Canes will be home taking on Buffalo tomorrow.

I don't really have time to post an actual game thread (boring details so nevermind about that).

Anyway, I'll leave it in your hands to update with previews and game info tomorrow.

Discuss.

From ch.com:

and this:
http://www.caneshockey.com/gameday/previews.asp?previewid=200

We will catch Buffalo on the second half of a back-to-back. They are currently playing Montreal and they are beating them 4-0 in the second period!

Edited to add: I notice that Tomas Malec is not listed among the injured...I hope that means that it looked worse than it was.

I can tell you one thing for sure, it will sure be a (mis)adventure...you never know what will happen when we play the Sabres.

Maybe Craig Adams can work some more OT magic for us...I just hope we don't turn in an effort like we did in Atlanta. That was pitiful.

I'm hoping to see a big Canes win tonight. Buffalo will be tired, hopefully the Canes will be ready to make up for the beating they suffered in Atlanta, and it's the 7th man contest day for me and my dad! I believe the player we're going to meet is Wallin, they wanted to get him because he's well....number 7, and this was the....7th man contest. So...anything you guys want me to ask or tell him? I'm leaving in a few minutes. I'll be back on later hopefully with pictures and to tell everyone how things went.

Go Canes!

There's a nice article about Hedican in the Durham Herald (online) from yesterday.

This was in the Notes after the article:
"Maurice said Kevin Weekes, who is playing with a very sore right hand, should get the start in goal tonight. Arturs Irbe could play, the coach said, but Irbe has a small fracture in his right hand as well."

Great attendance! :D I heard it was sold out tonight. Everyone left kind of early though. Early on 2 Sabres ran into each other and injured one of them..don't see that every day.

To bad we got all those 5 on 3's..really killed out chances. Overall I think we really outplayed them we just couldn't get past the goalie, typical luck this year.

We can do better next year, with a renewed and revived team.

ugh. how many shots on goal did we have? 39? ugh. at first i thought this was one of those gift-from-the-ref games, but we got our power plays too and did NOTHING. grr.

highlights: good crowd. nice goal by brad. kurka traded in his frequent flyer miles for a spot on the first line... the forslund focus was on ronnie and he got a (well deserved) standing ovation. :smoke:

lowlights: our PP. the refs (although sean did get knocked into one, haha), 3 goals on 15 shots. too many people in buffalo jerseys.

yeah 39 shots on goal, but how many were scoring chances?? Anyone watching it on TV know?? Also, did they show the replay when we started a powerplay and it sure looked like we had a goal, the puck quickly bounced out and play continued. 4 guys on the storm squad were actually screaming at the dude sitting on his stool not lighting the light. I never got to see the replay but we had the perfect view of it and it looked like it was in all the way? Officiating was horrendous. A lot of the players didn't really seem like they cared to be there. Radim has a great scoring touch, but should not even try to move the puck in our zone.
Who's in front of the freaking net???
Too bad it was a lousy game, that crowd So wanted to be loud, but it was hard to cheer after a while.

Yes, I agree Hyena. I knew the penalties would most likely even out a bit (2 5 on 3s in 1 period!), but I was terribly disappointed with our PP.

The crowd was great, too bad there wasn't much to cheer about after the 1st.

The game between teams well out of the playoff picture drew a near-sellout crowd of 17,677.

Wow. This must be scary:

Meanwhile, the Sabres were short-handed in this one as defensemen Rhett Warrener and Brian Campbell were under observation in Buffalo after possibly being exposed to a mysterious and potentially deadly respiratory illness.

Team spokesman Mike Gilbert said the decision to hold the players back from traveling to North Carolina was a precaution, and that neither has shown anysigns of being infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome, or SARS.

And no offense to O'Neill, but if any Cane was going to get a star (and I was surprised any did), I think Defauw should have. He played 11+ minutes, had 4 shots, a goal and at least one other good scoring chance. He busted hump the whole game.

Well, I had a great time tonight, despite the outcome of what I attended. I met quite a few nice people, got some great goodies, and experienced a game that was good, bad, and ugly...

The Good:

By DeFauw-t - Chalk up a goal for Mr. Brad DeFauw, with assistance by Senior Jeff Daniels and Monsieur Bruno St. Jacques! As I have said a few times, if only there had been a few more of those.

TV Eye - I think I got on television, but I do not know thanks to my wonderful Canes "liking" brother not watching tonight's game, but instead the Wildcats of Kentucky getting clobbered by the Golden Eagles who hail from Marquette. (sighs) Serves him right for thinking those puddytats were going all the way AND not supporting the Canes like he should. Anyway, I did not even know I was on TV (Or the Jumbotron.) until the friend who took me to the game pointed at the camera being trained on me and my section. If any of you happened to see me on TV/tape and/or recorded the game and can make a copy, please e-mail me. Thank you in advance. :)

Forslund's Francis Focus - Say that five times fast. :D If there is any reason I am truly proud to attend this game, it was to be part of the crowd that gave a standing ovation for John Forslund's fantastic Focus on the one and only Ron Francis. Even cooler was seeing the Franchise himself step onto the ice and skate by, waving to the crowd. A great celebration for a great man...

General Public - Outstanding turnout for this game...this and the February 14th Washington game are easily the best crowds I have seen out of the games I attended this season. Unfortunately, other than when DeFauw scored, you could never tell that the crowd was that good. But of course, it is just hard to cheer when the rubber biscuit and the back of the net cannot shake hands, get together, and be friends.

Goodies! - I racked up on the souvenir front tonight. First, I got an Erik Cole cup, the only one of the three cups my collection was lacking. Then, I brought myself a Caniac Convertable raffle ticket (Wish me luck!) and a Cookin' With the Canes cookbook (One of only five copies left!) from the Kids 'N Community Foundation booth. And then, I got a set of team cards and a game day card featuring Kevin Weekes from The Eye. AND THEN, I got a free puck advertising this game and Advair when I left.

The Seventh Man - Saw Folgers' dad get his Seventh Man Contest jersey at the beginning of the first intermission. As I have said plenty of times, congratulations dudes, and hope you had a blast! 8)

The Bad:

Miles of Aisles - While the crowd was overall a very good one, it was very disappointing to see half or more people leaving with two minutes left in the third period. C'mon people...everyone following the Canes and hockey knows that there is always a chance for two goals to be scored in that amount of time. It is a slim chance, but it is A CHANCE. (sighs) But unfortunately, this is not the only time such a crowd situation has happened this season...

Reversal of Fortune - OVER THIRTY SHOTS ON GOAL, and the Canes still could not buy more than one goal. Therefore making Noronen look like quite the swashbuckler and Weekes look like kitty litter.

The Ugly:

Death Penalties - I seriously do not know if I am more ticked with the refs or the Canes who "committed" the penalties that led to two five-on-three power plays for Buffalo. Notice I use committed loosely...I seriously did not see three of the four penalties for which a few Canes were supposedly guilty. Interestingly, Buffalo committed penalties that were quite the opposite of most of the ones called upon the Canes. If there was any image that could sum up the game and the officiating for it, it was my seeing Buffalo's backup goalie, Biron, chatting with a ref during one of the breaks in the final two minutes of the game. Can I please have "Things That Make You Go Hmmmm..." for $500, Alex?

Other Notes:

One-Timer - A man who sat next to me at the game was a father taking his daughter to her first ever hockey game. It was so cute how he explained all the aspects to her, and was pointing at various players and objects on the ice (Reminded me a lot of Erik Cole and his wee one attending the Blueliners Charity game. :)). Before the game ended, I told him that at least his daughter got to see a goal scored at her first game, then proceeded to tell him about my first game (January 15th against the Pens) resulting in a shutout.

The Neverending Season - The Canes looked awful tired tonight, and just physically pleading for this nightmare of a season to be over. I feel for those dudes...that clean slate and fresh start certainly could not get here quick enough. And we still have over six months until those two things arrive. (sighs)

Star Power - As much as I like O'Neill, I am heavilly questioning why he got the third star tonight. What exactly did he do? DeFauw should have definitely gotten the third for actually scoring a goal. Oh well...congrats to O anyway for getting that third star AND not making the three stars all Sabres.

I probably had more of a good time than I should have with the loss and all...but my goal was to make the best of this game regardless of the end, with it possibly being the last one I will get to attend this season. And, I certainly feel like I obtained that goal well... :)

So, we all know I love O'Neill but I'm puzzled about that 3rd star thing too. He did have 9 shots on goal, true, and I do feel like he had a very good game but I agree....DeFauw should have had that one. Not just because he scored but because he really did bust his butt the whole game....and almost had at least one other goal.

OK....new goal for the Hurricanes....never, EVER double your opponents shot total. Seems we always lose the game when we do that. Not sure why.

I think Buffalo played a good game defensively but not so great offensively. If those first two goals had not been handed to them by a combination of refing and defense we might have been able to pull this one out.

Oh well. All I ask is that we win at least one more home game this season...and I'd prefer it be Monday night.

Another note I forgot to add...

Backstreet Boys?! - I apologize if I offend any Backstreet Boys fans, but their music at a hockey game?! I realize that the Canes org and CanesVision were and are trying to come up with creative ways to get the crowd ready for an opposing team's player going to the Sin Bin and the ensuing power play. But, I think they could do a tad bit better than playing "Bye, Bye, Bye".

I realize that the Canes org and CanesVision were and are trying to come up with creative ways to get the crowd ready for an opposing team's player going to the Sin Bin and the ensuing power play. But, I think they could do a tad bit better than playing "Bye, Bye, Bye".

I, too, had to wonder WTF with Jeff O getting the 3rd star, as he was next to invisible much of this game. I don't think this season can be over fast enough for our guys, unfortunately. Kudos to Briere for skating over to a Canes kid after the game & giving him his stick. :) Thumbs up to DeFauw, JD and Bruno! ;)

Jeez....why do we always run into a hot goalie? Not that that was our only problem...We played great 1st and 2nd periods, and a mediocre 3rd...we outclassed the competition for the majority of the game and they still won by 2 goals. What's the point? 2 5 on 3s in a matter of minutes in the first? The refs gave them the game. Not that we we were saints by any means, but sheesh!

the first time they were given a 5 on 3 was bad, the second time was a complete joke. if the officials have never seen a dive, they should look at that play again.

that said, both 5 on 3 goals were identical and both were scored directly in front of me so I saw every aspect. you'd think we'd catch on after the first one. the scorer was different but the play was identical as was the result.

I hope we win monday because if the playoff race hasn't been completed by next Sunday the Isles will bring everything they have and that could be real ugly on Fan Appreciation Day!

The diving "non-call" was the worst....they showed the replay several times on the jumbotron and each time, the boos got louder....the refs suck...they have all year and get worse with each game!!

I have somthing else to add. New nomination for WORST fans in the league: Buffalo.

I can not believe the sheer volume of a**holes around me last night. Two guys in the next section over almost got in a fight near the end of the game. One was an obnoxious as all hell Buffalo fan. The other, a slightly less obnoxious BUFFALO FAN! Fighting amongst themselves....how classey.

The guys in front of us smirked and made fun when Ronnie was the Forslund Focus. If you can't give a little respect to Ronnie Francis then you've just shown that you know NOTHING about hockey, IMO. Luckily for my poor husband, they didn't get too terribly angry when I told them that.

These same guys also seemed to think that the call that gave them the second 5 on 3....you know the diver...was exactly the right call and proceeded to let every one of the Canes fans around them know just how stupid we all are. I mean even Toronto and Detroit fans that I've sat near admitted when a call was completely bogus.

And then there were the roving parking lot screamers....shouting "Hurricanes suck" and other such loveliness. The one guy in the parking lot shouting "My sucky team is better than your sucky team" made me laugh like hell though.

Overall, nasty bunch of Buffalo fans in my area (306...up where all those kids...the youth Checkers team I think...were) at least.

Easily, based on what you just mentioned SHC. I can't believe anyone would have the damned gall to make fun of Ronnie. Not only shows a lack of hockey knowledge, but just a lack of respect and politeness in general. And yes, I heard those parking lot screamers as my friend and I were riding away in his friend's Jeep. The amount of Buffalo jerseys polluting the RBC's stands last night was just atrocious...

LOL, that just made my morning. And you are correct, anyone who makes fun of Ronnie or cannot give him the respect that he deserves, knows nothing about hockey. Sorry you had such a sour experience with Buffalo fans.

Right on, Mona! I kind of wish myself that O could have kicked the living tar out of that stupid-butt Buffalo fan. As much as O admires and looks up to Ronnie (Everytime he's been asked who his influences are, who his favorite player was/is, etc.; O always mentions Ronnie.), you bet he would have given that jerk what he should have had coming to him...

About fans like that guy...that's not being a good fan to boo and make fun of stuff like the Forslund Focus about Ronnie. Whenever one goes to an opposing team's arena, the proper thing to do is to cheer for things like the Forslund Focus, especially when it's about players like future hall-of-famers and/or just plain great guys. To not do so is absolute disrespect, not just for that player, their team, and their fans, but also the sport of hockey in general.

I couldn't agree with you more. Section 109 was FULL of those. They were the rudest, most obnoxious group of fans i've ever experienced. Even worse than Leafs and Wings fans put together. (and they're pretty brutal)
