Dallas Stars owner Tom Hicks says he's not ready to push the panic button just yet, but admits his finger is very close to the trigger.

"I'm obviously disappointed, but I'm satisfied (GM) Doug (Armstrong) understands the issues," Hicks tells the Dallas Morning News.

"We're trying to see if there is anything else we can do externally, and we're exploring that, and we'll see if anything comes of it."

The Stars are off to a 7-8-1-0 start and have lost four in a row for the first time since 1996.

Hicks says he would like to see the leaders on the team step up and play better.

"We're one of the highest payroll teams in the league, and we wouldn't be there if we didn't anticipate making the playoffs," said Hicks.

The Stars payroll currently stands at $67.5-million, third highest in the NHL.

Armstrong says he's prepared to give the players every opportunity to work their way out of the current slump. But he cautions that things could change if situation doesn't improve 30 or 40 games into the season.

"As an organization, we're in a funk. There will be some defining moment that when we do turn this around, we'll look back and say, 'That was it.' I don't know when it will be, but I hope it's soon."
