The unthinkable has happened. My PS2 is Broken!

When I put in a game all it says is Disk Read Error. This is the second time that this has happened. The first time I bought a new one and put the old one in the new box and took it back.

I am not going to try my luck again though. I called Sony and they said that they would fix it free of charge. I have to pay about $20.00 shipping and be without for about 1 month. I am not going to make it. Going to have to break out the old school Dreamcast for a while.

Has anyone else had Disc Read Errors and if so, how did you fix it?
Soem people have said a blast of compressed air will get it.

Yes, I got the same exact problem about a year ago. It started off not reading any dvd movies, then moved on to all games. I kept getting the same disc read error message. It was very frustrating. I did a bit of research on the internet and found that MANY of the PS2's sold on launch day (like mine) were having the same exact problem with tons of them being sold on ebay under the ebay search prompt "BROKEN PS2" and the description of "gives disc read error".

Some people online gave some tips of what to say to the Sony service rep and I told him about how I had bought it on launch day, etc. He said he would charge 80 dollars for the repair but I was able to talk him down to (after asking his supervisor) a mere 10 dollar fee that included shipping. Before sending it off though, I tried everything. I took the whole thing apart, cleaned the laser, blew out all the dust, etc. I sent it to Sony and it was mailed back to me relatively quickly with a new drive installed. It has worked perfecty ever sense.

If you can get by with the Dreamcast for a bit (which I love) I think you should go for sending it off to Sony and trying to get a reduced price if they will let you do that. When did you buy the PS2?

After I returned it though, I recall my roommate mentioning to me that he had read a way online about how to fix the disc read error involving tightening the lens. I can ask him about how to do this when he gets back and let you know.

The repair is going to be free. I just have to pay to ship it to them. I am guessing $20.00 with insurance and all.

Guyute got one on release day and it does the same thing. He's taken it apart as well. For the meantime, turning it on it's side usually works.

yes, this is a BIG problem on the first (and second I believe) versions of the PS2, where the laser they used is sub-par. Imagine that, cheap parts from sony

I run a dvd cleaner through mine about once a week now. when it gets bad, I take it apart and manually clean the inside of the laser assembly.

putting in a new laser is an option. it won't be as cheap as sony's option, but, your down time will be considerably less (which is more important than the money in my case. lol). I know a lot of people that have ordered parts from this guy: http://www.richspsxparts.com/psx2.html

it's $60, and free shipping. might not be worth it to you, but figured I'd throw it out there.

Mine is Very bad on blue-label (CD) games, but DVD's for the most part usually work. But when EQOA doesn't want to load, we have PROBLEMS. lol. last time I actually ran up to walmart to buy a new one, but they were out of stock. since then I haven't had problems as much (knock on wood). Clean it OFTEN is all I can say. those things are like vacuums as far as pulling in dust. we have animals and we smoke, so mine takes a beating.
