Horn draws penalty with cellphone antics

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Joe Horn really did phone it in Sunday night.

The New Orleans receiver couldn't wait to talk about his touchdown, so he pulled out a cell phone and made a call - from the end zone!

After catching the second of four touchdown passes against the New York Giants, Horn was handed a flip-phone by teammate Michael Lewis, who pulled it out from under the padding used to protect the goal post.

Horn was still wearing his helmet when he punched in numbers, put the phone to the earhole and began speaking into it for a few seconds.

``I had told my kids to be at home, watching the game, and I told my momma, `Mom, if I score the second one, I'm going to get my cell phone out,''' Horn said.

Lewis was not supposed to be part of the prank. He stepped in when Horn could not fine the phone in the padding. If Lewis is fined, Horn said he would pay it.

Horn then ran back to his bench and was confronted by coach Jim Haslett.

Horn drew the coach's ire earlier this season for a touchdown celebration. After scoring against Atlanta Oct. 19, Horn pretended to machine gun two teammates, who fell to the ground in the end zone.

``It was the same thing in Atlanta,'' Haslett said. ``He'll learn. He's only 32.''

The weird TD celebration rivalled that of San Francisco's Terrell Owens. Last year, the 49ers' receiver pulled out a pen from his sock after scoring a TD against Seattle, signed the ball and handed it to his financial consultant seated in a nearby suite.

Earlier Sunday, Cincinnati receiver Chad Johnson mugged for the cameras. After his 10-yard touchdown catch on the Bengals' first possession, he ran out of the end zone and retrieved a preprinted sign stored behind a snow drift.

Johnson, who has repeatedly been fined by the league for uniform violations and touchdown celebrations, held up the sign that read: ``Dear NFL: Please don't fine me again.''

Horn's antics resulted in a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on the ensuing kickoff of a game the Saints won 45-7. At the time, New Orleans led 17-7 in the second quarter.

The NFL had no immediate comment.

``You don't do stuff like that,'' Haslett said after the game. ``I know it was premeditated. I know it was national television. But you don't do it.

``I won't fine him,'' he said, grinning.

Horn, though, played the rest of the game and finished with nine catches for 119 yards.

In the third quarter, Horn capped a 60-yard drive with a seven-yard touchdown reception - his third of the game, tying the franchise record set last season by Deuce McAllister. This time, he took the football to quarterback Aaron Brooks, presented it to him and hugged him.

In the fourth quarter, Horn caught an 18-yard scoring pass in the same end zone where the phone call took place, and this time he did a short victory dance.

``His performance was awesome,'' Haslett said.

Meanwhile, fans seated behind New Orleans' bench waved cell phones and offered them to the team.

The Giants reaction varied.

``I have great respect for Joe Horn, but that's not original,'' New York defensive end Michael Strahan said. ``Terrell Owens already beat everybody to that stuff. That's bush league.''

Quarterback Jesse Palmer of Ottawa, who made his first NFL start, found it funny. But after the Giants' 45-7 loss, their sixth straight, wide receiver Amani Toomer said Horn's prank was not his concern.

``Him and his cell phone are the least of our worries,'' Toomer said.

Only 32? When will he learn...when he retires?

Did you guys actually see that play? OMG, that was absolutely freakin' ridiculous! I had no clue what he was doing at first...

Although he sure made my fantasy team happy... 4 TD receptions. :)

No, I didn't see the play.. must have been when I had the Rams game on and watched the official trip someone and singlehandledly stop a touchdown that would have won the Seahawks the game in the final minutes. *d'oh*

That was ridiculous as well. I went 12-3 for my Sunday picks, and would have been 13-2 if it werent for that doofus keeping the Seahawks from winning.

Probably heard already, but here's the story:

Saints' Horn to Pay $30G for Cell Call
NEW ORLEANS (AP) - New Orleans Saints receiver Joe Horn was fined $30,000 by the NFL on Tuesday for making a choreographed cell-phone call in the end zone to celebrate a touchdown.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello confirmed the amount of the fine. Horn's agent, Ralph Vitolo, said the player will appeal.

``Fining him is one thing, but to me that's very excessive. This is not a murder case,'' Vitolo said.

The Saints did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment.

Return specialist Michael Lewis was fined $5,000 for helping orchestrate the stunt, and Horn told Vitolo that he would pay that fine.

After catching the second of four touchdown passes in a 45-7 victory over the New York Giants on Sunday, Horn was handed a phone by Lewis, who pulled it out from under the padding used to protect the goal post. Horn was still wearing his helmet when he punched in numbers, put the phone to the earhole and spoke into it for a few seconds.

``Would I take it back? No, no. I knew exactly what I was doing,'' Horn said after the game.

The Saints were penalized 15 yards for unsportsmanlike conduct for the stunt.

Horn was fined for unsportsmanlike conduct for the second time this season and the seventh time since 2000, Aiello said.

Head coach Jim Haslett said the team would not punish Horn, but that he was disappointed in the receiver's ``selfish'' act.

After San Francisco's Terrell Owens pulled a pen out of his sock and autographed a football after scoring a touchdown in a game, NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue sent a memo to all teams warning that such stunts would be punished.

Also Tuesday, Cincinnati Bengals receiver Chad Johnson was fined $10,000 by the NFL for retrieving a sign from behind a snowdrift and holding it up after a 10-yard touchdown catch Sunday. Johnson's sign read: ``Dear NFL: Please don't fine me again.''

Carr, McKinney fined $5,000
By JOSEPH DUARTE
Copyright 2003 Houston Chronicle

The NFL gave Texans quarterback David Carr and center Steve McKinney belated Christmas presents Friday -- $5,000 fines for spoofing New Orleans receiver Joe Horn's cell-phone call in the end zone during Sunday's game against Tennessee at Reliant Stadium.

"It's not a big deal," Carr said. "(The league) basically said we shouldn't do it again."

After Carr's third-quarter touchdown pass to Corey Bradford, McKinney raced to the goal post and acted like he was searching the padding. There was no phone, and Carr waved his hand below his chin to signal to fans that there would be no repeat of Horn's antics.

McKinney said he and Carr came up with the idea in the huddle just before the TD.

In a letter from the league this week, the explanation for the fines was that the celebration was premeditated, Carr said. Both players plan to appeal.

Horn was fined $30,000 by the NFL for making an end-zone call Dec. 14 after teammate Michael Lewis handed him a phone that had been stashed under the goal post padding.

The NFL has been cracking down on prop-oriented celebrations, beginning last season when San Francisco receiver Terrell Owens took out a Sharpie pen and signed a ball after a touchdown. Two weeks ago, Cincinnati receiver Chad Johnson held up a handmade sign after a touchdown that read: "Dear NFL: Please don't fine me again." He was fined $10,000.
