a little too much because of my man Ron being there (Hee-Hee).

All in all, a great afternoon out for a good cause. NCCANES...it was great meeting you out in the parking lot with Mona. It was nice to finally meet another forum fan.

Yes! You were behind me! I'm not sure I could remember what you looked like (As you observed, my eyes were very much on the game, ice, and players' benches the entire time.), but I definitely remember the woman telling the kids to sit down. When she did that, I was like "THANK YOU!" on the inside. Glad the kids did as she asked...though they still were a little loud, they were a little more controlled. Tell your friend I said "Thanks." regarding that. ;)

Sounds like y'all had fun. How many people were there?

Husband and I decided to bag the game and spend the day outside, since the weather was so beautiful. We went hiking along the Eno, then wandered around at the Flea Market at the Fairgrounds for awhile. Lovely day. . . . .

So-- have you drank all the wine yet, SHC?!! ;)

Quite a few people were there...you were allowed to sit in Sections 116-122. And though there were a few seats left, there weren't too many left, and it was overall a good sized crowd.

I have to agree with the Emily Cole comments. She looked real good out there. My husband and I were real impressed with her...other than #2 on the Media side who scored 3 goals, Emily was one of the best on the team ! With parents like Emily and Erik, I'm sure Bella has a good chance of being a future NHL star... :D

I just got an extremely nice, hand-written "Thank You" note from Patty Stetson today thanking us for our donation at the charity game! We didn't have any cash so we wrote a check....I'm assuming that's how they got our address. Isn't that awesome? Far more than I'd ever expect someone to do.

I was thinking I wanted to send back a note with another check in it (we can skip a meal or two out for that) but then I realized there was no return address on it. Oh well.

Just thought I'd share that with you guys. Apparantly our funds went to a great family. :spin:
