The Hurricanes travel to Buffalo to take on the Sabres tonight. This is the second of back-to-backs for the Canes.
Buffalo (8-8-2-1) is very good against the Canes on home ice. After a very good October, the Sabres have slipped a bit in November. They are struggling, as the Canes are, to score goals. The most noticable slumping forward would have to be Miroslav Satan who has only 9 points and is a -10 so far this season. Go ahead and bank on him scoring tonight.
The Canes come into tonight's game well rested after a couple of night's off. They were supposed to play Ottawa last night but sent some guys named Frank and Larry in their place. My dead uncle James was propped behind the bench to give the illusion of a coach and a carboard box was put in net. So there's no excuses for them not being ready for the game.
All bitterness aside, look for Jamie Storr in net tonight. Martin Biron will likely start for Buffalo.
Watch if you dare. Here's the pre-game skate (http://www.carolinahurricanes.com/news/news.asp?articleid=1137) from ch.com. Discuss.

hhmmm, Friday night... we may have to tape it, get drunk, and watch it late night ;)
While the Buffalo paper (http://www.buffalonews.com/editorial/20031121/1057251.asp) says they are looking forward to the soft schedule ahead starting tonight, they are a bit worried about playing us because they don't play well against the bottom feeders. Ouch, that hurts coming from a powerhouse like Buffalo. Can't say it's not true though.
um, go canes. I suspect they may win tonight. They like to do that after getting their collective arses handed to them so that they can say we're doing just fine.

Where is guyute's trademarked slogan?
Was there something about the cure for a slumping PP? The paper said that Buffalo is 0-29 (or something) on the PP recently.
I would like a win please. I have tickets for Sunday's game and I'd hate to lose my mind and start cheering for TLT (and can I say how much it warms my heart that TLT has become accepted lgc vernacular? Of course, I realize that it's a lot shorter than typing "St. Louis" ;). )

what slogan E? the 'slump breakers' and stuff?
can't say it's not right.
and yes, we'll most likely win tonight, so JR & Mo can say "well, we got 2 points out of 4 in 2 road games, so I don't think we're too far off the mark".
I'M SICK OF HEARING THAT. when you lose games 7-1, 6-1, 5-1. I really don't care if you win the next one 2-1. so that's my prediction. we win this one 2-1. papers tomorrow have happy-happy-joy-joy quotes from the big boys about how great the win was, and the rest is in the past.
I just need to watch every other game, and stop reading boards. ignorance is bliss.

I'm tired of thinking to myself, OK, if they beat team X, Y, and Z, they'll be back at .500 and looking good again.
Enough.
Just beat Buffalo. Tonight. Period. Please!
I still don't doubt that we have the talent to make some noise this season, even after getting shellacked 7-1 by Washington and 6-1 by Ottawa. When the Canes are skating with what I call the "swagger" that got us to the Finals, we dominate teams.
Here's my vow to myself: I'm not going to use the word "if" or "next" any more this season when it comes to the Canes. Either they'll win tonight or they won't.

All right call me the eternal optimist, but WHEN we win tonight, this will complete the fifth of our 17 back to back game sets. After WE WIn tonight, that will make us 1-3-1 in the first part of back to backs and 3-1-1 in the second half. Is it just me or should those two sets of numbers be reversed. Why do we play better on the second half of back to backs? Just curious.

Why do we play better on the second half of back to backs? Just curious.
Because the Canes tend not to show up for the first half, therefore needing a big game in the second to redeem themselves.
This is one of the best paragraphs i've yet read on this board. Had quite the chuckle, i did.
The best thing about having a game tonight is that i get to read crazy's game report.
The worth part is that aw crap not another game against a team the Canes will likely take lightly.

We WILL WIN TONIGHT! How do I KNOW? The Canes love tourturing us massochistic fans by providing us with just enough hope to keep us holding out for what they could/should be. It's a fun game they love to play with us. PK and JR are having a big 'ole laugh. "Look at those people cling to hope!, HAHAHA How long do you think we can string them along?"

Now is the time for all good hockey players to come to the aid of their team.
Guys, it's now or never:
No stupid penalties.
Actually get IN the zone on the PP.
Actually play offense, not scoot the biscuit around the tape until you get to go play D in your end.
Try playing someone near the crease. It actually works.
Actually shoot the puck when you're open. And try to actually hit the puck. Double-pumps are for sissies.
Actually make the hit on D. Make them pay for daring to get in front of Weekes.
Actualy HUSTLE the WHOLE game.
Act like you care about the fans, and show them that you WANT to win.

My prediction:
Canes lose 6-1 (again)
Satan scores 4 (three on the PP)
O'Neill gets in a fight
Staal scores the lone Canes goal

O'Neill gets in a fight
Bonus points if you correctly predict whether the opponent will be a Sabre, one of his teammates, or a fan who made the trip up to Buffalo.
Or, perhaps, all of the above.

See, if most of you guys were as angry as early this season as I was you'd now be beyond all this and like me......at zen with the mediocrity. I don't even care if we win tonight. A tight sorta stunned numbness can be considered zen, right?
The part of me that holds out any hope at all for the rest of this season should be shot because, quite honestly, it is really, really hoping for another 5-1 loss tonight so that JR HAS to stop ignoring the problem. The part of me who is so completely cynical about this organization it can barely breath says it won't matter if we lose every game the rest of the year 10-0 because JR will just keep making excuses. Then there is the numb part....I choose it.
Last night was the first time EVER I have questioned whether or not this team (excepting Danny Markov) even has the talent to be stepping on the ice with the rest of this league. That is sad.
I'll be watching....perhaps balled up in the corner maniacally laughing but watching.

2-2 tie tonight. Desperate Canes fight, scrap, and claw for respectability. The boys outhit, outhustle, and outshoot the Sabres but run into "bad luck and a hot goalie" causing us to only get the one point. Goals by Staal and Markov(PP).
The Canes, feeling good that they put together a strong effort in Buffalo, come back to the RBC and lose 3-2 to the Lightning after a frantic third period comeback falls short.

I said much the same just a little while ago at lunch.
that I really hate to say, or even think it, but it might be good if we get crushed tonight... that way JR can't ignore the TRUTHS we're seeing. he can't point to the win and say-- well, 1-1 on the road really ISN'T bad.
It's so horrible that true fans are actually hoping for a loss so that something might be done. but that's the point it is starting to come to.
I don't think it matters though.. they will win, because it's the 2nd game of a back-to-back, when they just got embarassed. so they'll show up. Sunday however... is a home game, and worse yet, a PACK game (we've only won ONE of the 24 pack games).
so, here's to getting sh*tcanned in the parking lot on sunday, enjoying tasty brews, good company and gorgeous weather. for when 7pm rolls around and I walk into the arena, the highpoint of the day might've already passed.

I'm going to take this opportunity for a quick little sidebar comment. The best thing that happened during any Canes power play last night - late in the 3rd, with the Canes on the PP, Boulerice was put in... AND FOR A LITTLE WHILE THERE, PLANTED HIMSELF IN FRONT OF LALIME!!!!!
Of course no one was able to get a shot off or get the puck anywhere near him, but blast it, HE WAS THERE!!!
OK, back to the old routine. We all know that unless the Canes are down 6-1 again, Boulerice won't be back on a PP, and when the Canes are on the PP, no one will have the same mindset he did. But it was a pleasant little surprise!

You really could have left 'Sens' out of that sentence and just put a big blank. The Canes wouldn't be able to find the back of the net with a 60-minute PP against the bloody Capitals.

What helps the franchise more? A message that we're all tired of this crap? Booing our team on home ice? Staying away in droves? Seriously, there's not much more we can do. I'm beginning to wonder if franchise stability is on the radar screen of our GM and he may be getting instructions to seek out new cities. Or maybe transfer to the WHA when the feces makes abrupt contact with the rotational oscillation device during the 2004-2005 strike.

Because this is the way my luck has gone:
Andy Delmore will get a hat-trick, thus netting me a buttload of fantasy points. However, all of those points will be taken away from me by the fact that Jamie Storr is one of my goalies. But all is not lost! I'll end up a +15 on the night pointswise, because Joe, Lord of Evil will keep the game from being a shutout.

Yeah, someone actually must have hit Mo in the head with a beer at the last home game because he FINALLY took Vrbata off the point then. I remember because my seat neighbors were laughing histerically because I was screaming "OMG Vrbata is off the point!! Vrbata is off the point!!!" And guess what? We scored on that PP!! The Canes have to start winning or something has to be done. In my opinion the overall team is much better than last year, more consistant goaltending tandem, a greatly improved defence corp and basically healthy forwards. The power play this year stinks with the same core as the last couple of years. Even though I have always tried to support Mo I am starting to think that the system is to blame. If the coach won't try changing up the plan of attack then maybe the next step is to try changing the coach. We know the players can do the job, we've all seen it.

I can't believe the Sabres are up on us 4 to zip, Buffalo on a Power Play....I just inhaled a crap load of toffee coated peanuts. If the Hurricanes keep this kind of play up, I'm going to be 200 pounds in no time !!!

holy *&*^%#$, I am usually suzy sunshine, but i'm feeling sick right about now. Where's the heart that i fell in love with? I see a bunch of empty jerseys, I see Ron Francis playing on the 4th line, and I see the same coach behind the bench that I see at every heartbreaking, mind numbing loss. When is it going to change? I feel sorry for the handful of guys on the team who still give a rat's @ss.
My thoughts exactly. It's so hard when we can't score worth a damn, and then to have the "1st grade class chased by swarm of bees" defense on top of it...I don't think I can watch any more tonight. I know I have a good bottle of bourbon around here somewhere....

Another HOT (back-up) goalie? NO MO!!! Another flat performance.
I turned it off at 3-0, because, though I love the team, they just can't score 4+ goals in the same game (or same week right now). MO kept looking at his score/line sheet... or was it a flight schedule?
A change is needed, can't dump players, too much is invested to "call" the season a loss, so it must be MO.

11-21-2003, 09:40 PM
Why is it that it's almost December and I can't name off the lines on a consistent basis? Why is Ronnie not a top line player? Is he asking to cut back his minutes? Why isn't the adams +Murray line not out there 20 minutes a game like they should be? Why wasn't Staal vasicek vrbata out there more? Why was Bayda sitting out the game instead of (take your pick)? Why doesn't Boulerice throw down the gloves when we are down 2 or 3 to zero?
Last but not least, Why does Mo keep convincing himself that we have a team with "interchangeable lines?" You only have a working interchangeable line system if we are SCORING! I'M GONNA POUND MY HEAD INTO MY COMPUTER AFTER TONIGHT'S GAME, like the Sesame Street guy who writes songs at a piano and when he gets frustrated slams his muppet head into the piano keys. THAT'S HOW I FEEL!!!!
Are we trying to do what we did in 2001-2002 where we get to the brink of Firing Mo' then the team gets fired up and gets to the SCF? Maybe not. I don't think the players are fired up about keeping Mo either, not even with Mike Keenan breathing down their necks.
Oh, I got another idea. Why don't we put all out effort against these crap teams and stop wasting so much energy on philly, tampa bay, etc. We might as well put a stronger effort against the weak teams so maybe we could win instead of tying the strong teams and being so spent against these weak teams. Oh wait, we had a day off with Ottawa, this was supposed to be a strong night against a weak team. :eek2:

Well, Chuck was just on with AG on 850. Didn't really say much that hasn't been said here.
AG asked about Ronnie's (lack of) ice time (apparently he got NO PP time tonight?) and Chuck said "that's something for you to ask on Monday's Front Office Access". AG had the stat sheet, Chuck had not gotten his copy yet and said "that's all he got tonight...again?" with an almost incredulous tone.
AG did ask as his final question about "would a coaching change make a difference?". Chuck basically tip toed around that one (even though he said "I'm not trying to tip toe around that one"). Talked about how someone/everyone must be accountable and that JR presumably is evaluating things.
This is a strange aftermath -- it's been on this long and there have been 2 phone calls (none to Chuck). Perhaps AG enjoys hearing himself talk? Nah - couldn't be that! But I DID hear AG say "I'm not all that sophisticated about the details of hockey" -- that was in response to the highly technical comment from a caller about "playing a more open game". Sigh, I used to think Adam Gold was a Saint - but then again he used to share his airtime with that dude, Pat Mellon (was that his name?).

It's bad. We have people starting to smoke again, changing the channel to watch niche 80's bands, and cranking out the polls. As a person who quotes lines from "Airplane!" often, thanks to the glue sniffer with the great line.
That said, I wonder if Mo just opens the door to the locker room before the game and just says "I just want to let you know. We're all counting on you." And then he leaves.
I've not been a Mo must Go person either, but I'm changing stripes. At this point, interjection has to be made, and the players can't all be fired. To paraphrase the great John McKay, I'm all for their execution. But you can't shoot them all, and there might be an innocent one or two. So it has to be Mo. Even JR won't let himself get fired first.
I'll be amazed if he isn't fired tomorrow. If he isn't, nobody will be in the seats Sunday night, and TLT gets a hat trick. If he does, luck will have it that my name gets drawn for the tractor that night.

Unfortunately, I saw no positives.... The game was really quite AWFUL and it is cruel and unusual punishment for us fans to be subjected to this crap.

...and build on it!!!
I must say I'm loving the new John and Tripp "Booth Cam". Did you see tonight when Tripp was staring at the water bottle and John looked at the camera with a "God I hope this camera is catching this Boner right now" look...it was priceless!
Night all,

Sorry MO, we appreciate all that you have done for us, but TIME'S UP!

I'll tell you the truth. Somewhere during the 3rd period, I actually got absorbed into watching some 1975-era airplane disaster movie. It was one star-rated and totally hokey. But it was better than watching the unfortunate and greatly-to-be-pitied Mr. Storr being shelled. I did switch back to see the final act, but Charleton Heston in a yellow turtleneck really had my attention.

If it has not been obvious before, it most definitely is now.
Mo, has lost this team and they have become an embarrassment!!
I think he is a good guy, good for the community, and represents the organization well, but these things are not helping to win hockey games.
Jr and PK cannot sit back and let it go any further, injuries are not a problem, youth is not a problem, players are not the problem.
Confidence is lost and only a change at the top can start to rebuild it.
Please make a change, I am slipping into depression more, with every embarrassing loss.

I hate Toby Keith, but right now I'd rather him do a concert in my living room while rubbing his ass on my face than watch this effin' game.
Thanks for the laugh......I needed that.. :D
I'd rather have Toby Keith be our coach!

just got in.
did anything, ANYTHING at all good happen in the course of the game? was there ANYTHING positive? pretty please with sugar on top tell me there was...
Why sure. As i mentioned earlier in the thread, i turned off the game and started watching ADAM AND THE ANTS.
Uh, that's all i've got.
edit - No, i came up with another good thing. Mika Noronen had already had 2 shutouts in his career, so the Canes did not give him his first. HA! Take that, Mika!

Last night on TSN's Spostscentre, they opened the highlight package of the Sabres/Hurricanes game by saying "Can the Sabres pull off a much needed home win? Of course they can, the huurricanes are in town and EVERYONE beats the Hurricanes!"
The only thing I can add to that is this........ after watching the highlights, I think Jamie played Storrible.

I am a canic depressive. Still a fan of the team, but down in the dumps. I get super high and excited and rushing speech when they score first, then become severely depressed when they lose 7-1. I feel bad to have joined the mo must go chants. I feel bad that there won't be anymore lapel pins to sell for the autism society when and if he goes. I'll be there sunday in the hopes my kid can get at least one positive and shoot a puck at the net after the game.

Being a fan of this team is like being in an abusive relationship.
I love the team so much, and they keep beating the crap out of me. But I still stick with them because I love them and cling to the hope that it's just got to get better.

As much as I love this team, it is getting painful to listen to the games, much less read about them on sports pages. Seems every poll, writeup, says about how this team has talent, but it is not being used.
But no matter how painful, I still will have my somewhat untrustworthy internet radio to listen to the games.

Do you think John Deere has changed the guidelines and we get a tractor if the OTHER team scores a hat trick? Prolly not.
No, I think it will be if our players score a hat trick for the other team. Jamie did not look good, but he also wasn't expecting to have to defend against 8 at a time, since we score 2 of Buffalo's goals for them.
Nothing to say but that was just awful. I have no positives to add..

Too true. Yikes!
All I can say is... 11 unanswered goals over 6 periods...
We were going to go to tomorrow's game and decided that the $12 seats weren't worth our money. Call me a bandwagoner but I would rather not waste my money on this right now... the $31 + beer/food could be better spent on a nice dinner. And this is for two hockey fanatics.

And it's so true, too. This team HAS the guns to compete. But how can they compete when they're 1) not being used and 2) kept silent by a system that is not at all conducive to offense?

The TB game is at 7:30 tomorrow, right? For some reason I was thinking 5pm and the N&O says 5pm but NHL.com and CH.com show 7:30 and I wouls assume they were correct.

Yeah...the Ronnie magnet schedule and Weekes pocket schedule both say the TB game is at 7:30 tomorrow evening.

it is 7:30. tomorrow is the Women's Jimmy V tournament at the RBC. I think there are games at 12 and 2:30 and then they turn it into a hockey rink!

I wouldn't call you a bandwagoner. I have tickets and not sure I want to go. For me, its not so much wasting money but more not wanting to see these guys I love and respect struggle so hard for so little. I think the system and the coach has destroyed any semblance of confidence and his lack of ability to motivate and use players strengths in his "system" is painful to watch.

while I don't have too much hope, we'll be there. As always, come by and say hey to us in the lot.. unfortunately that's been the funnest part of any recent games we've attended.

I'm going. I haven't given up hope that they can turn it around either, but it won't happen with Mo. The Canes haven't played an impressive game. They've scored a lot (Atlanta & Rangers), they've had an entertaining contest or two (San Jose), but nothing has shown "we're a really good team that are gonna bowl some people over." The Rangers and Sharks aren't good teams, but the Caps are awful and even they smoke us. Grr.
All I ask is a new coach that says "go out there and play."

I may think that Mo has to go, but they know that however many thousands of people show up to watch today's game - have paid their hard earned money to be there. They better damn well try.

I certainly do not enjoy going to the arena and having my heart ripped out and spit on. I will keep doing it, though, to help ensure that I still have that choice (i.e. that there is still an NHL team here for people to support or not support as they see fit) because I am a hockey fanatic and I want to have NHL hockey within driving distance of my home.

I agree with both sides. I hate going to games when we're playing like this. I don't like wasting my money, and I don't like wasting my time.
but, I lived in SC for almost 5 years, and when you're not in a hockey area, life sucks. I couldn't afford center ice at the time, so aside from the ocassional espn game, the only hockey I saw was playoffs. I'll never go back to that (because of CI).... but I also don't want to go back to not having a local team. And I love NC too much to move. So yeah, we'll go.
already spent the money.. and at this point, I don't see anyone buying tickets. I will say 2 more things.
1. The only good thing about home games is hanging out in the lot, and comisserating with other pissed off friends.
2. I pray that we don't have to sit through a 5-1, 7-1, 5-0 beating today. I can't take it much longer.
