The Canes return to the ice tonight to take on the Detroit Red Wings. Here's hoping the Canes start the new year off right. ;)
The Canes are 3-3 against Western Conference teams while the Wings are 6-5 against the East. The last meeting between these two teams was of course the now infamous Nov. 29th meeting last year. It was a bittersweet 6-4 victory as Kevin Weekes suffered a concussion and the team began their spiral downward.
The Wings are leading their division right now with 51 points. No shock there, the Wings are always among the league leaders. They have tons of firepower up front and a solid defense. The usual suspects are having great years, Hull, Shanahan, etc. The one surprise, if you can call it that, has been Pavel Datsyk. He has 20 goals and 24 assists so far this season. Pretty good for such a young player. He will need to be contained.
Most likely we will see Weekes in goal again tonight. Here's the pre-game skate (http://www.carolinahurricanes.com/news/news.asp?articleid=1161) from ch.com. Discuss. :)
Go Canes!!

I hate these guys......the Canes HAVE to win!! I won't accept anything else..we play them again in Detroit and I certainly don't want to lose to them twice in one regular season!! GO CANES..play like you capable of playing...pound the goalie, skate the puck in and play swarming defense....
and by the way, are we still planning on chanting "four more games"?? ;)
Edited to add: WRAL reported last night that the Wings' are the winningest team in hockey right now!! Time for them to fall!!

Why am I not going to this, the one game I circle as the "pay any price to get in" game? The game which pits the team I grew up rooting for against my current hometown boys? I got the "you're going to too many hockey games" speech last night.

Sorry, but there's no way we can score with these guys.

Tonight, whoever gets momentum first is going to win. If the Canes can score early, maybe we can steal a win. But we're going to have to score 3 goals to win. Detroit has 132 goals this year. It's time we did Weekes a favor, and not depend on him to have a shutout. No 3 goals, no win. Hopefully we can make this the turning point of our season, this game against Detroit. But instead of turning the team into a spiral downward, maybe this can be the game that gets them going upward. We are 4-3 under Laviolette, which really isn't that bad, but we need a point where we score a bunch of goals (like last year against Detroit). I hope the RBC Center is packed with 18,730 psycho fans.

This is a huge game for us. On paper, Detroit should destroy us. If the team that showed up for the Ducks games shows up tonight they will destroy us. I think this game will be an indicator for the rest of the season. If we win, I think we will be in the running for post-season play. If we lose, I'll go ahead and make reservations for that beach house in June. :eek2:

Come on, not even a pulled groin for Shanny? Nothing serious... :D
Tommy's right....momentum is the key in this game. We have to come out with our defense as stout as possible....limit the chances they get, and keep the puck in the neutral zone. If we allow the Wings to start to get any cycle going, we're screwed. Try to create breakaway chances and odd-man rushes, because it seems like that's the only way for our offense to create bonafide, consistant chances to score. I'm confident that the defense will step up to the plate and be strong....but I'm not confident that we'll get many past Legace.
I won't make a prediction because they never pan out, but if the team comes out ready to play, it'll be a good game.

Thank you for the ray of hope!!
I have a few pieces of advice:
1. CRASH THE FREAKIN' NET!!!!
2. Come to the game awake. Drink coffee if you must but awake is essential.
3. I don't care what you do, do whatever you have to, but keep the jerseys with the flying wheel OUT OF OUR CREASE when they have the PP.
4. To the coaches: I know the PP looks bad but I've watched this team a long time now and I can assure you that Kevyn and Craig Adams will NOT make it any better.
5. CRASH THE FREAKIN' NET!!!
6. Weekes, it's OK to just stay in the net. I really won't fault you if you decide to just not play that puck. :)
7. Try picking a corner on your shots.....I hear it works wonders!
8. If your slapper hasn't been on goal in 10 games (JEFF O'NEILL) it probably won't be now either. Try a wrister....look what it did for Hill!
9. Try not to always have a 3 second pause between when you receive the pass and when you get up the courage to shoot. This allows the goalie to get set. Shoot it and shoot it FAST!!
10. CRASH THE NET!!!
Alrighty, that's my "cure for all that ails you" list. If we do all that and we still don't win you can blame it all on me.

I'm curious about how the lines and ice time will look tonight. There are a few that were in the doghouse a tad after the bad penalties, but I guess we don't know if or how that will translate into this game. The lines were shuffled throughout the Ducks game, so I do wonder what they'll look like tonight.

Caveman - You need to make your other half fall in love with the game!! Guyute created a monster with me though, so be careful lol
I actually feel pretty good about this game. We do show up for the really tough teams much more than we do for other teams struggling like we are.. we almost always play to the ability of our opponent.
Dave Lewis said Cujo will be in net tonight, and while Detroit has a lot of injuries (G Dominik Hasek (groin), D Derian Hatcher (knee), F Darren McCarty (back), F Steve Thomas (knee), out), they are deep enough that it doesn't seem to matter if they have 10 guys out. Datsyk has been one of my greatest players in fantasy hockey, someone needs to contain him.
Hoping for a great win for the Canes!! (and no injuries to anyone)
I'll have to stop at Zaxby's on our way and get a bunch of wings for the lot :) We'll be there early I'm sure!

I was told earlier that it was within 500 of being sold out. Guess I'll have to check my sources more closely! I'm sure many will be wearing the winged wheel
I really dislike this team (although I won't wish injury on anyone), but the version of the Canes that didn't play the Ducks will need to be on the ice to avoid complete humilitation.
I hope the house is rocking and the Canes are ready from the drop of the puck. We have to have a successful home stand or we'll be betting on other teams again in the playoffs

Shell and I must have the same "distract me from work" habits because I did the similar thing earlier. I think I was able to pull up 8 seats together in the LL South - row XX or something. I was able to pull 4 in section 323 in a pretty decent row too.
Let's just have the Canes come out and shut those Wings fans up early. :)
I just noticed this "Parking Advisory" link on ch.com:
The 'Traffic Advisory System' was developed by the Parking Department at the RBC Center. The purpose of the system is to keep the public as well as traffic, fire, rescue and law enforcement offices informed of events that may impact the Raleigh community. We hope you find this information helpful and that it will enhance current communications.
'Traffic Advisory Number 2, Jan. 2, 2004'
RBC Center Parking Operation Department
Happy New Year Canes Fans! We look forward to your attendance at tonight's game versus the Detroit Red Wings. We expect a sold out event, therefore it may be necessary to adjust some of our ingress traffic patterns.
In order to avoid delays and the potential for accidents on Wade Avenue, the Raleigh Police Department may need to close the Edwards Mill ramp coming off Wade Avenue. If this happens, traffic will be directed to Blue Ridge Road. Traffic on Blue Ridge may be directed one of two ways. You may be directed to use West Chase Rd. or Trinity Rd. The primary entrance will be West Chase Rd. But, this may need to be altered to avoid delays that may back traffic up to Wade Avenue at Blue Ridge.
When you enter West Chase Rd. and after you pass the office building on your right, the road becomes three lanes. One is the exit lane and the middle and far right lanes are for ingress to the property. Please use the far right lane if you have VIP or Premier Parking Pass hang tags. If you have a General Parking Pass hang tag or need to pay for parking, please use the center lane.
If you are directed to Trinity Rd., you will be using Gate B just across from Youth Center Rd.
The staff and I appreciate your patronage. Our objective is to keep you informed of pattern changes so that you will have a positive game experience.
Now, are they talking about Edwards Mill exits going BOTH directions on Wade? Have they ever actually done this?

WTF?? I've been to several sold-out games, have ALWAYS used the ramp off Wade onto Edwards Mill and have NEVER had a problem? What the hell are they doing? Blue Ridge is the one that's always congested, isn't it? I've never had a problem with Edwards Mill. Didn't they just widen (or maybe even build!) that road specifically for the arena? there is no way they are going to close the Edwards Mill ramp.....That
street takes in three times the traffic Blue Ridge does. One lane goes
off of Blue Ridge to the arena. Three lanes from Edward Mills to the
arena.

Which way are you coming on Wade SHC? I know that when we come from N. Raleigh and are going South on Edwards Mill that that the exit ramp off Wade, coming from the Beltline gets really backed up (people have to wait to turn left onto Edwards Mill. I think they want to avoid traffic backing up onto Wade itself.
Hopefully I'll get out of here early enough to avoid whatever the heck they are talking about doing. I don't want to end up in the Carter Finley lots!

Please to be getting real.
This season will get worse before it gets better. What you are seeing are all of the flaws that were covered up by the last 8 years of smoke-and-mirrors being laid bare. The poison being purged from the body, so to speak. So if you can't be bothered to support the team just because they're losing (especially when they're losing a game that they showed up for), then I suggest that you bail out now because they'll lose a lot more while the old bad habits are being burned out of them.

Erik has been in a bit of a slump. Hopefully that just means he's due. Despite his slump though he is tied for 2nd in points and is in 5th with goals this season (as per CH.com). He's just hasn't been able to keep the puck on his stick when he's going toward the net. I've also seen him lose an edge more frequently lately. Always the cautious optimist, he'll come around (soon, please  )

Wow, so nice to see that the checks from Detroit made it into the referees' pockets tonight. That should have been goaltender freakin' interference on that last goal.
And so nice to see our announcers fellating the Wings every chance they get. Yeah, I love hearing them going on and on and on and ON about that bunch of cheating SOBs all night. Just makes me feel so good, seriously.
I think I'm going to the gas station to get a pack of smokes before I kill somebody. I haven't been this wound-up since the playoffs 2 seasons ago.

Someone has to be.
Erik's position on the team scoring list says less about the player and more about the team; i.e. the worst goal-scoring team in the league.
Wish LaLa hadn't scratched Boulerice.

Ok, so how shall I put this... tonight's performance was, er, not so good?
Maybe that sums it up really...
But, no! There WAS actually an upside: Eric Staal had 29min of TOI... that's good! (Well, not that it changed the world, or even the game, but it's good to see that Lavi REALLY believes in him - good for his' confidence!) :D
Ron Francis won a mighty 81% of his' face off's... that's good! :D
The canes kept on firing shots as usual - 30 of 'em! While only allowing for the red thongs to fire away 22! (It's a pity neither Weekes nor Storr seemed to be all that triggered up though...)
Radim was -3, hmmm... maybe we didn't trade for his' defensive abilities, but that's honestly quite an awful figure for a game in which his' team allowed four goals.
Now, what really concerned me was this: Ryan Bayda got only 2.48min TOI... Ok, I admit I'm a bit of a Bayda fan and maybe he's not as amazing an NHL player as I believe he is (or could and will be), but giving him about two minutes in the first period and then letting him sit... well, the way I see it he should either get assigned to Lowell or be allowed to play more than that! Keeping a young guy like him sitting on the bench for game in and game out might be harmful for his' confidence and in the long run no one will benefit from that! Bring up Brendl in his' stead... Why not? Who knows Brendl might be able to generate something fresh and new, not that I personally believe he is a better player than Bayda but at least it's worth a shot!
Oh... there were actually two other things that bugged me (apart from us losing, but that dodn't bug me - it BROKE me)! First, PP: 0/7... comments not needed, I guess. And Jaroslav Svoboda! Get rid off him asap! If we could get a 28th round pick from the Chiefs in the ECHL for him, I'd say it was worth it! He seems to be a really nice and humble person, but he ain't an NHL player. He just ain't!
Now I'll just try my hardest to never think about tonight's game... ever again!
cheers, n. :smoke:

Things that make me tired:
1. Brind'Amour and O'Neill being unable to put a puck in a net no matter how empty that net is.
2. The Carolina Hurricanes' Power Play
3. Erik Cole's inability to finish a play because he can't stay up on his freakin skates.
4. Red Wing fans who move around non-stop during play. As a NASCAR lovin', hockey ignorant resident of NC, I shouldn't have to tell someone who is a fan of the mighty Red Wings from Hockeytown about hockey etiquette
5. The Carolina Hurricanes' Power Play
Goalie thoughts:
The 1st goal was WEAK.
The 2nd goal, Weekes couldn't see anything but Red Wing's butts because his teammates forgot the boys in white should be moved out of the crease.
I thought Storr played very well. He got hung out to dry on goal 3 and it's really tough to defend a net while being held down in a Ric Flair WOO WOO wrestling hold by Draper.
I don't usually complain about the officials because I think bad calls and non-calls even out, but tonight was too horrendous even for me. I truly believe they took a goal from us, gave a goal to them and that made the 6 on 3 PP at the end a moot point when it could have tied up the game. They didn't score, but if the goal would have tied the game, who knows what the outcome would have been?
I love Kevyn Adams.
Hill is flourishing under PL (a general statement although he had some excellent play tonight too)
And with apologies to Lady J (and I hope you are feeling better) Shanahan is a total ass.

I really can't believe that Lavi didn't play Boulerice. On the upside, we'll get Nicky on Sunday thanks to Boogie's match penalty.
The team didn't play awful, but they certainly weren't great. Another pair of dingers tonight, and Markov hit just on the outside of the net. Storr looked pretty good, too. Kudos to K. Adams for his usual hustle, and for making Cujo look foolish.
Three terrible officiating stars of the night:
1. Shanahan closing his hand on the puck was so blatant I can't believe it. He was out in the middle of the crease, and the ref would've seen it if he was in the right place. Staal was in the right place and saw it, and I honestly can't believe a penalty shot was not called.
These two I'm not totally sure about, but I'll put them anyway:
2. Is it just me, or was Jamie tackled before the 4th goal? Last time I checked, tackling the goalie was a penalty.
3. When Cujo was sprawled inside the net, I could swear the puck crossed the plane before it came off the pegs. Even if it didn't go in, not reviewing it is ridiculous from what I saw.
If I was Andy van Hellemond, I'd be having a few words with those guys.

1) John and Tripp said that their was an issue over whether he actually closed his hand on it, or just pushed it under Cujo.
2) The explanation was that the contact was 'incidental' (he was originally pushed into Storr), and it was outside the crease, where incidental contact is legal.
3) Yeah they should have reviewed it, but it didn't look like it went in.

I won't argue with you about Shanahan covering up the puck, because it was pretty obvious he did. Even the Detroit announcers believed it should have been a penalty shot.
As for Storr getting tackled by Draper, I don't think it was on purpose. He was pushed down and held by Hill.
As for your third point, I didn't see that so I can't comment.
I do agree that the officiating was horrible. There were things that should have been called against both teams at different times that weren't.

TC's wrap up is very good - saved me some typing.
I thought Ronnie played well (and smart tonight). I was really ticked that he chased down a puck, saved an icing call, and managed to send the puck back in front of the net, and 4 Canes were just gliding down in that general direction and the puck sails away. It seemed to me that there that players off the puck weren't skating/anticipating, they were just waiting.
Chuck said on aftermath that he wasn't going to name names, but that he thought there were a few players not pulling their weight. Wonder who he had in mind.
Add Chelios to the ass department. As he left the ice, fans were taunting the Wings (we were right near their tunnel) something I'm sure he's accustomed to, but he took the time to point and then feign insult by covering his mouth and then laughing at the person (whoever it was). Seems like a guy with his tenure in the league could just leave the ice - particularly after a win.
And I had the most obnoxious Wings pair next to me. I must admit that they had to be obnoxious people in their everyday lives as well - and just happened to be Wings fans - so I don't blame the Red Wings, lol. They were obviously on a first date or something because they talked about "stuff' the ENTIRE FREAKIN' GAME. They never ever stopped talking. They criticized everything from the "cheap ripoff from the Matrix" to hating "Rock You Like a Hurricane" to commenting on every hit the Canes made ("it's not like it broke the glass") and every good thing that us poor Canes fans cheered for "so what, they won't score", "who cares, we're still winning", on and on and on. I did get a good laugh when the chick cheered for Chelios and he wasn't even on the ice. Alas, after my couple of games where I chided people around me, my kids immediately looked at me and said "Mom, please don't say anything". LOL.
Oh, and Bob Boughner tries, but he's no Jesse.

There is a lot of new blood on this team and some young guys that played under Mo for just 1 - 3 seasons. I must admit that I can't figure out if I'm supposed to be patient as we rebuild under a new coach (which is fine with me) or want some sort of turnaround (which seems to be PL's goal for THIS season).
And I question that they showed up for this whole game. The first period was pretty pukey - 4 shots and no real chances. And yeah, I know being down 3 goals sucks and all, but you had a 3 man advantage and can't get a goal in the net? At one point one of the 3 Wings even lost his stick during that 6 on 3.
Yeah, they didn't roll over and die, but they didn't play a whole game -- again.

Gosh, where do you start on this stinkeroo? I'll try...
First, I'll say that it's always an education to take my 9-year-old to a game with either Flyers, Devils, Leafs or Wings fans in attendance. It reinforces to the kid how not to act when you visit another team's arena when wearing a Canes jersey. Sure - most fans of those teams were fine. But there were several drunk and obnoxious ones around me in section 107 that I could have struck a match and something would have exploded. I still don't get these people disguised as ushers in the RBC Center, and I'm beginning to think they are encouraging public drunkenness just because the Canes can make a few bucks on beer.
That said - on with my game observations. (quick time out for another quick wretch when thinking about it)
The Staal double shifts were interesting. He appeared pretty tired toward the end of the game, but kudos to Lav for this strategy. I'd rather see more Staal (even a fatigued one) and less of the current iteration of Bayda. It makes more sense to put your best potential offensive spark onthe ice more often when the team is mired in an offensive slump like this.
Weekes didn't look right from the get go tonight, and I was glad to see him pulled. I haven't heard if he was sick or anything, but he practiced very little and fell down in the crease in the first 30 seconds of the game. That first goal was quite weak. Something wasn't right and I'd love to hear if there was something to it. Hopefully just the stars aligned wrong or something. Storr played quite well, IMO.
Cole is getting very irritating to watch, and I love the guy. I don't see where a kamikaze on skates buys you much....
Shanny still sucks. I saw a couple in the stands wearing Shanny and Verbeek Wings jerseys. Ouch.
Agree wholeheartedly on an earlier comment about Hill flourishing under Lav. I hope this continues.
The refs were atrocious tonight. Hopefully some sort of action will go against them, because they were quite poor. It didn't matter, because the better team clearly won, but the game flow was interrupted by their weakness tonight.
How can you not score 6-on-3? Note to aliens: please return Brindy. We want him back.
We continue to be tested as true fans. I looked forward to this game. Yecch.
'nuff said.

I understand that Lav wants to find a scorer and Jesse isn't considered one(altho IMHO he's made great strides to correct that), but if Bayda is only gonna be on the ice a few minutes why not play Jesse instead? He parks himself IN FRONT OF THE NET, is hard to knock around and is always great when tossing the gloves down is called for. I just don't get it...can someone please inlighten me as to why he's still scratched?

This game was certainly depressing, but the results were more expected than the Ducks game. We really needed to win those 2 points. Tonight would have been nice to come away with a tie against all the Wings' talent. That's what I see as the 'Canes biggest problem. God bless 'em, I love 'em and want to see better results... but we don't seem to have the day in and day out talent enough to compete with most teams, never mind Detroit. The team's confidence has to be in shatters right now. They couldn't score a goal during a minute of 6 on 3. :eek2: That really sucked.
I'm holding out hope that, in time, Coach Lav will get the boys playing the style of hockey he's looking for (as well as the rest of us!). Should the playoffs become more and more improbable, Coach should use the rest of the season as extended training camp to learn his system and let's hope we win the lottery for the draft pick this time... in our own house!

I'm trying to separate myself from the obnoxious Wings fans and decide if the game was really all that bad or was the loss just heightened because it felt like I was watching an away game in my own arena.....
When Detroit got their 4th goal, this Wing fan right in front of me was waving his left arm up in the air holding an almost full cup of beer. I lunged forward intending to grab it and dump it on him, but husband grabbed me by the wrist in the nick of time. .... he's a little smarter than me... probably realized that he'd be the one to get an attempted ass kicking by the Wing fan/dufus.
I'm just really mad.... really, really mad.... I'm a season ticket holder and resent that the arena was overun by so many fans for the visiting team that my enjoyment of my team was squashed and belittled by a bunch of insensitive jerks .... I really was wiping tears off my face driving away from the arena tonight.... very frustrating......
I'm really looking forward to the road trip a bunch of us are taking to Atlanta. I intend to have some fun, but not at the expense of any of Atlanta's fans sitting around me. I hope I never make an opposing fan feel as bad as I feel right now......

1) John and Tripp said that their was an issue over whether he actually closed his hand on it, or just pushed it under Cujo.
Unless I'm just wrong on the rule (and someone let me know if I am) that is irrelevant. It is illegal for a defender to glove the puck while it is in the crease. Doesn't matter if he closed his hand on it or not. He's not allowed to touch it. Should have been a penalty shot.
I HATE the Wings but in all honesty, do you know why? Their fans (well, and Chelios and Shanahan). The single most obnoxious group of people to ever set foot in our arena are the Wings fans. Disgusting. Present Wing fan company excluded as I think we've got some of the best Wings fans on the planet on this board. Also exclude the guy who sat beside me at the Wings game last year. But when you get a bunch of them drunk and all in groups in our arena it's horrible.
Jaro and Joe both played very, very well tonight. Kevyn Adams can kill a penalty and God love him for finishing that one! I thought Storr did alright. Just about everyone else stunk. That's all I got.

Yeah - I have a great money saving idea next year. I wanna be the usher guarding the 106/107 aisle. That way I can have my same seat but be militant at the aisle while watching the game, and not pay money to see unruly fans treat others like the fans of a lost tribe.
I have the following 10 excellent qualifications:
1) My butt is big enough to block the aisle
2) I am not afraid to use a stop sign as a true detractor
3) I am not afraid to say "I'm sorry Mr. and Ms. Unruly Drunk, but the puck is in play and you will be staying behind me."
4) I can be nice but firm
5) I can figure out where the unruly people sit
6) I'll actually listen when somene who purchased a ticket complains of not having an enjoyable experience, being verbally insulted by another paying customer, or having beer spilled on their kids.
7) I'll know their info is in the ticket database, and I'll call their mom.
8) I'll make sure the unruly ones get on Kiss Cam
9) My butt is still big enough to block the aisle
10) I'll send Stormy into the crowd to play with the kid nearest the unruly ones, blocking their view. :-)
In all seriousness, though - I know there are a few ushers who read this, and I'm not singling anyone out in particular and not trying to be disrespectful. There may be a perfectly good reason why these people use the stop signs like a matador would. Perhaps they are just told to be helpful, or to not get involved in conflict. But geez...call security when people are complaining of unruly fans instead of just saying "I'm sorry, but there's nothing I can do." I sit literally right by the usher - in the first seat at the top of the aisle. I talk to them. I know they are nice people. (When they are there, which is not the case every game.) So there's something I'm missing. But whatever it is, it is getting frustrating. And it's five times worse when several thousand of the other team's fans buy the tickets and bring that sort of behavior into your section.
Rant off.

while I haven't quite gotten to a point where I can rationally talk about tonight, I will say I was browsing the letsgowings board and got a kick out of this (posted before game time obviously)
Hurricanes 14, Red Wings 2
The Canes manage 72 shots against a Red Wings squad that looks flat and listless on the ice. The Wings' 2 goals come on empty netters, scored in the final 5 minutes of the 3rd period when goalie Kevin Weekes abandons the net to sit on the bench. "It wasn't necessary for me to be in there at that point, so I just sat down and rested up for the next game," Weekes explained.
The most newsworthy incident related to the extremely one sided contest was an unexpected appearance by recently fired Carolina head coach Paul Maurice. Maurice managed to sneak into the FSN broadcast booth and took Ken Daniels and Larry Murphy by surprise when he appeared next to them during a pregame segment. Maurice demanded that the camera be turned on him so he could deliver a message. "Hey, Larionov. Remember that backbreaking multiple overtime goal you scored in game 3 of the Cup Finals? Well, I sure remember it. And if not for that goal, we maybe win a Cup and I still have a job. Well, guess what? I'm gunning for you tonight, motherf**ker! Keep your head up on the ice, *****!" Maurice was removed by security and broke down in tears when informed that Larionov now plays for New Jersey.
Coach Dave Lewis defended his team's poor effort. "Look, in the NHL, the schedule is grueling and the travel is murder. We can't give 100% every night or we'd never be able to finish all 82 games." Ron Francis said the Wings' complete lack of effort threw the Canes for a loop. "When we first got out on the ice and I saw the guy who was covering me just standing around, I thought they must have traded to get Fedorov back or something."

Hav enot read through this thread yet, but I recorded the game, and just skimmed over all of the goals and Shanahan's Cover Up in the crease. At the RBC Center there were plenty of replays that they showed on the jumbotron. On TV they did not really make a big deal abot it. IMO it definately should have been a penalty shot.
I wish that one of the Canes would have "inadvertenely" put their synergy through his teeth while "trying to free the puck from under him".

Weekes had no chance on the second goal...you try stopping a puck with fourteen pairs of hockey pants in your face. As for him being shaky, it has nothing to do with the goal against Anaheim. The Stillman blueline goal was way worse, and didn't seem to affect him. Some nights he's just shaky. Usually, with Weekes, you can tell from the first 3-4 saves whether he's going to be on his game or not. Some nights, you just get the feeling that not much is going to get by.

So John and Tripp didn't really make a deal out of the Shanny covering the puck thing? That's surprising.
Another thing I noticed from this game about Staal is that he got a little fire in his belly. He didn't take no crap from those Wings that were tying him up and bouncing him around. And after that Shanny puck thing he was yelling like a madman at the refs. In fact, I was a little disappointed that Brindy just skated away after an initial complaint. Staal took his cue from Brindy and skated away too, but he was pissed and let them know about it. Looked like he got into a few verbal confrontations here and there (at the end too). The kid is really amazing. I just hope his frame holds up under this ice time.
Actually, I hope two lines can start scoring and he can play on 1 line a night.
As far as Jesse not playing, Chuck seemed to think (though he didn't say why he thought so) that he'd play on Sunday. I need to ask my Isles friend, but I'm pretty sure they said that PL doesn't use a true enforcer role. I think he said that one of the d-men (Cairns?) was their tough guy. I hope Jesse can come back and impress PL again.

You're right. John and Tripp were talking about Staal's attitude on the ice. This kid firmly believes that he can outplay anyone. Who cares if they won a Cup last year? This is now. It's really refreshing to see a rookie who doesn't have a chip on his shoulder, just solid confidence in his skills. It's awesome.
But honestly, I am STILL griping about the power play. During one of the seven times when we had more men on the ice for two minutes, you'd think we'd manage to score. The Red Wings outplayed us on our own power plays! We have given up a scary amount of shorthanded goals. It's gotta be like 6 or 7 so far this year. Although that was Detroit's 11th shortie of the year.
And SHC, you're right. It doesn't matter whether or not he closes his hand on the puck in the crease.
Rule 53(c) No defending player, except the goalkeeper, will be permitted to fall on the puck, hold the puck or gather the puck into the body or hands when the puck is within the goal crease.
For infringement of this rule, play shall immediately be stopped and a penalty shot shall be ordered against the offending team, but no other penalty shall be given.

I agree. The Wings' fans are hands down the worst (with above exceptions!). The ones in my section were not so obnoxious as they were in constant motion during play and there were comments I heard on the way out that made my blood boil. I know there were a ton of them in 114 so that may have been a bad experience for Canes' fans over there.
On the way out this lovely boy said to his lovely girlfriend about the SCF patch on my jersey "she's wearing the SC patch from when the Wings beat these damn Canes". I did feel the need to tell him I wasn't deaf and that he was apparently finding it hard to be a gracious winner. His girlfriend was mortified, not sure at me or at him. I will say that he smiled and said sorry so I'll give points to him for that. He probably only did that because I was old enough to be his mother, but still.......... ;)

Well, I feel better about one thing. After watching the game again....we played a lot better than I thought we did in the arena last night! Detroit really is just the better team and, honestly, I'm thinking we actually held our own fairly well last night. But, I still think we can be better than that.
Someone called into the Aftermath last night with what I thought was a really good point. Unfortunately Chuck completely misunderstood him so it wasn't really addressed. What he said was that there were not 5 busloads of people down from Detroit that brought that attendance up to 17,000. These were Triangle residents. He referenced JR's recent article in THN about American fans and said last night is a perfect example. If there are another 6-7,000 Detroit fans in the Tirangle area who can show up for the Detroit game then shouldn't they be hockey fans? Then shouldn't they maybe come see the local NHL team just to see hockey? Or maybe they aren't, in fact, hockey fans but bandwagon fans of a winner? I guess that's it. Either way, hockey fans who don't bother to come watch the hockey or just bandwagon fans, it's pathetic, IMO.

I'm glad you brought that up SHC. I thought the guy was making a good point. Sure there may have been a chunk of die hard Wings fans that drove from other areas (Charlotte for example), but yeah - there have got to be a bunch of them that are right here. The two nimrods next to me didn't seem to know a lot about the Canes players which seemed really odd to me. Maybe they ARE just pile on Wings fans that dust off the old jersey's once a year and don't watch until the playoffs? Strange.

Majority of them are bandwagoners. They don't give a crap about hockey, but they have heard of Detroit, and they know of Detroit's reputation. So for the evening they jump on the bandwagon and act like complete losers. Granted, there are probably real fans that may live in the area that moved or whatever. I know on Lets Go Wings people were complaining about this b/c it is pathetic.

I do agree that we let them get away with a lot more than we should, but I also don't want to see fights or hear screaming matches in the concourse so I'll have to get over it, I guess.

Totally agree here. There were plenty of respectful Wings fans who acted like I would if I wore my Canes jersey into Joe Louis. It's always the few who screw it up for the many. I have worked at a few places where lots of the employees are transplants here, and many of them are from Michigan. So I expect them to be there on their one chance of the year to see the Wings because they they live here. I know many others in that same ilk who are Canes mini-pack holders or fans who want to catch 4-5 games a year and who do hope the Canes win if they aren't playing their Wings. Those people also know better than to laugh at us and our team...

From the ch.com article on tomorrow's game:
Frustration again overwhelmed Canes RW Jeff O'Neill, when he broke a stick after failing to score on a breakaway drill in Saturday's practice. ...
Don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing.
In the audio report, PL won't comment on who is starting in goal. The comments after practice are worth listening too. I like getting more of a feel for PL himself. (Funny you can here someone drop an F bomb in the background, lol).
Also from ch.com:
Carolina D Bob Boughner will not be suspended as a result of a stick-swinging incident Friday with Detroit LW Brendan Shanahan, but was fined an undisclosed amount
So I guess we see the same 6 dmen, presumably.

Just a few comments about last nights game...
First time in a long time I went home with my free hat. Saddens me that I didn't get to throw it on the ice in celebration. Thank God Draper didn't score an empty netter so the wings fans could throw it on the ice.
It would be nice to have a team on ice that could score and maintain the hard hitting pressure after the first ten minutes of the game. If that was the case we all wouldn't be complaining about loudmouth red wings fans because then our team would have muted them.
I need clarification on the match penalties to shanny and boogie. Kaiton said after the game that the announcement was in error, but some websites say there were match penalties. Can someone clarify?
After the first period I already shut out the game from my head, just watched the action. Give it to the Adams boys to bring us back into the game, only to see them sit the bench in favor of non scoring, non exciting players. In the second and third periods I was already looking forward to the Phoenix game to see if Hedican Kicks the doodoo out of tanabe on the boards.

A bigbutt "sorry" to all those who were at the RBC last night. I watched from home and alternated between intense furiousity and manic despair, both heightened by the feeling of being on the precipice of crying. I can't imagine feeling that way in MY building surrounded by rude redwing fans. Just seeing the canes jerseys on the ice with the wings jerseys in the first few moments of the game made me all irritatingly emotional, because the memories from the SCF just flooded back, and the team has fallen so hard since then. I actually deeply believe that this team can get back to their old soul, but damn, its hard to watch them while they are travelling through the valley to get there. And i really fear that if I feel that way, then the casual fan tuned out long ago...Oh, say, LAST YEAR maybe? I'm hanging on to hope right now, not that we make it to the playoffs, but that we make it, period. Anybody out there have any reassuring inside knowledge for me? Feel free to call me stupid and tell me "of course they aren't going anywhere" even if you have no inside info. It'll make me feel better.

I think there should be some new rules enforced if anyone enters the arena with a jersey other than a Canes jersey. For instance, if I was at the door last night holding the hats I would have looked at the person entering: "whooa there buddy, Detroit fan - get in the "back of the bus" - you don't get a hat unless we have extras!" I believe there were true Canes fans that didn't get hats because the WING DINGS DEPLETED OUR SUPPLY !!!!! What's wrong with that picture ? !!!
We were near Section 114, enough said on that  There was a nice couple behind us truly enjoying the game and I think actually sympathizing with us but there was a couple two rows in front where I swear, if the kids weren't with us, they would have had their jerseys pulled over their heads.
Game Thoughts:
We started off the first period pretty aggressively with the physical stuff and than it disappeared. If we can't get our PP up to speed, we can forget about having a chance. Since we can't make a lot of goals we have to rely on the chances during the PP and if we can't do a thing with a 6 on 3, fellas we might as well resign ourselves to a learning season and hope next season will bring us the team we have been hoping for. Tommy I'm with you "Why is McCarthy still here?" And why isn't Wallin playing? What the heck is up with that?

On our way in I was thinking that this wasn't going to be so bad because I saw lots of Detroit fans saying "No thanks" (without laughing) to the hats. I was thinking that the obnoxkious ones stayed home. What I forgot was that it's the obnoxious ones that stick out like sore thumbs and those classy ones turning down the hats get forgotten about amidst the sea of loud jerks. :-\

BTW, A couple nights ago, Forslund got the call of the week for his call on Kevyn's shorthanded goal. It was pretty neat.
