40th isn't depressing to Brodeur

New Jersey Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur made a strong statement Sunday about his candidacy for the Hart and Vezina Trophies when he blanked the New York Islanders, 6-0 Sunday. Brodeur took the NHL lead with his ninth shutout of the season and became the first goalie in NHL history to post four 40-win seasons, breaking a tie with Jacques Plante and Terry Sawchuk. It also was the 64th shutout of his career, two behind active leader Patrick Roy of the Colorado Avalanche. Brodeur ranks fifth among goalies with 20 or more appearances with a 2.03 goals-against average.

I'll add this:
"Consistency is something that when I started my career I wanted to do,'' said Brodeur, who earlier this year became the first goaltender to record eight consecutive 30-win seasons. "I wanted to be able to play a lot and be consistent every year. Winning so many games every year shows I was able to do that. I want to keep going and raise that bar for other goalies coming up.''

From the ESPN.com write-up.

Can we kidnap this guy? And maybe NJ's defense as well?

If he doesn't win the Vezina this year there should be a riot.

that's not as clear cut as you would think at first.

what about Turco? where would dallas be right now if he didn't have a career year? ;)

but I agree... Brodeur is a madman between the pipes. and damn, the whole NJ team is rolling right now.

Turco has had an amazing year, definitely. But Turco's stats for a year or two can't compare to what Marty has put up over the years. Brodeur's been overlooked in past years IMO (I'm right that he's never won one aren't I?). I think it's his turn.

yeah, but the Vezina isn't a career trophy.... it's who's played the best through this season. large difference.

brodeur is a hall of famer, there's no quesiton. whether or not turco is remains to be seen. I think he's just beginning to hit his stride. but, as to who was the best goalie this year... while there are several goalies that had great years... imo, turco has a very thin lead I think.

I'm not a huge fan of the Devils, but Brodeur is a monster in the net. I think we do need to do some kidnapping......

I really can't abide the Devils, but I do love to watch Marty Broduer play. He has an uncanny ability to stop pucks.

Brodeur is my favorite goalie. I can even tolerate the Devils, but he is amazing. How fabulous would it be to have a goalie of that caliber consistently over many years???
