The Hurricanes travel to Pittsburgh to take on the Penguins in a dual of bottom dwellers. Who will come out on top....errr....I mean bottom.. is anyone's guess! A win tonight will tie the Canes with Pittsburgh in pts. :spin:
What's new:
The Canes sent Watt back down. Probably won't be a big impact but still, the bodies are piling up and the bench is getting shorter. Ugh. Sean Hill will be playing his 600th game.
The Hurricanes currently lead the season series 2-1-0-0 with the last victory coming by way of a 4-0 shutout in Pittsburgh.
That's it. Here's the pre-game skate (http://www.carolinahurricanes.com/news/news.asp?articleid=1054) from ch.com. Discuss.

Looks like Irbe and Caron in goal. Weekes didn't practice yesterday so the hand must be bothering him a lot now.

Why? neither one (yes, I did say NEITHER one) has tried in the last few months.
Should be a barnburner as neither team's goalies showed up this year. Go Canes!

No offense dude, but somebody has obviously forgotten the three shutouts Weekes managed to post last month before he somehow injured his hand. IMO, the said injury is a huge reason why Weekes hasn't been great lately...then again, it also doesn't help that a potentially decent backup in DesRochers was taken away for the remainder of this season thanks to a broken arm, therefore making Weekes play more than he really should have played...

I've heard Weekes needs surgery, but why? I mean, what happened to his hand? Also, what's it going to be for him to come back and play? (Rehab and all) I would imagine it's even worse than Brind'Amour since he's a goalie? Thoughts?
Which is exactly why i keep saying Weekes needs to go ahead and get the surgery ASAP and to heck with his bonuses.
The Lock Monsters got ahold of Damian Rhodes on loan earlier this year; to be sure they could do likewise again. The season is way, way over. Just go ahead and bring Petruk and Boisclair or someone up, give them some early auditions, see if they can get Rhodes/Brathwaite(!)/Guy Smiley in Lowell, and finish out the season with Weekes already on his way to recovery. Cripes, call up Future Captain and let him stand in front of the net. Carolina and Lowell are done for this season. Start taking those steps to prepare for next season.

Weekes has done the same thing lately he's always done....posted a great little stretch (the shut-outs) followed by crap. If his problems lately seemed to be on the stick side (where the injured hand is) I'd feel better about it but his problem is he is not moving. He's looked slow and sluggish and out of position. He has no confidence in goal. He looks dis-interested....just like Irbe has at times. Some of those goals scored on him Monday night he didn't even move to try and stop....and not just the screened ones either. The D in front of him has been a let down lately but so has he, IMO. I realize I'm one of a minority of people who feel he ain't all this organization thinks he is and one of only a few who thinks that he isn't playing well lately but that's how I see it.
That being said I don't expect much better out of Irbe if he is indeed in net tonight.
I haven't said it in a while so here goes: #1 off-season priority should be to fix the goalie problem.
But as far as this season goes.....I'd just like the next few games NOT to be humiliating loses...and one more win would be awesome. At least the Pens are in about the same boat as us....should be a pretty even match-up I hope.

Well, perhaps we'll perform well given the history of playing against the Pens this season with Lumieux vs. playing them without Lumiex. They beat us at home without him and we've beaten them twice with him.
So................since he's playing with them tonight? A win? Who knows! I agree about the disinterested factor of goalies. Hopefully if Irbe is in goal tonight he will go out of his way to stop a puck. I really, really want to see him get one more win in a Canes uniform and see the players bumping heads with him one more time......
Go Canes!

No, you are not alone SHC. I never said Weekes was playing well LATELY...in my book, two-three weeks ago is definitely not lately. And to be quite frank, while I have loved it when Weekes has played well, I am not afraid to admit that he is not the greatest goalie. You have to wonder about someone who has been traded to over five teams, including the Canes in only five-six(?) years of playing in the NHL...here are his team affiliations:

I don't disagree with you. I think that he is at best a good backup, with stretches of brilliance, like you said.
His play on Mon didn't seem to be his hand at all... he was caught way out on one play, which seems to me to be a moving the feet problem, not a hand problem.
I am firmly in the camp of us picking up a good starter in the off-season.

yeah, i think weekes needs a day off, maybe for more reason than just his hand. he probably shouldn't have even started the last game. i'm with folgers though -- one more start (and WIN) for archie would be great.

Well, I was surprised that he started the Atlanta game LAST week because he had played the night before at home. He was about 5-10 minutes later to the ice for warmups, so I was just certain he wouldn't start. Since then, he's earned his 50 game bonus, but isn't he still 1 game short for the wins bonus? Not suggesting that's the reason for all the starts, but I've given up trying to figure out who'll be in the pipes at face off.
I hope everyone gets a chance (and takes advantage of it) to finish the season on a not-so-sucky note.

My husband always says you can tell what kind of night Weekes is going to have based on his first save. When he is ON, he is fantastic. When his brain seems to be somewhere else...then you better watch out. As SHC pointed out, most of the goals he has allowed recently were NOT stick side. The were glove side or the dreaded five-hole.

I haven't said it in a while so here goes: #1 off-season priority should be to fix the goalie problem.
First of all, I'd like to say that I'm not 100% certain that Weekes plays consistently well enough to be a successful, or winning number one goalie. But, having said that I think you're being a little over critical of him.
You are saying he isn't even trying and seems dis-interested? Did he seem interested when he made that double toe save off Saku Koivu? That was a marvelous save by the way, one you don't see often. I agree that Weekes has looked better at times this season than he has lately, but to imply that his injury hasn't affected the goals he has let in is unfair. Don't many people over-compensate for their injuries? For instance, since only his stick hand is hurt, are you saying it should have no affect what-so-ever on his glove hand or the rest of his actions as a goalie, other than just holding the stick? I've never been a goalie, but I know when I have an injury in tennis it affects my whole game, not just one specific action. Before you say it, I will say it myself. Bonus or no bonus, he shouldn't even be playing if he is hurt. This is just another indication how management has written off this season by allowing him to play, if this is his call, and I assume it is his call. I'm sure management isn't forcing him to play hurt although they may have asked him to, and maybe he agreed for multiple reasons other than just attempting to earn a bonus. In any event, it's a crock, he shouldn't even be playing.
Let's look at the goals allowed against Montreal that you blame him for. The 5 hole goal was a big no-no. We can all agree on that one. The one where he was out of position wasn't good either, but wasn't he moving to get himself out of position? The other 2 goals he had no chance against, IMO. Both were uncontested point blank shots goalies have to be lucky to stop. Either that or the shooter must shoot the puck directly into the goalie, like our shooters do. The previous game against Buffalo all goals were scored on power plays, two of them on 5 on 3's. You're going to put the blame on him for those as well? In the meantime, our defense (and offensive guys, that means Jeff O as well) repeatedly allow odd man rushes, or somehow allow their men to wander and shoot point blank on goal, uncontested. Where is the criticism of them? They look a bit dis-interested as well, especially Jeff O. This doesn't even get into the continual and habitual lack of scoring and offensive goal production, which can suck the life out of any goalie after a period of time.
While Weekes has yet to prove that he can be a consistent, winning number one goalie, I think this organization has many more pressing problems to solve than at goalie over the offseason. I don't know if you have noticed, but we are about to set a franchise record for the least amount of goals ever scored in a year. With this franchise, that's saying an awful lot and I don't think we can or should rely on either Weekes or Irbe or whomever is in goal, to score goals for us. To single out and blame Kevin Weekes during this horrid period and to imply that getting rid of him should be our number 1 priority in the offseason isn't fair or logical, IMO.

I'm sorry, but I can't get into every single aspect of this team that needs to be fixed every single time I post something. I did not address defense or offense because I was responding to a comment about goaltending. The D and O need a lot of work too. But, IMO, goaltending is the first problem that needs to be addressed.
I also did not blame Weekes for every single Montreal goal and I did not necessarily say that fixing the goalie problem involves getting rid of him....although in all honesty I would rather see us just start from scratch. He has a career losing record, has been with 5 teams in 7 years and has never proven himself to be anything other than injury-prone and spotty. Since it is painfully clear that we will never fire Mo which probably means that we will be running a primarily defensive system our goaltending must be outstanding in order for us to be successful. That, IMO, makes it the first thing we need to fix in the off-season.
It used to be that one could exist on this board without worrying about revealing who your favorite player is since people were nice enough not to use that against you. I see that's not true any more. I never mentioned Jeff O'Neill and I'm pretty willing to admit when he has not been playing particularly stellar lately. However, the fact remains that he is the leading scorer on this team and our record would certainly have been much worse without him this year. Laying much blame on him seems pretty misplaced to me. No one has had a stellar year...and no one is excused. Not Weekes, Irbe, O'Neill, Francis or Wally.
And finally, I'd like to say again that I was replying to a comment on goaltending above. I was not simply choosing to bring it up to lay the majority of blame on the goalie. Sheesh. Why don't you come off as defensive next time?

This really stinks....... I have to admit, I was pleasantly surprised when I saw listed on CH.com that the game tonight would be televised via Fox Sports Net after thinking the Montreal game would be the last Fox Sports Net telecast of the year.....but now I'm annoyed. Boooooo!
I'm glad at least it's being shown on digital cable though as SB says, unfortunately I don't have digital cable here at college....

For those that can't see, Carolina is losing 1-0 after the first. It has been a defensive battle. Irbe has been stellar. He stoped one breakaway on Lemieux and another near breakaway by Le Magnifique. The one goal was a fluke....a Pen to the weak side of the net centered the puck and, through tight defense, the puck went off of Sean Hill's skate an into the goal. We can't get a break.
Good game, though. A bit sloppy though mostly even...the Pens have been more offensive than us but we've had our moments including a Bayda near-goal on a Caron rebound.
We'll get 'em, I hope.

The goal was just an unlucky bounce off Hill's skate. The puck was being passed across the ice and it just glanced off. It wasn't really a shot on goal. Irbe has looked more like his old self (in a good way!)

Archie plays well. The defense looks so much better. And we lose in the last 10 seconds. bless them, even when things so well, they lose.
Good for Archie though. some very impressive saves.
I will say that if it turns out to be Mario's last game, he deserved to go out with a win.

Yes, but it is a very high probability for the last place team to get the first pick...they showed a graphic on TV....it was either a 60% chance or 40% chance, but I can't quite remember.
Still, 2nd pick is pretty good.

As Cher would utter, if I could turn back time, and choose a game to sum up this season...it would be a hard decision, but in the end, I would choose this one. You really could not get better than tonight...great defense, great opportunities, great goaltending...but still no win thanks to a stupid penalty and a bad break here and there. You know, with the way that third period went, I wonder if the Pens AND hockey gods read my website's introduction for this week (www.missfantastic.com/stormbringer/index2.htm) during the second intermission...  This was truly a game destined to be dubbed good, bad, and ugly...
The Good:
Gettin' Ziggy With It! - A beautiful shorthanded goal by Michael Zigomanis! Have I said that I love these rookies? If I have, then so be it because it cannot be said enough...
Happy Meal - And how about that goal by Craig MacDonald? I bet he would loved to see some Canes fans smile as much as his teammates when he did that, and Ziggy and Craig Adams assisted with it.
Another Brick In the Wall - I wish that brick could have been a win, but none-the-less, Archie played a stellar game. Those saves he made on Le Magnifique were awesome.
Tenacious D - Despite the scoreboard saying the Pens got one more goal than the Canes, the Canes were the better team thanks to not only Archie's overall good goaltending, but also overall great defense. The only thing truly marring this game was...
The Bad:
That Ol' Devil Called Luck - That is what has haunted your and my Carolina Hurricanes this season, folks. Seriously, this could have been just a tied game had it not been for that stupid and lucky (For the Pens, that is.) deflection goal off of Hilly's skate. Of course, there was one factor besides luck that didn't help, and that was...
The Ugly:
Child's Play - Bayda, I *really* and *genuinely* hate doing this to you, but welcome to my nightmare that is making my ugly section for the first time. If it had not been for that horrible, HORRIBLE high sticking double minor, this puppy could have gone into overtime. (sighs) Despite that, you had an ok game and such a fine interview too...
It is late in the season, but I feel just like Calvin in the Calvin and Hobbes comic strip where he was so desperate in waiting for a beanie to arrive, that he prayed to god asking him to let it come if he was good for the rest of his life. When Calvin got home, and saw that the beanie did not arrive, he looked up to the sky and screamed...
"WHAT'S IT GONNA TAKE?!"
That is me regarding my beloved Canes...what is it going to take? I am not giving up hope, especially after what I saw tonight. If you can continue the wonderful playing you did tonight Canes, you can go places and hopefully pull out at least one more win.
I'd say two wins...but we definitely know how finicky the hockey gods are and have been.

Yes, but it is a very high probability for the last place team to get the first pick...they showed a graphic on TV....it was either a 60% chance or 40% chance, but I can't quite remember.
Still, 2nd pick is pretty good.
2nd pick is definitely a good thing, especially in this draft. 1st is better ;) Definitely curious to see what JR would do. I imagine if we wind up with the 1st pick, we'll get that goalie.. otherwise I wouldn't be surprised to see JR trade the pick away... time will tell. (and not much at that).
Here's the official word:
Drafting Order
The NHL's annual Draft Drawing is a weighted lottery system to determine the order of selection for the first 14 picks of the 2002 Entry Draft.
The 14 teams that did not qualify for this season's Stanley Cup Playoffs, or clubs that acquired those clubs' 2002 first-round draft picks participate in the Drawing.
The Club selected in the drawing may not move up more than four positions in the draft order, thus only the four Clubs with the fewest regular-season points have the opportunity to receive the first overall selection. No Club can move down more than one position as a result of the Draft Drawing.

Before I start this let me just say I am not complaining. That was definitely a better game than we've seen in a while and several folks, mostly mentioned above, had great, great games. I will not agree about O not playing well on purpose...he had 7 SOG in Monday's game and 3 tonight but he also made two great passing plays to set other players *coughRonniecough* up right in front of the goal but they whiffed. He whiffed a time or two himself as well though. In the 1st period, anyway, I thought the top line looked great. I do still wish he'd plant that butt in front of the net on the PP....but I'm not convinced that isn't a coaching decision since no one is bothering with that anymore.
Now for the part that might sound like complaining:
If you want to see what is wrong with this team and what will still be wrong with this team once everyone is healthy if something doesn't change (ie coaching) then just watch that 3rd period. We're up by one goal, one goal!!! Not two, not three....one. And they dropped back and played too passively like we had it locked up. The Pens turned it on in the 3rd and we didn't bother to match it. IMO when the whole team lays down like that....that signals a coaching problem. But we all know Mo isn't going anywhere so we better all get used to it I suppose.

I was wondering too. (And so did my "11-year-old barometer" ;) ) Isn't it strange that the entire first line has gone south.
Guess Ronnie will have to get by w/o the "undisclosed pay reduction". Not expecting 5 points in 2 games from him.

I will say that if it turns out to be Mario's last game, he deserved to go out with a win.
Agreed. I can live with that. And the fans too - if I'm at the RBC for Ronnie's final game, I sure do want to see it be a W.
I know it had to sting though.

Kudos to the Pens fans tonight. They really came alive in that 3rd period and I believe willed their team to win. With the near constant pressure applied by them late in the 3rd, I wasn't surprised at all by the outcome. Archie did indeed look much like his old self tonight. Some brilliant stretches but a knack for allowing the late goal/goals. Hopefully he can build from the positives.
Overall it was an interesting and exciting game. Good try Canes !

That is a cool picture. I'll bet Ronnie and Mario have and always will be very good friends. That's kind of sweet. :)
Even though i'm crushed we lost, the only good thing i can say about us losing is that Mario gets a win in his possibly last game at home.

It appears Mario has decided not to play against the Caps. So that could have been his last game....period.
PITTSBURGH, April 3 (UPI) -- Conceding it's been a difficult season, All-Star center Mario Lemieux of Pittsburgh hinted Wednesday he may retire again over the summer.
After setting up a pair of goals, including the game-winner, in a 3-2 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes, Lemieux announced he will sit out Saturday's regular-season finale before determining his future.
"If this is my last game, it's been a great experience since I came back three years ago," Lemieux said. "I have no regrets on coming back."

the problem is we're not guaranteed the #1 pick just because we're last in the league. can't do worse than the #2 pick. we'll know on Monday when the lottery takes place.
Yes, but it is a very high probability for the last place team to get the first pick...they showed a graphic on TV....it was either a 60% chance or 40% chance, but I can't quite remember.
Still, 2nd pick is pretty good.
From today's paper:
In Monday's draft lottery, they now have a 48.2 percent chance at the first overall pick in what is perceived to be one of the deepest drafts in years. At worst, they'll pick second.
