...O-U-T spells "out". :D

Seriously, that time of the year is here again. And what better way to kick it off than with some great music?

"The First Noel" (http://www.computerhistory.org/exhibits/highlights//1403_inexceldeo.mp3) and "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" (http://www.computerhistory.org/exhibits/highlights//1403_godrestye.mp3)

Along with a really fun snow globe (http://ww10.e-tractions.com/snowglobe/globe.htm)...

So, anybody got anything else wacky and related to the season to share? :)

 Yes, isn't it? :D I can't decide if the snow globe is funnier shaken or not stirred. If you leave the snow globe alone for five minutes, some crazy stuff happens...my personal fave being the girl getting eaten up by the snowman that then explodes. :D

Hey Kap024--

We just headed home in the snow from Saturday. My folks and sis had about 4 inches, then coming down Pleasantville Mountain on 56 it was treacherous, but it wasn't too bad. I miss that.

Another question for you--I was watching WJAC waiting for Suzy Snowflake, Hardrock Cocoa and Joe, or the Chinese Frosty cartoons, but didn't see them. Have you seen them yet this year?

No!! Actually, I haven't seen any yet. They should start playing them pretty soon. Monday was December 1st... officially the month of Christmas now. They should be starting soon. I'll keep ya updated :)

FYI for those underprivledged (major sp problem there)--

these three (with one for peter cottontail at easter) were these cartoon shorts from the 50s (I believe). They are about the length of a commercial that a tv station in Johnstown, PA has sole rights over. People call in from all over the world wanting copies of them. No big deal if you never saw them, but many people (myself included) have fond memories of them growing up. Sometimes the website (wjactv.com) has them on, but they haven't put them on yet. Definitely something to check out!

That music was done by an IBM printer in 1970. If you had the printer print certain letters and numbers together, it could generate songs. Two college students went into a computer lab one night, and recorded the printer doing the songs I linked to plus three others...

http://www.computerhistory.org/exhibits/highlights/

One could argue that that was a precursor to techno and industrial. :D

Anyway, here's some more fun Christmas stuff...

PG-13 warning...lots of myths, facts, and stories about the season.

Of course, you all know about grandma getting run over by a reindeer...

Wooo-hoooo...Another of my Northern favorites is online!! For those of you from up North, you no doubt saw the Eat-N-Park Christmas tree commerical growing up. They have it to watch on their website:
http://eatnpark.com/whatsnew/Commercials/star-h.htm

This is the best!! They play this on the Jumbotron at Pens games too (they're a sponsor)

Awwww...now that's a cute ad. :) I know we don't and probably will never have an Eat-N-Park around here in the Triangle, but why can't we have good Christmas ads like that one? Easily one of the best ones I've seen...thanks for sharing RCF. :)

The following may not be as cute, but it's some danged funny stuff...

http://www.miserablemelodies.com/cgi-bin/cgiwrap/miserabl/list.cgi?holiday

Especially check out the Reggae version of "Twelve Days of Christmas", the Portsmouth Sinfonia selections, and the San Francisco 49ers (Yes, the NFL team) selections. :D

raleighcanesfan

That Eat-N-Park commercial is at least 15 years old too...I agree with you Stormbringer...at times, the places around here really don't give off a sense of community. Eat-N-Park (and Sheetz--another famous establishment) do so much for the community. Christmas fundraisers, etc. Eat-N-Park had a set of glasses for Lemieux showing 5 or 6 different milestones. We don't have that down here, short of Hardee's bobbleheads. I really thought they would follow that up with something this year. Oh well...

The reggae got me struttin!

Well then I apologize if we've ever crossed paths. Us Northern transplants gotta stick together!

To keep this on topic--

Anyone ever see the old Lazarus building's Christmas tree wrapped around it in Downtown PGH? It really wasn't a tree, but looked like one as they wrapped lights around the entire corner of the building. I think they still do it...I'll check in a few weeks.

Unfortunately, I've never seen that because I have yet to visit Steeltown. But, there is a tree I have fond memories of seeing when I was little. Outside of Raleigh and Wake Forest, on Falls of the Neuse Road, there was a HUGE Christmas tree with a big Santa Claus on top. Its location was/is across from Wakefield High and Middle Schools...I say "was/is" because despite cutting down the original tree, the people there still do a similar but smaller Christmas tree.

Anyway, while we're on the subject of Christmas trees, here are some articles by Mr. Barry on what one could put under those... ;)

My brother got me a slighty outdated set of Russian-style wooden dolls where one opens up to reveal another, then another, etc. The "outdated" part of are the players and their corresponding jersey numbers, captain insignias, etc.:

Wesley #2, w/ Captain insignia
Francis, #21 (no C or A)
Kapanen, #24
Coffey, #77
Kovalenko, #51

Does that sound like the 1999-2000 Roster?

Yeah, I've played it a bit, and it's soo great! Fun going over the jumps and causing havoc, and the missions are fun (and a few even in the beginning haven't been easy.).

P.S. I also got two of Dan Brown's novels. I've read Angels and Demons, and The Da Vinci Code, and I got Deception Point and Digital Fortress for Christmas. I highly recommend Brown's novels. They are extremely thought provoking (and very well researched... he has TONS of completely factual references to people, places, government, art, and architecture in his books.).

Well I've just gotten back from the land of no internet, ie my parents place...

Thanks to the mods for looking after the place in my absence. :)

I had a wonderful Christmas. Got to see some family I hadn't seen in a long time.

My cousin, who is like a brother to me (we grew up next door to each other and are the same age) was home until the 27th when he would report for duty and be sent to Iraq. He's an infantry soldier, so everyone in the family is all worried about him and all. That was the only sad part of Christmas.

On the good note, I finally got a PS2 of my own. Having lived with people who had one (or more) until recently, I found myself in withdrawal. ;)

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday and has a great New Year!

Good to see the Christmas spirit...

Elway, two others, visit troops in Iraq

NFL.com wire reports

CAMP LIBERTY, Iraq -- About 1,000 soldiers at this sprawling western Baghdad base took a break Dec. 14 from the war's day-to-day grind to be entertained by comedian Robin Williams, former NFL quarterback John Elway and sportscaster and model Leeann Tweeden.

The three stars landed in Baghdad along with Gen. Richard Myers, chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, in military helicopters for a visit to boost troop morale during the holiday season.

The VIPs were greeted with deafening cheers from soldiers representing units including the 1st Cavalry Division based in Fort Hood, Texas, the 256th Brigade of the Louisiana National Guard, and the 2nd Brigade of the 10th Mountain Division out of Fort Drum, N.Y.

"I know we in America wouldn't have the life we have if it wasn't for people like you," said Tweeden, who visited Baghdad last year with Williams for a pre-Christmas event organized by the United Service Organizations (USO).

Former Denver Broncos great Elway said he thought twice about making the Baghdad trip, considering the worsening security situation.

"But once my kids told me that it'd be a great idea, I knew it was the right thing," he said before showing off his trademark quarterback skills by tossing several balls into a crowd of clambering soldiers.

"I'm not funny, I'm not pretty, but I can sure throw a ball," he said.

Williams was gang-tackled into autographing dozens of photos of himself, posing for pictures and displaying his rapid-fire humor.

The USO is a nonprofit charity organization established before World War II to boost morale, provide welfare and deliver recreational services for American troops.

And thus lending further to my theory that some people may have realized that October and most of November is too danged early to start Christmas festivities.

What started the theory? Last month, there were not nearly as many Christmas ads as there already were in October of last year and the year before last. The only Christmas ad I saw was for Carnival Cruiselines. At least that's how it has been here in VA/WV...I don't know about Raleigh, outside of Sunny not doing their big music thang.

*smack* I supposed I've been so relieved at how there has been less Christmas music and ads than usual that I forgot about how the Wal-Mart, Kroger, and Lowe's here have started up the Christmas stuff at least two weeks before Halloween. Lowe's, believe it or not, is the worst...they haven't started the music in their store yet, but you can sure hear the Christmas decoration stuff jingling and jangling throughout...I feel sorry for the employees there.

Edit: Figures...we start talking about this, and I see the second Christmas ad of the season: One for Wal-Mart featuring Garth Brooks having a blast with Santa.

Some of my favorite not-so-traditional Christmas songs are:

"Christmastime" by Smashing Pumpkins
"Christmas in Hollis" by Run-DMC
"Santa Claus is Coming to Town" by Frank Sinatra and Cyndi Lauper
"Christmas Celebration" and "Christmas Song" by Weezer
"Father Christmas" by The Kinks
"Christmas at the Zoo" by Flaming Lips
"Merry Christmas (I Don't Want to Fight Tonight)" by Ramones
"R2-D2 We Wish You a Merry Christmas" from a Star Wars Christmas
"Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" by Darlene Love
"Lonely Christmas Eve" by Ben Folds (written from the POV of the Grinch, high quality)

I'm also a huge fan of "The Ventures Christmas Album", where each surf guitar Christmas song opens with a secular pop hit intro (ex. "Frosty the Snowman" uses the intro from "Tequila").

My goal with my playlist is simple...to try to have a bunch of different (I.E. you don't hear it that often) songs, with a few you do hear often thrown in for good measure.

I'll have to look into the Smashing Pumpkins, Weezer, Flaming Lips, and Ben Folds songs...they'd make interesting additions. :) Also can't believe I have yet to include the Ramones' song.

I just hate all the SPEND, SPEND, SPEND - the malls already decorated for Christmas when it isn't even Thanksgiving, yet - all the catalogs jamming up my mailbox at home -

I just hate the commercial aspect of it all, and feeling OBLIGATED to be all Ho, Ho, Ho, and everything..... And there's family members I feel obligated to give something to--but I have no idea-- so I end up with a gift card. And actually, my brother and I decided a couple years ago to not give anything to each other, since we were each just exchanging gift cards to the same places! What a relief!

If I could limit gifts to just my husband, and close friends, it wouldn't be so bad. It's just family that annoys me, 'cause I just don't know what they'd want, and frankly I'd rather spend the money on refurbishing my house.

I haven't even wanted to put up Christmas decorations in 4 or 5 years. Guess I'm just a Scrooge. ;)

Guyute
11-02-2005, 12:01 PM
maybe we should do a Scrooge party. you can come over and we'll NOT decorate. ;)

I agree with you on pretty much all of what you said though. Every couple of years I have an easy Christmas, where everyone in my family has something they've been wanting, and I get to get it for them. every other year though blows chunks... trying to find a really good gift is such a drain. not to mention I'm usually paying off Christmas into February... which is when Shell's bday And Valentine's day hits...

good lord, make it stop!!!!!!

All kidding aside, I understand where you two are coming from...buying for Christmas is going to be fun this year. Especially with my trying to land a new Canes jersey before January 28th. AND, I certainly did not need an e-mail from NHL.com about there being free shipping during this month...especially after recently discovering some prints in their Canes art section I would love to get as a belated birthday gift to myself.

I must be a Scrooge too. Sounds like I'm in good company!

My aunt doesn't want to exchange gifts this year, and my mom and I have also decided to not exchange either. Nobody knows what anybody else wants, so we also end up doing the dueling gift cards. I don't know what to tell people when they ask me what I want anyway - I really don't want anybody buying me clothes and while I always want books, I don't always know which ones until I get to the bookstore. And then add in the fact that if I can get them at the library, I don't want to buy them at all, and it makes for a mess for anyone trying to buy me something. My dad just gives out money (always the right size and never has to be returned :D ) - he hates shopping.

So I only have a few people to buy for this year and it is such a relief because I hate shopping too.

What about "Leroy" in Paper Moon? He did some damn fine wrasslin'-in-overalls in that picture.

Damn...I didn't know ol' Randy and his career went back that far. :eek2:

I will never forget when WRDU 106.1 used to play that AND a few other songs/comedy pieces all the time throughout December before and on Christmas. Speaking of 106.1 and Christmas comedy pieces, I'm wondering if someone here remembers the following and could help me with the name of who did it...

106.1 used to (and for all I know, might still) play a local parody of the Harry Simeone Chorale's version of "The Little Drummer Boy". The band doing consisted of at least four or five people...one person doing the "Drum! Drum! Drum!" bass voice, and another two or three being the "choir". There was a fourth/fifth person that did not make themselves known until about two thirds of the way through the "song", when he would start pounding away on his drums like a ten year old who had just been given a HUGE drumset for Christmas, complete with a whistle.

I just wish I knew the name of the group who did that...all I can remember is that it was the Arrogant (no, not the Worms of "Me Like Hockey" fame ;)) something, I think; they were a local act, and that parody was the only thing I ever heard by them.

I hope everyone has a great holiday!!

We'll be without outside contact (read: internet connection) tomorrow until Tuesday. Not sure how I'll make it. God, I wish the family would step into the Iron Age. Even have to watch a game Monday night without my usual LGC fix. It better be a good game or I might not make it!

Everyone be safe and have fun!!
